We chose this cruise for the ports of call Discovery 2 was visiting and we have had a wonderful holiday. The entertainment team put on some truly spectacular shows we especially enjoyed the Freddie Mercury show absolutely amazing, also Carl the UK comedian had everyone laughing from the minute he came on stage to the minute he left and what an amazing voice he's got! The cuisine in all the restaurants is excellent, we especially enjoyed the Italian restaurant, our waiters, we're John Vicoy, Gilzen and the lovely Mary Rose, ask to be seated at Mary Rose's section of the restaraunt, I assure you they will add to your dining experience, thank you guy's and Mary Rose, you really made our holiday special and the trio of tiramasui is the best desert I have ever tasted! A mahoosive thank you to each and every crew member for making our holiday so wonderful. We will be back! Carol and Robert Parkes Read Less

Chose this cruise due to the ports of call. Flight out from Manchester smooth, excellent onboard service and check in at Montego Bay was efficient.I knew the ship having previously travelled on her when in Royal Caribbean brand, but transformation was great. We had an inside cabin and was suffucient for our needs as only in room to shower and change, room kept clean by excellent cabin steward. Dining-- we are early risers so we ate breakfast at the buffet in Islands restaurant, plenty of variety of food and very tasty, we also went to the same restaurant for buffet lunch, excellent choices and never had a problem finding something to eat.Had evening meals in 47 restaurant with waiter service, couldnt fault the menus, evening meals excellent choices and our waiters were superb, nothing too much trouble. Now the entertainment, this was our 20th cruise having been with Royal Caribbean, Celebrity and P&O, the entertainment team onboard Marella Discovery 2 were by far the most professional group we have ever seen, so energetic, it made the cruise so special as we like the shows in the evening but this team were in a different league from previous cruises,Thanks for your hard work We visited Jamaica, Grand Cayman,Cuba,Belize,Costa Maya, Cozumel, Guatemala and Honduras. We only did 2 tours, Cuba in an old vintage car, pink Pontiac and was great fun, booked before we left with independent company at half the price. We also did the catamaran and snorkel in Roatan,Honduras, this was through ship and was excellent value. Cozumel lots of shops,Costa maya has a purpose built cruise area and this was fantastic as you could watch the dolphin show, free unless you wanted to swim with them, lots of shopping and even pool bars to swim in. Staff onboard Marella Discovery 2 were always smiling, service was excellent throughout the ship, nothing was too much trouble. I would have no hesitation in going on this cruise again, Marella excelled my expectations Just made extra special by all the shows in the evening, this for me was the highlight of our cruise, cant compliment the evening entertainment team enough. Return flight and check in once again smooth and efficient Read Less

The crews were outstanding. Food and drinks were delicious and non-stop. I still keep hearing the bell and Mr Spread the love. I met many interesting people. We had great times at Jamaica, Honduras, Guatemala, Belize and Mexico. I highly recommend this cruise for the perfect sized ship and outstanding crew. It was a peaceful and very enjoyable experience. Where do u start? While searching for a first cruise for my husband and I , I stumbled on marella discovery 2 through Sunwing. We choose Marella mostly because of price point .. all inclusive and the ports for pride of panama. Everything lived up to our expectations, had a balcony room mid ship and was great, I loved the tea kettle in room instead of the usual coffee pot! Lots of tea bags, coffee, milk and sugar. We had tea and coffee every morning on the balcony. The food was good never had anything we didn’t like. ( well except for black pudding) I will leave that for the brits. Buffet had something for everyone. The snack shack was my favourite I like the fast food . I had the fish and chips everyday, so good! My husband loved the chicken wings and the burgers. STAFF.. ALL AMAZING!! Never waited for drinks long , served fast everywhere and all so friendly. I work in bar/ restaurant industry so I recognize good service when I see it! I know when they are busy and what drinks are a little more time consuming. I’ve been to many resorts and the staff are great.. but guess what they are they way because they want you to tip them. The staff on Marella are not being nice for that reason, as tips are included. They just like their jobs! I would Seriously say the staff on marella discovery 2 are the best I’ve seen. ENTERTAINMENT.. AWESOME .. this team works so hard to entertain the audience. They are all so talented and we enjoyed the shows so much. I really hope sunwing remains offering this package to us Canadians , we will definitely do another cruise with Marella. Oh and we did really enjoy meeting so many great people. So nice haveing a drink talking and learning about each other’s countries.made for some very interesting conversations. I could go on and on about our trip! We chose this cruise for two things , first that it covered Christmas and New year, secondly it was going to Cuba. Flight from Gatwick to Montego Bay was good no problems , arrival was chaotic , wrong forms for immigration given out so had to fill new ones while standing in a long line. Embarkation at port no problem. Cabin allocated was on deck 2 with a large window. Good size with a sofa lots of storage space, good size bathroom with a shower , just shower gel and soap in there. Lots of hangers in wardrobe and able to hold full length evening dresses so no creases. good size safe , though this one need ed you to use a credit card to open and close it which meant you had to keep card out at all times. Kettle and tea and coffee provided also carafe which meant you could fill this at water stations near lifts meaning that you did not have to buy water. Water is not included in the all inclusive product but is if you upgrade to premium at an extra 99 pounds per person per week. we did not do this as the normal package was adequate. Ate in main dining room for most breakfasts and dinner, food at night was a bit boring, steaks when offered were not good, best steak was on last night. short on vegetables Could do better. Gallery 47 (italian) was good but service hit and miss. Glass house tapas good , pizza good, service again hit and miss also a lot of vibration here. Buffet ok but hate looking for a table only had a couple of lunches here and 1 dinner. Snack shack good for quick breakfast and lunch. used Veranda on deck 9 most days as had comfortable sunbeams (adult only) nice and quiet. Noisy round pool . Indoor pool area good but a bit stuffy on a hot day. Entertainment was the best a different show every night with very good performers . Venue had a good variety of acts with 4 actor staff all good , Katie, Jenny,Josh and Adam kept us amused every night . Live bands every night in different places plus piano players, guitarists etc all good. Staff in bars excellent especially Boris and Dejen who looked after us on the Veranda deck Information desk staff were not the best could do with more training they did not know their product , learned more from other passengers. Destination desk handed out maps of ports which were useless had to wait to get off ship to find out more. Felt that they did not want us to know more so that we booked tours through the ship. Do not book and pay for internet as its not good and expensive for what you get. Most ports have a bar etc with wifi etc. We missed Havana completely as there was a storm and ship not allowed to dock . If we had managed to get into port Havana was under 4 feet of water and we may not have got out again. Costa Maya was excellent pool, bars , shops etc all at dock Dolphins Flamingos to watch for free. Guatemala was one of the best ports , we took a local river tour for 40 Dollars fantastic experience , good guide (Herman) Roatan , again problems so did not go into Mahogany bay instead went into old port took taxi to West bay , spent day at beach @ 20 dollars each to include beds , umbrellas and wifi good value. Belize , went to St Johns cathedral as had been before and wanted to revisit, also Governers house which was still not open to public, was not 12 years ago either. Cozumel just wandered the seafront Ochios Rios spent day at beach as had been before. Montego Beach shade on ship had been before. Over all do not think we will visit this side of the caribbean again. Would go on Discovery 2 again if price and Itinerary ok Read Less

