We loved Viking river cruises, and decided to experience their ocean cruise. We visited nine different islands, one each day, and cruised overnight. While a few hours on each island were not sufficient to see everything, we saw the highlights that time allowed. Our cabin was the best of all our other 25 cruises and the bathroom was spacious with a huge glass door shower. The heated floor was really nice. Since the ship is new, everything was beautiful. We visited the specialty restaurants, and were pleased with the variety of selections on the buffet. We didn't use the spa or fitness area, but we did visit them to see what was offered. The lounges were very welcoming and comfortable. The main pool area was never crowded and was a great place to relax. The vocalists were very talented and we didn't miss big theater productions at all. Having a self-serve laundry allowed us to bring home a suitcase full of clean clothes. The staff was helpful, friendly and excellent. Great trip! Read Less

traveled as a single with another couple. The food was great, the tours were great, the size of the ship was great. The crew was friendly and efficient, My only issue was that as a single person who had paid double I had hoped to find other single on the cruise but did not,as a result iI did feel awkward and I am sure that it did flavour my enjoyment of the trip. The included airfare was very difficult to manage as a single, I was initially booked with my friends on both flights to and from Europe but 2 weeks before the flight was to have left Vanguards airfare department put on different flights, we had to cancel those flights at a group rate and replace them with higher priced tickets in order to travel together. I supposed that had I been a seasoned traveler I might have decided to take a different trip. all in all it is a nice trip for a couple but not that comfortable for someone traveling solo, at least not for me as a widower. The educational presentations and tours I would recommend. Read Less

We love the service, the food, and the ship. The crew are just very effective, very courteous and very pleasant. Martha, the Services Manager is excellent. She is so helpful. Food was great. All the cooks, service folks and the managers are very accommodating. We had a great time. The shows were great, very entertaining. The program manager, Aarean, is great. Port Talk is very helpful. He was doing a great job. Internet was slow. Need some improvement. The included excursion could have a little more "substance". The ship, Viking Star, is beautiful, state of the art. We enjoyed the pool, the sauna, the steam room very much. The Nordic room was too cold for us. The room was spacious. Bath room is very roomy and very clean. Mohumad kept the room and the bath room very clean. He was doing a great job. Overall, we love it. We have booked 2017 already. Read Less

I picked this cruise because of the itinerary - the opportunity to visit a range of fabulous cities and fjord towns - on what was billed as a new, stylish and not too large cruise liner. I was not disappointed. The ship is the style of the show - like living for a fortnight in a 'boutique museum', a mix of the modern scandi and a wealth of historical detail. It had all the facilities you might need and all of a high quality, designed with function and beauty in mind. Cabins were well designed, comfortable and attractive and well maintained by the friendliest room service you could wish for. Similarly, the dining facilities and food were of a high quality, from the homely Mamsens with its jam and waffles to the highly innovative, taste bud tingling Chef's Table. And make sure you have a cocktail in the Explorer's Lounge whilst passing through the Stockholm archipelago, the fjords or whilst watching the sun go down - a recipe for a magical moment. The pool areas were attractive and well maintained and swimming in the infinity pool in sunshine in St Petersburg was one of the unexpected highlights of the journey. A free trip was included at each port - I only paid for extras in St Petersburg (Gold Room and Hermitage - well worth doing), the ballet in St Petersburg and the jazz cruise in Copenhagen (pricey but a wonderful evening out). After feeling very herded on the Helsinki trip (lots of ships in port and the city felt under strain) we decided to do most of the other ports on our own which enabled us to miss the groups and investigate things of particular interest to us. We did, however, participate in the free trip in Warnemunde (alternative to Berlin) and this turned out to be a lovely day with a brewery visit (beer at 9.30am!!), guided tour of an incredible cathedral and a boat trip with fabulous views - a surprising gem of a day and all included! The following 'extras' were lovely bonuses: the quality of the lectures delivered by the guest lecturers that were informative and helped you to build knowledge as your trip progressed; the music everywhere on the ship - of a high quality but not too loud or obtrusive; the laundrette (not exciting but making packing and dressing much easier!); the fabulous spa facility - no need to pay a penny to fully immerse yourself in the Nordic spa system and the facility is usually nearly empty; the shuttle bus service at all larger ports (if you're the sort of person who doesn't like large, herded groups then this is the service for you - free transport to the heart of your port, a good map with a note of pick up point and you're set up for a great day!). This is not a family cruise ship, it is not an all singing all dancing entertainment ship, it is not a dressing up and having your photo taken at every opportunity ship. Instead it is a relaxing, informative, safe environment from which to explore a fabulous range of ports in a style that suits you. My only gripe - there was only a minimal reduction on double occupancy rates for a single traveller! A better deal would be the icing on the cake! Read Less

