We went on the discovery 2 in April 2019 from Montego Bay calling at Hondurus, Guatemala, Belize and Costa Maya Mexico. We travelled over the easter period therefore some of the places were quiet. We stayed in a junior suite room 8080 but would not choose this room again. The only problem we faced really was that very morning at 7am we were woken by staff putting out sunbeds which seemed to be just thrown onto the floor, as our room was on the 8th floor, floor below sunbathing deck!! Another problem was the two whirpools that were just full of teenagers (unruly ones) who just seemed to hang around all day doing their holiday romance courting. Despite parents speaking to them odd times/checking up on them they still sat there eating food and having drinks in the whirpool then eventually leaving, several hours later, leaving behind rubbish and cups around the side of the pool. Fantastic staff, fantastic food and fantastic entertainment. Next time maybe chose adult only as can not do with rude, unruly children and parents who don't care what their kids are doing. Read Less

We have not cruised with Tui before and we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived onboard. The ship is lovely and the crew is extremely friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble for them. The cabin was clean and comfortable with a balcony and the maid service was excellent. We thought the food and service in the dining room was excellent with a good choice and the food in the self service restaurant and other areas was also good. The shows each evening were superb and the show team are very professional, they would all not be out of place on the West End theatres. The entertainment in the Live Room was also really good. There was no need to upgrade the drinks package as there was plenty of choice on the inclusive one with all the usual well know branded drinks available. There is a small gym and sauna which is adequate and the spa is quite good. The shops don’t really have that much choice but I am sure others may disagree. The pool can get quite noisy with all of the sun beds full and the entertainment going on around it. However the covered pool is a much quieter area. So you can choose which you prefer. All in all the whole trip was fabulous and I would certainly sail on this ship again. Read Less

We chose this cruise for a 60th birthday gift for my wife having never been to the Caribbean before. We were not to be disappointed. A painless flight on the Dreamliner from Glasgow to Barbados saw us straight into a bus and on our way to the ship within minutes of landing. The check in service was speedy and efficient and our luggage arrived very quickly and so the holiday began. The ship was in general very good with hard working staff who tried everything possible to make our holiday a memorable one. Our Captain John Clark was tremendous keeping everyone well informed of sailing times destinations etc and did it all with a fabulous sense of purpose and with great humour. The cabin with balcony 8223 was well furnished and well looked after by our attendant Flavia who on the occassion of my wifes birthday decorated it stylishly for the day. The balloons towel art and birthday sash were fab but the added birthday card from the housekeeping staff was much appreciated. Plenty clean towels linen etc and always a smile and a hello from housekeeping was impressive as we enjoyed ourselves. Dining .. we always ate at the market place (buffet) as we found it easily accessible and plenty of choice everyday. Loved the breakfasts and afternoon cream teas mmm scones and cream were fabulous. Rhea May was a breath of fresh air always a smile and a little chat whilst working tirelessly at her station. Lovely lady. Entertainment was good most nights in the Broadway Lounge with Amy in particular catching our eye with her fantastic voice and enthusiasm during the routines but that said all the staff/team were very good. We found all the entertainers on board very good but after two weeks a little repetetive but thats a small gripe. Comedians were fab with the Harper Brothers fantastic. We did however think that pool deck and other daytime activities a little sparse. Good mix of quizzes throughout the day. The one disappointment was the lack of atrium activity. The staff on explorer were mostly exellent whilst providing us with our experience and would like to give special mention to again Rhea May in the market place, Flavia our cabin attendant and Oscar behind the bar in the Squid and Anchor. Captain John and all his crew are a real credit to Marella for making our holiday a special holiday. Lastly on ports of call and excursions. We enjoyed all the ports but found the price of excursions aboard the ship a little high. If this was addressed by the company many more people would book i am sure. Prices from local operators were much more realistic. Look forward to joining Marella on another cruise in the not too distant future. Thank you all. Only a couple of negatives for me .. the coffee bar not being part of the all inclusive although selected coffee in various bars were and the minibar being not included having to purchase water seems a bit silly. If your all inclusive then surely all is included. Read Less