Heard from friends of Marella Discovery 2, especially the ' all inclusive' feature. My wife and I have done 8 cruises before and we were impressed with the service, the politeness of the whole crew of Marella Discovery 2. Never seen in any of the ships before the amount of drinks ( free ) available on that ship ... Anywhere on any floor you are greeted with carts of drinks. On the deck, almost every 15-20 minutes, you are approached by servers with always a smile on their face to offer you with drinks. Service is impeccable anywhere on the ship , in any department. Very clean ship. Entertainment was out of this world . Food ... no need for reservation in ' fine dining'. First come first. The only area which , I believe , needs improvement is the buffet . Breakfast is the same every day . If Marella improves in area of food , I won't hesitate to give the ship a 10/10. As it stands I give it a 9. Read Less

Wanted to visit Havana and limited in choice as not a fan of MSC. Liked the Tui dreamliner flights in premium economy. Pleasantly surprised at how good the condition of this older ship was. Great staff and cruise director made it very relaxed . Food was very good and drink package covered most tastes. Only £50 to upgrade if you want top brands. Would definitely book with Tui again as good value for money compared to most of American owned ships . The evening shows were the best on any ship and geared towards a uk audience. Cabins were fine if a bit dated but the dining areas are very good with excellent service throughout. We ate at the 2 specialty restaurants and surf and turf was particularly good. Gym ,steam and sauna are all included You get your cases picked up outside the cabin on the last night ,delivered to the airport and checked through to your destination, great service with all tips included. Our reason for booking this Tui cruise was that we booked late and needed a disabled cabin, Tui were the only cruise line that could accommodate this at such short notice. We are not “seasoned” cruisers, this was only our fourth cruise in total and we have only sailed with P&O previously. We were nervous reading the reviews but have to say from the outset that we did enjoy our seven nights on Marella Discovery. I will try to make this review as fair and informative as I can. There are positives in that the ship was very clean, the staff (though mainly young and in lots of cases a bit inexperienced) were polite, friendly and very helpful. Discovery 2 isn’t massively impressive from the outside but the pretty atrium and public rooms on board are comfortably furnished and very welcoming and the vibe in the atrium bar is just lovely. I’m not sure whether this is down to the staff or the clientele but the atmosphere is very pleasant and relaxed. We met some lovely people on this cruise and didn’t find the snobby element you can sometimes encounter elsewhere. I need to say here that level 4 on the ship is the main “entertainment” area accommodating the theatre, a live-lounge (the clue’s in the name), a casino, the very popular atrium bar and the main dining room - BUT THERE ARE NO PUBLIC TOILETS ON THIS LEVEL!! You have to either go up one floor or down one floor to find a loo. Now this is fine if you, like me, are able bodied and can easily manage the double staircases (about 20 steps) to each level but, if you have to wait for a lift, it’s really unacceptable. This wouldn’t only affect the age demographic on this adult only cruise - I wouldn’t like to be travelling with children who, in my experience, nearly always decide they are desperately in need the loo when they sit down to eat. This really is my biggest niggle with Marella Discovery 2. As for eating, we personally used the main dining room, the Italian dining area, the Island buffet and the Snack Shack. The food in all dining rooms varied from perfectly acceptable to fairly good; there was lots of choice and you’d have to be a very fussy eater not to find something you’d like, however, we felt the dining room cuisine was not as good a standard as we have experienced on P&O. The temperature of the food served (on BOTH cruise lines we have travelled with) is never hot enough for British palates - we like hot food to be piping hot and this is something we rarely find in Mediterranean countries. Service in the main dining room can be a bit slow but we felt this could be improved either by better supervision, giving the staff more training or taking on more experienced waiting staff. That being said, the waiters/waitresses were all friendly and helpful. We were a bit worried about the “all inclusive” aspect of the cruise (which was adult only on our trip) and wondered whether people would be drunk by lunchtime. Again, we needn’t have worried, we didn’t see anyone taking undue advantage and going mad with the all inclusive drinks package. As for service of drinks, this was excellent with waiters/waitresses patrolling the pool area most of the day and checking whether you wanted anything from the bar and the same in the lounges in the evening. Drinks were served quickly and measures are European so more generous than in UK. We were asked if we wanted to upgrade to the premier drinks package but this really isn’t necessary and, though I’ve read in other reviews that people were pressured into purchasing the upgrade, we were not and we didn’t see anyone else being given the hard sell either. Our cabin was spacious, clean and comfortable. My only complaint was that drawer space was extremely limited. In an extra large, double cabin we had a wardrobe with plenty of hangers and only three very small drawers (I’m talking about 12” wide) built into a very small dressing table, though there was lots of space for a reasonable sized set of drawers. We do like the formality of P&O cruises (probably because that’s what we’re used to) and I wasn’t sure how we’d go on with a less formal approach. It’s a case of almost anything goes but most people seem to dress smart/casual. I didn’t take any “evening” dresses - I think I’d have felt a bit too “showy” if I had. Several men wore dinner jackets and a few of the ladies did wear evening dresses on the “Dress to Impress” night (equivalent of the Captain’s formal nights on other lines) but, in the main, most guests were smart but less formal. (Some men in lounge suits, some in shirts, ties and smart trousers and others in open neck shirts with smart, casual trousers; ladies in anything from long or short summer dresses, jumpsuits, and smart pants and tops). We didn’t see anyone looking scruffy in the dining rooms in the evening and found the less formal approach very refreshing. The shows we saw (4 in total) were all very professional and your enjoyment of these will really depend on your own taste. The theatre is very comfortable and drinks are not only served there by waiting staff but you can also pick up a drink from the makeshift bar outside each performance in your way in but soft drinks were not available outside the theatre. Poolside entertainment was limited but we didn’t mind that and it may be different in summer months or on family cruises. (To be fair, we only had one sea day and the weather wasn’t conducive to sitting by the pool (November) so we didn’t get to find out whether there’s a bigger range of “entertainment” on sea days). There were quizzes by the pool during the day and you could take part or not, as you wish. On the strength of this experience we have booked to cruise with Tui again later in 2019 - having checked that there are loos close to the main entertainment and restaurant areas first. Read Less

