This was our first Viking cruise. The experience was as wonderful as our river cruise. Service, food and itinerary outstanding. Guides were exceptional and we felt like we had real insider views from the locals of each country. The cruise offered a wide range of excursions and we enjoyed traveling by foot, bus, boats and cable cars. The food was the best we ever had on a cruise. Dining was open and it was easy to get a table whatever time we choose to dine. No long lines or hassle with reservations. The service and staff was outstanding. Rooms always clean, room service 24x7 in addition to all the diverse places to eat. Seafood buffet nightly was amazing and food in the dining room diverse and tasty. We were wowed by the entertainment, the house band and singing crew were wonderful. Everyone was up close and personal, it was a wonderful experience. Read Less

This is our first Ocean cruise experience and it was absolutely wonderful! Our cabin was roomy and I was impressed about how the storage space was designed. The bed was really comfy and the bathroom was large for a stateroom. Although electrical outlets in the bathroom were only for razors or toothbrushes, there were ample 220 and 110 outlets in the main cabin. I really enjoyed having a port to charge my phone and IPad near our bed. Our cabin Stewart's were also wonderful and serviced our cabin twice daily. The goodies in the refrigerator were a real treat! I can't say enough about the dining options. There were so many choices and varieties of food. On several occasions , they offered special buffets specializing in foods of the regions. Although the specialty Italian and Chefs table Restuarant were a great, we really enjoyed the open dining of the World Cafe. We visited the Explorers lounge several times to enjoy the music but we loved watching the scenery off the bow. Lastly, we want to thank Viking for arraigning the unique welcoming at some of the Ports. In Scotland, bagpipes greeted us on 2 stops and the crew welcomed us home with music and dancing. OUR CRUISE was the British Isle Explorer. Read Less

This cruise was to celebrate a special anniversary, our 50th and we wanted a very special cruise to a place we had never been. The 7 Night Iconic Western Mediterranean cruise did not disappoint. We felt pampered in every way. The ship is beautiful. The food was delicious and all of the Star's employees were always eager to please the passengers in every way. The entertainment on board was wonderful. The bathroom in the stateroom exceeded my expectation. It put a smile on my face every time I want in it and the heated floor was such a treat. All of the toiletries were high quality. I didn't have to use any that I brought, which I always do just to make sure. An especially nice perk is that every deck has three washer and dryers for guests to use free of charge, including detergent and an iron and ironing board. I was able to come on board with clean cloths and leave with clean cloths. I would highly recommend a Viking cruise. You will not be disappointed. Read Less

We had gone on a Viking River Cruise, and were so impressed with the quality that we decided to try an Ocean Cruise. We added a 2 day stay in Barcelona before the cruise and a 3 day stay in Tuscany after the cruise. Everything was arranged by Viking for this. Upon arriving in Barcelona, we were greeted by Viking reps at the luggage pick up and they graciously guided us through customs and to our transportation to our hotel At the Hotel we were again greeted by a Viking representative to lead us to checking in to the hotel, and since we were early for our room, he led us to an area where other reps talked to us about possible excursions were could take while in Barcelona. Absolutely no pressure was put on us to take any excursions at all. The rep answered all of our questions and guided us to an excursion that would show us Gaudi sites in town. Our room was ready when we finished. The recommended tour was great, as was the night of flamenco dancing they recommended. We were given clear instructions about where to leave our luggage for the trip to the ship, and that all went seamlessly. At the ship we were again greeted graciously, and given champagne while we waited for our room where we found all our luggage already delivered. We were almost immediately greeted by our steward who answered all our questions and made sure we had everything we needed. The next 13 days were glorious. the excursions were well planned and left plenty of free time for us to explore on our own. back at the ship, the service was amazing. The staff could not do enough for you, and the food....I didn't miss a meal which was the only problem with the trip. Many of the staff knew us by name after seeing them only a few times and made us fee as if we were the only couple they needed to take care of. We visited 4 of the restaurants on board and the food was excellent in each. The 3 days in Tuscany afterward I would recommend to everyone. Bothe the hotel and oyr guide were amazing. Read Less

