After researching different cruise lines on cruise critic and looking at their itineraries decided to try the Silver Spirit for our Caribbean vacation. This is our third cruise in 3 years. The first was on Seabourn Quest going to Canada in 2015. Last year was Oceania, Riveria also to Caribbean and 2017 Silver Seas, Silver Spirit. Silver Seas ranks in the middle, Seabourn being the best at everything, food, service and accommodations. Oceania was a Noro Virus nightmare. Silver Spirit, I rank in the middle, because somethings they do very well and others not so well. We flew into Ft. Lauderdale a day early to avoid stress of last minute air cancellations. (Our flight was cancelled the day we flew into Boston for our Seabourn cruise and we did not want a repeat of that experience) Since we were using Silver Seas air they wanted to charge us a diversion fee. I don't understand this there were plenty of people who want to fly in early. They said we could avoid it, by booking a hotel thru them.(This is the kind of blackmail I could do without). They booked us at the Marriott Harbor Beach, hotel. It was nice and they had a Silver Seas representative in lobby to help and provide information. The next morning we were taken by bus to the pier and embarkation went smoothly. Our bags arrived in our room promptly. Our verandah suite was very nice and bigger than we expected. Plenty of closet space and nice chest of draws in closet. Plenty of other storage nooks around cabin as well. THE ONE DRAW BACK IS THERE IS ONLY ONE PLUG. SO BRING A MULTI PLUG JACK TO USE FOR CHARGING. Especially, if you have a lot of devices. The cabin was clean and was in good shape for the age of the ship. One of the best experiences was our butler Rosie, she was sooo! nice and always tried to make our cruise enjoyable. Her helper kept the room very clean. Overall the crew was wonderful. All extremely friendly. Always had a smile on their face and were willing to do whatever they could to make your day. In the evening there are butlers in the hall who say good evening and guide you on your way. The pool area is nice and there are several open areas around the back of the ship where you can sit and watch the waives. Now the not so good. Food is very up and down(I asked other people what they thought and they said the same thing). Since this is an Italian line the pasta was delicious and is made fresh. Meat courses could be disappointing. Some dishes had no flavor or the meat was tough. One morning in The Restaurant pancakes were not really pancakes. The head waiter agreed. Never figured out what thebatter was that they used. There are plenty of other choices so not a big deal. Same brown sauce shows up on everything. Meat, veal, pork chicken they always served same brown sauce. The last evening had veal marsala, veal was delicious, but not marsala sauce, just the same brown sauce . If the food was consistent this would have been a fantastic cruise. Specialty restaurant La Terrazza, very good, Stars Supper Club enjoyed the entertainment not so much the tappas, LeChampagne very good (there is an up charge). The Grill did not try. The Restaurant very up and down. You'll have some good food and some disappointments. Lunch by the pool great. Delicious hamburgers and other choices. Entertainment was ok, some nights good others very good. Cruise director Vicki very nice. The workout facility was good lots of different equipment. Tried to book a massage, but they were already full. We did two shore excursions that we enjoyed. In St. Bart's the catamaran sail. Was supposed to stop at beach. Really he anchored off beach and you had to swim to shore. In Tortola a drive around the island, with a stop at a beach. This was very nice and the beach was very pretty. Would I go again? Maybe, probably would be more enjoyable a second time, since we know what food to order. I still would pick Seabourn first, if the itinerary was right. If you are thinking of sailing with this line give it a try. It is very relaxing no blaring announcements or band playing loud music by the pool. I think, if you read the reviews on cruise critic you can figure whether this cruise or any other is the one for you. Read Less

Overall a very nice ship in appearance and space to passengers ratio was good. Will not be too judgemental but really expected more for the price and hype of advertising. Embassy suites is nice to stay at night before embarkation---Tip: arrive early for embarkation and miss the gaggle (as early as noon although cabin may not be ready until 2:00pm)...Majority of guests where from Europe (Great Britain) and the average age was probably 70 and very demanding/at times rude-snobby behavior...felt like we were on a floating old folks home (we are a young 60)...advertisements/photos show younger professional folks... Public areas were mostly accommodating: Observation Lounge great place to relax with a good book and enjoy the views entering/departing ports. Dining choices very limited: Main dining room OK: on scale