Probably the biggest disappointment was the food. The buffet restaurant seems to have no dress code and the food was absolutely appalling. Cheap, mass produced rubbish. The a la carte restaurants (47° and gallery 47) were slightly better but the food was all bought in and heated up, menus lacked imagination and the quality was average at best. We did have one good meal by paying £46 to upgrade to the Kora La Asian restaurant. This was almost 5 star but not quite. The ship has been with TUI Marella since 2017, before this it was Legend of the Seas and on exchange was supposed to have had millions spent on it. Apart from a nice external paint job it's difficult to see what this could have been spent on as it's all very tired and often quite tatty internally. The cabin has it's own section within this review. The entertainment was quite reasonable. The band 4Tunes are good and some of the shows were ok, though not fantastic. Why are cruise ships obsessed with Broadway shows? On good quality 5 star holidays we are used to entertainment that typifies the culture and music of the area being visited. The all inclusive drinks are ok but I don't understand why this doesn't include the cabin mini bar. Maybe the type of 5 star all inclusive holidays we are used to has set our expectations a bit high for large cruise ships due to the mixed client demographic. We certainly wouldn't sail with Marella again. Read Less

Aegean Shores – TUI Marella Discovery 2 (7 day cruise) This was our second TUI cruise and overall it was enjoyable and due to the ports of call. Booking I booked through the TUI offices in West Lothian and spoke to a lady called Lynne. She was absolutely fabulous and I can’t thank her enough for her time and assistance. Flights and Transfers The flights were on time and the in-flight service was excellent. My only issue is that once checked in we then had to collect our cases on arrival and haul them to coaches. Previously, once we’d checked in, the next time we saw our cases was outside our cabin door. Cabin Our cabin was spacious and I only have praise for housekeeping staff, Irinya who serviced our cabin on a daily basis and was excellent. Food We ate almost exclusively in the 47° restaurant for breakfast, dinner and the occasional lunch. The waiter service was friendly and efficient. Sometimes we had to wait for a table but never longer than 20 minutes. The food was varied and of good quality. Unfortunately the food elsewhere on board was not so good. Snack Shack – This busy pool side food area serves chips, battered fish and chicken wings, all day EVERY DAY! This became very monotonous which was frustrating and disappointing. Also the sandwiches were wrapped in a paper bag and had minimum fillings of very poor quality. The salads came in a flimsy cardboard container that fell apart once you picked it up and the salad was 80% lettuce. The Glass House – Only visited this once and that was enough. Very poor selection of food available which was hidden behind glass counters, very poor quality and variety. The Islands – Busy self-service restaurant, only visited this for afternoon tea. Again very disappointed in the quality and variety of food offered here. Sandwiches made with thick sliced bread and minimum fillings. Selection of cakes (if you could call them cakes) was of very poor quality and the only hot choice on EVERY DAY was sausage roll! With the exception of the 47° restaurant the food on offer was of poor quality and cheap! Drinks It is an all-inclusive package so most drinks are included in the price. My only issues with this are: * Unless you pay an extra £50 bottled water is chargeable * When ordering drinks if you don’t specify the brand name of the alcohol you want you get served the cheap rubbish! * The bar staff were very thin on the ground and on occasions you had to wait some considerable time to get served. And the bar staff had trouble keeping a check of who was next to being served and on occasions just wandered off. * The cocktails were very disappointing, the bar staff simply threw them together so each time you had one they tasted different. Also the glasses were never decorated or accompanied with fruit that you would expect to be part of the cocktail experience – again very disappointing. Entertainment This was the most disappointing aspect of the cruise, with the exception of the Broadway Show Lounge. Elsewhere on the ship the entertainment was shabby, boring and a holiday camp could have provided a better standard. There were 3 grand pianos on board, one in the 47° restaurant, the Atrium and the Live Room. The only piano played was in the Live Room. So no background pianist during dinner or in the Atrium, despite the fact a pianist was on board. In fact on one occasion two of the entertainment staff were holding an evening dance class in the Atrium bar and the music came from a laptop placed ON TOP of the piano! It seems more common that the Atrium is used for entertainment when a pianist playing music or taking requests would have been more than sufficient and relaxing. On the last night the entertainment staff gave a farewell musical event in the Atrium bar, they were all casually dressed, un co-ordinated and singing to a backing track which was very amateurish, uninspiring and cheesy. The opera singer was superb but singing Time to Say Goodbye on the last night was a cringe-fest. On the day of departure many of us had late flights but had to vacate our cabins by 08.30. As a result passengers were sat in the Atrium and other bars killing time and milling around. During the whole day no entertainment was provided and the shops were shut. Passengers sat around as if they were in an airport departure lounge or doctors surgery, very disappointing. Clearly an example of key staff assigned other duties and a possible reflection of how understaffed the ship was. Excursions The