Wanted to cruise the Mexican Riviera with our best friends. Thought Princess was supposed to be a good line. Nothing special about it. The food was not very good , even the food in the pay extra restaurants. The room was very small and lacked any color or attractivenes and it was classified as a Deluxe Balcony Stateroom. We wont be sailing with Princess again. There are too many better choices... Royal Caribbian, NCL, Disney, Oceana, Holland America.
The best thing about this cruise was how great our room steward was.
As far as the itinerary, Puerto Vallarta was the best, lots to see and do. Though Cabo is a nice place to spend a few days (have done that in the past) I dont think it was worth the hastle of going ashore.
The other thing that was a surprise is that the "Stuff" they served as ice cream was NOT... it was watery and tasteless.
And lastly, finding seating at the buffets was always a challenge.
Needlless to say we have no plans to sail with Princess again. Read Less

Never having sailed on Princess our good friends suggested that we join them on the Royal for a 7 day sail to the Mexican Riviera departing April 27, 2019. They entrusted us to do the booking and manage excursions and upgraded dining. We proceeded with 2 deluxe balcony staterooms side by side so we could hang out on the balconies together when we wished. We prepaid our gratuities and our excursions and began our count down (about 80 days from finalizing our purchases). With just 4 weeks until blast off Princess called and offered us an upgrade for about $350 for my wife and I and $350 for our friends. (we did not use any TA's so we dealt directly with Princess) Big mistake on my part as I assumed that all the extra amenities hyped up on the Princess website for mini-suite cabins would apply to us. I called our friends and read them all the extra goodies and they wanted to upgrade as did we. Not being a TA and not originally looking to book a mini suite, I had no idea that princess had 2 types of mini-suites. The "CLUB" mini suites had all the goodies, whereas our extra $350 boiled down to an extra TV and more bathroom space. This way we could watch 2 tv's at once, one for each eye. lol Once onboard we went to the suite concierge, Francisco Galvan and to my embarrassment discovered the phone scam upgrade. Did the Princess rep tell me about the difference in the club mini and a regular mini? HELL NO! If she did we never would have upgraded and encouraged our friends to upgrade. Ok I know that not using an agent was dumb on my part, however for Princess to upgrade us over the phone without a proper description of the upgrade is on them. Funny thing is that once we left the concierge a mysterious posting was made on our private Princess dossier that we were briefed by the Princess sales department on the benefits of a mini suite. This of course was totally bogus as the concierge knew that we were going to take our problem either to the Hotel Manager or the Guest Relations Manager. Someone made this entry in an attempt to cover their rear end. I would swear under oath that they never advised us of the difference in a club or a mini suite. Why would anyone upgrade for just an extra tv and and about 10 more square feet? They wouldn't of course. Not me at least. Ok, enough of this and thanks for allowing me to vent. During the cruise I did get a private meeting with the guest relations manager, Luca Cozzolino to discuss this issue. Mr. Cozzolino handled the situation professionally and to my satisfaction and that of my wife and friends. As they said once in a great movie "What we have here is a failure to communicate".
Our impressions regarding the Royal Princess cuisine was somewhat a mixed bag. The dishes in the main dining room were quite average at best with the amazing exception of the lobster served on the second formal night. We all thought it was the very best we ever enjoyed on a cruise. Sailing in the warm waters of the Sea of Cortez , we all had hoped that the shrimp cocktails would feature the famous jumbo delicacies. Nope! We all had a great laugh when the waiter delivered us 4 tiny shrimp that measured under 2 inches. This pennywise and pound foolish chef selection was made by a bean counter that has no idea of how to make a customer feel he picked the right cruise line. Same can be said about the grade of ice cream on the dessert menu. Based on an old fashioned taste test the Royal buys bargain ice milk in lieu of premium grades. Great way to top off a mediocre dinner is with a scoop or two of drug store ice cream.
The service that we had in the main dining room was absolutely spectacular. From the busboy to the maitre'd all worked their tails off to please us and several nearby tables. You can tolerate food that's mediocre if your servers are bending over backwards to please you. These folks and your cabin attendant can make or break a cruise vacation. Princess seems to have this part of cruising down to a science.
Room service food was pretty sad although we didn't use it much. The much hyped "BEST PIZZA AT SEA" failed to mention the they only make 3 pizzas a day available for room service. The $3 charge is no big deal but we had been craving a Hawaiian pizza only to find out that only cheese, pepperoni and margarita was available. We went with pepperoni and couldn't finish a slice. Again things were hit and miss. The difference between the Celebrity buffets and those aboard Princess are night and day. Almost impossible feeding 3000 to 4000 people with exciting fresh food and snacks on the Royal, Our Solstice Alaskan cruise recently amplified the many awards Celebrity has garnered for dining. Of course people have various types of palettes and tastes so if you read 100 reviews about dining on Princess versus others, you will get a wide range of ratings. Our final night aboard the Royal was a highlight with dinner in the Crown Room. Wonderful window table for 4 with great food. My buddy and I tackled 22 ounce porterhouse steaks with huge baked potatoes. I am not sure how but I actually lost 2 pounds on this cruise. Maybe they did me a big favor by serving crummy ice cream? Find the gelato station because it's great. The minor $1.50 per scoop up-charge is well worth it.
One final note is that the elevator waits on the Royal can be very frustrating. Try and prepare yourself by bringing an extra bag of patience aboard. Also try and relax when you wait to embark. So many folks get all worked up into a lather waiting for their call to board. The ground personnel do a great job of getting thousands off and thousands on. Some poor souls had the all night duty of hauling 13,000 suitcases down to the warehouse to be ready by 7am. These cats are exhausted and after a short break start bringing onboard another 13,000 bags. Some people can be grotesque when awaiting to board the ship. Most passengers are asked to come at assigned times varying from Noon to 2:30 It appeared to us that the majority are ready to storm the gang planks at 10 am. Crazy! Read Less