with a nice Carrabba's. Breakfast buffets much like an Embassy Suite experience/get there early to enjoy outside seating and comfortable process. Seating process slow and average dinner lasted 2-2.5 hours (far to long between courses). Must say that the Wine was above average and free flowing. Reservations to the three other restaurants impossible to get as they were monopolized by the folks that booked early...no limit to Number of nights they could book (not at all fair for the rest of us regular travelers). Limited shore excursions (Caribbean is limited period) and again limited seats taken by those who could plan 180 days out. Butler service so hyped is really nothing more than a maid with a big smile...not able to do much in the way of arrangements or service. Mini bar a joke unless you force the issue. Cruise director on another planet. Bingo and trivia may have been the highlight of ship board activities. Entertainment was High School quality but we tried to endure their performances. Piano players on board were playing electric key boards synthesized heavily to cover up average skills. Pool area cramped/miniture pool /but nice mini-hot tubs not used much. Lounge chairs as usual for any cruise were at premium and annoyingly cramped together. Fortunately we did not go on board with tremendous expectations; just needed time away together to decompress from holidays and most difficult year. We were successful at accomplishing this...for somebody looking to really have a great/truly first class experience try Seaborne lines or go with the best--Cunard lines (Queen Mary). Read Less

I chose this cruise for our 30th anniversary. We chose it somewhat last minute and reserved the last cabin available about 6 weeks before sailing date. The goal was a no expense spared luxury experience. What we got was a nice trip, better than a large ship but no where near the promised level of experience. For example: 1) restaurants were fully booked by the time we got our login . We were never able to eat at le champagne in spite of personal appeal to Maitre D as it was our 30th anniversary. 2) our welcome materials custom made for us arrived at the wrong address after we had already left 3) excursions were also mostly booked by the time we got our login 4) we were given a "personal cruise consultant " who called me to introduce himself , only to tell us later that it was a mistake we were not entitled to a personal consultant at all because we booked through a travel agent 5) deck chairs were full every day at sea by noon. Requests for deck chairs were met with shrugs and then it took a supervisor to figure things out 6) assurances of "no lines " were just not Accurate 7) corporate assurances that "the butler would work things out " for us on the ship to get us our reservations were met with "I can't help with that anymore " from the butler and "it's all done on line now" 8) butler service was pointless in most cases as he claimed he was powerless to do much of anything, pretty much it's the same as maid service 9) we requested an upgrade in cabin (paid) and there was never any acknowledgement. I, confident they didn't follow Through 10) I read somewhere the minibar would be stocked and it was most definitely not. For a New Years cruise I would have expected a bottle of champagne on ice in the cabin when we arrived or some snacks but we did not have 11) several times the gym was so full the cardio equipment was all in use and there was a wait, plus no room to use free weights as too many people were crammed into a tight space I want to make clear that the shipboard experience was wonderful. I do not blame any of the personnel on board as they only can do what they are able . And they did well on board . However, the ship was VERY full and some of the policies made it less than outstanding. I am not really okay with the explanations we got which were 1) you booked late (we paid the same or more as everyone else, not sure why we should have a sub-par experience?) 2) it's your travel agents job (again more passing the buck. Not okay from a luxury cruise line) 3) i can't help you it's all done online We learned that a passenger can block book the exclusive restaurants for ever night ... there is no limit. This is a cruise line policy which is not fair to all passengers and results in sub par experiences. There should be a limit to how many times a passenger can pre book a restaurant They ran out of deck Chairs? How expensive are they? Plenty of space, maybe you all could buy a couple more chairs? anyways it's was nice, we had a nice trip but we thought our experience on the Norwegian epic in the concierge floor was superior to this and THAT is really Disappointing. We give the crew an A and we give the precruise and corporate policies an F which combined gives them a C. Read Less

