Danube Waltz - the cities we were going to with the rich history in each was the leading factor. Seeing the comfort of being on the ship and cruising down the river was total enticing. Unfortunately, we arrived when the river was historically low and did not get to spend the afternoon in Budapest. We got a panoramic bus ride then bused all the way to Vienna by passing Bratislava. We were bused back for a panoramic bus ride tour of the city and no free time again. Had to get back on ship. Next day awoke in Krems and had to move with the water going down more. We moved to Melk and were bused back to the Gotweig Abby. Lots of busing for the first 4 days! The Viking staff and program director bent over backwards trying to please everyone. Lesson learned - Viking should cancel when mother nature is in control. Read Less

GETTING ON AND OFF THE VESSEL VERY SMOOTH AND EFFICIENT, SHIP WAS VERY CLEAN IN ALL AREAS The crew was the best i have ever experienced on any of my 20+ cruises we have taken. The food the first week was not up to my standards. Breakfast was great lunch when we had it was passable dinner the first week was not up to my standards the steaks had no flavor and cold. The soups were weak and loose tasting and the fish did not tasted like they were frozen before cooking. The wines served were excellent. The included tours were very good and informative the only complaint was waiting for the bus after the personal time on shore there was no seating at the meeting place for the buses and after a long day of walking standing for an additional half hour is very trying on the legs and back. The cruise director was probably the best in the business in my opinion he was always nearby to answer any question you had. THE ENTERTAINMENT WAS WHAT I EXPECTED ON A VENUE OF THIS SIZE We enjoyed our time at the lounge and danced until closing every night. FINALLY MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT WAS THE FLIGHT WITH AMERICAN AIRLINES We had no choice of seats and were seated apart from each other until i complained to the desk. Then we got seats going to amsterdam that did not recline and were in the middle on the plane with very little leg room. Sitting next to me was a 300+pound woman that snored all the way there and had an odor that was wrenching. The trip home was horrible as well tight seating screens your could not see for movie watching and seats that also were in the back and reclined a little.. Read Less

We really liked the attention to details. Viking seem to anticipate potential glitches and addresses them before you realized them. Even when the ship was delayed in a lock, the shore excursion that was meeting up with the ship down river found that we were delayed and the Program director, not to panic, took the shore group to a pub to wait our arrival -- when the world gives you lemons . . . It was wonderful to experience new places, foods, cultures both on board and on shore excursions. We added a few optional excursions that were of special interest to us however, the included ones were more than exceptional. I would recommend bringing clothes with expandable waistbands as the food is top notch, it was plentiful. If anyone goes hungry, it is their own choice! The food service staff paid attention to every detail -- even noticed that my soft boiled eggs weren't soft and immediately reordered them. Read Less

Fantastic cruise! Everything was perfect, treated like royalty the entire time. Would change nothing, in fact scheduled another Viking River cruise as soon as we return. All Viking hosts were professional and all crew functions exceeded expectations throughout the entire cruise. Food choices, presentation and table service were five star in my book. The homemade cookies available throughout the day were great an I got to really looking forward to them. The cabin and cabin service were exceptional and surpassed any previous cruise we had been on or any hotel we had ever stayed. I could not say enough good things about our cabin steward, just exceptional service. The entire ship crew were willing and ready to answer any questions and explain just what they were doing at any time. Shore excursions were well coordinated and all tours guides were extremely knowledgeable. The command staff and activities crew keep us updated at all times. The bottled water and lemon scented moist towels handed out upon return from shore excursions were an excellent touch. Read Less

Our choice for this Viking River cruise was based on several factors: 1. an easier / hassle free way to travel through Europe. 2. This Grand European Tour offered so many grand cities to explore, as well as several charming little villages. 3. All the fabulous amenities of the ship and the services provided excelled beyond expectation. The excursions were wonderful and the guides were some of the best I have encountered in all my travels. Everything about the Viking ship can't be beat, but the best part is the warm, caring staff on board the ship. The crew always seemed to anticipate our needs and delivered without hesitation. There was the potential for logistics problems due to lower water on the Danube River, but Viking handled the adjustments so smoothly we barely even noticed. If you are thinking about taking a river cruise, especially a Grand European Tour, I highly recommend Viking River Cruises. Read Less

