This was our fifth Silversea cruise, our second on the Muse but our first repositioning voyage. As always, we flew to our embarkation city the day beforehand and had a fun 24 hours in Athens. We didn’t feel it necessary to book our accommodation through Silversea as it’s a major European city with good transport links. When you just need a relatively central location, a comfortable bed and a good shower, why pay over the odds? Silversea waived the “deviation fee” on this occasion so we booked a simple hotel 10 minutes on the metro from the Acropolis. We enjoyed exploring the city on the Sunday and spent Monday morning in the magnificent Acropolis Museum before taking an inexpensive taxi to Piraeus and boarding the ship with minimum fuss. We were sat outside La Terrazza having lunch within 15 minutes. We previously sailed on the Muse on her inaugural voyage in April 2017 and had a great time, despite the dining chaos complained of by some. It definitely felt like a home-coming, with some familiar faces amongst the crew and we easily slipped into the warm embrace of luxury provided onboard. The ship looked good and well-kept. For us, the public spaces achieve the balance between muted luxury and comfort - we are not interested in being surrounded by “bling”. Our suite, although on a lower deck than we have previously sailed on, was in all other respects exactly the same and very convenient for the “big beige lounge” (the Dolce Vita) and Team Trivia every afternoon. Over the course of the cruise, we ate in all the restaurants with the exception of La Dame. This was a conscious choice on our part as on our previous voyage we didn’t feel La Dame merited the extra charge when the food in Atlantide is particularly good. We dined in Kaiseki to celebrate a birthday and the chefs and staff gave us a memorable evening. We also enjoyed the sushi and sashimi for lunch at Kaiseki, which sometimes provided a quieter alternative to the buffet or the pool deck. The food at all restaurants ranged from very good to excellent. It was pleasing to see that the menu at Silver Note (previously our lest favourite option) had improved. The flavours at Indochine were spot-on and the bar there was one of the nicest on the ship. Not all guests appreciate Asian fusion, but it was heartening to see the Indochine dining room busier than previously. Where we had previously sailed on port-intensive itineraries with relatively few sea days, we had to make an adjustment on this cruise where it was roughly half port and half sea days. This was made easier with plenty to keep us busy. There were three guest lecturers on board, two of whom - Mark Elowitz and Tom Jones - were particularly popular. Team Trivia became increasingly popular as the cruise progressed. Cruise Director Vikki conducted matters with elan and confidence. We used the gym regularly and my husband attended a number of classes with the fitness instructor, who he rated highly. The jogging track was busy with walkers and runners first thing in the morning. We had a bridge tour, various cooking demonstrations in different parts of the snip, a galley tour and many other diversions. The Voices of Silversea did a really good job on this voyage and all the various musicians worked hard to support each other and devise new combinations of musical entertainment to offer guests. Charlie the guitarist was a particular star. In addition, there were two other artists brought in for different parts of the cruise - a singer/pianist and a flamenco guitarist. Both were very skilled. We took a number of excursions in the ports we visited. The desert jeep safari in Sharm El Sheikh was more fun and interesting than we had originally expected. The landscapes through which we drove were remarkable and the visit to the Bedouin camp was enlivened by both a whirling dervish and a belly dancer. The full day excursion to Petra was tiring but very well worth it. Again, the desert landscape we passed through to get there was quite spectacular. Everybody will say that there isn’t enough time to do more than skim the surface in Petra and I think that is true. Once we had passed through the Siq, we left the tour group behind and wandered on our own. There was enough flexibility in the lunch arrangements for us to maximise the time in the old city and just grab something quick back at the Movenpick Hotel. After all, there didn’t see a lot of point in going all that way to spend half of it sitting in the dining room of a hotel, however nice. In Safaga, we took the overnight excursion to Luxor. This gave us the best chance to see as much as we could in the time available. For us, the Valley of the Kings was the highlight and more time there rather than at a couple of the photo stops on the way back to Luxor would have been welcome. The evening buffet dinner at the Sonesta Hotel on the banks of the Nile was very relaxed and enjoyable. Having sailed through Pirate Alley and reached Salalah, we cancelled the excursion we had booked and took a taxi with another couple. This gave us the chance to see what the city had to offer at our own pace. It’s not a big place but there are still points of interest - the vegetable and fish markets were amazing. It always surprises us when we hear and read complaints of poor service on Silversea. We have never experienced anything less than exemplary service and this cruise was no different. Our butler and room attendant were efficient and friendly and did a beautiful job of decorating the suite for my husband’s birthday. The staff definitely deserved the applause at the crew parade on our penultimate evening on board. Disembarkation at Muscat was a little slower than on previous occasions, but that was more to do with the local immigration officials than with Silversea staff. All the arrangements for our transfers within Muscat went smoothly. We are looking forward to our next Silversea cruise - we have an open booking and are still pondering which itinerary to try next. Based on our previous experience, we are confident that Silversea will deliver the cruise we want. Read Less