We sailed from Barbados to Barbados on the Silver Spirit from 20th November to 8th December 2016 to the Amazon. Silversea is our favourite cruise line and we are loyal Venetian members. However standards have fallen considerably despite there being only 153 passengers on board. Silversea was known for staff who addressed passengers by their names. No more. A fellow passenger proved it after fifteen days on board. The waiter and barman did not know his nor his wife's name despite being frequent Silvetsea passengers. Do crew not care to learn the names of passengers over two weeks? A shame as that small detail which made passengers feel at home has been forgotten over the years. Bring back the tradition with regular staff training and check ups. The food menus now repeat over three days for lunch. Why? While on food, the menus are non creative, the chips soggy and the meats overdone despite orders for medium or rare cuts. The bread is sub standard, served cold and can be at least warmed for the guests. Imagine cool soup and colder bread. The Seshin menu and food quality is not to standard. Why have fresh sushi and sashimi on a menu when the fish is obviously refrigerated? Best to stick to Pan Asian, South Asian or Far Eastern food. This said The Champagne, Stars and Poolside Hot Stones Grill is superb. The saving grace these days in Silversea are the staff like Cruise Director Moss Hills, the service staff from the butlers to the waiters and bar personnel who go all out to make a passengers stay comfortable and luxurious. On the other hand the Hotel Director Maurius cared not to reach out to passengers nor even wish them a simple Good Morning on the decks. This despite a friendly Captain Mino Pontello and Chief Engineer who made an appearance daily on the decks to greet passengers. This is a critique only to improve our favourite cruise line. Please pull your socks up and revert to your once excellent standard. We sail in a few days on the Silver Whisper through the Panama Canal from Fort Lauderdale to San Francisco and hopefully Silversea will have set a renewed standard over the festive season and for 2017. As true well wishers of Silversea, looking forward to excellent service henceforth. Read Less

The last few holidays, we have traveled Cunard and loved it. Wanting to embark from the U.S., we decided to give Silversea a try. The marketing suggested upscale and the price certainly reflected upscale. From the outside things looked pretty great. Once we stepped into the cabin, we got a surprise. Start with stains on the floor, drapes, and outer bed blanket. Friends offered to cut the frazzles off the frayed and very outdated sofas. The glass coffee table was seriously scratched. The dressing table was less than one foot from the end of the bed. My husband had to climb over the bed while I dried my hair. The verandah floor was shop worn and had two plastic sitting chairs with no cushions, and table. I suppose you could have put your foot up on the table for relaxing. Our room, 626 was noisy. It had a loud vibration. We thought the food was delicious and beautifully presented. We also found it difficult to get reservations at the other restaurants. Service started out great. After New Years, the staff size decreased. And they seemed less interested in pleasing. A good training motto for staff might be, "A 1000 dollars a day for our clients means you give them 1000 dollar service for each day!" While the cruise was all inclusive, I don't drink alcohol but like virgin mojitos. After New Years, I was told the limes and mint were gone. Sorry! Food also went down hill after New Years. My biggest surprise, was the spa. The prices were right in line with Four Season, Regent Cruise, etc. The robe I was given had a big rip. And the waiting area included a few dark brown sofas and tables. Something you would find in a medical clinic waiting area. The refridg had nothing in it. The staff were chatting it up. It was not a place to relax. And….if you wanted to use the warm stone chair, whirlpool or sauna, you were asked to pay another 29 dollars. Not one thing about this spa said, "awww." We bought our tickets in March and paid 11k per person. We met other guests who paid as little as 6k. The cruise gave us 1000 to spend "in-house." Right after New Years, the internet connection (we used 250 to buy minutes) went out. It stayed out for the rest of the cruise. Some of the passengers were offered a 50 (nonrefundable credit.) Had they offered the credit sooner, I may have used it in the gift shop. I let the hotel director know right away about our room, and within the hour, he came to the cabin. Very attentive. We booked our own excursions as the excursion planned by the line were not appealing. There were some nice thing about this cruise, however the bad outweighed. We won't use it again. Read Less