We've been on at least fifteen cruises with a range of companies including RC, P&O, Celebrity X to name but a few but this was our first cruise on the Marella Dream. We chose this cruise as we wanted a week of mild weather without the need for a ten hour flight to the Caribbean so we opted for the colorful canaries and Morocco leaving on January 5th 2019. I have to stay we were slightly apprehensive having read some of the reviews but we were so pleasantly surprised that I feel the need to write a review, something I rarely do. The ship is spotless, the cabins and storage areas are bigger than what you find in most of the larger ships these days. The food is excellent always hot and varied with a choice of restaurants, there's a variety of enjoyable entertainment, something for everyone really. But what stands out more than anything is the excellent staff, nothing is too much trouble, always friendly and smiling. Yes, the ship is not as big or as glamorous as some of the newer ships these days but that said it lacks in nothing, it's absolutely lovely inside and has a homely feel to it which in itself can make all the difference to your holiday. If you're looking for a very nice relaxing cruise where you'll get excellent value for your money, do consider the Marella Dream, you wont be disappointed! However if you want the whistles and bells that come with the larger new ships and are happy to pay much more for that, the Marella Dream may not be for you, look elsewhere. Read Less

The cruise is really good the activity's for kids are a climbing wall a mini golf 9 holes 2 swimming pools one inside and one outside also there is a games room called hideout for the children to chill out and play on the Xbox and the football table. The entertainment is fantastic with 4 different venues to choose from and they have a casino. the bars were clean and sold a verity of alcohols from shots to beer to cocktails. the crew are so friendly saying hello and always ready to help really good custom. We have just returned from the most fabulous holiday ever with tui Marella explorer. We arrived in palma and embarked on the new to tui ship. Immaculately presented rooms newly refurbished it certainly was more impressive than we had anticipated. We had lots of little gifts pens, notebooks toiletries chocolates etc celebrating its first voyage with tui. Over the years we have been on many Thomson tui holidays so had an ideal what to expect, average food, decent accommodation cheesy entertainment etc. Well that may have been the old Thomson/ tui experience, but after this week we can honestly say they have thrown away the old manual and reinvented themselves with this one and blown away the old tired format of the holiday experience and set the bar so high I don't think other holiday cruises will reach. Food 10 places to eat, five with a supplement and five as part of the all inclusive, it's a Thompson/tui holiday and I had the old expectation of the all in food would be poor and the supplement food would be good, how wrong I was! The all inclusive food in all five places to eat was fabulous, tasty fresh well presented with attentive staff and waiters, clean facilities and very professional chefs, tui have thrown everything into this one and thrown the old way of doing things, dining was a treat wether it was a snack or and sit down table waitered service eating was a pleasure with the all inclusive deal. We did try a meal with the supplemented eateries, the Kora La it was simply fantastic a real treat, but whatever you taste or need they cater for everyone. We in our party had and gluten free and a veggie and they were taken care of no problem. Staff Couldn't do enough for you, your every need was catered for and nothing was too much trouble, faultless in every way. Excursions We went to Pompeii and Herculaneum fabulous day out very informative guide who's knowledge and passion was beyond compare, it made for a fabulous day out Entertainment well, we have been on countless Thomson/Tui holidays and even at five star level, the entertainment was lack lustre, amateurish and cheesy at its best, OH BOY, are you in for a treat, simply put the onboard shows in the broadway lounge were outstanding, the singing, the dancing, the acting, the presentation, the musicality and directorship were second to none, we were a party of six, and we were all blown away by the outstanding performances of all of the shows. Tui have thrown away the old "how to" entertainment book and replaced it with something that's worthy of any west end stage. It sounds OTT but I promise if they keep that level of passion they gave in performing for us you will not be disappointed. The last place you want to have poor entertainment is sailing down the med with nowhere to go! The entertainment in all of the other bars and lounges were fantastic too, there is something for everyone and your musical taste I'm sure, will be catered for. Bad bits It was over in a week, first time ever we didn't want to come home! Overall We had avoided cruises for many years thinking it would be "Butlins in a Boat" how wrong were we? We are looking at next years cruises already!!! Awesome effort by all involve in making everyone's holiday on board extra special and captain peter and staff for making our journey a safe and pleasant one Read Less