Summary: This was the first cruise on a Royal-class ship for my wife and myself. It was our 9th Princess cruise overall and a bit of a disappointment following the spectacular Panama Canal cruse we had on the Coral Princess last November.
Positives: For the most part, service from the crew was excellent. Waiters in the dining room, restaurants and bars/lounges were very pleasant and attentive. Robert and Franco at Sabatini's were outstanding. Attendants at the Buffet could not do enough to assist. Our cabin steward, Donna, was excellent. Kory Minor, the piano player and entertainer at Crooner's, was tremendous. We had one run-in with a chauvinistic cook at the Trident Grill who was insulting to my wife. I reported this to the Front Desk, but heard nothing in reply. Otherwise, the crew was outstanding.
The Ultimate Balcony Dinner is an incredible experience. This was the second time we have done it and it will now be a staple of our Princess cruises. We did it on Monday night while we were anchored off Cabo. Not sure how well this would work if the ship were underway, might be too windy. (Our first Balcony Dinner was done the night we were anchored in the Panama Canal last November.) Our waiters were attentive and timely without being intrusive. The food was all excellent (menu attached). The setting is so romantic! By all means, try this activity. It is easily worth the $100 price.
We also loved the Super Tuscon Lunch at Sabatini's. Multiple courses all served with wonderful (and high-end) Italian Super Tuscon wines (menu attached)
Our Mini-suite was smaller than mini-suites on other Princess ships, but that did not bother us at all. The new design is better than the old one, with the removal of the large desk and TV counter between the bed and sitting areas.
Negatives: Although advertised as a “non-smoking” environment, there are many locations on the ship where the smell of smoke was irritating at best and unbearable at worst. Biggest problem area was the Casino on Deck Six, with its open ceiling to the shops on Deck Seven. Clothing and other items in the shops reeked of smoke. Also, poorly designed ventilation in the Allegro Dining Room on Deck six Aft drew in smoke from an outside smoking area. By the end of the seven night cruise, my wife's eyes were bloodshot and her throat sore and raspy. Due to this condition, we canceled a reservation to sail the Royal Princess to Alaska later this year and re-booked to the Golden Princess in 2020.
The passenger population would overwhelm ship's resources on occasions. For example, the ship has 12 main passenger elevators, the same number as on much smaller ships. In comparison, the much smaller Coral Princess (2,000 passengers vs. 3,500-plus on the Royal) has the same 12 main elevators. This led to congestion and excessive waits during peak periods, such as show times and start of dinner hours. Also, crowds would build up outside of venues before the start of activities since there was insufficient room to handle the volume of people.
Ocean Medallion has tremendous potential to be a great tool for future passengers. The functions which currently work are wonderful. But they do not work often enough. OceanCompass repeatedly crashed while trying to find my wife. I found it very frustrating to be wasting my precious vacation time attempting to debug this system. It could not even correctly locate me at times! OceanNow had limited menus. And it surprised me by charging for cocktails even though we had full beverage packages (Sip & Sail). I brought this to the attention of the Front Desk and they said I would find it in my Cruise Passage contract that drinks ordered through OceanNow would be charged. That is not acceptable. This system reminded me (a retired IT manager) of systems rushed into production before they were ready or properly tested in order to meet a management-directed schedule deadline. System quality should be the only criteria for determining system implementation. Read Less

We booked this cruise to experience of the remodel Royal Princess. We have sailed this itinerary several times, so main purpose was to enjoy the cruise. This was a Medallion ship and the embarkation was the smoothest I'm had. Just walk up to the scanner, show your passport and on you go. Also, embarkation started very early which gave us more time on the ship. The entertainment was overall one of the best I've seen. Food selection and quality was good but not exceptional, had a disappointing experience at Sabatini's. Service was great all around. The casino was disappointing. They try to put too many slot machines in a small space, leading to trouble getting in and out of the area. There was an actual cigar lounge on the ship. It was a little small and got crowded sometimes, but a comfortable place when you can get a seat. Overall the cruise experience was good. Read Less

We have taken a Princess Cruise to the Mexican Riviera six times. Have very much enjoyed The Crown Princess and The Ruby Princess but, Wow, The Royal Princess with the Medallion technology is fantastic! Having the Medallion streamlines so much and quickens the lines, waiting periods, and simplifies getting into your cabin, ordering meals and drinks, making purchases, pretty much every activity on board, and that means casino gaming is even easier, if you are so inclined.
A noticeable improvement is consideration for those traveling with wheelchairs and walkers. The entire ship is navigable and that includes The Sanctuary. Previous trips have made The Sanctuary inaccessible because there was no elevator that went up there and even worse, no bathroom. Finally, that has all changed with elevator service and a pretty large accessible restroom.
My favorite part of this trip was the fantastic Cruise Director and his team. I always think I have the best C.D. but Matt O’ Brien is in a class by himself. Funny, clever, inventive and his enthusiasm was inspirational to jump in and join whatever was going on. His team of Assistant Crew Directors has excellent hosts with many fun games and shows.

