We mainly chose this cruise because it took us from Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. We were very sceptical of cruising with Costa because of the reviews on this site. However the experience couldn't have been better. Costa Luminosa is a bit smaller than other cruises we have done (MSC) and we enjoyed that. It enabled us to meet more people and make some firm friends who we'll keep in touch with. The only thing lacking was enough pools. On a day at sea you almost had to queue to get a swim! We had a premium balcony cabin which was large and comfortable. We liked having a seperate sofa to sit on when we were resting, and the balcony was a great place to escape to if we wanted a little peace. We always had breakfast and lunch in the buffet, and this is where we met most of our new friends, just by sharing tables. The food was good with lots of choice. My only negative would be that there was far too much salt in all the savoury food, both in the buffet and in the restaurant. The entertainment was a bit hit and miss. There were some grea artists playing the various bars on the ship and we rotated around them most evenings. There were also a handful of amazing shows in the theatre, and a handful of not very amazing shows. But we never lacked entertainment somewhere on this ship. We also enjoyed the guest speaker who gave lectures on the history of the area we were in on days at sea. Service was very good and any reasonable request was delivered promptly and with a smile. We didn't do shore excursions at every stop, but the ones we did do were really good. Great local guides. The only downside was having excursions sharing two languages. It was ok when we understood the other language, eg French or Italian because we got the whole story. Unfortunately other languages left us in the dark when you could tell they had more of the story. Overall a great trip and would certainly travel with Costa again. Read Less

Our ship departed early the morning after boarding allowing us to explore Stockholm before departure. Embarkation and disembarkation were very well organized and went very smoothly. There was no waiting for check-in. We were on board within 10 to 15 minutes of arriving at the port. The ship itself was very well designed. There was never a wait at any of the 3 elevator groups. Moving about the ship was easy, even exiting the theater took no time. The surprise was the food. Dinner consisted of 6 courses; the pastas and risottos were fabulous, the cheeses delicious, and the main courses were primarily fish and Italian specialties such as Osso Bucco, all excellently presented and prepared. Wines offered were adequate. Purchasing a drink package would be strongly recommended. Dinning hours were limited from 7pm to 10pm The coffee and cappuccino on-board, Illy, was as good as I have had anywhere. Read Less

We chose this cruise because due to the location we knew it would be cool weather wise. This was correct..nice and cool.Itenerary was Stockholm/Helsinki/St Petersburg/Talinn/Stockholm.Absolutely loved all the ports except St Peterburg.Would not recommend going there. And if you do my advice is if your there 2 nights as were were only sign up for one day of excusions. Many people had booked both days and wished after the first they had not.You cant get a refund if you book both. Also avoid walking tours in St Petersburg...terribly crowded in summer and street level grim and dangerous w pick pocketing.Be prepared for all the tours in St P to be extremely crowded.Your main concern will be not losing your tour guide. On this cruise the best place to shop is Talinn pricewise. We were very pleased with the Luminosa.Service was great food was good.Biggest complaint which is significant is no free wifi. Its crazy paying extra for wifi and we didnt but our trip would have been easier if we could have. Also wish they would have been better about keeping kids out of the adult pool.Other wise we were happy with our cruise. I’ve finally chosen a cruise with Costa Luminosa after considering the same route, activities onboard, food seletion with other cruise line companies such as Royal Carribean, Norwegian Cruise, Princess Cruise. I selected Costa due to the reasonable price in comparison with Royal Cab and Norwegian (almost 1.5 times more expensive for the same cabin type, same route Stockholm - Helsinki -Tallin - Saint Peterburg), we then booked a balcony cabin with option of upgrading to a high class of cabin for free of charge. Luckily, we ended up in the Suite Balcony cabin which has more space, consists of a mini bar, and larger bathroom. Here are some pros and cons: Pros: The Costa Luminosa is not as big as Royal Oasis of the sea or Norwegian Epic (4-5000 pass), but the reason for me to vote for Costa is because of the Italian design. I love the way italian design the cabin (the toilet and the bathtub are located in the same room which is very convenient. In Norwegian epic, you would have toilet and shower in two seperated areas which is uncomfortable for me). Regarding the food, we have two options: buffet or the restaurant. The buffet is pretty normal and has the same level with other cruise ship. However I feel that the food in the restaurant is more fresh