We have also signed on with El Pedral for their penguin tour.  I have read some reviews and it looks like an enjoyable day.  It is my understanding that we can pay on the day of the tour.  I think we are set on every port except for Montivideo.  If I find something good I will post here.

This is the first I've ever heard of this, 'cruisemama5'.  I do not remember anything like this on our cruise 9 years ago to Antarctica (yes, a long time ago and things do change); I even took the liberty of asking on a friend's live blog of the current Grand South American cruise on Prinsendam, where if HAL did this sort of thing you might expect it for this cruise, and have gotten negative answers; no outerwear provided by HAL.  Also, nothing of the sort was offered last fall on Zaandam but that cruise did not go to Antarctica, only around the horn.

I think they were confusing Holland America with the expedition ships with Zodiacs.  Most, if not all those trips include a free parka.

I also contacted El Pedral and have booked with them.  This is a small group excursion which includes penguins and is much closer than the Punta Tombo.  You  can find information about it at https://www.reservaelpedral.com/en/full-day-trip-for-cruisers/ and also on Mary's blog at https://mysouvenirmemories.blogspot.com/2019/02/puerto-madryn-argentina.html#comment-form.   I filled out the info at "Contact us" and Lara got back to me by email.   You can pay in cash ($120pp) on the day or by credit card with a supplied link.

I contacted Mary @ My Souvenir Memories and she said she would recommend this excursion.  We have made a reservation for us, we would be thrilled if any of your would join us!

For Punta Arenas, at this time, I am thinking we are going to "do our own thing".  I have heard there is a decent museum with re-productions of Magellan's ships.  As a sailor and former history teacher, I would like to take a taxi and visit them.  We may stop in a local pub for lunch and just wander around the town.  Not really sure, yet.

I did contact El Pedra.  I believe they responded that our port time did not match up with their tour time.  I am considering going to Punta Tombo, although I am told it is a very long ride, and another long walk once you get there.  We have scheduled a penguin tour in the Falklands, and if we get to do it, that would be enough for us.  I don't know what else there is to do there if you don't do a long bus ride.