excursions were more expensive than our last cruise and we only booked two as a result. The Athens excursion cost £65pp. We set off about 9am and were back on the ship by 1pm. During this time we spent just over an hour at the Acropolis, the rest of the time was spent on the bus with places of interest pointed out to us as we drove past. This was by no means value for money and I certainly would not recommend this excursion to anyone. Although our guide was excellent and well informed and her capabilities not a result if any input from Marella. The bicycle ride in Crete cost £36pp. On our last cruise we took a bicycle excursion in Ibiza which we thoroughly enjoyed. They are not cheap but as we enjoyed the bike ride we booked again in Crete expecting similar. I have to say that the staff in charge of the bike excursion were fantastic (Sophie & George) and I have no complaints about them, however I do feel disappointed with the excursion. My complaint centres the duration and time spent actually cycling. Within 20 minutes of starting we had a 45 minute stop in Heraklion, which was fine. We then cycled for approx. 30-40 mins to some obscure beach and spent about 11/2 hours there. We then headed back to the ship and arrived approx. 2pm. All in all very disappointing due to short duration and minimum time actually cycling! Summary Aspects of the cruise were enjoyable and met our expectations but it was crystal clear that TUI were trying to cut costs wherever possible, particularly the standard and quality of food offered, the entertainment and the number of staff. It’s tempting to say that it was a floating holiday camp when, with a little creative thought and small expense, it could be so much more than it was. It has certainly made us think twice about booking again with TUI. Read Less

We chose this cruise because we’ve cruised with thompson’s 8 times and tui teice and wasnted to go on the new ship and try out the new marella company. We boarded the ship with no problems flights and port to ship tranfers were great embarkation process was as usual very quick and efficient. We were diricted to our cabin. Supposed to be standard inside as we always get. When we got there it all went wrong. Cabin 7621 as soon as we walked in we realised the cabin was not normal shape size or orientation to normal inside berths. The double bed is jammed up against the wall so whoever was on the inside had to climb over the other person to get out not good if you both have arthritis! Also no fridge my wife has special prescription eye medication that must be kept chilled so another major problem. Went to reception to complain and was told “sorry ship is full no chance of move or upgrade or any compensation if your not happy contact whoever you booked your cruise with and complain to them when you get home!!!!” we were raging!!!! Eventually after more complaints we got a small fridge that we managed to jam under the dressing table and had to have the chair removed to give us some space. Added to the the air conditioning fan was noisy and freezing cold complains every day they came and banged around a few times but still the same when we left. Other issues. Dining room queues were ridiculas if not in by 7-30 you had to wait with a buzzer in hand till called and when you got in there were loads of empty seats. Obviously a staff shortage issue service is slow expect to spend at least an hour in there for for a 3 course meal of small portions and longer if you want coffee at the end. For years we’ve raced over the legendry thompson entertainment and show teams. Not this time some shows ok others borderline shocking to the point many people walked out. Opera singer benjamin being the exception he is amazing. Finally the ships smoking policy is disgusting they have smoking tables located a mere 2 metres from the opening to the snack shack. The entire starboard side of the pool deck upper deck an life boat deck stinks of tobbaco, vope smoke and stale cigarettes urgghhhh!!!! Finally when we came to disembark all the passegers going on to stay in hotels on. Off we’re kept on board until 13-45 the busses were then also late meaning we didn’t get to our hotel till 15-00 even though it was only on the other side of corfu bay we could see the ship from our hotel room. So disappointed. We were big fans of thompson but now seeking alternative companies as the prices have also gone up but standards sadly have dropped. Discovery 2 used to be called the legend of the seas if it’s allowed to sail like this the mabe the legend has died. Read Less

Timing is important on a cruise ship re dining ....go at peak times and you get what you should have expected ...we planned our days to avoid busy times and found the whole experience to be relaxing. Sunbathed on the balcony ....make sure you get the correct side of the ship for the most benefit of this and beware of the deck 8 cabins forward under the overhang which restricts sun. We read about noise above deck 8 before we went but never experienced any problems. must have been lucky ? The itinerary was great...i loved being in a different port every day almost and we did 3 excursions which were worth doing. Enertainment was exactly what we expected ...decent standard .....cruise ship musicals ....a comedian etc.....surely customers have an idea what its going to be like ....most night the Broadway theatre was pretty full ...dancers and singers were excellent. Individuals and groups playing in different areas of the ship were generally excellent. Disembarkation was smooth ...wait your.turn ...relax on ship ....on the bus ...corfu airport experience ok ...despite the prophets of doom on the ship.....and there were plenty of them.....flight on time ..great. To summarise ....a good relaxing holiday ....nice ship ...staff great ..worth the money . Came back home pleased with the whole experience. Read Less