and more european than what we have had in Royal and Norwegian. Perhaps, we are prefer the european food than the american ones. Gala dinners are served well with typical italian food and the performance of italian staffs in the kitchen. Cons: Room is cleaned up everyday. However, the steward never refilled the shampoo and the bodywash, I had to call the room service to ask for that. Comparing to Royal Cab and Norwegian Cruise line, the activities on board in Costa Luminosa is very mediocre. Lack of evening shows, the swimming pool is too small. I did not bother to try one even I have already prepared my swimming suit. Quite a big surprise to me that the ice cream in Costa Luminosa is completely not free whereas it is totally free in other cruise lines. Well, I could mark it as the positive point in the review as I am trying to lose some weights at the moment. The staffs are friendly. However I would prefer to have more diversified community of staffs. In Costa Luminosa, more than 80% of staffs which I saw were Fillipinos even most of the engine staffs. I have no problem or whatsoever with Fillipino staffs as all of them were nice and very helpful. Nonetheless, in other ships, we have a better mix of Roumanies, Hungaries, Brazils,…with the Fillipinos. On the day the ship gets to the port, we have options of taking shuttle bus to the city centre, hop on/off bus (more expensive), or taking the tours which is organised by Costa. I am not very pleased with the information of port that Costa has given us. In many ports, the passengers do not have to take the shuttle bus to get into the city centre. Instead of that, they could have taken the local bus or just walk 10-15 mins. Costa did not supply any city map and did not give any hint to walk/take local bus to city centre. However, I always figure it myself as this is our 5th cruise. Once we get on the port, there is always information desk of the port, go ask them the direction and take the map with you. An alternative way is to ask the Hop on/off staffs, they are usually nice and friendly to guide you to walk to the city even you do not use their service. The ship was cruising on the Baltic sea and passing several scandinavian countries like Denmark, sweden, estonia, finland, and russia. One of the reason I took the cruise in baltic sea is because of Russia. I was so curious to explore and to see the real communist country like Russia after have watched/read so many things about this country in television and books. Saint peterburg is 2nd largest city in Russia. Frankly speaking, the impression of Russia in my mind now is not a very hospitality place. The traffic is bad, and gets worst when it rains. Buildings, bridges, and architecture is old but no way to compare to Paris. If you have enjoyed youself in charming beauty in Paris, then Saint Peterburg is not even close to be in the same league. The pick pocketing is everywhere. All things cost increadibly expensive as the russians want to make money over the tourist. The truth is that Russian economy is suffocating as the rouble (russian money) is felt off 50% its value in the last one year. The whole Russian nation is just based on the oil price. That’s the way how communist politicians run the country. After having heard some many warning regarding the pick pocketing, without any hesistation we took the tour organised by Costa to visit Saint peterburg in two days to visit some churchs, the Hermitage museum, the Neva river,…The Hermitage museum has been exagerated too much. This museum is no way in comparison with Le musee du Louvre in Paris. The atmosphere inside the museum is unbelievably chaotics. There were too many people, hundreds of touristic groups coming from different countries which made the environment event worst. It seems to me that there was no safe way for the foreigners to visit the Hermitage by their own, therefore 90% of the visitors join in the tour. The only positive thing is that you have free wifi in Hermitage. Thanks for that, I was able to go online after 2days because in all other places the russians charge around 2-3$ to use the wifi. My Italian sister-in-law who lives in Italy chose the cruise, as she has only ever cruised on Costa and does not realize that there are many better cruise lines from which to choose. Ship: It compares very poorly with MSC, Princess, Celebrity Or Holland America, our usual choices. 1.There was no water, tea or coffee available other than for purchase at the bar or when the buffet was open. everything that is normally complimentary on other lines required payment. 2. The cabin was large and beautiful, with a balcony. Well furnished 3. Dining was not as good as expected. The menu and food was supposedly designed and supervised by a well known Italian chef. It did not live up to expectations. Loin lamb chops were overcooked, thin and like leather. Appetizers and pasta were excellent. When I told the waiter that the lamb was overcooked, his response was "That's how it comes" Other food was fairly good. 4. Entertainment was mediocre, Similar to other cruises but without the variety and talent. 5 No intellectual or creative activities such as I have experienced on other lines: no quizzes, few games (bocce, shuffleboard, darts), or participation activities. 