Have traveled with Viking on a River Cruise in 2015. Best ever- and this Ocean Cruise was fantastic as well. We extended our trip by two days before embarking and two days after the cruise ended. Everything went smoothly. Having the Viking personnel arrange our air flights, connections, and stays before and after the cruise made the experience all the better. The crew, stateroom, food and entertainment were all excellent. All of the excursions were well planned and enriching. We had the best possible tour guides and the process and organization of the excursions was terrific. The food at each of the restaurants was excellent and the staff made us feel welcomed no matter where we went to eat. The cabin staff were friendly and made our stay almost like being at home. We have nothing but the best reviews of our trip and would gladly travel with Viking again soon. Thank you Read Less

The best review is....WE BOOKED ANOTHER CRUISE while onboard! Our positives are too many to mention here...glorious sunrises with breakfast on our private veranda are at the top of that long list! Viking is a well-oiled machine...from coordination of airport transportation, embarkation, the fabulous excursion options, how we were organized to exit the ship for excursions, dining options, OMG! We felt spoiled, spoiled, spoiled. Our only negative was the post-extension in Rome. Going forward, we will consider a pre-extension....the post-extension affected our relaxed mood following the cruise where we were spoiled, but I’m sure that was the hustle and bustle of Rome. Wish Viking had offered us excursions in advance in Rome during the post-extension trip just as they did during the cruise as all cruise excursions were excellent. Of the two Viator tours that we booked on our own in Rome, one was phenomenal and one was a disappointment (the most expensive one!). The group dinner on our last night in Rome, that our Viking rep at the hotel coordinated after our arrival in Rome, was a night to remember, so.... more of that please. I personally needed to pre-arrange in advance to assure we took full advantage of our short time in Rome. So, giving us advance options for Rome through Viking would have been preferred. I heard a few others on the cruise who were also in the post-extension trip say the same. We now plan to take many more cruises with Viking. THANK YOU VIKING!!! Read Less

We've wanted to visit these countries for some time and have enjoyed a Viking river cruise. In addition, we preferred to travel on a smaller ship, rather than a typical large ocean cruise ship. The Viking Sky has a well-designed interior: the public areas, like atriums, are spacious and attractively decorated. Our cabin, while not luxurious, was exactly what we needed, as we did not spend much time in it. The variety and quality of food was very good, not exquisite dining, but one cannot realistically exquisite when they are feeding over 900 passengers. We believe that the food was as good as can be expected on a cruise ship. A group of four talented vocalists backed up by four very capable musicians provided most of the entertainment. Of the various shows they performed, we especially enjoyed their tributes to Abba and the Beatles. In addition to these shows, the cruise director organized game nights and comedy acts. We enjoyed visiting all of the ports. The guides provided informative and interesting background information on the locales we visited. The optional excursions covered a wide range of activities. We wished only that Viking offered more than one "included" excursion per port. An important feature of the ship for me was its fitness center which was large and well-equipped with elliptical trainers, stationary bikes, treadmills, resistance machines and free weights. The staff and crew provided amazing service. They were always friendly and showed interest in the passengers. Every one of them we met tried to make our cruise a pleasant satisfying experience. We have enjoyed numerous Viking river cruises and hoped this first Viking cruise ship experience would be equally fantastic. It was. Nothing is left to chance with Viking and everything is first class. The thought of getting on one of the many massive cruise ships with 3,000 of our closest friends is hideous. Viking does it all with a smaller ship, with all balcony staterooms, and much more space for outstanding public areas. As we expected, service is simply magnificent. Our steward/butler, Gede, did a fantastic job. Our stateroom, #6005, was always immaculate and the bathroom always shiny and clean. We had plenty of space for our clothing, including numerous drawers and a nice closet. The sofa and chairs were comfortable, and our balcony was of a generous size. Dining was very good. There were at least 6 dining options, all included in the price. The food in each was well prepared, and the variety was appreciated. The spa is perhaps the best of any cruise line. The entire spa is available for no extra charge. We did pay for massages and pedicure. The gym/workout facility consisted of three rooms with top-notch equipment and elipticals/treadmills, etc. Entertainment was varied and mostly very good, if not excellent. How nice to have no casino, no climbing walls, no water slides, and no one under 18 years of age. As Viking touts, this is a thinking person's cruise ship. There were numerous lectures about the ports/history/shopping/human interests. It is possible to wear yourself out with the excursions. Some ports had more than 15 options, with at least one included in the price of the cruise. Most of the ones we selected involved a good deal of walking...on cobblestones. We were glad we brought sturdy shoes. Except for Norway, where it rained virtually the entire time, we had good but cool weather. It was especially nice in St. Petersburg and Stockholm. Jupiter is a beautiful ship, with many places to relax, hide, and kick back. We enjoyed the lovely afternoon tea several times. Be sure to ask for a tour of the bridge, which was a great experience. We had already booked another cruise, Bali to Bangkok next April. The wonderful experience on Jupiter lets us look forward to that trip on the Orion even more. It was particularly nice to be on our smaller ship when docked next to one of the monster ships. We counted our blessings and silently gave thanks for the crew of Jupiter. Read Less

