We went on the discovery 2 in April 2019 from Montego Bay calling at Hondurus, Guatemala, Belize and Costa Maya Mexico. We travelled over the easter period therefore some of the places were quiet. We stayed in a junior suite room 8080 but would not choose this room again. The only problem we faced really was that very morning at 7am we were woken by staff putting out sunbeds which seemed to be just thrown onto the floor, as our room was on the 8th floor, floor below sunbathing deck!! Another problem was the two whirpools that were just full of teenagers (unruly ones) who just seemed to hang around all day doing their holiday romance courting. Despite parents speaking to them odd times/checking up on them they still sat there eating food and having drinks in the whirpool then eventually leaving, several hours later, leaving behind rubbish and cups around the side of the pool. Fantastic staff, fantastic food and fantastic entertainment. Next time maybe chose adult only as can not do with rude, unruly children and parents who don't care what their kids are doing. Read Less

We have not cruised with Tui before and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived onboard. The ship is lovely and the crew is extremely friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The cabin was clean and comfortable with a balcony and the maid service was excellent. We thought the food and service in the dining room was excellent with a good choice and the food in the self service restaurant and other areas was also good. The shows each evening were superb and the show team are very professional, they would all not be out of place on the West End theatres. The entertainment in the Live Room was also really good. There was no need to upgrade the drinks package as there was plenty of choice on the inclusive one with all the usual well know branded drinks available. There is a small gym and sauna which is adequate and the spa is quite good. The shops don’t really have that much choice but I am sure others may disagree. The pool can get quite noisy with all of the sun beds full and the entertainment going on around it. However the covered pool is a much quieter area. So you can choose which you prefer. All in all the whole trip was fabulous and I would certainly sail on this ship again. Read Less

I got on the discovery 2 at Corfu and got of there as well. I was on the ship for a week and the destinations are lovely Santorini and Rhodes have to be my favourite. The cruise is really good the activity's for kids are a climbing wall a mini golf 9 holes 2 swimming pools one inside and one outside also there is a games room called hideout for the children to chill out and play on the Xbox and the football table. The entertainment is fantastic with 4 different venues to choose from and they have a casino. the bars were clean and sold a verity of alcohols from shots to beer to cocktails. the crew are so friendly saying hello and always ready to help really good custom. The sail away party was absolutely fantastic with live performances from DJ Tomas and a band that I cant remember there name and a flag parade to see were parts of the crew come from. definitely arrange with TUI they are stars amazing job Read Less

