Viking Helgrim is a "baby Longship," shorter in length and carrying fewer passengers than the regular Longship fleet. The changes are to accommodate sailings on Portugal's Douro River, known for its olives, olive oil, almonds and wines. Viking Helgrim will join sister ships Viking Hemming, Viking Torgil and Viking Osfrid on the Douro.
The ship's "green" elements include hybrid engines that burn less fuel and cause less vibration. The engines get their solar power from panels on the Sun Deck. There is also an organic garden on the Upper Deck.
Viking Helgrim has the same airy, light-filled feel and clean, modern lines as its sister ships. Muted Portuguese tile is also used throughout.
All of the Longships and baby Longships are named for figures in Norse mythology and history. Helgrim co-led the first recorded trip from Norway to England, delivering the British king a Norwegian-built ship.
Viking Helgrim has two dining options: the main restaurant and Aquavit Terrace. Complimentary bottled water, cappuccino, coffee and tea are available at the 24-hour beverage bar.
The main restaurant has floor-to-ceiling windows that allow passengers to sightsee as they dine on regional specialties and other cuisine.
Breakfast is offered buffet-style. Lunch features a selection of entrees, as well as a buffet. Dinner is a five–course meal. Lunch and dinner are served with complimentary wine, beer and spirits. Additional premium wines and spirits can be purchased. No reservations are required, and dress at all meals is casual.
The Aquavit Terrace is an indoor/outdoor lounge offering drinks and light bites. Hours vary by cruise.
Each of Viking Helgrim's 53 staterooms have river views.
All staterooms and suites can be configured as a queen bed or two twins. All have a telephone, safe, hair dryer, personal climate controls and a 40-inch flat-screen TV with movies on demand and other channel options. Bathrooms have showers and premium bath products: a bathrobe and slippers are available upon request. Bottled water is provided in-room daily.
Viking Helgrim's cabins fall into the following categories:
Veranda Suite: These true suites are 302 square feet and have separate sleeping and sitting quarters with a 40-inch flat-screen TV in each. Suites also have a full veranda and a French balcony off the bedroom. They are located on the Upper and Middle Decks.
Veranda Stateroom: These cabins are 185 square feet and have flood-to-ceiling sliding-glass doors that open to a full-size veranda.
French Balcony: These cabins are 150 square feet and have floor-to-ceiling windows that open for a French balcony effect. There is a French balcony cabin on the Upper Deck and another on the Middle Deck.
Standard Stateroom: These staterooms are 155 square feet and have half-height picture windows. They are clustered on the main deck.
The ship's top deck features a pool, outdoor dining area, putting green and a variety of loungers and tables -- both in the shade and not.
At least one daily shore excursion is available as part of the fare, and passengers can also choose to pay for more specialized options. There is a library and free Wi-Fi onboard. Cultural programming is offered at night or when the ship is sailing during the day.
There are no facilities or programs for children. Minimum sailing age is 18.
Viking Helgrim sails 10-day excursions on the Douro River between Lisbon and Porto.