To visit castl Gandolfo and Carcassonne and to experience Muse. Restaurants. I always thought I would prefer separate individual restaurants as you have on Muse. But, now that I experienced that I was totally wrong. The restaurants were great. The food was wonderful. But, we never got to know anyone. It was like dining in a restaurant onshore. The main reception bar area was huge. We always went to the bar on our other cruises (2 world SS cruises, plus others). On Muse we never went once. Too impersonal. The arts restaurant is a great idea. We went there a few times. We prefer dining in our suite on longer cruises. After one exhausting excursion we decided to have dinner in our suite. But, you can only have the 24 hr menu in the suite. I was shocked. We had an owners cabin aboard Oceania once and the butler brought us food from all the restaurants. I could have Italian and my husband oriental. If they can do it, SS can do it. Read Less

Choose cruise because the iteniary was interesting with stops in NYC, Newfoundland and Ireland. Ship is very lovely but the food services are TERRIBLE. The food preparation, service (never hot in serving temperature), quality and selection of food venues is the worst of any of my over 1000 sailing days on various lines. Basically only 2 inside restaurant choices for lunch daily. Both serving below average food in selection and quality. Do not open the Japanese restaurant nor the IndoChina for addition luncheon variety except on shore days, which makes no sense. Other than the IndoChina restaurant, menus remained the same in all the inside restaurants for an entire cruise. Not even Evening Specials. Think the only reason for keeping the Atlantide Restaurant open (the worst of all the eating places) is to drive passengers to the 2 pricey optional restaurant choices.....neither of which is outstanding. The best food is offered in outside venues with no enclosures for weather considerations. This is true of both lunch and dinner. The Grill serves hot food and good service. The Pizza Parlor is also excellent. The Italian restaurant, which you would expect to be outstanding due to the ship's owner ship is barely adequate. Menu does not include such staples as meatballs, sausages, Ceasar Salad or cannolis. Gravy ( sauce) is ok but not authentic Italian taste or quality. The bar service was very good as well as the nightly entertainment in the bar. Overall entertainment was amateurish with young on- board singers and dancers and a couple of guests. No professionals. Activities on the ship definitely designed for non-active seniors. The usual bingo, trivia games,etc. Cabins and the ship in general were clean, modern and very pleasing. Excursions were fun and well handled by the staff as were the post trip hotel accommodations and transfers. Read Less

The ship is gorgeous, the staff is supreme, the food is wonderful. Our only criticism is regarding activities and entertainment. The highlight of every afternoon was Bingo and team Trivia. Not our idea of exciting and unique entertainment. There was also only a limited amount of board games on the ship. Throughout the 16 day cruise, food service was very slow, but the food quality was superior, as was the staff. The issues seemed to always be in the kitchen. One night, in the level 4 dining room, it took over 3.5 hours to complete dinner. We gave up on the idea of dessert. The head chef was very kind and seemed quite good at her job. I did go on a tour of the galley. I will give the benefit of the doubt. It’s a newer ship and there is a learning curve. They need to figure out how to shift focus on specific restaurants when business has higher than normal traffic. With all this said, we generally had a very good experience and plan to continue to use Silversea. Read Less