Spanish Sunsets Cruise : Date of Cruising: 28 May to 4 June 2017 Having cruised previously with Princess, Royal Caribbean and P&O on their larger ships holding 3,500 passengers, we were a little nervous about booking a western Mediterranean cruise with Thompson (now rebranded TUI), on their newly refurbished flagship ‘Discovery 2’. The TUI ship is a lot smaller carrying just 1900 passengers. Obviously, on ‘Discovery 2’ you don’t get the feeling of space as on the bigger ships and there is no ice rink, sports court, flowrider, water slides, large promenades, zip wires, etc … that you get on the larger cruise ships, everything is obviously scaled down, but so is the price. This ‘Discovery 2’ is a ship that was previously owned by Royal Caribbean but sold to TUI who then have rebranded it along with a major refurbishment in May 2017. I was presently surprised by what I saw and experienced and in most areas my expectations were exceeded. The cabin was first class and on a par with the other cruise liners we have sailed with. It was spacious and well equipped and had we had no complaints what so ever. The restaurant where we dined for our evening meals (Gallery 47), was also excellent with a varied menu and delicious food. The service from the restaurant staff was also first class. No complaints from me and I’m a fussy eater. Breakfast and lunch was in the Islands buffet restaurant and again the food was very good. It did get busy at peak times but going slightly earlier or later meant you could always get a table. (Peak time for breakfast was around 9am). Generally the look of the various areas of the ship was good and taking into account that it was a ‘refurbishment’ and not a ‘refit’ a good job had been done. Most importantly there was new carpeting throughout which is important as nothing makes a ship look more ‘tired’ than worn faded carpeting. There was a variety of entertainment around the ship and most was of a reasonable standard and some excellent. The main disappointment were the shows in the main theatre. Although the singers and dancers were very talented, their choice of material was disappointing and song choices could have been a lot stronger. The production and scenery was good and the seating was very, very comfortable, it was just a shame the the material chosen for them to perform was not the best. Also TUI could have done better by having more variety with professional artists being brought onboard to perform that were of a higher calibre than the TUI resident dancers and singers, as good as they were. There was one variation during the week when we had a comedy magician who was OK but not the best. Most of the crew were very courteous and helpful and the room stewards good although they were not as visible and as ‘chatty’ as some on other cruises we’ve been on. There were two pools (both with jacuzzis), one indoor and one outdoor. Both were of good quality and the indoor one was not overcrowded, as was the outdoor one, but that probably wasn’t helped with the week of our cruise being Spring Bank holiday week, and so there was a large number of children onboard. There were plenty of sun beds around the ship and if you looked around you could find a variety of shaded areas. In summary: There is an old saying that ‘you get what you pay for’, and that is certainly true here. You just get the feel that things are just not quite as big, as plush, as roomy and of the same quality as the cruise companies I’ve made mentioned previously, but for what you pay it is good value for money. As you can probably tell, I’d prefer to cruise with Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O etc, but for a cheap one week cruise in the Mediterranean then it’s worth considering if ‘money is not is a little tight’. Having spoken to others that have previously sailed with TUI/Thompson, I think this is a step up for the company and the effort they are putting into raising their image and brand in the cruise market is to be commended. If you’ve booked a cruise on ‘Discovery 2’ then I suspect you’ll enjoy it as long as you don’t expect the same experience as on the larger cruise liners who specialise in this type of holiday. I hope this review has proved useful and if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at glyn.day@ntlworld.com. Cheers, Glyn Read Less

After watching the reviews from those on the Caribean trip we were a little apprehensive, however, we chose the Greek Island trip just a week and to put to rest anyone's doubt about Marella Discovery 2. we have to say disregard the minority negative comments, we've cruised with TUI/Thomson before and if you've been happy with them you'll be happy with Marella, you receive the same courtesy, politeness, and the main thing the smile from the staff, the food everywhere is lovely in 47 and 47deg. three-course ample plateful really tasty, we didn't try any of the other restaurants didn't feel the need but anyone who does why not. The drinks package is excellent, again I don't see why anyone needs to upgrade but that's a personal choice, I drink lager and normally I don't like Fosters but it was great as was The Corona, Budweiser, and The Peroni, but I found I had a liking for a Tequila Sunrise quite often not to mention The Jamesons nightcap, great, I am now in rehab..... The show in the theatre on an evening was very good a different theme every night and the entertainment staff, in general, deserve a mention for the organising and keeping us all informed, there's live music in most bars. Around the pool area, there are quizzes, live music etc. not for everyone so if not for you go one deck higher and you'll find quiet and an abundance of sunbeds and loads of spaces the ship was full and lack of sunbeds was not an issue, the trolly bar visits regularly to save walking a few feet, well stocked. Someone mentioned the noise from engines etc. we always book a low deck inside cabin and pay to chose where, we had 2745 tucked away and quiet, the only thing about an inside cabin is, if there are no lights on they are pitch black day and night so no window to see if it's dawn, not for everyone. There was a cool drinking water distribution point near the lifts on our floor so I presume they're on others so everyone filled there water bottles up there. There were little things on our cruise that cropped up but nothing to spoil it or even worth mentioning, we saw no one drunk, the majority over ate that includes us, met some lovely people. Bon Voyage. Read Less