I got on the discovery 2 at Corfu and got of there as well. I was on the ship for a week and the destinations are lovely Santorini and Rhodes have to be my favourite. The cruise is really good the activity's for kids are a climbing wall a mini golf 9 holes 2 swimming pools one inside and one outside also there is a games room called hideout for the children to chill out and play on the Xbox and the football table. The entertainment is fantastic with 4 different venues to choose from and they have a casino. the bars were clean and sold a verity of alcohols from shots to beer to cocktails. the crew are so friendly saying hello and always ready to help really good custom. The sail away party was absolutely fantastic with live performances from DJ Tomas and a band that I cant remember there name and a flag parade to see were parts of the crew come from. definitely arrange with TUI they are stars amazing job Read Less

We travelled as a family with two children under 14 , on back to back cruises , the Adriatic Explorer and Iconic Islands. The itinery was brilliant including Venice and Santorini which we really wanted , hence choosing TUI on this occasion, having travelled with Royal Caribbean twice and Princess Cruises once before. * SHIP * The Discovery 2 is a great addition to the TUI fleet , and although refurbished is more than enough in quality for any average Brit traveller (as we are) who will not be disappointed. A good looking vessel. * DINING / FOOD * We used the Islands Buffet restaurant , and occasionally the Snack Shack. The food was good quality and varied. * CABIN * We had an outside cabin on level 2. The window was quite large , giving us all a great view of the scenery as we cruised along , well worth the small extra charge from an inside cabin. It was located near the rear of the ship , in a quiet position. We all slept very well indeed. There was enough space for a family , the beds for the kids dropped from the side walls. It was very clean and functional , although some of the furniture was aged with scratched draws. One kept falling off it's runner which was a bit annoying when accerssing things. The safe was spot on (although old), free of charge , accessed using a major credit card for the strip only. Not seen this type before , as I am used to tapping numbers in , but once I got used to it it was fine. I had no problems leaving valuables in there. * ENTERTAINMENT * One word , fantastic ! We went to all the shows in the Broadway Theatre. They were high quality and varied. It was clear a lot of effort had gone in to each performance. We also enjoyed other areas including The Venue , featuring an X factor finalist Andy. This was an unexpected level of quality. What a great singer - shame he didn't win ! The dance couple were amazing. The dance to the 'Bond Theme' left us all speechless. A big thank you to the entertainment team for making our cruise so enjoyable. * SERVICE * The cabin staff and bar staff/waiters were all super polite. Special thanks go to Janette, Alistair, Reymond, Mladen, Jorge and Malcolm - great people ! We had one complaint against a pool attendant who was not polite but unfriendly and confrontational in our opinion. Had this not occurred we would have given the cruise a 5 star rating. The complaint was handled eventually after several attempts thanks to the general manager Malcolm Chapple. TUI need to improve their complaint handling process to prevent unnecessary escalation to this level , and we have given this feedback to them in the hope other cruisers will not be impacted like we were after only a few hours into a 14 day cruise - this spoilt the 'holiday feel' somewhat for a few days. * DRINKS * The all inclusive drinks package is more than enough. Good draught beers/ciders to include John Smiths , Fosters , Strongbow , and bottled to include Becks , Guiness , Corona , Peroni (nice touch TUI) , many cocktails/shorts ,cola ,orange juice and much more. No need to buy the premium package at all in our opinion. * EXCURSIONS * Very very expensive. Recommend 'do it yourself' , haggle with taxi drivers etc as we did. S U M M A R Y A good quality cruise which was very enjoyable , and so nearly a 5 star rating ! Read Less

We went as part of a large family group (6 of us in total), two parents and then two couples in our twenties. My parents mostly go with P&O (10th cruise) however they were really pleasantly surprised. Overall we had a great time. Really good food, bar service was sometimes slow when they were very busy but never more than 5 mins wait. I will say that the Buffet restaurant (Islands), whilst the quality of the food is very good, the place is terribly dated, busy, confusing layout. Awful. We only ate there once, and much preferred the MDR and other restaurants. We tried all the 'pay extra' restaurants (Kora La twice) and have to say they were all really great quality with exceptional service by genuinely nice staff members. The only real negative area was Destination Services. On the first day we went to the excusion presentation in the show lounge and ended up walking out as it was so poor. A guy from Liverpool was 'presenting' - actually just reading from a script. There was no interest, passion, and if I never hear the phrase 'its a realllyyyy lovelyyyyy trip' it'll be too soon. We went on four excursions (already booked before leaving the UK), one of which was terrible, but all were very badly planned - where are your staff to check people onto buses? They were also very rude, not to me personally, but I witnessed on two occasions them being really rude to other passengers. If it was me I'd replace the lot. Gym could do with a refurb, but nice Sauna and Steam room area to use. Overall a great holiday was had by all of us. Read Less

