ship needs revamp. dining ok if you like a curry or high fat foods.Entertainment .poor. The only good thing about this cruise were the bar and waiting staff and the ports of call . Only ate in main restaurant four times as was put off by the chicken drumsticks chips and gravy, hardly a la carte. Buffet curry eggs and onion rice for breakfast or full English dripping in fat. cruised many times before and have never had to leave a bad review .you need a new cruise director as his vision of good entertainment is perhaps suited for an old peoples home at best.Kids club was a joke and they wanted $25 to ice a cake where as on all other cruises this would have been free . We spent in total £9000.00 on this holiday for two adults and two children paid for a la carte got chicken drumsticks paid for our children to be entertained did not happen, paid for great entertainment was not entertained Read Less

We chose our cruise mostly for the port destinations and because family were already booked. We were really impressed by space in our mini-suite cabin and the club-class dining exceeded our expectations. Didn't go to any speciality dining venues because we had everything we needed including lobster, steak and baked alaska! Nothing was too much trouble for our waiting staff and they anticipated every need - remembering personal preferences. Wine list was good with a good selection of bottles starting at about $37. Entertainment was of a very high standard with stars from the west end. Elevator roulette is not to be missed! Scavenger hunt was frantic but great fun. The only downside was the excessive cost of princess shore excursions. Local options are invariably a better bet. Tip - always remove automatic gratuities and reward special staff individually. Embarkation and disembarking were a breeze. Would happily return onboard - in fact, cannot wait! Read Less

Choose this cruise due to the ports of call offered by Princess in South East Asia. Overall we were very satisfied with this cruise. In fact we completed two back to back 10 day cruises which covered different ports of call. A couple ports of call had 2 to 3 hours of driving to the main City attractions which took a lot of time away from actually seeing attractions. Princess should allow more time in port or overnight to be able to spend enough time at attractions. Two different ports only allowed about 2-1/2 to 3 hours before having to drive back to cruise ship. We usually love the entertainment on board Princess cruises except both of these cruises had mostly singers as their main attraction and only 1 comedian over the 20 day cruise experience and two acrobatic performances which both were great. There were no ventriloquists, illusionist or Hypnotists etc. to give some variety to the show offerings. A second comedian would have been a nice since this cruise was 20 days long. Meal quality at the main dinning room varied. We were not pleased with any of the steaks offered in the dining room. You have to pay extra to get better quality steaks in the main dining room which we did not want to do. This was new to Princess other than going to a specialty dining room. Other dishes were very good though and the deserts great as always. Service in the dining room was top notch. We had several excellent waiters & waitresses which always adds to the dining experience. Rooms are not large but the most annoying aspect is the Showers are way too small. The cold water coming out of the tap is not cold and was very warm probably due to the water desalination systems that use sea water. The Ocean temp. was in the Mid 80's. and they do not cool the water very much after purifying it. Read Less

I wanted to cruise the Mediterranean thru the Gibralter strait. Sapphire Princess is a wonderful ship, one of the Grand class- which we have liked the most of the many ships we have been on. this class is set up with most of the entertainmenton deck seven. On Sapphire and Ruby -three beautiful well maintained dance floors. Kudos for bringing us singer Peter Howarth and the band "Atomic" both were awesome. Atomic is the best lounge band ever on a cruise ship. The stage band was excellent too. We did not enjoy the other stage shows - we have seen beatles tribute bands many times before, and unfortunately the ships stage performers were well below par. We are dancers and really appreciate the recorded ballroom music offered. The buffet was good for breakfast, dining room, not. the dining room was good for dinner, the buffet, not Most of the staff were very helpful and pleasant. Read Less