We had heard wonderful things about Viking and after several ocean cruises with other shipping lines decided it was time to try a river cruise. The ports and shore excursions looked wonderful, and they were. I can't say enough about the service and crew, they were terrific and made our trip extremely enjoyable. The only negative is you really aren't able to use your Veranda when in port because of the way Viking and other boats dock. I mentioned this problem to Viking upon our return and was given a credit. The cabin was functional and kept very clean. The rooms are a little smaller than on an ocean cruise but we were kept so busy we were rarely in our room. There is a great deal of storage space. The bathroom was fine. We enjoyed all the meals on board and took advantage of eating dinner several times up top of the Aquavit Lounge, the food was delicious and the view incredible. Amazing sunsets and had the lounge almost entirely to ourselves. Read Less

A river cruise through Europe has been near the top of our wish list for many years ... and our 15 days on the Grand European Tour was everything we had hoped for. Our program director on Viking Ve, Marik, was brilliant - funny, knowledgeable, caring. His enthusiasm and engagement made the onboard experience special, and his one-man-show as Mozart was amazing. The ship's layout and appointments were excellent, and the staff was delightful. It was so nice to be greeted with a smile and a hello throughout the day and by every member of ship's company we encountered. The food was quite good, the bar well stocked. Shore excursions were informative, if occasionally too brief. The only challenges we encountered were created by Mother Nature: very hot weather, and low water between Nuremburg and the Danube. Viking had the perfect solution to the latter problem: we transferred to Viking Gefjon - a minor inconvenience, but far better than abandoning the cruise. We missed almost nothing, the ships are identical, and we got to meet and be pampered by a new cast (fortunately, our program director transferred to Gefjon with us). Overall, the Grand European Tour on Viking Ve was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. We had hoped to see the Rhine-Meine Canal as we transited it but due to the low water we were unable to transit that section. The ship change was handled very smoothly by the staff and crew. We attended at least one excursion at each port so we had a good overview of the entire area, the excursions were well run. Occasionally we got a guide that was a bit hard to understand but for the most part that wasn't a problem. The process of getting people off the ship and to the designated locations for their excursions was handled in a very smooth fashion. The seemingly impromptu evening cruise of the lights of Budapest the last evening was one of the highlights! We truly enjoyed the time cruising through the scenic countryside and would have enjoyed a little more of that. Our cabin was spacious, comfortable and well appointed and the Service was impeccable. We enjoyed the flexibility of open seating and the opportunity to get to know many of the other passengers by sharing a table with different people throughout much of the cruise. It was a fabulous experience and we will definitely take another Viking Cruise. Read Less

This cruise introduced us to the history and culture of many European countries and ports of call. We stayed in Prague for 3 days for a pre-excursion trip were so glad we did. It was a wonderful city to visit. All of the shore excursions were excellent and we got to enjoy a wonderful concert in Vienna by the Vienna Resident Orchestra. On other excursions we visited abbeys, castles, cathedrals, historic cities and venues and loved every minute of each excursion. The Viking tour guides were excellent. The Cruise Director, the Hotel Manager and the Captain were always available and extremely knowledgeable. The food on board the ship was outstanding with a wide variety of choices and able to satisfy and pallet. The restaurant service was always exemplary as was the cabin service. The really great think about Viking is that virtually everything is included (except for gratuity) in the cost. My best way to explain how I feel about Viking Cruises is that we plan on another Viking cruise in the future. Read Less