Just returned from 9 days on Spirit Venice - Istanbul. Lovely people/guests, great staff, and wonderful ports of call. Entertainment - missable. Shore excursions very expensive - cheaper to do it on your own. The furnishings, being that it is their newest ship, are out of Victorian times and very dark, tired and depressing. TV in cabins is difficult to fathom out and you need glasses to view it as it is set behind glass and has a minute screen!! Food - a lot to be desired, badly presented, boring and certainly not 5* or 6*. Presentation needs a lot to be desired and quality of food definitely poor and uninspired. The upmarket "special restaurant La Champagne" where you pay $40 per head for the privilege, was so bad we walked out but were still charged. We waited 25 minutes from entry into the restaurant before anyone even spoke to us, offered a drink, menus or even a crust of bread!! It would have been nice to have seen the Captain or his "elite staff" even once on the ship apart from general introductions at the beginning. They were all in hiding. Compared to other cruise lines - Regent, Seabourn, Crystal, this ship or line comes way way done the list and certainly is not 6*. Very very disappointing. Read Less

We are in our 70's and this was a cruise with friends, back to back Barcelona/Civitavecchia/Barcelona. Embarkation was smooth but one of our cases got misplaced on debarkation causing a bit of a panic. Service was, for the most part outstanding, including cabin steward, butler, maitre d's, waiters, bar staff, room service. All excellent. The food however was a big disappointment in the main dining room sometimes cold, not very tasty, tough meats. Pasta was usually good but over salted. Seishin (extra cost) was particularly poor, and the Italian restaurant was average. Champagne restaurant was outstanding both times we went. but you have to pay extra for that. Many people we talked to commented on the poor food and particularly Seishin. Wines were average at best, the wine we kept going back to was a Bogle Chardonnay that is about $8 in the grocery stores. One could of course pay extra for wine, but on a cruise costing $1000 per day one expects better. Wifi was abysmally slow. The decor on the ship is looking very tired and dark. Our cabin furniture was showing signs of wear and dents. Silversea is, I believe, in a cost cutting mode in an attempt to improve profitability. Good Luck with that approach. Read Less

Appalling, disorganised boarding....if I want a quarter glass of paintstripper prosecco I will sail Celebrity. Front line staff were for the most part very good,, but little effort made to learn customer names. Our Butler was too good for this ship, and was a complete star....Very flexible and accommodating. Our Grand Suite had a very usable, cleverly thought layout, but was let down by a tired and unimaginative decor, with lots of scuffs/stains/minor damage to both indoor and outdoor furniture. The suite was particularly quiet, and the fact that the adjoining suite (that would have been used to make this Grand 2 bedrooms) was unsold and unoccupied with no risk of noise through the adjoining door. This was pointed out to the very defensive Hotel Manager who seemed somewhat ineffectual. Food ranged from inedible to very good - Stars food concept and quality needs a radical rethink. Pool Grill was very average. Main dining room was fairly consistent with some very good dishes, and the always available gelato / cheese menu is a great idea. Seishin was a highlight with great food and staff. The downers foodwise were Le Champagne (I would have insisted on a refund had it not been included in our suite benefits), and a really poor afternoon tea. Bread and pastries were pretty dire in all venues.....on the upside I kept the carbs in check! Cruise Director Moss Hills was a star, and the entertainment was passable (unusual for a small ship)....The jazz duo in Stars were a particular highlight. The new boutiques were a waste of space - the lovely staff were always eager to chat but rarely sold anything other than passengers spending OBC. The pool area, and area to the aft of the observation lounge was populated by chain-smoking alcoholics who made the areas unusable. All in all this crossing was a wildly inconsistent experience, with a complacent management team. People watching on board made up for many of the shortfalls. Read Less

This was my first time on this ship AND i will be back BUT. PRO'S I expected much more for the money we have payed and what others were talking about. The ship is beautiful spotless and alot of quiet time spaces. very nice food choices. The restaurant was our favorite. My husband liked the Italian. . Lovely lovely surroundings. CONS. I have been on the Cunard the THE GRILLS , people who have this special service recommended it. I would ssay the SIOLVER SPIRT is like a big GRILLS> BUt, i must say the butlers were not attentive meaning ours. I heard others complain. I had to ask several times for tea. I had requested and this was not meeet on a daily basis. THe restaurant s the Rock is great,but the table was not cleaned after all of the grease from the live cooking. ( this was so sad). The food was delicious but who wants to be covered in grease on the table. The restaurant again was our favorite., BUT the waiters would forget and leave you unattentive. We change several times