Cabin 6572 Small double cabin with balcony. Smallest cabin we’ve ever experienced on Thomson/tui/marella ships, and one of the most expensive for its size (full price was approx £5700 for 2 weeks) and WITHOUT A FRIDGE for the first time ever which was a huge disappointment especially as it meant the bottled water provided (payable) was luke warm. Limited storage with shoebox size drawers & shallow cupboards. I frequently cruise with a female friend & know both of us would have struggled with lack of storage for 2 weeks. Fortunately my husband travels lightly even with his evening suit & on this occasion we had to make do with what there was. (Skipped the formal suit on our 2nd week as many didn't bother & so many wearing shorts for the formal evening.) Tiny shower/bathroom but spotless - apart from the smell/stench from drains throughout the 2 weeks. Frequent deposits of soot on the balcony which was washed down once a week only. Bed linen, towels etc. frequently changed and room kept tidy by hard working cabin stewards. Noise at night from atrium events/singing/saxophone/jazz music etc. Close to lifts and staircase. Handy usb ports in both bedside lamps for charging iPhone etc. No news channels on cabin TV - advised there was a satellite problem they were “working very hard to address” but 14 days later still no news channels. Reasonable selection of food in the Islands buffet restaurant on Deck 9 though we have noticed cut backs in many areas (cheaper cuts of meat, less choice of fish dishes / cold meats / salad selection / limited selection of cheeses). There’s an omelette station at breakfast where these were made to order. Ran out of chicken at chicken stir fry station…. Continued serving chicken stir fry as just vegetables! 47 Degrees Restaurant breakfast is good & there’s waiter service here although we found the evening meals in 47 rather hit & miss, generally poor/average with very small main meal portions. Paper thin roast beef, couldn’t have been thinner, served as main course. Served custard in a chipped/broken glass. Mostly staff were attentive even though extremely busy and appeared short staffed. Numerous gents admitted wearing shorts & flip flops for evening meals in the main 47 Degrees Restaurants, Surf & Turf Steakhouse restaurant, Kora La, & other speciality restaurants where most diners did make an effort to dress smartly/smart casual. Dress codes blatantly ignored by passengers and unchallenged by staff. Casual dress code is fine in the buffet restaurant. Speciality restaurants - Surf & Turf, Kora La, Hot Stone, etc - all charge various supplements (ranging from approx. £12 to around £29 per person)and were heavily booked throughout our 2 weeks so I would advise anyone considering a special evening meal in any of these to make their reservations as early as possible. Food was very good in these but it does come at a cost on top of what you’ve already paid for your all inclusive holiday. No rushed panic in the morning for sun beds during our time onboard despite some very early rise & reservers, but unfortunately there was the usual hogging of beds. Many reserved beds with towels etc and abandoned them for several hours. There’s a 45 minute rule for unoccupied sun beds whereby towels & personal belongings will be removed but despite timed tickets being issued no action was taken to remove items to free up sun beds that had remained unused for over 3 hours! A covered, warm, adults only indoor pool and sun beds can also be found in the Glasshouse on deck 9, however there were a number of unsupervised children in the “adult only” indoor pool and jacuzzis. The main outdoor seawater pool for cooling off and a leisurely dip also has a shallow area sectioned off for children. Be aware that the main Pool depth is 5’ 6” approx throughout so depending on your height you may not be able to stand or touch the floor of it. Outdoor POOL CLOSED ALL DAY both arrival/departure days during our 2 weeks- so don’t expect to be able to use it at all during theses days. Pool water was keep clean throughout our stay. There are varied daily activities around the ship but most we found uninspiring. Entertainment & events on weekly Arrival/Departure days are extremely limited so if you’re onboard for 2 weeks there’s very little and at times absolutely nothing happening on these days should you remain onboard. All Inclusive drinks - DOES NOT include everything. Premium drinks, premium cocktails etc incur a supplement or you can pay extra to upgrade to a Premium package - this is stipulated in the booking but the majority of people don’t discover this until they’re onboard and wondering why they have to pay extra for drinks. The All Inclusive wine is cheap house wine - again further cut backs. Check drinks & charges at the bars before you order & decide whether or not its worth your while upgrading. Deck/Pool bars ran out of Sauvignon Blanc white wine & didn’t bother replenishing from other bars around the ship. At the Island buffet restaurant, guests can help themselves to Fosters larger, John Smiths, and Strongbow Cider - all available at self serve taps, as well as house white/rose/red wines - again on tap which we felt was a great idea. Docked at an industrial port in Chaina, Crete, not as previously, but did put on shuttle buses which passengers had to pay for. We felt the ship was being docked more frequently at industrial ports and again we believe this is further cost cutting by Marella as no doubt the docking fees are less at these. Never seen the Captain once around the ship but did hear he joined some passengers for their evening dinner. Did spot an occasional senior officer. Repeaters (now TUI smile) meeting - no count nor recognition of how many cruises passengers had completed & now a simple draw for a bottle of fizz. No canapés provided / yet more cut backs??? Clash of suits -v- shorts & flip flops on dress to impress (formal) evening. We felt Discovery 2 was struggling to achieve the fun, friendly, atmosphere that has been synonymous with so many of the Thomson ships over the years, but failing miserably to achieve that of its predecessors. Unspectacular & mostly boring entertainment. A number of other guests we met felt likewise (and had worse comments to make regarding the entertainment onboard but which I don’t feel could be repeated here !!!). The atrium was used far too much as a main venue for jazz, operatic singing, saxophonist, formal dance displays, guitarist/singer. Vocals ranged from rear shattering screeching to hoarse… and if your cabin is located mid ship you’ll hear it all & it can be quite noisy & disruptive. A pre-recorded “virtual” band is used as a filler + main event on a large screen in areas such as The Venue & at the poolside but with the songs & music completely different to & miss-matching the bands mime. Ships bands “Banda Certa” and 4Tunes are good but venue doesn’t do them justice. Rather watch paint dry than listen to an Audience with Martin Daniels - utterly boring and another time filler. Same old, same old, usual stuff for sale in the shops. Theatre Shows were well below Thompson’s usual standard which we’ve previously always found to be excellent - not on this ship though. We witnessed a number of people leave during the shows… Beware the Ships spa free demonstrations which turn out to be a hard pressure sale event to buy their expensive products and services. One young lady was particularly persistent to sell expensive products with an expectation that because you had attended a free talk or consultation, you were bound to make a purchase. Some examples : skin analysis, hair analysis, wrinkle solutions, puffy/dark circle eye treatments, acupuncture, back problems, foot problems etc. to name but a few - all honey traps to buy expensive products or services, however the choice is yours if thats what you want and have lots of cash to splash. Some decks (not all) do have water dispensers located on them - noticeably one is located immediately outside the door to the ladies public toilets on level 3/4. I cant help but contemplate: hygiene / drinking water / public toilets . . . Having cruised many times with Thomson (now Marella) over the past 20 years, our overall feeling is of a downgraded cruise experience with every means possible to extract more money from passengers. There is even a small charity donation automatically added to everyones bill at the end of your cruise. While minimal, it is nevertheless a bit of a liberty especially when this totals several thousands of pounds each week taken automatically from guests although there is of course an option to have it credited back to you account but of course you’d have to queue at reception to have this arranged. Great staff from previous Thomson ships have now been dispersed throughout the most recent additions to the Marella fleet - I wont call them their “new” ships as they are clearly not new - they’ve already been around for quite a while before being acquired by Marella. These experienced staff are key to the success of these ships but they are thin on the ground, with staff shortages and inexperienced staff evident. Bar & restaurant staff in particular appeared to be under pressure with only 1 bar person to serve customers 3 deep at some of the bars and frayed patience being evident as a result of out of turn ordering/serving. Our whole experience on Discovery 2 was quite different from that of previous Thomson cruises and their ships full of character and their more friendly, more personal, experience with their wonderfully friendly staff and great entertainment package. Discovery 2 fell very far short of this. We feel it has lost a lot of what Thomson built up over the years. While appreciating everyone has their own individual expectations, these are our personal findings from our recent 2 weeks cruise on Discovery 2 and unless things improve significantly with Marella, which we sincerely hope they do, we shall probably consider booking elsewhere in future as there are plenty of other cruise lines in this price range to chose from. We’ve had many happy years on the waves and hope that whoever you chose to sail with, that you will enjoy your experience. Read Less