This was the best cruise we have ever been on! Our first experience with Viking was a horrible river cruise. We were very hesitant to go on another Viking cruise. However, this Viking ocean cruise was the best cruise ever! We have already signed up for another one in 2020!! The ship was always spotless even with all the rain we encountered, every crew member was always extremely courteous and professional, the food was exceptional and wait staff were highly trained, every organizational skill was flawless from the docking procedures, evacuation drill, getting passengers to shore excursions, or even daily announcements. The Explorer desk people were very helpful and professional no matter what our inquiries were about. We had 2 days before the cruise, arranged by Viking. The arrangements were wonderful. A very enjoyable hotel, location, and accommodations. We can not say enough positive things about this Viking Jupiter and all of its crew! We are excited for our next Viking cruise in 2020! Read Less

Bartenders were total service and personable, especially Carlos and CJay. Interesting excursions and we had a wonderful time in each port. The food!!! Oh my, we didn't have anything that wasn't fantastic. My husband was especially happy about the Alaskan King crab legs, we went for those, then went for a drink At the Explorer's Lounge for drinks, then to dinner. Our favorite dinner was the Chef's table Mexican night. Loved Ivan for wine and Mario for service! The spa was wonderful and we ended up getting massages which is just what we needed after all the excursions. Excellent masseuses! Cruise director, she was amazing. "See you around the ship." OK this site wants me to type more so here it goes. My lovely wife of 32 years were considering the world cruise and she said Whoa! Our first experience on an ocean cruise was a tiny ship in Alaska I think it held 60 people. That was an amazing experience and our son was 10 then. Our second was Carnival Cruise the Mexican riviera and it was horrible even with the suite we hated every moment from embarkation to debarkation. We did that cruise for our teenage son to socialize all he did was read LOL. We have done 4 AMAWaterways trips and loved them but those were river cruises. So When it was announced Viking was doing a world cruise the same day I booked ES1 cabin 4000 put a deposit down and happily called my life partner and she said WHAT ARE YOU CRAZY! She pointed out the horrible Carnival Cruise experience and said what the ^%$& are you thinking. I promptly called the best travel agent and she was yea its a long trip but its the best ocean cruise not a Carnival cruise at all. She suggested a 14 day and I went for the 21 and suite 4000. With that said here we go. First the transfer to the hotel (four nite pre cruise) was flawless and tours amazing in a wonderful hotel. Our guide was awesome picture My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Embarkation was smooth as silk. The room; well lets just say like home. Our steward Mohamed and his team made us feel like we were at home and we wanted for nothing. Never waited in a line and never for want of a pool chair or towel or a drink. Our mornings were greeted by Gregory the Viking bartender, he also woks in the Restaurant, Alway a pleasant smile and makes the best coffee on the ship in fact the best I ever had. He always put Mr Dan and Mrs Lisa on the lids with smiley faces. The food was incredible Ellard and Glen always made us feel like we were the only ones in the restaurants. The Kitchen table experience was our favorite shopping with the Chefs in Monaco was Perfect. All tours were amazing and frankly to many to thank we cant think of much to change. What we did not like: The internet is horrible I can fly at 40,000 feet at 680 MPH and get better internet. The TV channels are lacking but movie selection was great. And on departure they had a lousy exchange rate to pay your bill in EUROS and a 3% fee. Were in Europe for gods sake be fair and convenient. Kind of a sucker punch at the end of the cruise. I just put it on my card and got a way better exchange rate and no fees from bank of america. We booked two more ocean voyages with Viking and were looking at that world cruise! :) Read Less