Food The sapphire has one main dining restaurant, The International Restaurant for traditional dining and three anytime dining restaurants. The Pacific Moon, The Vivaldi, and The Savoy. There is also The Santa Fe for Club Class. Horizon court is the buffet restaurant and the ship has other eateries such as trident grill, prego pizzeria and international cafe, which are fast food style places. There is an ice cream bar and a sit down Alfredo’s Pizzeira too.i can’t fault the food anywhere on board ship. Can feed myself 24/7 with quality, tasty food. Cabins We had an inside cabin and my fiancé expected to feel claustrophobic. This didn’t happen. We were happy with a steward, William who we didn’t see much of, but he cleaned twice a day, leaving little chocolates on our pillows in the evening. It was a warm cosy feel with the lamps on. We had on demand movies to watch after our evening round he ship too. Bed was so comfy and didn’t take long to drift off. Good wardrobe area to store plenty and tea and coffee were available in the cabins too. Amenities Gym and studio were over looking the sea. There was a free sauna and steam room in the changing rooms and a thermal suite to use for a hefty charge. This was near he adults only pool and jacuzzis. This area was called The Sanctuary and wasn’t really used. Just the gym really. There was a small library and on deck games. Entertainment Plenty of entertainment going on in bars and the main piazza(music, champagne waterfall, sail home party) It was the real hub of the ship and never quiet. Bars, restaurants, shops and events always happening here. I thought the production shows were just okay. Maybe just not my cup of tea. The comedian and the soprano were good. Ports of call. Exactly what we wanted. Zeebrugge, Copenhagen, Skagen and Oslo. Enough time in each port and then two days at sea. Ship as a whole The ship gets a 5/5. For those of you that see negative reviews on here, ignore them. I genuinely don’t get what hey are after. It was a high standard from start to finish. The ship is not worn which some reviews suggest(someone even complained a free gift she was given. Thing some people go on holiday to complain. It’s crazy). Concentrate on the positive reviews as they clearly aren’t looking for faults. Everyone we spoke to onboard didn’t have a bad word to say about the ship and it’s staff. And we would happily set sail on her again if the itinerary suited us. The only downfall we had is that we couldn’t stop longer! Read Less

I had originally booked this cruise on the basis that England would have exited the world cup by the time the ship departed from Southampton so it was with some reluctance that I boarded the boat on the day of the quarter final with Sweden in the middle of the summer heatwave. The check-in was swift and efficient however we were the last people to board as we had been delayed on the M25 - the porters could have been a bit more helpful. The bags were quickly sent onboard - in fact they were there waiting for us when we got to our cabin. This was my first time cruise with Princess having travelled with Royal Caribbean, Disney and P&O previously and they compared favourably. I would say that the food is infinitely better and the entertainment comparable. However I would not bother with the supplementary restaurants - we tried Sabatini and I have to say that the food in the MDR was just as good if not better. This was a slightly older cruising crowd perhaps because the school holidays had not officially started. The crowd as a good mixture of Brits, Americans and Australians. To cater for the diverse audience, there were Twinnings English Breakfast teabags and an English and American style breakfast meaning proper bacon, sausages but also American style French toast (try it in the breakfast or lunch restaurant - James Beard's recipe). Children are well catered for with 2 separate clubs set up. My main gripes were the costs of the Princess excursions and the cost for the shuttle services - where possible just get an uber or taxi. However the ports were all excellent including the direct sailing into Stockholm city rather than the commuter town. We didn't bother with the train trip to Berlin as it is probably cheaper and quicker for us to fly from London. The Rostock and Warnemunde towns were delightful places to visit and we didn't even bother venturing out to Schwerin even though we had plenty of time. Top tip - head to the swimming pool at the front of the ship in the Sanctuary. Not many people know that it is there and for general public use unlike the Sanctuary itself (which incurs and additional surcharge). Read Less

The food was of the highest order. Embarkation and disembarkation was quick and painless. The staff were all lovely. I didn’t do any trips. The non theatre entertainment was fun with guitarist singers quizzes. Gareth gates did a show! He was excellent. The in room entertainment was comprehensive with films and tv series. The cabin didn’t have a sofa , which was no loss to us. A huge walk in wardrobe space, I’ve never had so much room. The cabin attendant was invisible, but the room was always tidied in between our visits. He had a great name of Bambang. He did an excellent job. The waitress Pra-on did a splendid job in international dining room. I can’t recommend highly enough. Read Less

We had a desire to visit South east Asia and we felt that a good offer was made price wise for the cruise and 3 extra nights in Singapore, which is wonderful. The inside room was not very large but it was clean and the attendant was good. Food in the restaurants was nearly always good although not a large selection if you do not like seafood and the service was excellent. Happily our 8 person table was filled most nights. The self service was OK with a wider selection but no ambience. Entertainment as expected but little imagination during the day so the seadays were somewhat boring. Booked excursions via the boat to KL, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok as they were so far away and they were well organised but crowded. The rest we got off, booked taxis and had a magnificent time. Malaysia is about £10 per hour for 4 people, Viet Nam /Cambodia £15 and Thailand a bit more so do not waste your money on the excursions in Penang, Langkawi, Sabah, Ko Samui etc.and do not pay $16 each for the transfers. Put it towards the taxi and have 4 hours out in the countryside. Just ensure they speak English. Read Less