This cruise was provided by Harrah's casino. This is my 1st time to board the Royal Princess. I did my pre-boarding process on line. On the day of my departure, i still have to stay in long lines. I observed some passengers were attended first who are not on the line. The ushers/usherettes did not provide any explanation why other passengers were provided special treatment as i see that they are not handicapped or need special assistance. Upon boarding, i went to my cabin and was surprised to see a very spacious room. My sister and i stayed in room A 516 on deck 12. Our room is so clean and have lots of space for my personal items. The bed is comfortable and have a high definition TV. Jovito, our cabin crew, greeted us with a big smile and asked if we need anything. He fixed our bed 2x a day and always leave chocolates for us to enjoy before bedtime. He always make sure that we have everything we need before he retire at night. Our dining experience is also excellent. Ian Virgenes is an amazing guy. He always make sure that we are happy and satisfied with the food and his service. He is an asset to your company. We always look forward to see him during breakfast on deck 16 and dinner at Concerto dining Room. We chose this cruise to celebrate 50 years of friendship of our husbands, dating back to their Navy days in Italy. We chose this week because we figured it was not a "Spring Break" week, and the few children on board were well-behaved.
The Royal Princess met all of our expectations. It has attractive and elegant public areas. It took a day or two to figure out how to get around the ship because of the central piazza area - there are some decks where you have to go up or down in order to get from the forward to the aft part of the ship. There were about 3500 passengers on the ship, but most of the time it didn't feel crowded.
From the moment we arrived at LAX to the moment we left, we were greeted and taken care of by Princess employees. Our transfers to and from the ship and the embarkation/disembarkation process were very smooth and efficient with plenty of friendly personnel to direct passengers. Our cabin, aft-facing E-733, was smallish, but perfectly adequate, and was well-maintained by Emmanuel, our cabin steward. There was plenty of room for clothing and toiletries. If hair care is important to you, bring your own products, since there is only "shampoo-conditioner" provided. We had some trouble with the toilet not flushing occasionally, and there was some minor soot on the balcony. However, the cabin was nice and quiet, and we enjoyed the aft view. There were lots of loungers all over the ship, so it was never a problem to find a place to relax.
We chose Anytime Dining and enjoyed our meals in both of the MDRs and the Crown Grill and Alfredo's. We never had to wait for a table in the MDRs. The buffet was extensive - massive, really - with many choices. We were pleased to see so many staff members keeping the buffet clean and refreshed, and there were many servers in the buffet dining area clearing tables and serving beverages.
As far as entertainment goes, Matt O is an enthusiastic and energetic CD, and his staff members were all very fun and friendly. We played a lot of trivia games and they had a nice variety of topics. As often happens, there were either many enjoyable activities that happened at the same time, or occasionally there were no events that appealed to us. However, that was a good reason to do some reading or lounge by the pool or walk a few laps on the track. The production shows were good, if not outstanding. We particularly enjoyed the presentation by Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's assistant.
Service from every employee (stewards, bartenders, wait staff, cleaning staff, front desk) was polite and friendly.
We took shore excursions in each port, and I expect I'll be able to report on those below. In brief, we really enjoyed our half-day sailing experience in Cabo, but thought the Mazatlan City Highlights was just OK, and we couldn't really recommend the Best of Puerto Vallarta tour. The tour guides on both excursions were fine, but the PV tour included a long drive over rough roads, and we got back to the ship more than 2 hours later than we expected.
We absolutely would take another Princess Cruise - this was our third cruise with Princess. We really enjoyed it! Read Less