The idea of confort and quality expected. Over all the trip was very good, but we need more time a shore, to visit some locations like salzburg, and Munich. Some of the local guides did have issues with racism which came clearly out with me as a hispanic black american in Budapest and some small towns in Germany. A tour guide lady did not to accept me because I was not part of the group and some of the people in the group had to verify to her that I was in the group, that was a little offensive, although I do not have a hyper sensitive behavior about the color of my skin, just because it is not part of mentality to feel like and outsider any where I am. The best experience of the trip was the staff a board the boat, service, food, music and activities in addition to the fact of the size of the group which allowed to a more social interaction with other travelers. We have cruised the Rhine earlier with Viking and were quite pleased by the tours and also the ability to get on and off the ship without taking forever and being run through security constantly, like the large cruise ships. Pulling into small towns and villages and walking a path to the old section is just our style. Yes, there are some coach tours and they are well worth it. On the Rhine, the tour to Colmar cannot be missed, and is close. On the Danube tour, they changed the coach tour from Salzburg (one of our favorite small cities in Europe) to Chesky Krumlov (which we fell totally in love with). It is a long drive from Linz but a beautiful drive through the countryside, and one of the best days of our Danube tour. Starting in Budapest gave us a chance to explore the city by arriving a few days earlier and enjoying the families and restaurants during the Christmas season. Extending a few days in Prague was the same experience, where you have the time to just stroll and get the real feel of a place. Ending the tour in central Europe gives you a further chance to extend somewhere else as well, for an inexpensive plane ride. For us, it was Rome for another 6 days. The portages on the Danube Cruise, including Budapest, Vienna (climbed St. Stephens tower for the view and to burn off calories), and the incomparable towns of Melk and Durnstein are the true Europe still left. We also loved visiting Bratislava, with very eclectic art and a truly friendly people, and of course Passau was marvelous. Having the chance to climb up to forts and castles as we went, because we didn't need to run or miss the ship, made it all the more wonderful for us. We are active and like to add climbing up church towers or hills for views (or a beer) to our daily activity. My only concern, and I've shared it with Viking, was in Vienna, which of course is a large city. After the daily tour they had the option of a night tour to the Opera House which many people took. The coaches picked them up from the ship which was docked quite a way away from anything else. For the many of us who just wanted to go back to town, check out the Christmas lights at night, hear some Jazz, they had no shuttles. The walk from the ship to the metro was quite long and it was dark and at this time of year, chilly. We had no problems, but for many this made it impossible to leave the ship at all, or an expensive cab ride both ways. Suggest they have optional shuttles to at least take passengers to the metro terminal, quite a ways a way, or better yet at a drop off point near the center. And back. It would make Vienna much more accessible for everyone, and what a fantastic city it is. The Ve is one of the newer Viking ships and we had a French Balcony room which is our favorite. We don't usually book balconies as we don't use them, but the French balcony gives you a wall of views and the ability to open one half of it and enjoy the fresh Danube air (and ice, as was the case in December, but we loved it). The cabins are nicely appointed, the bathrooms quite roomy compared to the older ships, and the crew was marvelous as always. They cleaned the room at least twice a day, I think our cabin steward spent more time in my room then I did, but I missed him when we left. The Oktoberfest themed dinner was one of the best I have ever seen in all my years of cruising, the food amazing and beautifully presented, and a terrific oompah band went table to table. Each evening there was a piano player and a themed game or contest. Best bartenders in the business on these ships, and a very nice liquor selection as well. All in all, this cruise totally outdid itself!! We will be back, and will try a Viking Ocean voyage next. Read Less

We chose this cruise for the options available on tours, the lower number of passenger's, and the broad range of countries traveled. We were absolutely delighted with the friendliness, helpfulness of the varied staff. Our tour director knocked it out of the park. I honestly can't see anyone doing his job better. He was freakin awesome! How awesome..... very helpful, flexible, adaptive, informative, well organized, and ultra great sense of humor! So take the following with a grain of salt. I'm a member in a rock band. Something other than just piano and vocals would have been more attractive for evening entertainment. The gentlemen that were providing entertainment were talented and delightful. Also, the older crowd and very limited space wouldn't probably allow for a more complete music experience..in my limited perspective and humble opinion. Food was well prepared, varied, interesting. Hospitality was off the charts. Thoroughly delightful experience. This was our first trip to Europe. It was, for my wife and I, our first trip to celebrate retirement. It will always rank this trip as very memorable! Read Less