This was our second cruise on Discovery 2 and will be our last. Firstly the positives, check in and getting to ship and cabin was easy and reasonably quick, we did end up sitting in a bus at the cruise terminal for about 30 mins but it was a busy period. The cabin staff are fantastic and can’t do enough for you and the balcony cabin we were given was clean, tidy and exactly what we booked and expected. The ship itself is impressive and has plenty bars, restaurants and social areas, these are generally clean and have attentive staff to look after guests. In my opinion there is a severe lack of seating in the “live and Atrium” bars and these areas fill to capacity very quickly making it near impossible to get a drink at the bars. Bar staff don’t appear to understand queuing and tend to serve those that shout loudest first and this can be frustrating after a long wait. The two main restaurants 47 and Gallery 47 are superb and the food was excellent as are the staff working there, sadly the same can’t be said of “islands” restaurant, the food there is buffet style self service, often look warm and tasted as if it had been prepared a long time earlier. More concerning was seeing people pawing food with hands and not using utensils to put food onto plates, this unhygienic trait really put us off eating there. The crew really try to encourage hand cleanliness and there are hand sterilisation points all over the ship especially in toilets which are used by most but unfortunately not all which on a ship is concerning. Entertainment....World Cup...no thanks but that’s what we got on our day at sea and also in Croatia. Decks 4,9 and 10 social areas were awash with painted football supporters, boozed up and behaving like louts. Verbal abuse, threatening and general intimidation are not what we paid for or expected. I along with 64 others did make our feelings known to front desk staff to no avail. Ports of call were superb and all within easy reach of the ship, the itinerary of the cruise was fantastic for us and allowed us to visit many interesting and beautiful places. In summary, excellent ship, excellent staff, reasonable food, plenty to drink if you don’t mind queuing and fantastic itinerary. Unfortunately Marella let many guests down by allowing football to be shown on every social deck leaving non interested guests no where to go to escape it. Corfu Airport is prehistoric and a disgrace considering how long tourists have visited the island, high time Thompson and other tour operators put pressure on the airport operator to seriously upgrade facilities. I chose this cruise for several reasons. 1. Itinerary, following the Adriatic coast I felt it would be more likely to be a smooth sail and the sea would be calm. ( I am not a good sailor). 2. The stop ports were places I hadn't been to before. This was my first time on a cruise and I traveled as a single woman. I arrived after an early morning flight. The check in was easy, quick photograph taken and given card for boarding in a flash. Everything was so organised and I felt that continued throughout the cruise and included departure at the end. The dining was fabulous, especially the main restaurants, with waiter service for breakfast lunch and dinner. Food was really good and well presented, menu changed every day. Italian on upper level fabulous too. Given a pager at busy times, so just went for a drink until table ready. Sharing a table meant that it was quicker to get a table and a great way to meet new people and chat. Didn't manage the A la Carte restaurants as they were booked up very quickly. The buffet restaurant has lots of choices but can be very busy, only went in there for breakfast and also lunch on first arrival but enjoyed it. I attended a singles meeting on the second day organised by the crew hostess. Lovely new friends made, and in particular one friend, that enabled us to do things together including trips ashore and evenings at different entertainment spots. So much to do and still didn't manage all the entertainment on board. My cabin had a window and a lovely comfy double bed, loved it, and a really good steward, who looked after me and my room. So much to say I could go on and on. The singing from the entertainers was superb. The places and excursions are amazing. I had 3 nights after the cruise at a hotel in Corfu, because as much as I loved it, It can be very tiring and hard on the joints. It was wonderful way to end an incredible holiday. The ship is gorgeous! Read Less