Have sailed on 3 Princess cruises. This cruise was a disappointment. Very disorganized. Ship needs updated. Tender disembarkation a nightmare. Internet access very bad. Dinner menu very uninteresting. My husband ordered the Alfredo from the nightly available items 4 times! All meat except the tenderloin, very tough. Our room steward not accessible. Never answered 3 o f our pages. Never received bag tags for disembarkation. Didn't deliver passports in a timely fashion at end of cruise. We also used Princess air for airplane reservations and this was also a nightmare. Too much to go into here. The ship to airport transfer dropped us early in the morning and we were stuck with all our luggage until 3:30 pm because airline didn't open check in until then, Spent a day in Singapore prior to boarding. Very lovely place, worth seeing. Would not take this cruise again. Kota Kinabalu port not worth the time. Needed more time in Saigon and Bangkok. 2 1/2 hours from port to city is ridiculous. It seemed like Princess just tried to fill port time with anything it could find. Could skip half of these ports. Read Less

Having sailed with several other cruise lines, I have to say that the service we received from every single member of the Princess team was first class. Better than we have ever experienced from any other company. That said, there are a few areas where Princess really let themselves down on this trip. The Sapphire is due for a complete refurbishment in the next couple of months so it was no surprise that it is looking a little tired. However, I didn't like the fact that they started doing maintenance work during our trip. There were a couple of areas of the buffet restaurant roped off while something was being done to some large cabinets, right by the entrance. They also did some painting on the top deck without putting any 'wet paint' signs up. We found this out when my wife happened to get paint on a brand new top she was wearing. Although an attempt to dry clean (free of charge) was made, the top was ruined and came back in worse condition. Sanding and varnishing work was also being done on some hand rails around the swimming pool, with guests in very close proximity. Other things that were not so good - The Captain was almost anonymous. The only time we saw him was when he made a very brief welcome speech. He was not seen by any of our party walking the decks or otherwise socialising with the guests. The only time we heard from him was when he announced an itinerary change caused by bad weather. None of the bars stocked slim line tonic water and the Horizon buffet restaurant was perhaps the poorest of its type that I have experienced in a dozen cruises. Apart from Horizon (the buffet restaurant), the restaurant food was of a good standard with plenty of choice most nights. We did try both the speciality restaurants during the cruise, with very different results. Sabatinis was excellent throughout. Great service and fantastic food. The Steakhouse however turned out to be a curtained off section of the Horizon Buffet. The curtains did not stop other guests walking through throughout the meal. We even had one person walk through in their pyjamas! This totally destroyed any ambiance, it was difficult to relax and worst of all, of the six main courses our party had, we had to send two of them back. I would mention two members of the entertainment staff. Ted, the Cruise Director and Amy, the Assistant Cruise Director. Ted is a lovely guy and clearly very intelligent, however, he is in need of a new script. His repertoire when speaking on stage is very unimpressive. "Give me an oooh" and Give me an aaah" does not go down well with a mainly adult audience, a significant percentage of which do not have English as their first language. And as for his jokes - I have never witnessed so many tumbleweed moments. On the other hand, Amy Alderson was a pleasure to know. She made every effort to get to know our group and was absolutely charming. A credit to Princess, I am sure a promotion will not be too far away, she deserves it and I am willing to bet that she tells a better joke than Ted. There were two very talented violinists playing each evening in the atrium. We certainly enjoyed their music, but would it have hurt them to smile occasionally? All performances in the theatre were of a very high standard. The dance troupe were excellent and the visiting artists all very entertaining. Especially David Knight, the Hypnotist. Our stateroom with balcony was comfortable, although I am sure that the shower was shrinking throughout the trip. There was certainly less room in it at the end than there was at the beginning. Perhaps it was me getting bigger!! Adrian, our Stateroom attendant was excellent, very helpful, always smiling and always in the background if we needed him. I did like the idea of the ship holding onto our passports throughout the cruise. They looked after most of the immigration issues, which made getting on and off the boat at all the different locations much easier. However, the issue with Cambodia and visa requirements was very poorly communicated prior to the cruise. This resulted in us spending more on a visa than we needed to, because we had unnecessarily sorted it out before leaving the UK. We only went on one excursion organised by Princess and that was in Borneo, to the Mari Mari museum. Excellent and would recommend. All the other excursions were organised by the company we booked the cruise through. The gym was very busy most mornings, so you need to pick your timings. There was a lack of cycle machines compared to cross trainers, but all equipment was in good condition All in all, a terrific holiday in which the staff of Princess contributed significantly to our enjoyment, for which I thank them. We chose this cruise because , as Elite members, there are very few locations we have not visited before and this Cruise offered a few new ones. Unfortunately, a lot of the ports were several minutes from the ship and, more so, were several hours from major centres. We did take a couple of the ship’s tours but generally stayed within an hour’s distance of the ship. We enjoyed the ship itself. Because we were travelling over New Year’s the decorations were extra nice. We were also celebrating our 50 th wedding anniversary and Sapphire had balloons ready for us and a dessert on our day of choice. The meals were delicious, as usual. Service was always great. Even the medical centre was very welcoming and followed through. Dr Lynn Smith was particularly kind and efficient. The maître d’hôtel, François, went out of his way to recompense us for a minor dining room incident. A highlight for us is always the Port Lectures and Debbie was phenomenal with her clear voice and very valuable information. We had no children or grandchildren with us, but the Sapphire offered all kinds of activities and the teens we saw around the ship seemed very busy and happy. The daily Patter, Sudoku, and quizzes are a welcome staple. The library and its contents, however, are very minimal, particularly for a ship of this size. Evening entertainment was very good, and bravo for having a couple of new acts. Mauricio had a huge following and could have been given a larger venue so that people could dance to his music. I found there was very little to buy on this cruise. The jewelry seemed to be limited to Effy, the clothing to Joseph Ripkoff. I have previously bought necklaces, earrings and sportswear, especially on the big sale days, which was non-existent this time. My total bill was $20 for 2 sets of “upgraded” free earrings and pendants from Effy. We love playing Bridge while on board but this time , the hours conflicted with the Art Auctions as well as Debbie's lectures. All in all, a very relaxing Cruise. Read Less