Took a Mexican cruise on Royal, was my 4th cruise on Princess...all I can say is OUCH! It has been 12 years since I have been on a cruise.....I LOVED (PAST TENSE) Princess until now....I am used to the smaller ships, 2600 passengers, as if that is small....but Princess really messed up the line...You cant add 1000 more passengers, ditch one pool and revamp the menu so it is like a high end buffet, and I am not talking about the Horizon cafe....I am talking main dinning room...we were told that there was a new head chef for the ship, even the employees were complaining on how bad the food was....1 less pool and 1000 more people means, you aint getting into one....PEOPLE EVERYWHERE, NO PLACE TO GO. HAD WHAT WAS AN OWNERS SUITE, WAS GREAT, BUT THAT WAS IT. The ship was busy all the time, everywhere you went... NO place to just chill without People everywhere....movies under the stars great idea except for one problem...no aft pool so PEOPLE ALWAYS THERE,, NO WAY YOU ARE GETTING INTO THE POOL...Sanctuary pool also BUSY ALL THE TIME and at night kids in the pool as well. .so many people that there are not enough elevators to get around, always always always waiting for an elevator.....and when you are in the elevators, guess what, no air conditioning in them so you are sweltering as you hit EVERY SINGLE FLOOR. As far as food the only place that the food was good was the international cafe off the Piazza. As a suite passenger in the past with Princess, we were treated like royalty..not anymore...the few perks that are offered to the suite passenger does not make up for the lack of service, did not feel any more special then the avg joe who payed ALOT less then I did....Service in the suites only area of the restaurant sucked...had to move to a different area to get mediocre service at best...THE table side special food prep, was not done table side and it was the same every night of the cruise, was pasta with a very bitter tomato sauce.....Head waiter was an a-hole to say the least......even the specialty restaurants were mediocre......there was nothing special about the food, bad in most cases.....heard After was on ROYAL by a few different travel agents that ROYAL has a very bad reputation for most of the things I am complaining about....DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY on ROYAL, heck at this point don't waste your money on Princess.....spend the extra money and go on a true luxury cruise line. BIGGER IS NOT BETTER, no way no how! I know some of you haters are going to say some crap to me about something, so I will add this.... I had a hip replacement 2 months earlier and taking the steps was not an option.....and for the haters....go ahead..sling your best shot...I know you are all out there. I had multiple surgeries over the years, hence the reason I had waited 12 years for the trip....I deserved the suite...again haters be very careful on what you say, I have no problem coming back at you. This cruise went from Los Angeles to three ports in Mexico and back again to LA. We have taken about 25 cruises with Princess and many with other cruise lines. We have also done this itinerary many times with different cruise lines from San Francisco, San Diego and Los Angeles.
Immediately after picking up our two bags at the baggage claim area, we found the Princess representatives nearby and were told to leave our two large bags with them and follow a representative to the bus. We walked with her and were handed off to a couple of other guides during a walk of about a mile to reach the bus. Fortunately we are in fairly good health and the walk did not bother us. Some of the other passengers were having problems. Luckily it was not raining or we would have been soaking wet by the time we reached the bus. The ride to the ship took about 45 minutes. When we reached the check in area, we were escorted to the elite line and the check in process went smoothly. There we received our Medallions, which replaced the cards usually used for room keys and charging items purchased on the ship. The Medallions have other uses, but we did not explore those.
We were onboard by noon and the cabins were not yet ready, so we had lunch at the lido restaurant on Deck 16. About 1 PM they announced that the cabins were ready and we went down to unpack our carry-on bags. We had room C309 on deck 10. I had a small bath with three shelves on one side of the mirror for storage of personal items. There was a stall shower and toilet. The bath was more compact than on other ships and moving around was difficult. Outside the bath were a dressing area and a large closet between it and the sleeping area. There was also a very small closet with shelves and a safe between the bath and the larger clothes closet. The sleeping area had a queen bed, a dressing table with several drawers and two night stands. Each one had two drawers and a storage shelf. There was a reading lamp on each. Across from the desk was another cabinet with a small frig. Outside was a tiny balcony with a table and two chairs. There was a large, flat screened TV hanging on the wall opposite the bed. The cabin seemed clean and comfortable. Only the floor showed stains on the carpet. Our cabin stewardess greeted us soon after we arrived at the cabin.
We ate most of our meals in the main dining room, but also had some in the lido restaurant. The food in the main restaurant was fair to good. I had prime rib the second night and it was tough and somewhat tasteless. The fish dinners were usually good. There was a noticeable lack of vegetables included with most of the dinners. A typical fish dinner would have the fish placed on top of risotto or succotash with no vegetables. One night I had one slice of potato and a few julienned carrots. For those wanting more vegetables, I would suggest a salad before the main course. The service in the main restaurant was somewhat slow the first two nights, but improved as the week progressed. The waiters were always pleasant and efficient.
The food in the lido restaurant was usually tasteless, which is normal. The quality is also not a good as in the main restaurant. There was a good selection and several types of themes were followed. We noticed Mexican several times and one night they had Bavarian food. This ship has a serving area that we have not seen before. There were several lanes running across the ship from side to side with serving areas on each side. Even though the ship had over three thousand passengers on board, there was never any problem getting to the food items. One lane had only desert items. These were very tasty and well prepared and presented.
The first day we had hamburgers with fries at the grill near the pool and they were very good. I also had a slice of pizza one afternoon and it was fair. We have had poor luck at the specialty restaurants in the past so avoided them on this trip. The gelato at a cafe on a lower deck was good and the price was right. Two large scoops for $2.10 and they were enough for the two of us to share.
We don’t care for the productions shows put on by Princess, so we usually avoid them. We did see one on this trip and it was just so-so. There was a good comedian who did two shows, one in the Princess Theatre and one in the Vista Lounge. A singer, Lou Gazzara, did two shows and he was quite good. He apparently was on the Idol TV show 17 years ago and now lives and works in Las Vegas. A married couple did a comedy/magic show one night. Unfortunately, they were not funny and the magic was boring. They used people from the audience several times and the tricks were drawn out far too long. Overall, the shows were better than on other Princess cruises we have taken in recent years.
One afternoon, we watched a movie in our cabin. There was a large selection of movies and TV shows available on demand. This is a new feature we have not seen on other Princess ships.
We primarily took this cruse to see the ship. This was the largest Princess ship we have ever been on. At 142,229 tons it was impressive. The interior décor was very well done. We often stay onboard when the ship is in port and use the pools when there are far fewer people around than on sea days. We look forward to swimming in the enclosed pools, because we both are easily sun burned. However we were surprised to learn that this ship did not have one. There is one pool in the center deck and one forward near the Sanctuary area. Neither is covered.
The ship has serious vibration problems in certain areas. Mostly it is on lower decks and from the center of the ship to the rear. My wife was in a store on a lower deck and noticed that some watches in a display case were vibrating severely. While she stood near them a glass door on a nearby display case shattered and glass fell all over the floor near her. Thankfully she was not injured, but the glass could have caused serious problems. We went down to the area several hours later and the broken glass was still all over the floor of the shop. We also noticed the vibration while in the dining room on deck 5. Our cabin was towards the bow on deck 10 and the vibration was not as serious up there. We only noticed this problem on one other ship about 25 years ago.
On the last morning of the cruise, we went to the Vista lounge, which is the area where Elite passengers wait to leave the ship. The Captain’s Club representative was there to assist in the disembarkation process and did a very efficient job of announcing the departure time for the various groups. We left the ship a little ahead of schedule and were escorted to the bus. Unfortunately, it was another walk of about one half mile to get to the bus. Once onboard everything went fine and we were checked in at Southwest Airlines and off to our waiting area within minutes. The flight back to Sacramento was quite bumpy and the attendants were therefore unable to serve any refreshments.
It was an enjoyable cruise with quiet seas all the way down and back. We were surprised that the weather in Mexico was actually cooler than we were having at home in northern California. We expected it to be hot, but most of the time it was overcast and cool to warm. On the two days returning from our last stop in Puerto Vallarta, it was very windy and too cold to enjoy any time on deck.
We had one unfortunate experience while on board. We returned to our cabin one morning and found the floor to be soaking wet near the bathroom. I was afraid a pipe had broken so my wife sought the cabin stewardess and was told she had knocked over a bucket of water onto the carpet near the bathroom. She said she had tried to soak up the water with towels, but it apparently did not work. She made no effort to take other measures to clean up the mess. We immediately called the head of housekeeping and asked to have a wet vacuum brought in to remove the water from the carpet. We then left to spend the afternoon at the pool. When we returned, nothing had been done and the floor was still wet. My wife got on the phone to housekeeping and we also went to the front desk to ask for a cabin change. We were told that no cabins were available, but a supervisor was called to the front desk and he made arrangements to have a dryer brought to our room. Unfortunately, we had to stay in the room for several hours while the dryer was going, because we had to leave the door to the balcony open and did not want to leave the cabin while it was open. We had to cancel dinner reservations given to us as a perk by Princess at the Italian restaurant and were unable to get a decent time on another night. We were very surprised that the problem was not attended to without our intervention. We suggest that anyone having a similar problem should immediately get in touch with someone at a higher level. First, the positives. Overall it was a relaxing and friendly environment. I cannot say enough positive about the wait staff in the dining areas and every other staff member we crossed was cheery and enthusiastic and very willing to help and engage.
The state room was filthy on arrival. Feces smeared on the sides of the toilet bowl, dirty hand prints in the shower, and clearly not vacuumed. Patio doors to deck were filthy too. Sofa in room was grimy looking. You board a ship with trepidation about getting norovirus and this is what greets you. We were given a complimentary meal in the steak house after complaining. Never did see the complimentary robes we signed up for before the cruise.
The internet service you purchase is locked to one device. This is not mentioned prior to purchase. The ship's television service went out three times for hours, once for a solid 24 hours. - so much for relaxing in your room at the end of an evening with a show before bedtime. I was glad to not be traveling with children.
The buffet featured food that was bland the majority of the time. Maybe I can appreciate this more when I am a geriatric. Food had from the other dining areas was much better.
AMATEUR live entertainment. For example there was a Mariachi band with some members pretending to play instruments along to canned recordings. It made relaxing in common areas during live performances difficult. It really was that cringe worthy. I am not musical at all and I was picking up on it. For my husband who is a classically trained musician it was excruciating.
The Medallion GPS tracker/room key/electronic payment device was convenient. I felt like part of a wildlife tag and release program but it did aid the room stewards in knowing we were not in the room and we found it cleaned at all differing hours of the day which was convenient.
For those signing up for shore excursion packages please do NOT assume that if lunch is provided as part of the excursion that a beverage of ANY sort is included as well (billed separately for water - surprise!).
Mazatlan is a hard pass. Anyone who has visited a Mexican city bordering the US has already seen what they have to offer of squalor, but now add in many Mexican federal policemen with machine guns for that extra war zone feel. Read Less