We chose this cruise because it gave us some spring sunshine, some reviews seems doubtful however because it was so reasonably priced and available went for it. We were not disappointed in the least. Yes the ship is dated, but it was spotlessly clean, the staff were friendly and could not do enough for you. The shows in the evening and the bar entertainment was superb. The bar prices were very reasonable as we did not have the all inclusive option. The food was plentiful - varied and hot. The shoe excursions were very good and reasonably priced we enjoyed what we did. The cabin was spotless and the cabin steward was very attentive, the cabin cleaned twice daily, towels changed and bed turned back. Cabin no: 5090 was an outside cabin with a large window and very quiet . Have done two other more expensive cruises but would definitely sail again on this ship. The only criticism being the WIFI was expensive and though this should be freely available and the swimming pools were too cold to swim in. There were plenty of sunbeds available. Read Less

Food is available all day. There is entertainment in most of the bars in the evening. We enjoyed "Music Wave" We didn't join the shore excursions. Other passengers enjoyed them. If you want to go to The Botanical Gardens in Funchal we went on a service bus from near the cable car. Number 31 or 31A takes you right outside. It cost just 2 Euros each. We had a taxi back and negotiated 8 Euros The cable car is expensive and we saw long queues. Read Less

This Cruise was chosen by friends who have been on many cruises. We have never been on one so to us it was a whole new experience. From start to finish the experience was brilliant. The highlights were the Restaurant 47 and the other speciality Restaurants. The meals in these are just out of this world and where supplements were paid it was worth every single penny. At 47 we sat at Table 124 numerous times with the Worlds Best Waiter Baskaran. He was out standing and made us come back to the same table 8 times. Fault-less. Wanted to try a cruise as many friends have loved them, took a chance and booked the only one going during my husbands big birthday! Wondered if we had done the right thing afterwards as read some bad reviews and we are quite fussy customers who usually book sheduled airlines and hotels or stay with friends abroad, thought we might have made a massive mistake as got closer to departure date! The airline (Tui's own) not the best, and this was probaby the worst part, as used to KLM or Finnair where you get superb service and free hot food/drinks onboard. Not too impressed with professionalism of stewards, but put up with it and food not that bad, even if you have to pay for it. Embarkation a hit and miss experience at the end of a tiring day (delayed by that awful snow in Edinburgh). Once on the ship however, a different story completely! We were totally blown away by the quality of the service, the food was second to none (compared to best hotels and restaurants we have tried throughout the world),they simply couldn't do enough to help you enjoy your holiday. OK the cabin, although deluxe was not super decor, but it was clean, a good size and had everything it needed. Loved the choice of bars and dined in the wonderful Orion a la carte restaurant each night. Well worth paying for the drinks package as some great bars we really enjoyed each night. The shows not first class like the West End, but to be fair they did very well considering limitations of stage size etc and wouldn't knock their talent or enthuisiam. Will be going back next year to do the same cruise for my big birthday, can't wait. Read Less