The food was varied and delicious for each meal. We enjoyed trying food and wine that was unique to the area and country we were visiting. The excursions gave us a unique view of the town we were in especially because our tour guides were from that specific town. All food was very good with lots of choices lunge had excellent liquor selection. Excursions were somewhat lacking. Some not good value for money. Gold excursion is for kids not adults and way over priced. Vienna and Prague were amazing would love to go again and spent more time there. The last hotel we stayed in before flying home was not up to standard we are used to. Mold in bathroom. I would like to see some area on ship for fitness routine. I would go again in a few years. We took a transatlantic cruise over to Europe and enjoyed the ocean cruise very much with Royal Caribbean. We visited 6 countries on that cruise. We ended up in Copenhagen, Denmark and flew back to Amsterdam to board the Viking Ve Grand European River cruise. Let me begin by saying that we were celebrating our 35th wedding anniversary. Our cabin was tiny and had a peep hole for a window as all the balconies were sold out. We felt smothered and claustrophobic. We tagged our sheets on the bed and they were only changed once, after the first night, because my wine glass on the night stand had tipper over onto the bed. Imagine paying that kind of money and our sheets were never changed after that, ( this was a 14 night cruise).. The spokesman for Viking that we talked to over the phone after our return told my husband that, and I quote, " I don't change my sheets every week", and " you should have told your cabin steward you wanted you sheets changed". One would assume that the sheets would have been changed at least mid-cruise. The ship itself was small with the staterooms accounting for at least half of the ship space. They had a nice dining room, outdoor terrace for another dining option, lounge/bar gathering place for lectures and briefing of the next days events, and a sun deck lounge that ran the length of the ship on the top floor. The top deck stayed closed the majority of the time due to the lock bridges. On the one nice day that it was opened, we attempted to get a little sun but there was no pool, no Jacuzzi, or even a water hose that one could use to cool off. The entertainment on board left much to be desired. There was a gentleman that played the piano for at least 90% of the time when entertainment was called for. They brought in a one time glass blower, a father and son duo that sang and played instruments. and a trio of musicians who played instruments. That was the extent of the entertainment for 2 weeks. The ports/shore excursions were included which the majority of the time were walking guided tours. The tour guide would stand in one place for long periods of time which wore the older people down. The streets in all of the ports were cobblestone and created the risk of falling. I mention this because in most of the ports we noted sight seeing tour buses that were available but never used by Viking. The only buses that were ever used were the ones to get us back to the ship as it moved to a different location while we were on the walking tours due to the congestion on the rivers and the locks. They offered other excursions but cost extra. The food on the ship was excellent. The service of the wait staff was equally excellent. The wine and beer flowed freely during lunch and dinner, however the wine was cheap tasting and watered down. We bought a drink package to get a better quality beer and wine.. Now, let me tell you about the "so called" Concierge on board. He gets a grade F in our book. We had asked him to book us a private country side tour when we were in Melk, Germany. I had actually wanted to go to Innsbrook. He said from the beginning that it was too far from where we were. So we asked him to book us a country side trip in Vienna as we were to dock there the next day for 2 days. We also asked him to have the wait staff acknowledge our anniversary like they had been doing for other couples and singing "happy birthday" wishes. Finally, we asked him to book us a really nice restaurant in Budapest for dinner on the last day. ( this request was made days in advance as well). He suggested that we eat with others who were staying on in Budapest like ourselves. We explained that we wanted to eat alone. Okay so count them, 3 requests. He promised to get back with us and let us know what he booked, etc. He failed to deliver all 3 requests, instead blowing us off every time he saw us. Again we were celebrating our 35 year anniversary. When we were leaving the ship on the last day we had no help with our luggage as we waited on a taxi. Mind you we had been traveling for 6 weeks. Guess who was standing outside as we disembarked, Marco himself waiting for his tips. Would we ever cruise viking again? Hell No !!!!! Read Less

The ship was quiet and clean. The food was very good, but breakfast was mostly the same selection of hot and cold foods and THE SAME pastries EVERY DAY, which got very boring. We missed not having access to self serve laundry features, such as an ironing board. Thankfully, the dress code was very informal and relaxing. Bottled water was always in your room, and also handed out on the way to every excursion. The staff was very hard working and friendly. One odd thing of noticable difference from ocean cruises, was the lack of available snacks between meals. There were self service cookies and hot drinks available, but no pizza or other "proteins". Then, the cookies were taken away over an hour before dinner. Dinner was served at 7. So, You had to keep your refrigerator stocked with cheese, fruit, etc. from the breakfast buffet. It was just odd, and rather disconnected. Then, out of the blue, they served a wisp of canapes and a few themed drinks at about four of the afternoon briefings. Those essences of cordiality were nice. Too bad they were so inconsistent. The shore excursions were adequate, but on tight schedules, loaded with random trivia, and lacking of much free time. The one activity that got old, was having to sit through a daily briefing before dinner each night about the following day's activities. If you didn't go, you could turn it on in your room on the TV. But, it was 30-45 minutes that just cut out any chance of some down time before dinner, when it would have been nice to enjoy a shower and or some quiet time on the balcony. Since they had the meetings, they didn't bother to put any details in the daily newsletter, which was mostly useless. The director's name was Kane. He was very thorough with details, accommodating, and a personable "propogandist". But, the daily briefings became referred to as "The Kane Show" by the fourth day. He was pleasant, but it just got to be too much of an elaborate yet average ordenance of details that could have been handed out in printed form. These are just minor frustrated perspectives. Go on a Viking river cruise! The sites are amazing, and the company and crew make a solid effort to make you feel like important guests. Read Less