I chose this cruise because of the value and mostly because it leaves locally from a port in my home town. The bed was uncomfortable and the ship does not provide ANY alternatives. The response to maintenance took days. I had brought protein drinks that had to be kept cool and the fridge wasn't cooling. For some reason the ship decides to schedule maintenance on our balcony during the early morning while we were at sea and told us to keep our doors locked and curtains closed. When I opened the doors later I found notes to not touch the railings and the smell was awful. The entertainment was Vegas Lounge level. Other than the helpful, awesome crew, I was very disappointed in just about everything else. The food was pretty good too. My only complaint about that was that out of all 20 or so choices of dessert there was nothing chocolate (except cookies) on many nights in the buffet. Try Royal Caribbean instead! Read Less

The largest balcony rooms (not suites) were too small and too much furniture. Food was not good. It seems the chef likes to make the food look good, but it honestly had no taste. They served a lot of pork meals - probably because pork is so cheap. Not impressed. The medallion method is awesome. We never had to sign anything and were able to use the apps to see what was going on around the ship without carrying the agenda around with us all day. The entertainment was second rate at best. Typical comedian - a constant barrage of not funny cruise jokes. There was a juggler that didn't really juggle very well. The 2 female singers had talent. Not sure how the 2 male singers ended up in this production. The best entertainment we saw was the cruise director (he was funny and friendly) and the games they played. The internet access was amazing - the best we've had on a cruise ship. This will most likely be the last Princess cruise for us. The cons definitely outweighed the pros. Read Less