We had pre-booked an excursion to visit Lok Kawi Wildlife park in Borneo as we wanted to see orangutans up close. The day before our visit the ship broke down mid-ocean from a mechanical problems involving the propulsion system causing us to drift aimlessly for 7 hours before the repair was completed. In consequence we arrived late into port and we were informed half of the excursion had been cancelled leaving only a small amount of time that could be spent at the main attraction. Many passengers refused to go and were refunded the total cost. The Wildlife Park turned out to be no more than a private zoo. The majority of the animals were clearly kept in an extremely distressed state and in particular elephants were seen rolling from rear to front legs continuously A tiger was seen to be walking round and round in total frustration. Our visit lasted a mere 55 minutes during which time it was impossible to see all the animals and we left totally disillusioned with an extremely depressing visit. Complaints made on the ship resulted in firstly a 20% refund followed later by 35% of what was less than half the expected tour. The staff were disinterested in our complaints and instead referred us to UK Customer Relations. A written complaint was answered by a Ms Mills who clearly had all the facts wrong as she blamed the late arrival on weather conditions and not the ship breaking down. She refused to increase the refund and it was clear she had not read the original complaint. She stated we had enjoyed other excursions, which was wrong as nothing had been mentioned. The cruise itself was well below expectations with the quality and quantity of food being the major complaints. On 2 evenings we were left feeling unfulfilled and had to retreat to the self-service restaurant for more food. 3 evenings had belly pork on the menu, meat that we would not touch in a thousand years and on another lamb shank was so tough it was disgusting. A beef steak was like leather and so tough it could not be eaten. We walked out of 3 evening performances in the theatre.2 were the ship'sown production shows where singing and dancing was the worst we have ever seen. Having cruised over 30 times with other companies I cannot recommend Princess Cruises and will not re-book with them in future. Read Less