The crew on the both ships were superior they all go above & beyond to take care of all of the passengers needs. Made us feel like royalty. The dining room on both ships was elegant, yet you felt at home with the staff that made sure we were enjoying your dining experience. Our wine glasses were never empty. Who could ask for anything more!!! All of the ports & excursions met all of our expectations, very well organized, & tour guides were well informed of the areas we were visiting. We are glad that there were no children on our cruise. That's what Disney is for. The Viking Ve is a wonderful ship with the most OUTSTANDING CREW. I would definitely book another Viking cruise. I loved the cuisine on this ship and the way it was served. I wanted for nothing. When sailing I loved sitting in the lounge having a cocktail checking my email and chatting with new people. In the evening after dinner the lounge had music and dancing. Several nights there was wonderful entertainment on board or some fun games with the staff. Maya was our Program Director and she was OUTSTANDING. We extended our tour with 2 nights in Amsterdam and she came to the aid of the group in the Okura hotel with a tour problem to the tulip gardens. Compared to ocean cruises, this type of cruise is very laid back, yet full of activities. The food was excellent and the staff was superb and during the cruise we found out that from the captain on down, each hand pitched in wherever there was a need. The inclusion of excursions is a wonderful addition to a cruise and they were each and everyone very enlightening,, mainly because of the excellent guides at each of the ports. From an American citizen standpoint, it is hard to fathom the ages that some of these different cities and towns have been in existence. The complimentary choice of wines or soft drinks at dinner or lunch is a nice perk. We would greatly recommend this type of cruise and we are looking forward to another one in the near future. They took notes of any special requests (extra pillows, lotions, extra hangers, etc) and made sure that all these items were in your stateroom on the new ship. Friends we were traveling with left juice cans in the refridgerator on the first ship and when they got to the new ship they found the two juice cans in their refidgerator! The new ship we transfered to was the Viking Gefjon and the only complaint we all had was with the people working at the reception. They were not very friendly and there was a woman in particular that was very rude. When checking out and paying the final bill she was very rude if you did not give the recommended amount for gratuity. We felt this was uncalled for because she has no idea if we left euros in the envelopes left in the staterooms and also we gave some of the crew that we encountered on a daily basis personal gratuities. This left a bit of a sour taste to what was otherwise an amazing trip over all. We will most definately be doing another river cruise with Viking. Read Less

After numerous foreign travels by air and coach, our experience with Viking and Viking VE fully met or exceeded all expectations for comfort, meeting our diverse interests and providing an overall satisfying experience. From the moment we stepped off our plane in Amsterdam until we departed Budapest, Viking and the crew of the VE were there with friendliness, guidance and help. Our hotel in Amsterdam and accommodations on the VE were spot on what we expected from Viking and desired. The Viking VE crew was simply outstanding. Viking's attention to detail, efficiency of operations and provision for multiple options for their travelers is unsurpassed in our experience. Our satisfaction was such that we immediately signed up for another Viking cruise as soon as we got home! Read Less

We had a great cruise on Viking's new ship the Ve. The room was comfortable but a little tight. We had a small outside balcony which was adequate. The bathroom was small but very usable and the shower was great. Lighting was excellent in the room. Wifi was available in our room but was way too slow !! (satellite connection) TV was large and had decent programing including cameras in the ship. The food was good and plentiful but not very creative and rather bland to the taste. Unfortunately the only drinks that were part of the all inclusive package was WITH the meals. (pretty chincy) The shore trips were all very nice and "adequate". The use of what they call a quiet box was fantastic for the shore trips. There were numerous extra cost shore trip options. Fair amount of free time to explore on your own. We felt that the 14 day trip that spent a lot of time in Germany was just a lot of seeing the same things. All our stops were picture perfect but became monotonous! One stop in Germany for this type of trip would have been enough !! Our program director Kane was excellent and made the trip better than expected. Everybody on the crew was very friendly, gracious and helpful. I was very impressed by the consistency of their training. Too many old folks as guests though not enough of an age mix. Read Less
