This trip was with 8 of our closest friends and THAT made it very special to us. We generally travel alone, but this time we took along friends. We all spent 2 extra days in our arrival city, Basel, Switzerland. Most of us took a side trip to the Swiss Alps which were covered in snow and the sights were fantastic. I highly recommend you ask your Viking rep about this trip to Lucerne if you have the time. Our embarkation and debarkation went very well. No complaints about that part and they took care of all the luggage from the hotel to the ship, and since most of us also extended for 2 more days at our ending city - Amsterdam - all our luggage was taken from the ship to that hotel as well. Very nice. The ship is very nice. Smaller than the regular cruise liners, but that makes it special. I believe there were only about 190 folks on our ship. We got the balcony cabin even though it was December, but that extra room was nice. Some of the did not get this room type and said their room was much smaller. As for the dining, fantastic. The food is very good and lots of it. Breakfast was either buffet or order from the menu. Dinners were multi-course and always several options to choose from. Wine or soda if you didn't drink wine was always included with all meals. Many of the lunches we were out on an excursion or in town enjoying the local cuisine and visiting the Christmas Market. My only complaint about the dining was that they didn't do reservations. There were two large groups on the ship, but only one table setup that would hold 10 folks. There was some "territory" issues the first couple days, but in the end, our group did get the larger table. I can't say that I was a fan of the entertainment on board the ship in the evenings. Usually it was a gentleman playing piano and singing. We did not usually stay to listen to him. Dinners were late - started at 7PM, and with our larger group lasted a while, so usually we just went back to our cabin after dinner. I can say that the included excursions for each port city were very nice. They were mostly walking tours so if you have difficulty walking, some of them may have been a little hard to do. What I really liked was that they were all early in the morning and were usually done by the time the markets opened, so we had plenty of time to walk through them. This gave my husband the opportunity to hear the history and me the time to spend in the markets, nice! We did do a couple extra excursions at an extra cost and they were also very nice. The service on board was also very good. The room stewards had the rooms cleaned up most days before you got back from breakfast and turned down by the time you were done with dinner. The waiters were exceptional and stayed with one area, so by the time the cruise was done, we all knew each other quite well. Our weather was not the best - very rainy. However, due to this rain, our cruise was the first one this year that was able to sail all the way up the Rhine River and NOT have to switch boats as we thought we might have at the start of the trip. THAT was VERY nice!! Of course after we made it through the lower part of the river, would have been nice to have a couple sunny days. We made out though. The only bad thing about the rain was the day we were at Kinderdijk. This was were the windmills were, but it was raining so bad and very windy that most of our group opt'd not to venture out and those that did came back early. Only one couple in our group was brave enough to stay the whole time and they were completely soaked by the time they returned to the ship. Would I go again? I would defiantly do a Viking cruise again if I were to take another river cruise. We have done the Danube (different cruise vendor) and now the Rhine, so if I decide to do another area that Viking cruises to, definitely. The break on the airfare was nice too. Most of us upgraded to Economy Plus which helped with the long flight from the states to Switzerland. Read Less

I chose this cruise when recommended by another family member. Included excursions made it easy to see the highlights of the cities visited. I would have like to see more entertainment available especially at night. It was fitted for a more mature crowd. Our group was ages 55-65 but we still like to be active after dinner. No lights on the shuffleboard for nighttime playing was a damper to the fun we were having. The food was good. Many, many choices. Staff were excellent and friendly. We were definitely dotted on! Transportation to and from ports and excursions was top of the class. Post and pre excursions were magnificent! Don't pass those opportunities to spend a few days before and after disembarking as this only added pleasure to our vacations! Airline transportation was very bad (American Airlines)! Delayed departure, food was horrible and as well as the choice of movies. The plane's drop down seat trays we're filthy. On board staff were below standards of friendliness. When flying overseas I prefer to have my own television with choices of movies/music/television shows. The movies were very juvenile which made the flight seem even longer. Read Less

