We wanted a long cruise where we could truly relax. The 15 day cruise was really great. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on board. We had beautiful weather and the shore excursions were very enjoyable. Our dining experience was very nice. We were well taken care of. The stop in Nuremberg was very moving. The guides were very knowledgeable and accommodating. Our director Marie was lots of fun. She kept us all entertained. The onboard staff operated like a well tuned clock. They anticipated our every need. The front desk helped us arrange a nice bike ride along the river that was very enjoyable. I would recommend this cruise to anyone wanting a relaxed cruise along 3 different rivers. The only thing I would recommend would be the serving of local wines. While we like Argentine Malbec at home in the USA and while traveling in Argentina, we did expect European wines would be served to us at dinner. Read Less

After over 30 'ocean' cruises we were excited to experience our first river cruise. We chose Viking based partly upon their itinerary and partly upon their 'dominance' in the river cruise market. As I sit here after over two weeks aboard, I am sad to report that though there were good times, accentuated by many very devoted crew members, the 'Viking experience' left me sadly disappointed. This disappointment is primarily due to Viking's dominance in the river cruise market (lots of riverboats) and their policy of 'rafting up' while at port to save on docking fees. Let me explain... Viking has over 60 riverboats cruising the rivers of the world primarily in the European market. At any one port you can expect 3 or more Viking riverboats to be docked on any given day. To save on docking fees Viking 'rafts up' (ties their boats side to side) up to three vessels deep. This results in about one foot of space between balconies, thus NO view and NO privacy for 50% or 100% (if you are the middle of three boats) of the cabins. If you are in port for a couple of days this can be very unpleasant. Utilization of the balcony and the view you paid a premium for are gone. This Viking 'experience' isn't much mentioned in the brochure or the photos of the lovely European cities (which you cannot see from your blocked cabin). The resulting 'Viking experience' is more like paying a premium for the lowest price inside cabin. Lights on 24/7 to see or just move about in your cabin. While rafting is not unique to Viking, due to the number of Viking vessels on the rivers and canals of the world (68 and growing, as I understand), you are way more liable to wind up in this unpleasant scenario with them than any other riverboat cruise line. It is for this reason that I would recommend that before booking your next riverboat cruise you should seriously consider any other cruise line than Viking. Read Less

Previous to our river cruise, my husband and I were approached by 2 different couples to go on a Viking Cruise. Because I hadn't retired yet we weren't able to go the 2 different times. Since we had never been on any ocean or river cruise, we didn't know what to expect. The Viking experience set the bar higher for traveling again! Even though we had taken several trips with Trafalgar and one with Globis and thoroughly enjoyed these land trips, we prefer being on the cruise where we didn't have to pack and repack. Plus we were treated like royalty with the extras of the warm wash cloths and canapés when we returned to the ship after an excursion, loved the educational presentations and entertainment of the countries we were traveling to, and eating the ethnic foods of each country. With the 2 different dining rooms,we had so many choices of what kind of meal and food we wanted. We definitely will be doing a Viking Cruise in the future! Read Less

It was recommended by several friends. We were able to go early to have 4 days to explore Budapest on our own which was very enjoyable. The embarkation and disembarkation went very smoothly with the staff handling things very professionally. The ship was outstanding and the staff was superb. We were able to upgrade to a mini suite shortly after we arrived and that cabin was wonderful. Because of river conditions we had to do a split ship where we started out on the Baldur then transferred half way through the cruise to the Magni. We were very anxious about this procedure but the staff and crew handled everything flawlessly! With regard to dining, we have to say we preferred the food and the chef on the Baldur. As for entertainment, activities, excursions, everything was pretty good. My friend and I enjoyed singing along with the piano man. Since our cruise straddled the Fourth of July, we started a sing along with many cruise companions who were in the lounge. FUN!! Regarding the excursions, as is common, some of our guides were excellent and a couple were just OK. Having done more than a dozen ocean cruises we enjoyed the lack of the hurly burly that is sometimes associated with them. The service was top notch and we appreciated the assistance of our cabin steward and everyone on the ship. Our Cruise Director, Mathias, was especially good and very knowledgeable about all our stops and scenes along the way. The concierge and her assistant were wonderful. While we were in Austria they made arrangements for my husband and me to hire a car to drive to my ancestral village not far from Vienna. That was a moving experience to see from where my great-grandparents emigrated. They also made my birthday and our anniversary celebration a time to remember. Would we go again? You bet we would!! A river cruise is such a different experience from an ocean cruise on a huge ship. It is so relaxing and tranquil and we weren't ready for the trip to end. Read Less

Several couples were talking and came up with the idea of a river cruise in Europe. Viking was the preferred line and proved to be the best. A true 5 Star Hotel & Restaurant rolled into one that moved from Budapest to Amsterdam with plenty of sights & side trips to entertain and keep us in awe. This was a trip that gave us the most bang for our bucks... and truly relaxing. The shore excursions were planned to allow flexibility with a standard tour or to branch out and explore on our own. As with any cruise, enjoyment is enhanced with an energetic cruise director & concierge... This boat had both. The crew was extremely helpful & attentive to our needs, both the 'boat' crew and the 'restaurant' staff. The meals that were served could not have been better. The palate never lacked for experiencing tasty and tempting creations from our head chef. The overall amenities of the boat itself added to the relaxing atmosphere and enjoyment of our group. Chose this cruise because it is a small ship. We like the small ships as they are more customer friendly. We had not been on this one before. This was our first time on Viking and we will go again. Everyone, entertainment (Stein), ships crew were very nice and friendly. The food was excellent and the chef came around almost every dinner time to see how we were doing and if the food was fine. We even took a tour of the kitchen and could ask any question about the service or if we wanted any special food. We explored every town the ship docked at and our guides were always very helpful. There was some sort of entertainment every night whether it was the crew or someone or group coming on board the ship. Our cabin was always kept clean. We were notified along the route when ever there was something interesting that we were going to be going by. I can not say enough about the friendliness and courtesy of everyone on this ship. We had heard Viking was very good to cruise with. It met and exceeded our expectations. We have cruised on the Princess, Norwegian, an now the Viking, it far exceeded any of the others. The crew when acting as a guide were far superior to any guides we have ever had. The evening talks on what was the next day served as an excellent spring board for the next day activities. The entertainment at night at the local ports was often far superior to what we had seen on large ships. The intimacy of the small tables and excellent cuisine with outstanding service allowed to make multiple friends each new day. Our steward quickly understood our quirks and habits, making our room even more habitual. We never woke once during the night as the ship moved. We have already purchased a second cruise for our 50th in March 2017 to France because of the outstanding Viking service provided, especially the spacious rooms and now look forward to having another delightful week with Viking.