Our stateroom was small but included everything we needed. The staff is very responsive and attentive. The entertainment includes singing and dancing and lectures by knowledgeable scholars. The food was excellent and includes two specialty restaurants that are not additionally priced and only need reservations. Wine and beer are included with lunch and dinner. You can also eat outside overlooking amazing scenery. There are two pools and two hot tubs. There is a gym and a spa center where you can go to use the steam or sauna as well as get treatments. The concierge desk was never crowded and had at least two people working at all times. For the most part our included excursions were good. There were a couple of itineraries that could use tweaking. My wife and I had done a dozen or more ocean cruises and 2 Viking River cruises, but we'd not yet done a Viking Ocean cruise. We'd seen how they'd received Travel & Leisure magazines top ocean cruise line all four years they'd been in existence, so we thought we should give it a try. The ship was just right. Not huge like many we'd been on, but with all the amenities we cared about. Nice dining rooms, indoor and outdoor swimming pools, showroom, bars & lounges, a gym and thermal spa, and countless places to sit and hang out. The food and drink in all of the eating areas (World Cafe, Restaurant, Manfredi's, & Chef's Table) were excellent. The staff were friendly and attentive. We had a Deluxe Veranda cabin and it was exceptionally spacious compared to what we're accustomed to. The entertainment staff were very talented and versatile. We made it a point to make every evening's show and were never disappointed. The included excursions were overall great and the extra excursions we chose were wonderful. The ports and surrounding areas we visited were tremendous. Every country on this trip (England, Ireland, Northern Ireland, Norway, Scotland, and Wales) was special in its own way. The Viking extension option we chose in Bergen had us in a hotel that was right in the heart of the 'happening' part of Bergen (Bryggen). Trip of a lifetime! Read Less

We chose Into the Midnight Sun on the Viking Star because the itinerary was appealing and we find cruising with Viking to be enjoyable. Viking is attractive because their associates are friendly, engaging, sincerely concerned for our welfare and pay close attention to making certain that all details are covered. The itinerary included a pre-cruise option to visit Reykjavik, Iceland. We enjoyed visiting the Blue Lagoon; the national park and its fabulous waterfall; and the city of Reykjavik. Our cruise started in Bergen, Norway and continued on the inside passage past the Arctic Circle to Norway's northernmost point, the North Cape. On the way we visited breathtaking scenic fjords and small villages. The landscape photo opportunities were endless from daybreak to sleep time as there was no darkness. On our way to London, we had relaxing days at sea prior to reaching Scotland's Orkney and Shetland islands where we visited Viking settlements that dated back 5000 years. The final leg of our voyage was exceptional as our large ship navigated the Thames River from the English Channel to Greenwich, London. Read Less