to another table, where we recieved great seervice. I must say there uniforms were sometimees dirty. There were spots on their ties. I guess there is no inspection. I just expected premier service in the look and there attire, shamefull i would say. The music duo in the rocks or lunch by the pool was ok, we must of heard the same 10 songs over and over. God was this annoying. Sometimes it is sooh hard to sit on a cruise and hear the same songs for 17 days. The tours, was lucky because the tour people at the desk did not not now alot of information about the tours. They were very poor. I think SS should go on some of thises tours first before they send us. I am talking about the Mexico tous mainly they were AWFULL at best. The otheres were great. The mexico tours were selling us real estate and telling us to come back and buy, really. I thought that the guests should have dress a little better than sloppy attire and try to evade dressing up on formal nights. I hope IF i choose this ship things will be better. There was alot of repeated custmers that said that SS is not the same, tooo bad. Read Less

This will be as hard for me to write as it will for Silversea fans to read and I will try to be as objective and fair as possible in my comments. But when you've had an unhappy experience the devil is in the detail so while some of you may think I'm being too harsh or unreasonable and many more will disagree with me I'm going to give my honest opinion from the perspective of a Silversea first timer writing as an experienced cruiser with Crystal, Regent and Seabourn. Our first criteria when choosing a cruise is the itinerary so when I saw this Silversea Auckland-Melbourne trip it seemed ideal and the perfect opportunity to sample Silversea for the first time. These "top four" companies all aim to provide more or less the same product so while they offer a similar overall experience, their differences can make or break our enjoyment. I'm afraid ours was broken. Put simply, this was not a happy ship. That elusive atmosphere of people relaxing, socialising, making new friends and generally having a great time was missing and, apart from a few notable exceptions, too many were aloof, unfriendly, unapproachable and sometimes downright rude. There were impenetrable "cliques" who clearly regarded even a friendly "good morning" as intrusive. The uneasy mood applied to some of the staff and crew too and service seemed slow and disorganised, even chaotic at times. One got the sense they sometimes lacked proper training or supervision so that cheerful "spark" was missing and morale seemed low. The Ship : Clean and well maintained but the drab brown/maroon Art Deco theme makes the interior spaces and public rooms seem dark and enclosed. Any natural light is absorbed by the decor which doesn't help the overall ambiance. This is a matter of personal taste of course but we didn't like it. None of the public rooms were especially appealing or welcoming and there is a marked lack of natural light everywhere. The small, cramped theatre in particular is very gloomy. The artwork, some for sale at ridiculous prices, was uninspiring. Overall 7/10 The suite : Spacious with plenty of storage but again it was rather dark and dreary. Comfortable bed but no clock near it. The flat screen TVs recessed behind the mirrors are a big Minus. Poor visibility and watching yourself watching TV (especially in bed) is extremely distracting. Eeeeek! The remote control was very temperamental and you had to be at exactly the right angle for it to work. Good movie selection but the other news-only channels were limited and boring. Bathroom has a welcome full size tub and roomy separate shower stall with a great overhead cascade shower head and good water pressure. The sink design is impractical and the fiddly tap very annoying. Generous verandah. Overall 7/10 The Staff : Superficially smiling and friendly but they just didn't seem happy and on a couple of occasions were downright surly. Service was woefully slow and/or disorganised sometimes for no apparent reason. One just got the impression there was chaos behind the scenes and they were not pulling together as a "team". We still don't see the point of Butlers and on the rare occasions we needed to call ours it was hit and miss whether he responded. The cruise director, Don Fluke, was practically invisible and we never saw him around and about except during super competitive (as usual!) trivia and MCing the evening show. A good CD should be aware of the general "vibe" among his pax and be proactive in ensuring any problems addressed quickly. He should at least get out there and engage with people. I'm afraid this one wasn't doing that - he just wasn't around, only the occasional voice over the tannoy. Other senior staff and officers were equally elusive compared to others we've known. Overall 7/10 The Passengers : We met some delightful people we now consider friends, but the overall demographic was most definitely Grumpy Senior and trying to even