We did a 2 week cruise on Marella Discovery visiting many Caribbean islands we had not previously visited on other ships. We were so impressed with this ship with its wonderful friendly staff. It started with the Thomson flight, plenty of legroom, a new aircraft and plenty of food and drink that you could want, it was a really good flight. We have cruised with many other cruise lines but never with Tui, this was our first. From the word go everything was so well organised. We enjoyed the food in all the restaurants. We visited Surf and Turf on two occasions and the food was amazing as was the service too, this restaurant was an added supplement as was Hot Stones and Kora La but the food in all three restaurants was brilliant we had beautiful meals in all three, well worth the supplement. The 47 and Gallery restaurants were very good too, well presented food and good choices. The buffet in Islands was also very good with a good choice of food every day. There was a self service beer and wine area near the entrance to Islands and I was so impressed with how spotlessly clean it was always kept. I commented to the guy who went over and above keeping this area tip top, his name was Stephan and well worth a mention. The quality of the inclusive wines was very good and although we occasionally ordered a bottle of wine it was certainly not on a regular basis. The entertainment was also excellent, although we did not get to every show, we were too tired on a few occasions but the shows we saw were really good. The comedian was really funny and the dancers very professional and top quality entertainment. It was such a happy atmosphere on this ship, like no other we have been on previously. Including P&O, Fred Olsen, Princess and Royal Caribbean, they certainly have got a good product with an excellent team and we will certainly be cruising on this ship again. Danni and Danielle at reception were very professional and went to so much trouble to sort out any queries and problems we had and all the reception staff were brilliant too. I must mention Claudia, social hostess who did such an excellent job hosting various events, so professional and friendly and made everyone feel special. We were a bit unsure about cruising with Tui for the first time but I must say we were extremely satisfied with the whole package, certainly as good as any other line we've cruised with in fact a lot better than most. We have just returned from a fantastic week on the dream, the ship is a grand old white lady . Our room was nice and clean from what I could see but I didn’t go round on my hands and knees like some of the sad critics, as I didn’t have time as we were enjoying our holiday. The food was nice and hot , we ate mainly in the mdr as we like to be waited on and the staff worked really hard to please people. We really liked the entertainment and thought they worked really hard. The ports of call were good as well and having good weather made a big difference. This ship is not as glamorous as the Discovery ships, but we still had a great time and made some new friends. At the end of the day a holiday is what you make it, if you want to go looking for faults then I’m sure you will find some, but that’s not what we went for. We really liked this ship and it’s staff and would definitely go on her again. Ps If people come up to you when you first get on and start moaning then just tell them to do one as this happened to us, sad people. Go and enjoy Read Less

We did the 7 day cruise 8 years ago as a sampler (our first cruise - Thomson Dreams) along with a 7 day beach stay. Decided on 14 days this time (our 6th cruise) Perfect flight and transfer to liner. Upgraded to deluxe cabin (No.230) well worth it. Food and service is top class. Anyone who complains is probably a habitual complainer. However, we did take out the All Inclusive drinks package. Unless you drink like a fish, don't take it. The "house" table wine, (served by the glass) was not only the worst I have ever had on A.I. (16 years all around the world) but you'd have a job to buy anything so bad. Very, very cheap Spanish. The remaining A.I. drinks were ok unless you wanted premium shorts cocktails or bottled beers. (Supplements of £2.50 upwards.) Unlike some other cruises we have been on, the overall price of drinks, beer cocktails, shorts and wine, were very reasonable The other issue was Wi-Fi. £49 for 7 days or £95 for the 14 day cruise. Not only was it ridiculously expensive but it didn't work. I eventually got a full refund after 48 hours. Either get a sim with plenty of data allowance or use the Wi-Fi cafes in each port. The only other small gripe was the charge of £25 for the cabin safe. You can buy a fully electronic small safe for £100 so this charge was a complete rip off. Those things apart, we thoroughly enjoyed the whole cruise. The evening stage show was as good as anything you will see anywhere and there were a couple of performers who should be on B.G.T.! We saw every show ( not my personal scene) for all 14 nights - they were that good! Our cabin boy was excellent, he thoroughly deserved the extra tip we gave him. Return to airport and flight back were perfect. So overall, a great cruise, marred only by a couple of issues which Marella should be able to rectify. Would we go again? YES! Read Less