My wife and I are in our late 60's and still quite active and like to travel with friends. This will be our second Ocean cruise and we have done two other Viking River Cruises. I like the cruise idea since you pack and unpack only once and you travel at night to a new port. On this cruise we were able to see the diversity in the different countries in the British Isles and go to many places where we would probably not go to, all of which were interesting to us. Usually I would have extended the trip on the front end in London, because it is such an amazing city, but we had been there for a week at Christmas with our daughter and had seen a lot of the sights. We did fly in early Sunday and had a full day, although a bit tired to explore the city. We are pretty good getting around ourselves and booked the inside Buckingham Palace and garden tour at 12:15. We LOVED getting to see inside the Palace and the grounds. Definitely try to do that if you go. I will now try to summarize the different parts of the cruise. The Jupiter was stunning. It was just like our first boat with probably very minor tweeks for improvement that we would not even notice. There was a great diversity of places to be on the boat and be a quiet or active as you want. The boat was big, but not too big. It never seemed crowded to me. The Spa area was very well done with a nice changing areaa and indoor pool with a very cool Nordic experience cold room onboard. Their was also a pool in a large atrium area that have plenty of seats near the windows on the outside. Finally there was a great small infinity pool and hot tub on the aft on level 7. Our room was a deluxe veranda which was fine for us. The bed was very comfortable and a king size bed. I am 6'4" and slept well. The bathroom was a good size but crowded for 2 people. We loved our veranda but honestly did not use it much. The Crew----We found the crew on the Jupiter excellent and very hardworking. From the General Manager to all areas of operation- we thought the crew was outstanding. We were able to interact with many crew members and the one theme that came out was that they loved Viking better than others they had been on. The crew was very happy. We have been to nice resorts like Sea Island and found the level of service on par with that experience. Food-We found the food very good to excellent . I thought the best food was at Manfredis (the Italian option) but that is also my favorite food. When you get your first opportunity go ahead and book reservations at either this restaurant or the Chef's Table, both of which was good. The Dining Room option was great also and usually had a wide variety of meal options. Since we ate at different areas in the dining room, we did not have the same server every night. We usually ate at the buffet for breakfast which had GREAT fresh fruit, about any breakfast option you could imagine, and omelet stations. Bottom line-The food ranges from good to excellent. You will not go hungry. Oh, I almost forgot, Mamsen's was a grill option on level 7 toward the pool area. They have great grill options and salads which were delicious. Entertainment-We found this area to be good to excellent. The four young singers were quite good and gave a variety of performances whcih we loved. There were also several times when local talent was brought in which was fun. The band on the ship was EXCELLENT and were the male and female vocalists. They performed both in the theater as back up to the singers and by themselves in Torshavn, a small lounge . We found the music excellent, but do not expect a carnival type atmosphere on this boat. Speakers- The speakers were good not great, but still very imformative. We have had better speakers on other boats, but thought they were good and discussed some tough topics like BREXIT and the Ireland-Northern Island issue. Cruise Director-Heather. I saved the best for last. WE have been on 5 other cruises and Heather was the best BY FAR cruise director we have ever experienced. She was a great speaker, funny, on topic and talented. In a previous life she was an opera singer and had to put together a show at the last minute (5 PM for a 9:00 pm show) due to a sore throat of one of the singers. Her performance was outstanding!!! But, I loved just her daily talks and her general interaction. She had the ability to make mundane things interesting. Excursions--We found the excursions to be good and gave a lot of options. Since we booked this trip very late-in June, we could not sign early, but found that most of tours opened uo that we wanted. The only negative is getting on and off buses and is a process which they handled quite well. I would give the tour leaders high marks in each area!! We usually did the included tour and then did things on our own at the other parts of the day. I did talk to other that did some of the options and they all seemed to like them. One tip is when you are in Invergorton and you play golf, there is a Top Ten golf course in the WORLD about 30 minutes away called Royal Dornoch. You can book you own times and but you will need a morning time, as you must be back on the boat by 4:30. I did this on my own and rented a car from Ken's for the day. Amazing course -it is my favorite course ever and I have played all the Open courses. Finally, on the Bergen stop I booked the Norway in a Nutshell trip. It is a series of trains, buses and ships which shows you fiords and beautiful country. It is about 10 hours but well worth it. There is no hand holding or person, just tickets but it works quite well if you can get around and feel comfortable travelling on your own. We loved the trip and I guess the only negative was trying to book a future trip. We met with the future trip person and just did not enjoy the experience. I liked the option, just not the experience and we chose not to book. In summary, Viking ships, crew and experiences are great!!! we plan to come back in the future. One final note- if both you and your wife drink, the drink option is a good deal for part of your trip. We did not do it, but some of our friends did and loved it. Also, since we were travelling just with us, it allowed us to meet some amazing new friends we hope to see in the future! Read Less

Always wanted to do an Alaska cruise. As this year was our 50TH wedding anniversary we chose to celebrate by going to Alaska with Viking. We were not disappointed. Overall I would rate the cruise as excellent. Up to Viking standards, we had gone on a Viking River cruise in 2014 and had a great time. Couple of things - the excursion included for the Rocky Narrows Point was a bit thin, the native dancers were great. The dinner island cruise was a disappointment, we were promised a gourmet feast, the food was OK but not gourmet and we had to ear at 4pm. Consider changing this to a lunch cruise. The extended stay in Anchorage at the Hilton was not up to Viking or Hilton standards, the hotel was old and tired and the hallways were dirty. When it was time to get off the ship we were told we had to have our bags out the night before. This was a major inconvenience -- put this in the information kit that we get before we leave for the cruise as it was a surprise. But overall we had a great time and Viking did a great jog, food was great, staff were excellent, lots of good memories. Read Less