Have talked about seeing the Christmas Markets thought this cruise would be a great way to see the Christmas Markets. The "party" started before the ship left Basel and never stopped until we left the ship at the end of the cruise in Amsterdam. The crew was exceptional in every sense. Each crew member was always cheerful and willing to do what ever was necessary to make the trip memorable. The ports and included excursions were outstanding. Every one of the guides on the excursions showed amazing ability to explain what was being seen and why it was important. The mobile transmitters made it so easy to hear and understand the guides without having to be standing as close as possible to the guide. Being able to easily walk from the ship to most of the towns and cities without having to be shuttled was wonderful. Absolutely would do this cruise again, especially the last week before Christmas. When my daughter and I arrived we were pleased with the organization and smoothness of our embarkation with Viking Cruise. Previous reviews and especially the agent we contacted for the Rhine River Cruise offered by Viking Cruises was very helpful and sincere. We trusted his sincerity in the company, believed, and booked. The dinning atmosphere and foods were relaxing and enjoyable. The Alruna shipcrew and Captain made this cruise very memorable and would do again. The timing and cost of this cruise ideally coincided with our travel plans. The crew, especially the staff were helpful and accommodating. All of our added excursions were insightful in understanding the history and culture of this area. If you appreciate World War II; the Audie Murhpy Memorial is a must. Activities and enthusiasm of the Alruna staff and crew was contagious. My family and I would - if time and monies allow - do again. Read Less

We did not stay in Basel before our trip as we were fortunate enough to have relatives in the area so we stayed with them, and visited Biel, Bern, and Gruyuere. We heard on other cruises that this was one of the most scenic cruises ..and they were right. They have made the embarkation and the disembarkation process very smooth and easy One wish that I do have is that you could get more information on your day to day itinerary before you get on your cruise. The cabins are comfortable, the beds are too and if you need a different pillow or a topper for the bed just ask. the bathrooms have more room than bigger cruise lines. The food was great and the on board entertainment and cultural experiences were spot on. We had exceptional cruise director N. Hale very knowledgeable and entertainer extraordinare. Everyone was very helpful and nice, the hotel manger saw to our every need. Be prepared though on this trip there was a lot of walking..not necessarily on the excursions but to and from the ship to get to the buses. But if you needed extra assistance our cruise director went out of his way to try and accommodate you. Even if it was hiring taxis to get you to the buses..for the few who really needed it. Oh! There is also an elevator on board .not a big one but enough for a wheel chair or motorized chair. The wait staff at breakfast and dinner by the second day knew who we were and already knew what we liked wether it was who liked OJ or coffee or tea or water or wine..I find that amazing..the best part for me was I got to celebrate the taste of Germany night on my birthday. I hope this review will help you decide to take one of Viking's Cruises this was our 3rd. You will also notice all the little extras they do for you..be surprised.. Read Less

This was the most amazing and relaxing cruise that I have ever been on. Service is top notch. The crew is wonderful. It exceeded all my expectations. The food was wonderful along with the service that you received at each and every meal. All the staff from the Captain to the deck hands were friendly, kind and courteous. If I could sail with that same crew every time I would. This is by far the best cruise I have ever been on. It is the only line that I want to cruse on from now on. I enjoyed every minute of it. The excursions were nice and very informative. I enjoyed the fact that you were able to get off the boat each day and spend time walking around each of your ports. You could sight-see by yourself or with a tour guide. All the tour guides were extremely knowledgeable. Viking goes out of its way to make you comfortable both while you are on the ship or on an excursion. Read Less

First time river cruisers, our group of six had the best time ever. The staff , the food and the ports of call were amazing. We had always heard Viking was the cruise line we would be treated royally, and we were. The dining experience was delightful and delicious each and every breakfast and dinner. During the day we were able to explore the fascinating sights and pionts of interest. Our loca tour guides were extremely knowledgeable, and yet personable, with stories of interesting historical facts, people and events. We will be planning our next adventure soon. Thanks Viking for a most memorable and enjoyable river cruise. In 2018 it will be off to the Best of France. We were offered some very unique discounts towards our next cruise by purchasing vouchers, which can be used on our next booking. Just as a piece of advise, consider the Silver Package for a delightful assortment of Top Shelf liquors if that suits your taste. It certainly was worth the cost for what I received. Read Less

This cruise was a surprise 'Birthday Cruise' for a friend. 10 friends 'appeared' in the Viking Lounge on the first day and surprised my friend. The Viking crew went out of their way to make this cruise special for all of us. The cruise itself was memorable in every possible way. Cruising up the Rhine is one of the greatest experiences a person can witness. As usual, the meals were outstanding. We did the Lucerne extension which only added more to our unforgettable vacation cruise. I highly recommend Viking to everyone I talk to. This was our 4th cruise with Viking. I wish there were more rivers that their Longships sailed! We would be on them. Hail Viking! We have previously done the Danube cruise, the Windmills and Tulips cruise, and the Elegant Elbe cruise. The first two was fantastic. However, the ship on the Elbe was an older one and too small. That cruise was a disappointment for us - however, Viking still is the best! Read Less