Ship with a wow factor is the first impression. Suites are well furnished and comfortable with an excellent bathroom. Nicely furnished verandah. Bars range from the intimate Atlantide and Arts Cafe to the larger Panorama and extremely large Dolce Vita, plus the Pool Bar. Good selection of premium liquor not supported by the mixes available. Good entertainment in the Panorama and Dolce Vita. Wide range of dinning options, Atlantide fish and steak menu in a comfortable restaurant with good ambience. Fish and Texas steaks the best items. Indochine an Asian fusion menu in a rather sterile restaurant and less comfortable. All the dishes sampled were good. Hot Rocks and Spaccanapoli both on deck serving steaks and fish or Pizza respectively are both good in warm weather only.There are no heaters in Hot Rocks! Nor wind breaks for either location. Arts Cafe is a delight for coffee or tea with its ever changing menu breakfast, light lunch, afternoon tea, cocktail hour to chocolates and truffles after dinner. Space at a premium during tea. La Terrazza the restaurant serving buffet breakfast and lunch and an Italian menu at night. Lacks ambience due to its size and table locations. The ships menus take literary license and are fixed unlike the other ships. Food is variable in preparation most noticeable in La Terrazza and Atlantide to a lesser degree. Also food is never served hot always barely warm. House wine selection is very good. Service from long serving staff is excellent, many of the recent hires need better training. Outdoor and indoor seating areas were a mixed bag but mostly populated by uncomfortable chairs. Spoils the many nice nooks for enjoying the cruise scenery. Ships laundry was very good. Monitors around the ship are annoying they only show location and itinerary of all Silversea ships no navigation data like the other ships. Entertainment and the theatre leaves much to be desired. The theatre does not have reserved space for handicap people and the slope of the floor makes for poor sightlynes from the rear. Seats are also uncomfortable. Cruise Director and his assistant are excellent. Lecturers were good but have been on Silverseas many times and its time for new blood. Destination lecturer was superficial and not always factualy or politically correct. Read Less

A brand new ship. Cost cutting everywhere, from the plastic decor and "modern" drawerless cabin (really? there's no storage!) to the half a pattypan squash and two potato balls accompanying your dinner every single night from the same menu. They put it on fancy plates and call it luxury or nouvelle cuisine, but we can't help but call it cutting corners. Flawed concepts ruin your experience, like reservation-only specialty restaurants with no main dining room that leaves hundreds of people to eat at 9:30 or eat outside, covered in blankets, eating pizza or DIY grill while crossing the Atlantic ocean in October. Either that or room service since you can't get a reservation anywhere else. Did they even talk to guests before making this catastrophic change? They did not encourage us to give feedback. Surprisingly, they asked us to leave a review here, on CruiseCritic. Service is still in training, so it's a real mixed bag. While they've taken management off other ships, many others are new to their jobs. Cruise the fjord for a few hours beginning at 9am and not offer coffee and biscuits in the observation lounge? Leave port into the sunset at 5:45 and don't serve drinks at 5:55 because it's not 6:00 yet? No lunch buffets on deck on at-sea days? No regional cuisine? Onions and peppers the only vegetables in many dishes? These examples show the complete lack of flexibility from the set rules, which give the impression of cost-cutting at every opportunity. You can't expect guests on a 2-week+ cruise, even if they do plan months ahead and get reservations, to eat from the same menu every single night and every single day, 3 meals a day. And yet, the Silver Muse tries to make you happy about it. We met others who had booked back-to-back legs and were still eating from the same exact menus a month later. Silversea says they're planning on fixing the food and restaurant issues, but until we hear that actually happen, there's no way we'd cruise this ship again. We just got an email this week that said they were planning to do the same thing on the other ships. On the positive side, the Silver Muse is stable and the basic food quality is good. But give us the old Shadow, the Wind and the Whisper any day. Even the expedition ships are a better value. But maybe Silversea is moving away from the grand days of luxury cruising now, trying to be "modern." There are plenty of low- and mid-market "modern" cruise ships that offer better value. Silversea should be careful not to lose their loyal passengers. Read Less

A couple so-so ports like Sydney Canada (try and avoid) and western Canada is much more beautiful but still very nice. Loved the French island of St Pierre. My comment to take or leave; the food is great in all the restaurants but they have raised the premium restaurants (La Dame and Keiseke) to $60 per person. For that you get nothing better than in the others. Food not better, service definitely not better, wine not better...what's the point for $120 extra. Try them if you like. Premium restaurant Champagne was $40 each a year and a half ago and you got a glass of Dom Perignan when you sat down. Not sure what their thinking is. You can get lobster and fois gras in other restaurants so...? Never went to a show, 10 minutes with an OK singer, so cannot comment on those activities. Could use more games on sea days. Read Less