make polite eye contact with many of them was impossible, let alone strike up a conversation. They just didn't want to know. Maybe the rotten weather and rough seas affected their ability to relax and enjoy themselves or maybe they were just snobs but it certainly put a real damper on the whole trip for us. Even when the weather improved, the sour attitude of many pax didn't. Get over yourselves and lighten up people! Overall 5/10 Dining. : the main Restaurant is pretty much what you'd find on any ship like this. Service was efficient enough but slow and it was sometimes difficult to explain special requests, eg, sauce on the side. La Terrazza, complete with traditional intimidating maître d' is the busy but dark and gloomy breakfast buffet and lunch venue and then becomes a booking only Italian restaurant for dinner, very much like the Regent Sette Mari concept. The Pool Grill serves the usual burger-type fare through the day (but no salad buffet) and then offers a Hot Rocks "cook your own" system for dinner, again you have to pre-book. There is no light supper or snack facility in the evening apart from Room Service. I suspect this move away from buffet dining generally is more about strict portion control and cost cutting than what the customers want. We didn't try the specialist restaurant Seishin so can't comment but we were given a surprise booking we hadn't asked for at Le Champagne. We were also given different bookings to those we'd asked for or at different venues to those we thought we'd booked. The whole booking system was a shambles. In any event I was told by a Silversea regular that people book everything they can on day one and then don't bother to turn up or cancel so there seem to be empty tables in "fully booked" venues. The Food. : Very average, and some very obvious cost cutting in evidence everywhere. It just lacked the Wow factor. I don't consider a dollop of tomato ketchup on three semi frozen prawns and watery lettuce a "luxury prawn cocktail", or a few lumps of rubbery Edam a "cheese selection". As for the cold, soggy "classic Silversea burger", I've had better McDonalds. Having said that we aren't foodies and and eating isn't the purpose of cruising for us so while the uninspiring, bland, over-sweet repetitive menus with few choices and meagre portions were disappointing, it wasn't a disaster. We didn't risk the lunchtime sushi which had obviously been prepared well in advance and didn't look especially fresh or appetising (or safe). And a quick question: why do we have to place a special order for simple breakfast toast? Were Noro precautions in place? If so, nobody told us. Wines were limited and average at best and it was very hard to get a straight answer from the sommeliers exactly what choices were available, let alone a real wine list. Overall 6/10 The Entertainment : Competent but predictable and boring. A 10pm start for the production shows is way too late after a long day of busy excursions so we missed most of them. Or maybe we just aren't the party animals we used to be! However, the entertainers in the bars and other more intimate venues were very talented and enjoyable. The enrichment lectures were OK. Overall 7/10 Excursions : We only did a couple but they were well organised and interesting. There seems to be enough flexibility in the system to change/cancel bookings at short notice which is a Plus. Overall 8/10 Casino : We aren't gamblers, didn't use it and so can't comment but it appeared to be closed or practically deserted most of the time. Shops : Large space dedicated to jewellery/watches and a shop selling high end cosmetics, perfumes, handbags and limited clothing. Useful things like basic toiletries, toothpaste, deodorant etc were kept hidden away in a cupboard so you had to ask for assistance. No Silversea merchandise (pens, hats, etc) available as far as I could see. Clothing prices were outrageous, $200+ for a cotton teeshirt anyone? Overall 5/10 And speaking of outrageous, let's talk about the Internet : Various packages available, all expensive. The basic Pay As You Go charge is 50c per minute. This is pure extortion, there's no other word for it in this day and age. The actual system was very unreliable anyway which makes the price even more outrageous. There was no IT assistance available except for 1 hour per day from a bored and distracted crew member who obviously thought he had better things to do. Overall 3/10 Embarkation was a breeze and took 10 mins max. Disembarkation was a 2 hour ordeal caused by bad organisation. Overall 5/10 So, did we have a good trip? Any time spent on a ship is good so in that sense we enjoyed it. The Silver Spirit handles rough seas very comfortably which was just as well because we did have some lumpy weather, although the 2-day crossing of the notorious Tasman Sea was unusually calm. But I'm afraid we were left feeling very disappointed, and yes, ripped off, as were quite a few other pax we managed to strike up a conversation and compare notes with. One couple