Having sailed Princess in the past many times, I found the Royal Princess to be a disappointment. Much better liked the design of the Diamond, Sapphire and Ruby Princess - not to mention the Crown Princess. The bathrooms on the balcony staterooms are so small. Very disappointing. The carpet in our stateroom was in horrible condition as well as our other party that we were with - balcony cabin. The entertainment was disappointing or nowhere to be found. The gym workout area was so ridiculously small. The servers and the attitude of the staff was not like we have experienced in past Princess cruises where everyone went over and above to make sure the experience was fantastic. The staff seemed not happy to be there. The time at the Ports of Call was so rushed that you barely had any time at each port. A note to Princess: I see a couple of your future ships are going to be designed like this ship - which to me is just like a Carnival ship. As previously mentioned, the Diamond Princess and the Sapphire Princess were a much better designed ship and made a much better experience. When crossing the only hallway by the Princess Live Theatre, it was so crowded, you barely had 7 foot of space to walk through to pass without bumping into other passengers. We are from the Bay Area and booked a 6 am fight out of San Jose to LAX. We were up at 330 am so we were tired and excited. We got an uber to a breakfast place near the airport called Bread and Butter. It was really good and very inexpensive. We took an uber around 11 am to the pier from the restaurant. It was so surreal to see the enormous Royal, which would be home for the next 7 days.
Since our daughter was celebrating her Sweet 16 birthday we decided to book a suite a 102.. and make it a surprise on what room we booked. When we dropped off our bags we we ushered into a medallion line. i kept asking if this was line for suites everyone told me yes. We and everyone else were given number 5. We were checked in and asked the lady about suites and she had no idea so she called her supervisor and asked if there was a special area or a person to walk guest on. The supervisor said, " Because you're medallion pre checked you just sit with everyone else. No special area or walk on host." OK/// Even Carnival has an area for suites but we were tired and glad to find a chair to rest. The kind lady next to me overheard that we were in a suite and told me to go up to the lady calling out numbers. We did. she apologized and said to go right on.
The ship was beautiful and so impressive. Our cabin on Aloha deck A102, was also amazing. A really gorgeous bathroom with a deep soaking tub and separate shower. We met briefly with our steward, Edsell. We were so hungry and tried to find the dining room for lunch, that was open but no one seemed to direct us right. We stumbled onto Alfredo's and what a delicious place this was. We had the vegetarian pizza and Hawaiian pizza. we also tried the tiramisu for dessert and it was clearly the best dessert we had. all week. We went to the room and unpacked and rested.
After mustered we made reservations at the crown grill for dinner. It was complimentary with suite privileges. I had the prawn appetizer and filet mignon with baked potato. My husband had the same and my daughter had the steak tartare and lamb. She loved it. Not sure if I would eat raw beef. We were full for dessert. The wait staff was excellent.
Our room steward tried his best but when we asked him to exchange the mini bottles for all sky vodka, instead of the various other liquors. he told us to call room service, which I did. Room service directed to tell our room steward for this request.. Finally we had a room service drop off our pre purchased liquor bottle and we told him and he took care of it. We also asked our steward if we could have menus to order dinner since we wanted to just relax in our cabin. He again told us to call room service. My husband just went down to the restaurant and took pictures and we did receive it. Room service was fantastic. Always early and a white table clothe was et out.
We did the ultimate balcony dinner and it was amazing. I recommend this highly. We had so much food and it was fresh. The lobster was way better then what is offered in the regular MDR. The nice thing about it was my daughter was able to order food from the regular menu and eat with us. We tried to see if she could get our UBD menu but they can not separate so it would have been another 100 dollars for an additional one person.
My daughter and husband did the scuba diving tour in Cabo. It was so cold and the visibility was not good but that is Mother nature. In Mazatlan we went to the beach in the golden zone. We did jet skis.. The rental is 60 dollars for half an hour. My husband and daughter did fresh oysters from a beach lady. She had a table and just through oysters out on a table and shucked them..They were very fresh and no-one got sick.
In Puerto Vallarta we did the Eco tour which was amazing. We stopped in a tiny village called san jose and ate fresh tortillas. Then to the jungle to go on a hike. We also ate homemade tortilla with beans and guacamole from a traditional farm. Delicious and I could have ate a dozen.. Our tour guide discussed the birds and plant life in this region... Very interesting. We ended on a beach ( non swimmable) for a bbq lunch. Really enjoyed this and the people were nice and friendly. Just make sure to have hiking boots and bug spray.
We used Sabatini' for breakfast which was amazing. Our highlight was the Pub lunch on our last day. The food was ok, Club class had amazing pastas. It did take awhile to get served.
We bought the thermal pass Enclave but were so disappointed that we got a refund. It was so crowded it was hard to find a space to sit. The Spa had foam in it , which I know want harm you but it is not pleasant to bath in.. People were not pre-showering which grossed me out. And a lady had a band aid on her foot. We were refunded, but were pushed to use our money instead on a massage or other service. We said no and then she said the salt rub needed to be returned or she would need to charge me for that. Thankfully we did not open them and gave it back. Only one refund was done, so a trip to guest services to rectify. I did not like also, there was no sea view just a dark tomb with people walking back and forth.. It was not for us. Holland America has the best thermal suites in my opinion.

