March 31, 2019 on Viking Magni River Cruise Budapest to Passau. First suggestion, do your homework. We booked a French “Balcony” (sliding door) on 3rd Fl. Very small. Just enough room for a double bed. No chairs so reading or TV is lying on bed. Small bathroom. Very efficient but claustrophobic. Room has fridge but only useful for bringing in shore beverages or food. Hint. Don’t upgrade the liquor package. Buy duty free or in town and save $$ as you can bring this on board and no corkage. Fridge is useless otherwise as no room service and cannot bring any bottles from bar into room (even with their best upgraded liquor package!). WiFi is free as it should be because it was terrible. With modern service I’m sure this could be improved if they wanted to but would increase expenses. Service was impeccable from everyone. As were the excursions, even those included. That is the expectation and the standard for this caliber of cruise. The entrees we had were all good but not exceptional. Superb buffet is always in addition to table menu service. Best meal was grilled sea bass served on last day. Meals are mostly served in main dining room with tables of 6-8+. Great opportunity to build friendships and share conversations with fellow travelers. Still good value and a we hope to go again but equipped with new knowledge to fine tune our experience. Read Less

Initially the deal of 2 for was the main reason. Price was good. Itinerary was good. On arrival the reception was faultless and booking in went so well without a hitch, shown to stateroom efficiently. Stateroom was small but it was a river cruise, couldn't be widened. .The staff throughout the whole cruise were magnificent and couldn't have been more helpful.. The meals were tops and if still hungry could have had extra, had wine at meals. All the included tours were topical for the areas we were in. Included was the silver package so better wines and drinks were included and some very nice wines were tasted. More on staff at meals , they got to know your preference and were ready to assist at all times. Loved the whole experience and definitely would travel with Viking again. Unfortunately the weather was overcast most of the time but was not cold and air conditioning in the ship was good so could walk around inside in shirt and go outside for short time with shirt but not a long time. Locks were amazing for the first dozen but after that you ignored them or they were at night and all you saw was a brick wall beside your room. Read Less

We were a group of eight who all had a great time. While we had to change boats at Nuremburg the staff did all they could to make this a seamless transition. Staff were great on both boats and were most welcoming, nothing was too much trouble. In reality, the staff were a major factor in contributing to this excellent trip. The food was 11/10 and we all enjoyed the silver spirits package. A good range of shore excursion with a good insight to the history and people. The majority of tour guides were excellent. A good balance of available free time after shore excursions. The additional excursions which could be purchased were also informative and value for money, especially Nuremberg. From our persective we were not fussed re the folk dancing provided one night, other events were very good. The Tour Director (Martin) did a great job in his evening briefing of the next day's shore excursions and in his overall role as our Tour Director. The only negative (significant issue) was we upgraded to a Veranda Stateroom but on numerous occasions the veranda was of no benefit as we were tied against a wharf, another Viking ship, facing a wall or shore wall and on this basis I would question the value of spending $3,200 to upgrade to a Veranda Stateroom. Other members of our group all had a French balcony on the other side of the boat and had far better views than we did throughout the trip. Only reference to this in literature was "occasional" limited view but from our experience this was certainly greater than occasional. This said, we look forward to taking another Viking cruise. This was our first river cruise. The ships (Magni and Baldur) were excellent, including the staffs. The Danube became too low near Passau, Germany, so we merely switched ships and continued on our way to Amsterdam with hardly a glitch. Staff took our luggage from one ship to the other, and we took a 4 hour bus ride to the second ship, so we got to see some of the country we would have otherwise missed. We even had the same stateroom number. Viking handled this transition extremely well! The port excursions were interesting and well planned. Staterooms were clean and had everything you might need. Meals were terrific; our only issue there was we would have preferred to eat dinner earlier than 7 o'clock. Our concierge made disembarkation easy--arranging taxi service to take us to our hotel in Amsterdam. All in all, if we were to do another river cruise, we would make sure it was with Viking. My family of four sailed out of Basel in December, 2104 on the Viking Magni Rhine Getaway. Positives: New beautiful ship with a sleek and comfortable design; extraordinarily well-designed staterooms that maximize space and efficiency (NOTE: see below note regarding room odor); wonderful captain and terrific tour guides. Negatives: 1.Having taken a Uniworld Seine River cruise two years earlier, I can say that Viking service does not match Uniworld's. If you can afford the price difference, opt for a Uniworld cruise. This was seen most strikingly in the dining room when at times, there was five to ten minute wait to get a fork or a refill on coffee (this may seem minor to some but it's a little frustrating when it happens numerous times.) 2.This lesser quality of service was also reflected in the odor (sewage like) that was often detected on the Main Deck/lowest level. While the front desk staffer curtly and a little rudely brushed off the complaints, we often saw maintenance personnel working outside those same staterooms when the odor was particularly strong. If you're booking a room on the Main Deck on the Magni, avoid those rooms closest to the main stairs. 3. Because of the holidays, our itinerary was a little different than advertised. There was little explanation for the changes or information on the substitute ports. If we hadn't been on a Uniworld cruse, I'd probably would've have given Viking a better review but now I see a definite difference in the level of service. River cruising is a terrific way to travel Europe (awesome for families!) A Viking cruise is still a treat but if money is no object, book a Uniworld trip. Read Less