Spanish Sunsets Cruise : Date of Cruising: 28 May to 4 June 2017 Having cruised previously with Princess, Royal Caribbean and P&O on their larger ships holding 3,500 passengers, we were a little nervous about booking a western Mediterranean cruise with Thompson (now rebranded TUI), on their newly refurbished flagship ‘Discovery 2’. The TUI ship is a lot smaller carrying just 1900 passengers. Obviously, on ‘Discovery 2’ you don’t get the feeling of space as on the bigger ships and there is no ice rink, sports court, flowrider, water slides, large promenades, zip wires, etc … that you get on the larger cruise ships, everything is obviously scaled down, but so is the price. This ‘Discovery 2’ is a ship that was previously owned by Royal Caribbean but sold to TUI who then have rebranded it along with a major refurbishment in May 2017. I was presently surprised by what I saw and experienced and in most areas my expectations were exceeded. The cabin was first class and on a par with the other cruise liners we have sailed with. It was spacious and well equipped and had we had no complaints what so ever. The restaurant where we dined for our evening meals (Gallery 47), was also excellent with a varied menu and delicious food. The service from the restaurant staff was also first class. No complaints from me and I’m a fussy eater. Breakfast and lunch was in the Islands buffet restaurant and again the food was very good. It did get busy at peak times but going slightly earlier or later meant you could always get a table. (Peak time for breakfast was around 9am). Generally the look of the various areas of the ship was good and taking into account that it was a ‘refurbishment’ and not a ‘refit’ a good job had been done. Most importantly there was new carpeting throughout which is important as nothing makes a ship look more ‘tired’ than worn faded carpeting. There was a variety of entertainment around the ship and most was of a reasonable standard and some excellent. The main disappointment were the shows in the main theatre. Although the singers and dancers were very talented, their choice of material was disappointing and song choices could have been a lot stronger. The production and scenery was good and the seating was very, very comfortable, it was just a shame the the material chosen for them to perform was not the best. Also TUI could have done better by having more variety with professional artists being brought onboard to perform that were of a higher calibre than the TUI resident dancers and singers, as good as they were. There was one variation during the week when we had a comedy magician who was OK but not the best. Most of the crew were very courteous and helpful and the room stewards good although they were not as visible and as ‘chatty’ as some on other cruises we’ve been on. There were two pools (both with jacuzzis), one indoor and one outdoor. Both were of good quality and the indoor one was not overcrowded, as was the outdoor one, but that probably wasn’t helped with the week of our cruise being Spring Bank holiday week, and so there was a large number of children onboard. There were plenty of sun beds around the ship and if you looked around you could find a variety of shaded areas. In summary: There is an old saying that ‘you get what you pay for’, and that is certainly true here. You just get the feel that things are just not quite as big, as plush, as roomy and of the same quality as the cruise companies I’ve made mentioned previously, but for what you pay it is good value for money. As you can probably tell, I’d prefer to cruise with Princess, Royal Caribbean, P&O etc, but for a cheap one week cruise in the Mediterranean then it’s worth considering if ‘money is not is a little tight’. Having spoken to others that have previously sailed with TUI/Thompson, I think this is a step up for the company and the effort they are putting into raising their image and brand in the cruise market is to be commended. If you’ve booked a cruise on ‘Discovery 2’ then I suspect you’ll enjoy it as long as you don’t expect the same experience as on the larger cruise liners who specialise in this type of holiday. I hope this review has proved useful and if you have any questions please feel free to e-mail me at glyn.day@ntlworld.com. Cheers, Glyn Read Less

This was our second time cruising and we were celebrating my 60th birthday and our silver wedding anniversary. We flew from Manchester to Malaga and once boarded, we decided to stay and explore the ship and rest up. The ship was very clean, our cabins were cleaned twice daily by very friendly cabin staff who made us feel like it was home from home. The food was plentiful and delicious (I'm sure I gained weight) and we made lots of friends. As part of our celebrations, we were invited to dine at the captains table with other guests, a most enjoyable occasion. We paid extra for a photo shoot, a celebration package, which included flowers, Champaign, basket of fruit and of course a cake. A truly memorable occasion I highly recommend the spa treatment, it was fantastic. Everyone on board made you feel special, however, having requested an outside cabin with a queen size bed, we in fact got two single beds at opposite side of the cabin. We are now taking this up with the travel agency who made the booking. in spite of this, we enjoyed our cruise. Read Less