on the whole LA-LA 64 day round trip were already wondering if they had made a huge and expensive mistake, and another was ready to jump ship well before their final destination. I don't believe we have unrealistic expectations, nor are we picky, high maintenance complainers but if something just isn't right we will say so, especially when we know other cruise lines can do it so much better. Every cruise line has its loyal followers so I'm sure my comments won't be well received by some but after this experience we won't be cruising with Silversea again, no matter how tempting the itinerary. This was our second cruise with Silversea and our 8th overall on luxury cruises. We went with Silversea to the Arctic last year and decided to try them again for a cruise on the Black Sea. We were disappointed on several fronts. 1) Customer service at head office It is non-existent. As in-- my travel agent e-mailed a week ago regarding a complaint (see below) and we have heard nothing. I e-mailed the Director of Guest Relations 5 days ago and have heard nothing. We have e-mailed just to receive a copy of the folio and have heard nothing! Assuming their e-mail is not broken, this is beyond me for a purported luxury company. At this point, I don't even know how to get in touch with them for a receipt. 2) Shore excursions Our itinerary originally visited the Ukraine for three stops, but this was cancelled for obvious reasons. They replaced them with 2 stops in Turkey and Sochi. These ports were very uninteresting. What's worse, are the shore excursions. In Sochi the guide could barely speak English. And when you pay for a shore excursion, your expectation is to see stuff. Not to be taken to the Radisson hotel and have a drink and snack (hello!! we are on an all inclusive ship!). When I complained to the shore desk that this was sub-par (along with most everyone who did a shore excursion in Sochi), he wrote the following in the Chronicles the next day: "The guides are locals who may have a heavy accent and/or lack on expertise in all aspects of the city" (not being able to translate from the person who was giving us the tour in Russian is not a heavy accent, it's a lack of English), "Please remember that, as travelers, it is what lies outside the window that is important, what we see, hear and experience for ourselves and see the places we are visiting for what they are and not what we would like them to be". You can only take this to mean, we will charge you the same price as a top notch tour, but expect less and don't complain. How patronizing!! 3) Dining Overall dining was fine with one exception of the maitre d' being extremely rude and not wanting to cater to a special request (steak with steamed vegetables). We were sitting with guests who are consultants in hospitality management-- they were pretty appalled. I had to hold my husband back from saying things further, given it was our last night and I didn't want to ruin it. 4) The good The ship is fine. The crew is outstanding (but I have never encountered a less than outstanding crew). The rooms are fine, except I found the shower in the bathroom awkward. We met several people on the boat who were sailing with Silversea for the first time and none would come back...neither will we. The ship was half empty so maybe others have already figured this out. There are other companies who provide the same amenities but with better customer service. This one left such a bad taste in my mouth that I will never sail with them again. Read Less

There are many things about Silversea that are truly excellent and we had high hopes of making our cruise the first of many. Transfer from the airport and check in and embarkation were extremely smooth Even your hand luggage was carried up the gangway for you Cabins were truly lovely and the TV screens incorporated into wall to wall mirrors whilst small were very nice as was the vast selection of movies available to watch . the Bathrooms were truly beautiful and very well planned Could not fault the maid or butler Gideons service The walk in wardrobe was disapointing and very badly planned because the door was too close to the rail which ran the length on one side so mens jackets etc got caught if you closed it , by same token the drawer unit at the end was too wide so all clothes had to be hung at angles and constantly pushed well back or they caught in the drawers The libray was well stocked .......some days there were copies of Daily Newspapers The in house singers and dancers were very amateur indeed but the Guest Flautist and Pianist were excellent Trivia was clearly a clique affair so we didnt bother Breakfast in La terrazza was a great selection Lunch too although predominated by Italian sausage Dinner in Main Dining Room had a strange menu on a 3 day repeat and it was often hard to find a suitable choice not once did a fillet steak ordered med rare or even rare turn up anything other that med welldone Bar staff especially Frederick were all very good and rapidly knew your name