We Carefully Choose viking Orion for our Alaska cruise when first available in 2016 because of ships open vista views and as a small ship also very importantly the itinerary and full package details . As our first Viking voyage we have been very satisfied and loved the ship it’s ambience decor space and lovely staff. With the amazing Alaskan scenery and fantastic wildlife and wilderness al around us we had one of our best ever holidays thank you viking, We started with a pre cruise in Vancouver lovely city, wonderful hotel by the bay , the pre cruise tour and lunch alfresco after boarding and sail out was lovely with seaplanes landing and taking off around us , and boats of all descriptions paddle steamers , sailing and small pleasure cruising craft to other ships then the cruise up the inside passage humpbacks sighting wonderful scenery sunsets and all enhanced by the ship! Really very good food right through the voyage onboard Orion majority of our meals we ate seafood,. Enjoyed all of the restaurants onboard, open seating only waited the once for a table but seated in restaurant reception with offers of drinks! There’s also a bar in the restaurant where you can have a pre dinner drinks . We enjoyed all our ports of calls and trips with only one complaint about the lunch on our Haines bear search and wildlife tour which was dealt with with a small refund to compensate however no bears seen but then that’s wildlife although we were probably not going to see any as Haines had hosted the state fair a few days earlier, trip highlights amazing Juneau glacier helicopter and dogsledding and glacier and whales trips , Valdez sail out amazing beautiful weather swimming in the infinity pool and hot tub and escorted out by high speed coast guard rigid inflatable with machine gun mounted and manned past all the Valdez salmon fishing fleets which were laying nets ! A James Bond moment! The ship was immaculate, the food was superb, the spa was wonderful and the service without parallel! So nice to have free drinks and spa! Loved the pure water in my room every day! The special restaurants were wonderful and we dined there more than once without a fee each time! The staff was very friendly and made a point to learn our names. The food was much better than the other 3 cruise lines we’ve been on. MUCH Having free on demand television with current movies and some of our favorite television programs like NCIS (all 3) was also a nice touch! They gave us a shore excursion at every port, it is nice to have but some were less than exciting and you still pay for anything decent. I was afraid I’d miss the entertainment as we have done many Disney cruises but we found plenty to do and the entertainment that was provided was excellent, we especially enjoyed the classical musicians. The opportunity to visit Scandinavian countries through an ocean cruise. This was our first Viking cruise. The entire staff was very friendly, courteous, and helpful to us. We also appreciated the very helpful assistance from Viking employees who met us at the Copenhagen Airport when we arrived after our long overseas flight. The meals were delicious. The nightly entertainment was top-notch. We enjoyed each of the daily tours in Denmark, Germany, Sweden, and Norway. All of the tours were expertly managed. We enjoyed each one of the ports of call. We learned a great deal through our tours. We enjoyed the two swimming pools and the recreational amenties provided on board the ship. Everyone on the ship made us feel welcome, and they were genuinely interested in making sure that we were enjoying the cruise at all times. We also appreciated the assistance which Viking gave to us at the end of the tour in Bergen, Norway. Viking employees took us to the Airport and helped us deposit our luggage with the SAS personnel. First time cruising with Viking. Won’t be the last. Really enjoyed shore excursions and cruise ship experiences (Spa, Snow grotto, pools and entertainment)! Food was delicious; Manfredi’s was favorite because of its popularity, reservations are required and availability is limited. We visited four countries in seven days. By far, Italy and France were our favorite countries and shore excursions. We enjoyed a Day in Tuscany and Pisa. We enjoyed a wine-lunch with friends on the Canal du Midi and where we had the most free-time, Avignon. We had visited Barcelona earlier this year and enjoyed revisiting our favorite spots in the city for example, the Gothic District, Las Rambla, La Boqueria and something new — Flamenco dance and dinner show. Embarkation and disembark processes were organized, safe, secure and seamless. Every crew member with whom we interfaced was knowledgable, helpful and professional. Many were multi-lingual. Overall, we had a wonderful first taste of Europe and will definitely cruise with Viking again. Read Less