6. Putting course was 3 ill kept holes. 7. The animation team was not in evidence and did not encourage passenger participation. 8. There was little communication regarding daily activities or reminders over a communication system as to what was going on during the day. 9. The service and attitude of staff was excellent. This was our first Costa cruise and we loved it. My husband and I had been wanting to see Scandinavia and St.Petersburg, so we decided to book this cruise. The ship was lovely and very clean. Things were well marked and it was easy to find one's way around. We had Suite 7314 on deck 7 which couldn't have been a better location. Our stewardess, Fe, kept the room immaculate and there was nothing that was too much trouble for her to do for us. Leao, our butler, was always checking in to see if we needed something and he delivered any of our room service requests promptly and with a smile. I can't say enough good things about our dining experience. I didn't know until we boarded that we had been assigned any-time-dining in a special dining room called Club Luminosa for all of our meals. After the first dinner, our waiters, Roger and Asis, knew how we liked our olive oil dip, what wines we preferred and the timing for the courses. All of the staff in the Club Luminosa were great and they operated like a well-oiled machine under the direction of Ronald King, the Maitre d'. Breakfast was wonderful with made to order eggs and dinner was three courses with several choices for each, or the chef's suggestions. The chef was usually right! I cannot speak too much about the large venue entertainment because we only went to one show which was an Italian tenor named Roberto. He was great and everyone seemed to be enjoying the show. We preferred the smaller venue performers, especially the duos in the Libra Bar. The two groups, Duo Smile and Duo Strange, were just excellent. We enjoy acoustic guitar and piano with singers performing nightclub songs and jazz. What fun we had there! LeRoy and John are the greatest waiters in this bar. I really enjoy spas so I spent part of every day in the ship's spa. Beautiful and restful and worth every penny. I was surprised that they only have shower gel, but I just put together a bag to take with me for my shampoo, lotions, etc. I had a couple of spa treatments and they were excellent. The service was impeccable everywhere except the Tour Excursion Desk. We booked two tours with Costa, but one was cancelled and the other had the time changed to four hours later than the original time so we declined that one. According to the tour staff, one may book and pay for a certain time, but they can change that to another time and you have to go or cancel, but you will not get a refund. I wish we could have conducted a seminar with them on customer service. Well, I will just remember never to book a tour with Costa when we go again. We did the Hop on Hop off buses in Helsinki, Tallin and Stockholm and a private tour with TJ Tours in St. Petersburg. All of these were easy and fun. Some brief overall thoughts to other Americans and Brits would be to go with the understanding that the staff speak English well and they are about the only ones. We practiced several Italian phrases which came in very handy and I got to use my French in the spa and we used our Spanish in the dining room and on tours. The Scandinavian couples we met on board were also excellent English speakers. The interesting thing is that most of the music and the performances were in English. I guess "Rocky Mountain High" doesn't really work in Italian. The main band in the Atrium was doing covers of Pink Floyd, Phil Collins, James Taylor and Creedence Clearwater Revival. We will not hesitate to travel with Costa again! Read Less

I was part of a larger group, booked via Globetrotter so I really did travel with Costa by my own choise. (Aktiespararna, where I´m a member, had a 50 year anniversary cruise.) • The cabin was really excellent, spacious and fresh. Very few disturbing sounds. • The theatre, where we had two days of education, was poorly equipped; the resolution on the screen was terrible and it was impossible to read. • The service in Taurus was excellent but the food was not; we had two really nice dinners, and five average ones, which I found disappointing. • The breakfast buffé at Taurus was excellent but I was not happy with the fact that I could not have breakfast after 9,00. • I did found it disturbing to have a feeling of being thrown out from the restaurant. • The buffé restaurant Andromeda, was a bit chaotic and not so nice. • I was satisfied whit the offer of your drinking package ”Pio Gusto”. Good value! • The ship was nice with many really nice areas to sit down, read and have a drink. • The crew who where engaged with the excursions was not very service minded, and spoke a poor english. A last minute booking, but having been on Costa ships previously I had a good idea of what to expect. I liked the fact that there were only 13 English passengers on board and lots of interesting people to meet from around the world. The staff were polite, even under pressure, and were extremely hard working. The cabin was kept clean and serviced efficiently. It was pleasant having a 'dual aspect' balcony. Yes, from time to time the table service was slow and there were a few other small issues that would have made a good experience even better, for example free tea and coffee and being allowed to remain on board longer at the end of the cruise. However when taken as a whole it was a lovely holiday. I have read other reviews and people love to complain but i enjoyed my holiday and I would certainly cruise with Costa again. Read Less