My family of 5 just got off of Royal Princess. We have cruised on NCL, RC, and Carnival. This was a first for us on Princess line. I was very excited to try a new cruise line and compare to my other cruises. Well let me start of with the bad;
the food is the worse I’ve seen and ate. My family and I stayed hungry the last two days of our voyage. We even tried the specialty restaurant that we paid for. Medicore food and same choices everyday. The breakfast hours finished early and it seemed like they wanted less people to dine for breakfast. What I noticed is they didn’t want us to dine in the dining room. They tried to have people dine more at the buffet. Either one was a joke for food. Even the steaks and seafood at the specialty restaurant was not good. I was on the Carnival Horizon in December and there food was hands down the best! They had fresh squeezed green juices in the morning and also they let you dine for breakfast until 2:00pm on seadays as brunch. Also not much to do on the ship very boring. Although there were kids on this voyage it seemed as it was for a older crowd. It was okay for me for the first 3 days then it got boring with nothing to do. Shows, club and entertainment was not up to date.
Now for the good part; extremely clean ship and all public areas. Our room was very clean. We had two mini suites. Oh forgot inbarkation was a mess they could find my medallion so took a while to get on. The pool area was clean and well kept. Our room steward was very nice. Every employee was very nice to us. They seemed like they were well taken care of Princess company unlike other ships were the employees look over worked and angry. I like how the employees were not pushy or they didn’t expect any tips. I like how Princess employees were the best from any other ship I’ve been on. Made us feel comfortable they didn’t make us feel obligated to tip. The other thing I liked on Princess is they serve you coffee juice water and also ice cream as like on other lines it’s help your self and people make big messes. I liked the fact that there was no food droppings or dirty plates every were in the buffet or around pool area. The cleanness, comfort and class beats all the ships I’ve been on. I went to the spa and it was amazing! Loved their spa, the massage rooms were so big and comfy. Had the most relaxing massage.
The medallion digital badge is good but when they are charging you, you don’t know how much they are ringing you up. You won’t be able to keep count if you wanted to. I also loved the cafe on the 5th flood were they served specialty coffees and pastries. My favorite spot throughout the entire cruise. Bottom line the food bothered me the most. It was the most disgusting food I’ve ever had. Other then that the ship is nice and the employees are nice, it’s extremely well kept ship.
Most likely I won’t cruise with them because the food matters to me. Read Less

The medallion level isn't what is cracked up to be. Where as your embarkation is supposed to be faster, I saw no difference from my Elite Priority Boarding. They need to get staff up to speed on this new Medallion boarding, example: We preregistered on line by scanning passports and photos, yet we had to produce our passports 3 times when once would have been adequate.
The upgrade of the TV system is excellent when it was working, was down 3 out of 7 days and why they would only have 4 episodes of Love Boat is beyond me as Princess Cruises has always touted their affiliation with the Love Boat series. They should have all of the episodes available. The ones they were displaying were the same ones we had on our Japan Trip last year.
The food was not what we consider 5 star, the beef being served in the dining room and buffet was tough and tasteless. My experience in the dining room was excellent (waiter was very attentive) and for the 17th time I did not get assigned to the table with the correct number of passengers, ask for four got two.
The 2 production show were superb especially the one with the guest vocalist. The comedian was horrible. , .

Since we've been to all these places more than twice and have cruised to the ports more than twice. This cruise was strictly for R&R and my hubby's birthday, where the only thing you worry about is getting dressed to eat and see one of our favorite cities again (PVR). The medallion is something new where we were lead to believe it's a way of communicating with your friends and family on the cruise with you. It still has a few kinks to it, like ringing, or notifying you that you have a message. For you to know you have a message, you have to constantly look at the app for your messages. Other than that service is always the best the food wasn't as I expected. I've had better on other princess cruise lines. Purchased specialty dining at the Crown Grill for the hubby's birthday, but was not very exciting as I thought it would be. This specialty dining on this ship I'm giving it a thumbs down. Even the service wasn't as good as it should be. We should've stayed with our usual dining and probably would've had a better time and service with our usual waiters. Read Less

We only got off of the ship at Mazatlan for 30 minutes. We stayed on board with the little ones playing in the pool
Things that I think Princess got right:
Concerts at sea on the big screen. Neat concept. Excellent sound system . MUTS except it was cold. Even the blankets weren't enough.
This is the first time I felt a ship was crowded. People were everywhere. Shows were packed. Sometimes it felt good just to go to our balcony to get away from the noise.
The walking flow in the ship is designed poorly.There are several places in the buffet , pool areas, and deck six shopping areas where you get funneled down to single file each direction. If a waiter has a tray you have to stand aside to let them pass. Or if there are are slow walkers, the traffic backs up.
On our last night I ordered a hamburger off the left side of the menu and asked if to be cooked rare. They asked for my room number because I asked for rare. Then it came well done. Too late to ask for it to be cooked properly. Everybody else at the table was eating.