After watching the reviews from those on the Caribean trip we were a little apprehensive, however, we chose the Greek Island trip just a week and to put to rest anyone's doubt about Marella Discovery 2. we have to say disregard the minority negative comments, we've cruised with TUI/Thomson before and if you've been happy with them you'll be happy with Marella, you receive the same courtesy, politeness, and the main thing the smile from the staff, the food everywhere is lovely in 47 and 47deg. three-course ample plateful really tasty, we didn't try any of the other restaurants didn't feel the need but anyone who does why not. The drinks package is excellent, again I don't see why anyone needs to upgrade but that's a personal choice, I drink lager and normally I don't like Fosters but it was great as was The Corona, Budweiser, and The Peroni, but I found I had a liking for a Tequila Sunrise quite often not to mention The Jamesons nightcap, great, I am now in rehab..... The show in the theatre on an evening was very good a different theme every night and the entertainment staff, in general, deserve a mention for the organising and keeping us all informed, there's live music in most bars. Around the pool area, there are quizzes, live music etc. not for everyone so if not for you go one deck higher and you'll find quiet and an abundance of sunbeds and loads of spaces the ship was full and lack of sunbeds was not an issue, the trolly bar visits regularly to save walking a few feet, well stocked. Someone mentioned the noise from engines etc. we always book a low deck inside cabin and pay to chose where, we had 2745 tucked away and quiet, the only thing about an inside cabin is, if there are no lights on they are pitch black day and night so no window to see if it's dawn, not for everyone. There was a cool drinking water distribution point near the lifts on our floor so I presume they're on others so everyone filled there water bottles up there. There were little things on our cruise that cropped up but nothing to spoil it or even worth mentioning, we saw no one drunk, the majority over ate that includes us, met some lovely people. Bon Voyage. Read Less

Chose this cruise as it aligned with our holidays. Loved the atrium in the ship. This was a great focal point, especially to enjoy a few drinks. Deck 9 was always a hive of entertainment, which was great but meant it wasn’t always easy to get a seat in the sun and not ideal for a quiet read. It is a shame the lower decks did not get the sun. All the staff with the exception of those at reception were incredibly helpful and friendly. They couldn’t do enough to help my mother in law who is not very mobile. It was a shame that the itinerary made it difficult for her to disembark. Loved Havana. A unique place full of character. Food was plentiful and well presented. Loved the shows. I love live theatre so always a winner. There were a couple of particularly talented performers who definitely have the potential to go further in their careers! The show team worked relentlessly, with very little free times yet produced some very varied shows of high quality. Personally I loved the Musicals show and Hot Summers Night. However, there was such a variety everyone had something to see during the trip. Read Less

Where do I even begin, This year I was fortunate enough to experience the best holiday imaginable. I booked my holiday through TUI for a two week carirbean cruise on the Marella Discovery 2. This was my first ever cruise and the price and itenary were incredible. The whole holiday was seemless from booking, to flying to arriving to resort to embark the ship. TUI and Marella staff were always on hand to help. We were greeted with the smiliest faces at Montego Bay where we were checked in and directed to board the Cruise. That night we were instructed and reassured on all safety procedures and given a guided tour of the cruiseship to find our bearings whilst our suitcases were delivered to our cabins. Everynight we recieved an entertainment planner for the days entertainment and events as well as an update on the days port, local information, weather for the day, currencys used and things to do. The cruise was all inclusive and having stayed in many 5* all inclusive hotels around the world the food and drink on the cruise may as well have been 10*. The variety, standard, presentaion and flavour were fantastic. There were many retsuarants to use and the only problem i faced was trying not too eat too much or picking where to eat. The staff on the cruise were the best team of staff i have ever come accross on my holidays. Everyone was so warm and friendly and really helped to personalise your holiday and go out of their way to make it special. In the mornings you would have a wake up announcement from Captain Chris and the Cruise Director Martyn who would start you day off with a lovely update on the weather outside, the port, when you could get off the cruise and overall a lovely start to the day. When you go on shore there are so many different things to see and do to experience the fantastic culture and sights. We always booked out excurions through TUI on the cruise and everything we did added value to our holiiday experience and was unique and great for getting out of the country what we wanted to see, do and experience. We never faced any issues with our cabin and never struggled for size. The cabin was cleaned twice a day and two sets of towels also. We were always left chocolates at night and the cleaners were lovely, always said hello when passing in the corridors. TV channels were fab, plenty of films and programmes to choose from and we loved that there were Marella channels to keep you posted with excursions. We always tried to tune into Cruise Director TV to find out whats been on and whats upcoming chilst on board. The pool on the cruise was a great size and perfect way to cool off on a hot carribean day. There was never any issues with sunbeds as there was deck 9 and deck 10 to lay out on. The entertainment team will keep you entertained with poolside games and quizzes as well as laying back to onboard bands and and talented voices to sing poolside. Waiter service aorund the pool was an added bonus as you didnt even have to move to get a drink. The entertainments show team, actor hosts and family hosts really made our holiday. They were all so friendly and always smiling and laughing. The level of enterainment on the Cruise is one of the most professional, talanted and sought after I have ever seen. The entertainment lounge and gameshows venue were always full and you could see from just looking around all of the guests were constantly happy and enjoying as much as us. A big shout out to the whole team and we really hope we get to see you on furture cruises. Your an assest to Marella and TUI and the way you interact and are constanly around your guests socialising and entertaining is incredible. we dont have children but even seeing the childcare team around the pool helping with quizzes and interacting around the cruise was also amazing to see. All of the staff want to inteact with the guests and really go out of their way to make their holiday. The cruise also has a jogging track, a virtual reality room, casino, climbing wall, minigolf, outdoor cinema, nighclub, shops and full spa just to name a few extras. I would 100% recommend a cruise on the Marella Discovery 2 for the best holiday you can ask for. Read Less