and your drinks preference The Observation Bar on Deck 11 was a peaceful retreat with a great Barman The one thing that totally and utterly ruined our entire trip was CIGAR SMOKING ,,,,passengers were smoking cigars on balconies so that made many unusable The only comfortable seating outside that was in the shade was at the back of the Panorama Bar on Deck 9 however this was rendered unusable by cigar smokers who even if they kept to the so called VERY AMBIGUOUS designated smoking area the stench drifted right across the deck and forced one to leave Paulo the Hotel Manager and his Deputy Tim would not even deign to experience the problem and Bar staff were expected to deal with arrogant cigar smokers who picked up ash trays and moved them at will What little undercover loungers there were on pool deck were always full and too close to the smoking section all along one side Clearly on Silversea SMOKERS RULE and since theres been not even the courtesy of a reply from Head Office to a constructive letter its clear that Silversea simply do not care For a 6 star Luxury Line to treat majority non smoking passengers with such disdain or consideration of their health is quite simply not acceptable Read Less

After cruising on over a half dozen cruise lines over twenty years, we finally chose to try Silversea and reserved a very expensive top category suite. Regrettably, we didn't feel that this cruise would be considered a "luxury" experience. While the majority of the ship's staff did appear to try to please passengers, we simply didn't believe the cruise lived up to its "luxury" price. Check in at the pier required standing in line 25 to 30 minutes. We had to sit in a shuttle bus to get to the ship until the bus was full. Then, once aboard, we were told that our suite would be ready in an hour-and-a-half. We never met the ship's hotel manager or captain. Apparently, there was no Captain's Dinner on the sailing. The welcome "event" for first time passengers was held in the theater, with two speeches and a glass of complimentary champagne. Room service breakfast was bland and cold. (Tried it just one time) Free movies on the ship's television system stopped and started a few times. One stopped and wouldn't re-start at all. (Perhaps a bandwidth problem?) Disembarkation was a log jam in the atrium and down the hallways. We were not aware of any waiting area for suite guests. And while disembarkation was announced by luggage tag color, this procedure was not enforced. It was a stampede with passengers with various colors all trying to exit at the same time. Food was good, but not fantastic. Service in the main dining room was especially slow at breakfast and lunch. We've been in many top suites on numerous ships. We just didn't feel that Silversea Spirit was worth the "luxury" cost, nor did the Spirit live up to our expectations. Read Less

Last month we embarked on The Silver Sea Silver Spirit for what we believed would be a superb experience. We could not have been more disappointed!. The only part of the cruise that met our expectations was the cabin and butler(although at first he was hard to understand, he was fabulous). Let me tell you about dining on board: mediocre service and poor quality food. What we saw is what what we would have expected from a large 3000 passenger vessel which would have cost much much much less that what we paid. We had traveled with Seaborne where the food and service were first class and we expected the same. At the Silver Spirit, most of the waiting staff was not as solicitous as they should have been, but the worse part is that the food just was not good. For example, I ordered a steak and salad by the pool, and the meat I received was inedible. The tuna sandwich was a thin spread of tuna on a non very appetizing bread. The panini was cold...etc,etc,etc....When we ordered drinks by the pool, we waited 20 minutes!!!The main restaurant was a 6 out of 10...the only restaurant that I would consider visiting again was The Hot Rock Grill... The entertainers were beyond bad. The dancers had no grace or talent. I have found that there is usually a big difference between the disembarkation at a luxury line and all others. The exception to this rule was of course the Silver Spirit. We disembarked in Canes. I believe that the original itinerary indicated Monte Carlo, but that was provably changed due to the prince's wedding. Disembarkation was not at a port, but in tenders, and at first they seemed to have it organized well. Passengers were waiting in the lounges until they were called by assigned color and it went quick. We expected to see the luggage organized in a similar way at the port. It was not!, most of the luggage had not even arrived at port. We had to wait in the sun (without any facilities) and then crowd around vans that were bringing the luggage to search for it. We had 4 pieces of luggage and 3 of them came in 3 separate vans. The last one was lost! It was recovered and brought to us at the airport a couple of hours later.