I live in the Los Angeles area and boarding in San Pedro was perfect. The embarkation went very smoothly and the staff was very welcoming. The ship is big but with the Ocean Medallion it was easy to find everything and find other people in your party. The excursions were great, it was very easy to get around and they staff explained everything very well, we had plenty of time in each port to see and experience it, we also had time to go shopping, one of my favorite things to do when I go on trips, need to bring souvenirs for my family and buy a few things for me and my husband. The entertainment onboard was outstanding, Princess theater shows are amazing and the shows at the Piazza are great, one thing they had in this trip that I have never seen before, renewing of wedding vows, my husband and joined other couples and it was very romantic. I got to know many of them closely as I frequented many of the same places. They knew me by the second night. Always a smile. The room was great. I had a Mini Suite. (I read a really bad review of the mini suite on the Royal, I swear those passengers HAD to be on another ship!). It was great! I traveled with my 15 year old Daughter and 12 Year old son. They had an amazing time. They got to know a ton of people their age thru the different programs Princess has to offer.I have ZERO complaints. Embarkation was a breeze as was disembarkation. The Internet is as fast as I have ever used on a ship. Never had an issue with streaming anything. Not that I was on there to watch TV, but you can if you want. Food was EXCELLENT. Service was excellent and the whole vibe on the ship was positive. Speaking of the ship.....the Royal Princess is an AMAZING Ship!!!! She is superb in every way. I love there is no lame go-carts or climbing walls or slides. It is just classy...period. I will never go below this If I want all that non-sense I can get it cheaper at home. I saw the Norwegian Bliss in port on Puerto Vallarta and I almost puked. That isn't cruising. That is a Malibu Grand Pris Arcade at a HUGE premium. If that is your thing have fun. No way for me. I chose this because of the ports, two new Mexican ports on the west side. However, they were disappointing. Cabo required a tender and we didn’t get on the beach until almost 3 PM! Also, to pay for a ship excursion or a private beach club was $100 each, and the public beach was crammed with vendors so not pleasant. Water was freezing. In Mazatlan I had booked the salsa and salsa, which I had planned to do for years. It was $90 a person, fine, my daughter enjoyed it, but there was actually no men to dance with and no free time to dance at the end. We only had an hour to use the lovely resort pool and beach, which was not long enough, and the price included unlimited margaritas but how much tequila can one drink at 10 o’clock in the morning? Puerto Vallarta was great, as always. The ship was very clean, and the staff was very polite, professional, attentive, but almost too formal. I would have like more interaction with the crew, and please provide some male dancers! There were literally hundreds of women wanting to dance at all the lounges and dance events, but only one or two men. Pretty ship, very clean, enough events but not enough dance shows. Also, the evening dining conflicted with several of the shows so we missed some. I’m getting on and off was efficient, baggage handled well, really nothing was crowded and in fact most of the bars and lounges were empty most of the time. We were pleased with our assigned dining table for 4 every night. The fine dining was delicious.
Horizon Court buffet had a generous selection of food every meal. We enjoyed later at night wandering around there just to walk around; and to sit down for a bite if we couldn't resist, even after our dinner!
All staffs were very professional. The cruise director Matt O was a whole new level of professional! His passion, talent and enthusiasm made every show memorable. He brought laugh and happiness every where he went. He was the shinning star on Royal Princess!
The new junior program was just rolled out a few months when we cruise. Some of the staffs were not well-trained to handle multiple requests with all kids around; the skee ball machines either were broke down, or not allow to play due to other reasons. Nice ship. The new Medallion Service is a winner. Each guest has a little medallion that pretty much does everything. You can track members of your party, helps you with directions, unlocks you door as you approach, is used to all purchases of any kind (the ship is cash less), and other things. I purchased my internet ahead of time for a flat rate of $55 and it was by FAR the fast I've had at sea. Download speed was usually 4mbps or better. I think you could stream Netflix or Prime Video but I choose to download movies and TV shows which worked great.
Buffet area is the best organized I've seen on my 5 cruises. Anytime and Traditional dinning are good as always on Princess. This ship did not have a Curtis Stone venue which we thought was great. I don't think the ship had any of the Michelin Chef on this ship. We missed this
We attended the Entertainment Show every night. It was good not great. The Princess Live Game shows were great fun, and you could watch them On Demand the next day. Wish there were more. Other activities were pretty much cruise ship standard. Read Less

Full disclosure, we are avid cruisers with 20 trips on different lines. Royal Caribbean always ranks the highest on our list. Our 7 day cruise started with a mis-placed suitcase that was not delivered until 7 p.m. after several calls and visits with Princess supervisors. Disappointed that after many promises of return calls none we received, including no apologies for the major delay. I should mention that we did receive our other 2 bags soon after boarding at 2 p.m. Our travel partners that checked bags at the same time and location as ours received their bags on time. Princess boarding process is lengthy and cumbersome. A lot of waiting to board the ship. The new medallion system needs improvement. This controls your door locks, however it opens the door at least six feet as you approach your stateroom and leaves it open for 10 seconds after you leave. We also do not like the fact that your names are displayed outside your door on a screen 24/7. Cabin, a mini suite, was fine, however the bath area shelving was very dusty. No greeting from cabin steward or other interaction throughout the week. Dining on Princess was a disappointment. Late seating first night had us on the worst location for a party of four even with advance reservation prior to sailing. We were moved to a much nicer location after speaking to a supervisor. In general staff not real friendly, with the only exception being our dinner waiter and his assistant. Breakfast staff in the dining room not gracious or accomodating. The front hostess was boarder line rude. Lunch in the dining room also fell below service expectations. Note we never ate off buffets since food quality tends to be poor. We were very surprised that dining room and specialty dining room food quantity was also just average, nothing to be excited about. With all the hype for the Executive Chef, he was more “show” then delivery of quality food products. Granted the ship serves thousands of meals, there are other cruise lines that do a much better job. On board entertainment was fine with the same production shows typically booked on other lines. Shore excursions were also average. Recommend booking early as many popular tours were sold out by the time we got on the ship. Disembarkation for us was difficult, we had to carry off early due to an airline flight change. Very long lines and what seemed like miles of dragging bags. We will not do that again.