We have 300 nights on Silversea and usually love the experience they have to offer. We are well known to the staff, whom we love. This time, we sailed for 28 nights from Lisbon to Montreal in September 2017, six months after the launch of the ship (plenty of time to work out the kinks). Unfortunately, the Silver Muse did not provide any luxury despite the hype in the brochures and the extreme friendliness of the waiters. I had to wear ear plugs at night when the sea was even a bit rough because the ceiling creaked so loudly and the balcony door banged. The sewer-gas smell in our otherwise very nice bathroom was off-putting to say the least. It did get fixed. There seemed to be no professional chefs on board and no one in charge of the restaurants. We've had better food and better organized service in hospital cafeterias and retirement residences. We quickly memorized the menus that never varied, and we got tired of the meals being served somewhere between room temperature and lukewarm. In the Terrazza buffet, the pasta chef was sullen, his pasta often incompletely cooked (crunchy, not al dente) and covered in stone cold sauce. They never turned on the radiant food warmers in the Terrazza, so that the scrambled eggs, home-fry potatoes, and Asian lunch dishes (clearly made from leftovers) were barely warmer than room temperature. The soup was never hot; even when I sent it back three times, they never got it hot -- I was told the Terrazza kitchen was three decks down, which is why the food got cold on the way up. The service in Terrazza was friendly but disorganized; the restaurant managers were usually in hiding or chuckling in a corner with the head waiters; the chefs never made an appearance to check on the quality of their dishes, so they had no idea of the inferior results sitting on our plates. One head waiter was outstanding; she was the only one to actually supervise and pitch in when necessary; her name is Eileen. The officers rarely ate in any of the restaurants, and now I can see why; they probably got much better fare in their officers' mess. Atlantide, the premier complementary restaurant, served the same boring food every night: a hunk of fried fish or fried meat on a cold plate served with a few tasteless, boiled vegetables. No variation, art, creativity or skill went into any of the meals. Almost anyone can boil up a few veggies, throw a piece of meat on a grill, and then toss the lot onto a cold plate. But this was supposed to be six-star luxury. There were two nice appetizer dishes; but having the same things over and over got very frustrating and tiring. La Dame, the $120-for-two restaurant had terrible seating (you stared at either the wall or the wine rack), indifferent service, and pretentiously described food that was not served hot and was not as tasty as we can make for ourselves at home. The entertainers (Chantal and Esther) in the Silver Note supper club were lovely but the food was just plain weird. How can a bowl of rice mixed with quinoa, served dry and on its own, be classified as a appetizer? The tough lobster on mashed potatoes, served lukewarm, was edible but not exactly gourmet. We love Asian food, but the Asian Indochine restaurant produced nothing tasty or authentic. Our local takeaway Thai and Indian places serve much better fare. The Arts Cafe, run by Jason and staffed by the delightful Jhowel, Paulo, Richard, and Juan, was the dining highlight for us. Afternoon tea was served at four from proper tea pots with perfect scones along with real clotted cream and jam. Whoever made the scones really knows how to bake a scone (that person needs to teach the other bakers how to make American muffins and pancakes that are not a wet mass of partially cooked dough.) Jimmy and Luke were the terrific cruise director and his assistant. They added greatly to our enjoyment of the cruise and we felt very lucky to have them. Jimmy does a wonderful Team-Trivia and Luke an excellent Name-that-Tune. Both are warm and welcoming to the guests on a individual basis. Sad to say, we will never sail again on the Silver Muse. And before sailing on any Silversea ship again, we will need to find out whether all the ships have adopted the disastrous idea of the unvarying menu. Read Less

My wife and I were excited to try the newest ship in the fleet. Overall a very solid experience, however there are a few changes that are unwelcome. Pluses: Excellent internet speed. We purchased the full cruise high speed package, and never had an issue with speed or connectivity. We used it for both work emails and daily posts to Facebook with pictures and commentary on our fantastic experiences. We truly enjoyed the shore excursions, more than we had on previous Silversea cruises (we have become "Silversea only" cruisers since 2004, and this was our fifth). While our meals in La Terrazza and La Dame were consistently excellent, we found Atlantide to be just "good". We miss the open seating policy of the Restaurant. Every night required reservations, however the maitre'd in both La Terraza and Atlantide were always able to get us in where we wanted. We would skip Seishin and Indochine next time, and focus only on La Terraza, Hot Rocks, Atlantide and La Dame. The spa was not fully ready for us, as the lockers lacked hangers so our clothes ended up piled on the bottom. A good massage though. While we prefer the other ships and their open seating in The Restaurant, the overall execution of the new ship is excellent. Shows were well done, and seating very comfortable. We enjoyed the art work as well. As a bonus, we met a lovely couple from Shropshire, England with whom we plan to travel again. Silversea passengers are wonderful overall. Read Less