We chose this cruise because of the itinerary. This was our first cruise with Marella. Our first impression of the ship was good it was clean and easy to move around. Our cabin was an inside cabin, it was clean and a good size. The cabins are cleaned in the morning (if you are lucky) and the bed turned down in the evening. On one occasion our room was not touched until after we had gone for our evening meal! The cafe on deck 9 had a reasonable selection of food which was nice but not outstanding. Breakfast was the same selection each day. We are at the main restaurant on deck 4/5 in the evenings. Again the food was very good but not outstanding. The service in the restaurant was dependent on where you sat. Most evenings our meal took about an hour. The bar staff throughout the ship are friendly they work very hard and sometimes you have to wait for your drink. Mid to late evening it is very hard to get somewhere to sit in any of the inside bars. The shows are very good. The show team did 12 shows during our 14 night cruise so they work very hard. The other 2 nights we had comedians who were also good. On deck 10 there is a mini golf course, it is a bit worse for wear but was very popular. On a few occasions we had to wait for other golfers. It can be used day and night and beats the unused basketball courts you get on a lot of other ships!! There are a lot of sunbeds but not enough on sea days. They allow you to pin your towel to a bed and hog that bed for the rest of the day!! Most of the time half of the sunbeds have towels on them but no body's which is really annoying. A lot of people were pegging their towels to the sunbeds as soon as they got up, so you go to breakfast at 8am and half the sunbeds already have towels pegged to them. So if you are a sunworshiper you need to claim your sunbeds early!!!! Read Less

Having sailed with Thomson on several previous occasions we had no hesitation in booking Discovery 2 for a joint retirement/ birthday treat. Firstly let me state that I have never written a review previously and tend to take them with a piece of cake, I always believe that you make up your own mind, however, I did feel that I needed to comment on this cruise albeit it was our experience and there were probably plenty of passengers who enjoyed their trip. Whilst not wishing to write war and piece I will try to sumise as much as I can. ● Ship is not new but we'll layed out and perfectly adequate. ● Rooms are a decent size with plenty of space, unfortunately our room was under the bar area on deck 3 which meant it was impossible to sleep between 0600 and 0300 due to the staff dragging crates etc across the floor. This was clearly our biggest problem and was not resolved by the staff. Whilst I know you take your chances with a lower deck inside cabin it has never been a problem previously and having spent several thousand pounds on a holiday I expect to be able to sleep at night!! Complaint is on route to TUI. Don't accept cabin 3537 it is not fit for purpose and should not be used for passengers!!! ● Food is average at best, it is unimaginative, repetative and uninspiring. Having sailed with Thomson before this was always one of the highlights for me but not this time, having read many comments about the buffet I can only describe it as a cattle market with passengers struggling to get seats at many times during the day. I have to say that I had no issues with any of the behaviour of my fellow passengers as reported previously. Food and service in the main restaurants was sporadic and I did send food back on a couple of occasions due to it been cold or of a poor quality. ● Staff are generally friendly and hard working although there are not enough of them, this is particularly pertinent in the bar areas where customers waited for unacceptable lengths of time. ● Entertainment is OK, the team work hard and put on some decent performances. Braxi music are bloody brilliant. ● All inclusive package is excellent with a huge choice of beers, wines, spirits and cocktails. ● Reception Staff from our experience were poor, they didn't resolve the problem with our room despite promising to, didn't communicate amongst themselves and the hotel staff which resulted in a very unsavoury situation which I am again taking up with TUI. ● Destinations for the first week ( Cuban Fusion) were good, really enjoyed Cayman Islands, Havana and Mexico, Montego Bay was OK if you went on an organised trip as there is a state of emergency there at the moment. I was disappointed for the second week on Exotic Explorer, whilst I am all for taking in the local culture both Guatemala and Trujillo in Honduras needed an organised trip to get the best from the locations. ● Organised trips were again hit and miss and in my opinion very expensive, there were lots of mutterings from other passengers regarding the quality and price. ● Overall our experience was disappointing, this was probably heavily weighted by our room experience, Will we travel with Marella again well probably not in the near future there were too many little things which left me irritated and frustrated so probably time to give someone else a chance.