Costa cruises are only worth considering if you can buy one really cheaply and forget any notion that you'll get good service and be treated like a guest. On the positive side the dinner service and food was quite reasonable, unfortunately everything else is very sub standard. The impression is that the company is struggling to make a profit and therefore is charging extra for everything it can get away with and reducing staffing levels to such a point that you simply have to wait for ages to get a drink or food. We've been on 4 cruises with them in the last 5 years and each time the experience has been worse. For example this time the following stands out (only a selection from many poor experiences) Very, very slow service at breakfast, typically 40 minutes at least from placing an order (once you've had your order taken which again can be very slow) - on days where there are early excursions lots of people were walking out without hot food as they otherwise would have missed their departure. Very few waiters and very hard to get a coffee or tea and subsequent top up at breakfast. No bottled water at all, even though we'd paid 25 Euro for all inclusive drinks No tea or coffee available most of the day Bizarre 'Captain's cocktail reception' held in the theatre with one canape each (if you were lucky) - why invite people to a 'reception' if you can't be bothered to entertain them? In general you may think you're getting a cheap holiday but it won't be worth it, everyone we met from Italy, Spain,Scandinavia, USA, Mexico etc. were surprised at how poor the experience was compared to other cruise lines. There's also strange discrimination between some guests and others, maybe depending on where you come from. For example you get put on the early Dinner service by default and have to beg for a late sitting - the Maitre De told us this was because we were not in the right level. We did get transferred on the second night (having had to sit on our own the first night - we like to meet people - isn't that part of a cruise?) and the people we joined had also been moved after complaining - one couple from the USA and one couple from Mexico - they clearly could not understand how Costa treat guests and I felt a little embarrassed to be European. Final straw was on departure day - our flight was at 18:10 and despite this we were told we had to be clear of our cabin by 08:00 and leave the ship at 09:30. I thought they'd made a mistake as there were much later departure times for other 'guests' with late flights. Turns out if you haven't booked a Costa airport transfer you are not entitled to stay any later - that really is money grasping at its worst! I would never cruise with Costa again and strongly suggest you avoid them - Costa may save you a few pounds but is it really worth it when you're on holiday? Read Less

My wife and I went on our first cruise with a friend who had arranged it.I had some trepidation after booking (we agreed to the trip and booked it just 3 weeks before sailing), after reading the reviews on CC. With nothing to compare it to, we both had a good time on the boat. Not once did I encounter rude behavior by the staff and apparently some of the issues that others raised I didn't experience. The food was good, but not great.Others wrote that there was no buffet food available if you missed dinner but the buffet was open 5 of the 7 nights we were on board, the exceptions being the two nights the Gala dinner was going on. Our cabin steward, Suresh, was very good, and we weren't lacking for anything we needed. The shows were good, especially the two singers from South Africa who both had good voices that could handle a variety of song styles. Some of the lounge acts were from Cliché City (how many times can you hear "The Girl from Ipanema"?), but the Alterra Disco Bar band had everybody on the dance floor at all times. Now for the Costa Company. My wife is from the Dominican Republic and our friend ,also from the DR, was visiting friends and family in Spain when she saw the Costa Baltics cruise special. We agreed and through email and phone set it up with a Spanish travel agency.I wanted to book some shore excursions and modify the trip, but was unable to because the travel agent booked it on Costa's Spain website, which is only available if you live in Spain! One excursion in St. Petersburg to Catharine the Great's palace was scheduled for Tuesday-except the palace isn't open on Tuesday.A Stockholm city tour included a museum visit which closed 20 minutes after we got there. You can book excursions from your room through your TV, except that two of the ones we wanted were said to be unavailable but our friend got them later in the day at the office (which had a very long line).