A recent Princess cruise in December took us to Singapore, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand, sailing on the Sapphire. We knew beforehand that this is now an old ship, but it has weathered well, and apart from a few marks of wear and tear it is well preserved. Overall we found it to be well maintained, with scrupulous attention to cleanliness and hygiene. Embarkation on the first day in Singapore was chaotic, mainly because there were two sets of travelers mingled together, one for Princess and the other for Royal Caribbean. No one knew where to go or what queue to join. A simple barricade down the centre of the great hall separating the two sets of travelers would have improved matters greatly. In contrast, disembarkation on the last day was perfectly organised, and trouble free. The central piazzo of the ship was beautiful, cheerfully decorated for Christmas, and our veranda cabin comfortable, with unusually good storage space, and an exceptionally comfortable bed. There was one cabin feature that we did not like. Leaning on our balcony rail and looking downward, we did not look down in to the sea. Instead we looked directly down into balconies of the decks below us. These were tiered and jutting out, so that their privacy was directly compromised by us peering in to them from above. There was the usual program of social events and entertainments, with lots of music throughout the ship. The main theatre was large, comfortable, and well designed, and the dance/music performances by the Sapphire Song and Dance Company offered some of the best programmes of this type that we have ever seen. Unfortunately, right from the beginning Princess managed to convey the impression that it was out to extract the last cent that it could from its customers. A bottle of water at $3.95 was the first thing we saw on entering our cabin, a nice glass of orange juice was served at breakfast, but the same glass at lunch was charged extra, the free coffee supplied was awful, and to get a decent coffee one had to buy it at the coffee counter, the internet café was beautiful but downloading could be very slow so that one's expensively purchased minutes were eaten up quickly. A bargain 'happy hour' for cocktails usually means 'buy one and get a second one free'. In the Sapphire you could 'buy one and get a second one for a dollar'. Finally, and this really annoyed us, the nicest lounge in the ship, the one with big curved windows facing forward, was fenced off, called the Sanctuary, and only available for an extra $40 a day. A major disappointment was the food. The dining halls were nice and the service impeccable, but what was dressed up on the menu as creative and appetising, turned out to be very ordinary on the plate. Unchewable lumps of meat in a sweet and sour pork, a rock-like mousse straight out of the freezer, a hamburger dish not as tasty as what one could get in MacDonalds, lumps of melon as hard as turnips, and so on. In contrast, the wine menu in the restaurants was very good, offering a fine selection of excellent wines, priced very reasonably. Overall we enjoyed our cruise, but the food in particular would put us off choosing Princess for our next trip. We realise that our comments are subjective, and we noted on board many passengers who had several Princess cruises behind them. Nevertheless our comments reflect what we thought about this our first time with Princess. Read Less

Princess has always been one of those cruise ships i had previously heard was amazing. This was not what I encountered. We were a party of 8 including two children. When we first walked onto the boat we noticed that it looked dated, old, it needed some TLC. After a few days into our 15 day cruise, there was rain. I noticed that common areas had roofs leaking and places to eat had wet floors. We went to eat at gala night and my two year old was served raw chicken nuggets, when it was sent back it came back too hard to cut with a knife. I quickly lost faith in serving chicken nuggets to my child. I wanted to relax and booked a 200 dollar massage, hoping that it was worth the price i was disappointed. I filled out a form asking what areas I would like to be focused on and my massage therapist did not speak english well so i verbally asked her to focus on my neck, feet and lower back. These areas where all avoided. For 75 minutes the table that I was placed on had no hole to place your face in. There was a bar that caused me pain on my nose and back when facing down for the massage. I quickly informed the massage therapist that I was in pain, and she said,"Sorry." I came out in more pain then when i arrived. I informed the manager who informed me that she would investigate. At this point, she should have reimbursed me but didn't. I called her back for two days until I was told I would get another massage. I was informed by my massage therapist that this is the type of table they have for massages with the exception of just one table with a hole in it. She informed me that this has been a problem in the past. Gym- I enjoy working out at 5am it starts my day but on this cruise the gym did not open until 7am. The problem many of us had was that excursions started at 6:45 -7:15am, no time to workout before breakfast. When returning from an all day excursion that return at 5:30pm, we were hungry because the food on most excursion was disgusting and we just wanted to return to eat. Excursions- we took 9 excursions out of 9 only 1 place had an amazing place to eat which was a resort. Some of the places the princess excursion company took us for a bathroom breaks had urine on the floor and on the seat with no toilet paper. Thankfully i always bring paper and on several occasions shared with my fellow cruise travelers. On our last port in Thailand, the boat that takes us from our cruise ship to main land and back had a very difficult time connecting to the ship on the way back. The boat attempted several times and we waited on the boat for over one hour, plus another 40 minutes in line trying to get on the boat to take us to our ship. Many people needed to go to the bathroom, it was hot and many people were drinking a lot of water. I did see some people have accidents, not sure why but it was scary floating in a boat that rocked and not knowing if we were going to get on our cruise boat. Speciality restaurants- we wanted to try the Crab Shack which serves seafood for an additional 29 dollars per person, the food was not worth the price. There was better tasting food at the horizon buffet. Food- the horizon buffet served good food, the only problem was that the menu changed everyday, that if there was something you truly enjoyed that was the last time you would have it in 15 days. Many people got sick on the cruise with influenza symptoms. Thankfully we did not get sick until 10 days into our cruise. I stayed in my cabin the entire time, not wanting to infect others. Unfortunately, I wanted soup and hot water with honey and lemon, but they only had one type of soup for delivery which was egg drop soup. My family loves cruising, we have been on other cruise lines, after this experience we are 90% hesitant about booking with princess again. We have not received a call from princess apologizing or attempting to make things right. I did speak to other elite members on the cruise and they informed me that they were highly embarrassed and disappointed on sapphire. They had never experience anything like this, but urged us to try the cruise line some other time. Read Less