We wanted to go to Norway to look for my husband's roots, and he found this cruise that sounded interesting on a smaller, more elegant ship. Everything was smooth with great service from booking to disembarking; all of the staff were pleasant and helpful, the cabin was comfortable and well-appointed. Food was great with several restaurant choices, but we spent most meals in the delicious and bountiful buffet. We especially loved sitting on our veranda while the ship sailed out of ports and through the beautiful waters of the Norwegian coast. Shore excursions were appropriate to the locations with very good guides and drivers. The optional excursions are relatively high priced, so we did some things on our own. We did a 3-day pre-cruise extension to Iceland which was really enjoyable and a good value. The ship's entertainment was a bit narrowly focused, with good music performers and a fun magician, but would have liked more variety. We were so impressed with Viking that we signed up for a 2021 river cruise while on board! Read Less

Alaska has been on our bucket list for years, and when Viking announced they would be sailing to Alaska we jumped at the opportunity, having experienced a Viking River Cruise in 2014, the Romantic Danube. The Viking Orion had not yet been completed when we made our reservations, so watching her development was exciting. Viking truly has transported the finest of their river cruise ships into their ocean cruise ships, and it felt like coming home when we boarded at Seward. One aspect of the cruise that was attractive to us was the specific itinerary that included more of Alaska than just the fabled Inside Passage. We did the pre-cruise extension in Anchorage, where Viking picked us up at the Anchorage airport and transported us to the Anchorage Hilton for 2 nights, then onward from Anchorage to Seward to join the ship. The weather was not always cooperative and in Seward it was raining and chilly outside, but warm and welcoming onboard. Embarkation was smooth and fast, and the primary downside was the distance we had to walk from the point where we cleared security to the ship itself mostly in the rain. From then on the weather was either cloudy and cool or clouds and sun. Valdez was beautiful, sunny and clear; overcast at Hubbard Glacier and Icy Strait Point and Skagway, sunny and warm at Juneau, mostly sunny at Sitka, cloudy at Ketchikan, and gloriously sunny on arrival at Vancouver. Of the many attributes offered by Viking, having all outside cabins with balconies was a definite plus, the small size was wonderful with just 930 passengers, and perhaps the one consistent comment we heard was how thankful our shipmates were that there were no children (us included). Folks, this is not a party ship, yet it packs in more entertainment options than are possible to sample in the 11 days we had available. We would definitely cruise again with Viking Ocean and River Cruises. Read Less

We chose this cruise, first, for the destination. We have always wanted to visit the British Isles. This cruise allowed us to get a taste of several countries, and multiple cities all in one vacation. We chose Viking because they offered this trip, it also because the value of the cruise was well worth it. It is not the least expensive one out there, but we agree that it is of the best value. Some of the reasons to travel Viking are: no kids under 18, no casinos, no umbrella drinks, no upselling of products in the spa, no additional charges for excursions, no additional charges for specialty restaurants, no nickel and diming with pictures of you with the captain etc. This is an ADULT cruise for those who want to LEARN. Of course we also had a ton of fun, but this is not a party cruise. The ship itself was a floating palace. Beautiful, clean, simple Scandinavian decor, lovely colors mixed with creams, and the lighting was spectacular. Destination artwork and pictures decked the walls and seating areas. Food was amazing. Cleanest public restrooms I’ve ever seen! The entire ship was immaculate. They worked so hard at keeping things clean! Daily tea was served in the Wintergarden complete with loose leaf tea in pots, delicious scones and finger sandwiches. We took advantage of that as much as we could. Service was outstanding. We simply could not have asked for better. Anything we needed or wanted was ours. The destinations were incredible. Excursions were good. Most tour guides were very knowledgeable and helpful, with a few exceptions, but those guides didn’t work directly for Viking, and the ones we were disappointed in, we let Viking know. In addition, there were port talks given in advance to inform you about the port, and any last minute changes that were taking place. And the lectures by the resident historians were not only informative, but entertaining as well! Embarkation and Disembarkation went very smoothly. No troubles at all. I just can’t recommend Viking enough. You will NOT be disappointed! Read Less