This was my first cruise as a retired solo traveler. I was so impressed with the beautiful Viking ocean ship, the Star. It was the most elegant, wonderful, relaxing cruise. From the minute our plane landed in Barcelona, the Viking representatives were waiting and guided us to the bus for a quick trip to the ship. Flawless. We were competently and graciously welcomed aboard and given our room keys. My luggage arrived quickly to my room. My room was spacious and had everything I could ever want. The ship itself was perfect. Traveling alone, I never really felt alone. Everyone was very welcoming. There were many dining choices from elegant to informal. All the food was excellent. The ports of call were really beautiful. Tours were very well run. We stopped in Touron, France, Monaco, Lucca, Pisa and ended in Rome. When 'unrest' was found in one of our up-coming ports, the ship bypassed it and we had an extra day in beautiful Italy. Entertainment onboard was excellent with great speakers and I especially appreciated the Christmas service on board. My husband and I had been on 2 Viking river cruises and the ocean cruise was just as wonderful. I am looking forward to my next Viking ocean cruise! Read Less

How does one begin to rate spending more than one week in the utmost luxury, state-of-the- art accommodations -- the Viking Star. For me this was a once in a lifetime experience! The Viking Star is beautifully designed and tastefully decorated. The state rooms were exceptionally clean!!! large and bright, having every accommodation found in the finest hotel. All of the staff that I countered on a daily bases - those assigned to room service, the dining facilities, reception areas were particularly responsive and gracious in their interactions; as well, those with whom I had chance encounters such as the individuals who were responsible for maintaining and sailing the ship. Mohammed was responsible for my area - and he was the best!! The dining accommodations/service and meals were lovely. A wide variety of menu choices, tasty, and artfully presented - including the local cuisine Definitely the entertainment was top notch! The Viking Star singers and dancers - an Orlando based entertainment company - were multi talented and offered a variety of music and dance events. The enrichment lectures were particularly thought provoking and stimulating for me personally. While I was not able to attend everyone of these lectures these were available in our the room on the large TV - so watched those at a later time. In the future it would be great if all of the entertainment could be available to watch at a later time in the room. I have one suggestion. I often must travel alone. Therefore, it would certainly be financially more appealing if Viking ships offered (single) state rooms for 1 person. In summary, the Viking Star Mediterranean cruise was wonderful! Read Less

The Viking Star is a wonderful ship & with it's exemplary crew the on-board expeience was fantastic. This was our second Viking cruise & I must say Viking does it right. If there was any detail requiring attention, I would say that the "off-ship" experience could be improved on. We were booked on a cut-rate charter airline on the trip to Barcelona & back again from Venice. The seating was extremely tight & the staff rather indignant & at times rude. Customer service could be greatly improved. Considering that this trip was paid 2 years in advance & the premium price paid for this luxury cruise,Viking should do a better job of improving the total travel experience by having booked a first rate airline. On 2 of our shore excursions, the guides "voice-box" was not working. An excursion is almost totally wasted when you cannot hear the description of what you are seeing. Notwithstanding these 2 issues, we will still fondly remember this trip as the hi-lite of our cruising experiences. Read Less