Couldn't fault this cruise at all. The staff, food and entertainment was exceptional. Ok, the ship maybe a little old but all areas were clean and comfortable, as for the reviews about the vibration, this is minimal and not even worth mentioning. We were independent travellers, so our embarkation was very smooth, taking our own luggage directly to our cabin, we didn't take any shore excursions as we just did our own thing, so unable to comment on these. Watched a couple of shows, but we preferred to sit in Hemingway's on an evening and listen to the music in there which again was excellent. Daytime entertainment was good which we joined in with, trivia quizzes, darts etc Captain John, kept the passengers up to date regarding the weather, position and facts regarding ports of call. Some previous reviewers seem to moan for moaning sake, we had a great time. Read Less

So I like reviews to be short sweet and straight to the point. Here goes we book on a Thompson cruise with a trip on the TUI Discovery. We booked quite late so missed the drinks package. First point of note the day excursions off the ship sell out fast. We tried to book 2 trips both sold out within the first 2 days. The thai restaurant is a must again places went fast its worth the £20 extra. On sea days sadly the british culture of putting your towel out on a sun bed at daft o clock in the morning is still in evidence . To the credit of Thompson the staff were removing towels that had been on beds for more that 1 hour. Our cabin 3056 was very clean thanks Maria nice size window shower was a little tight but good water pressure. We had a great comfy double bed the cabin had plenty storage space for our clothes. The food was of a good standard with in my opinion a good choice in fresh fruit and hot and cold meals. We went to the self service breakfast buffet each day I must say that set me up for the day. The evening meals were a toss up between the Italian restaurant and the Alacarte restaurant The entertainment was ok as I have watched much better on other Thompsons Ships again this is my opinion. I was a little disappointed at the cost of the Thompson day trips a bike ride was £35 each 2 hour trip to train ride cost us £156.00. Would I use Thompson Holidays again yes would I do this itinerary of islands again No Read Less

Embarkation in Montego Bay was fairly smooth and without any problems. Once on board the ship we were shown directly to our outside plus cabin on deck six. The cabin was large clean and well maintained. Our cabin steward was a surprise as he had been our steward on 2 previous cruises. Eating was not a problem - indeed all the eateries served good and plentiful food. The a la carte restaurants are all highly recommended especially Mistrals. The day to day shows, quizzes and live music are of a high quality as are the quiet spots like the library and the card room. Service in general is fine although it can be quite slow in the Medusa Lounge where quite often it is easier to go and get your own drinks. Now the problem - due to weather problems our complete itinerary was reversed meaning we arrived Cozumel 4 days early. This meant there were 9 ships for 8 berths and Thomson being a lot smaller than the multitude of Carnival and Royal Caribbean ships we were the ones to lose out. There was supposedly an attempt to arrange tenders to transfer us to shore but this never happened due to too large a swell at sea - things looked fairly smooth to us - which resulted in an additional day at sea and cancellation of our excursion. Overall this did not spoil our week and yes the ship is a little old but it is spotlessly clean and carries a certain air of regality that is missing in the modern floating behemoths that are the modern cruise liners of today. Don't be put off - Enjoy.................. Read Less

We have been on this ship 5 times, we tried one of there sister ships, although it was very nice, the celebration more than any thing was amazing. With the most helpful staff and with all the amount of customer's they have each year still knew what drinks we had and made a fuss of us, which made us both fill special. The cabins are great and cleaned every day and every 2nd day all linen is changed, towels are changed daily. The restaurant are great, if you want fine dining there is 3 to be visited all food is fantastic. The buffet style restaurant is great along with the burger bar at the rear of the ship. Entertainment is second to none with it's great dancing and singing acts and as there are two sessions you will be able to see some great shows. Ports are great to explore different countries we have been ashore a few times on our own and felt really safe, but if you go on any excursions make sure you have comfy shoes on as some have a lot of walking. Above all we were all inclusive which meant we did not have a bill at the end of trip to pay I would advise any one to go all inclusive as drinks can be quite pricey. I hope anyone who goes with Thomson's enjoys the holiday as much as we did. Read Less
