My father died during the cruise and I needed to amend my travel arrangements. The front desk staff were terrible and it took over 3 days to sort new departure arrangements. I received conflicting information from onboard Front desk staff and onshore Princess staff. Princess gave no credit for existing return flight and I had to pay for a new full fare that was exchanged from Aust$ to US$ to NZ$. The air carrier advised my family that Princess as travel agent had full discretion in making no or little penalty charges to travel. No discretion was applied. I would not recommend Princess on this basis. There was relentless onboard promotion for buying jewellery (Effy) and artworks which was tedious. Food was good and plentiful, entertainment was a bit ho hum - one comedian was absolutely dreadful and the second relied on old hack and tired women-as stupid content. There were two production shows which were excellent. Musicians played similar and in a lot of cases the same songs (how many times can you listen to Hey Jude?!) Onboard activities were limited with the same things recycled through the cruise - movies (same movies returned too frequently); bingo; quizzes (I'm a quiz fan but the same format and type of questions were used across three quiz events, and the events were bumped in face of venue conflict); demonstrations such as cocktail making was view only. Cards as an activity was good (bridge; 500) as there were a fair number of people interested therefore plenty of opportunity to play. However this was organised by participants. I feel entertainment staff often opted out of organising activities, so it dependent on participants to get things going. Venues appeared to be mismanaged in that the act and or audience size wasn't appropriate to the particular venue used. Enrichment activities were limited to forensic topics (potentially good however presenter was poor and used promotional material as evidence) and others were directly linked to the sale of jewellery and artworks. Did two excursions - whole day Moorea swimming and snorkeling which was excellent and the LA Venice Beach and Santa Monica visits. Definitely wouldn't recommend Venice Beach as a destination (old; tired; dirty; broken; grotty) but Santa Monica was nice to walk around (shops; pier; beach) Read Less

Chose this cruise because it had an associated land tour after the cruise. The major issue was neither the cruise or land tour. It was what Princess did during booking. We booked a room almost one year before the cruise on deck 14 (room 505) with a balcony on the starboard side after much research. After everything was paid and approximately 45 days before the cruise they gave our room away without our knowledge or permission. We didn't learn this until we were printing the boarding pass which showed a room on deck 9 starboard aft. We called both Princess and our travel agent requesting our original room back. Princess said this was an upgrade and refused to give it back and our agent said she would have to get permission from the new people. They didn't get our approval why theirs? Anyway after many calls and arguments they finally gave us a room on deck 14 but it was not a location we wanted. It faced the aft of the ship and the location was similar to one we had on another cruise and didn't like. We couldn't cancel for two reasons, the cancellation charges and other plans we had booked before and after this cruise. So we accepted their room offer, but they will never get another cruise out of us. Now for the ship itself. Food was mediocre at best in the buffet and the La Mer restaurant which was the only specialty restaurant we visited. The buffet started shutting down food lines around 6:30 pm each night. They also closed off 1/4 of the buffet twice during the cruise for a Crab Shack specialty night restaurant. Next one port required tenders. There wasn't enough tenders to get the 3500+ people off the ship in a timely manner. Also it took an extra hour beyond the posted return time to get the people back on the ship. A ship this large doesn't need to do ports that require tenders. During the cruise and land tour we discussed these issues with travel agents and people which have done many Princess cruises, most of them were appalled with this cruise. We have done over ten cruises with different cruise lines and this was the second worst ever. Never again! Read Less

So I have been on many cruises in the past. Princess cruises was my first cruise ever in fact. I had nothing to compare it to at the time so I loved that cruise. My kids were very young so I had no real time for entertainment then. I have cruises on carnival, royal Caribbean and Norwegian and all of those are fun. Princess is the most boring cruise I have ever been on. There was nothing going on ever. I brought teenagers with us and they were bored out of their minds which was really disappointing since I spent so much money on this cruise. For the first time in my life I couldn’t wait until this cruise was over and I have never felt that before. They cater to old people and people who like quiet refined entertainment. Lots of orchestra bands playing everywhere always!!! It was annoying to say the least. On sea days there was no entertainment besides outdoor movies or playing your own cards or board games. Many people reading all over the ship. That says a lot about the kind of cruise ship this is. BORING!!!! The service is great, the staff is friendly for the most part but if you are under 60 and if you like to have fun, this is not the ship for you! Evening entertainment was just as dismal as the day with many classical musical shows and very few upbeat events anywhere to be found. Read Less

I didn't pick this cruise; I was dragged into it. I suppose cruises are ok if you don't mind all the people and waiting for stuff. This ship is showing its age (chipped finishes, torn carpets, etc.). We had a balcony cabin; my RV has more space, including the kitchen. It was hard to figure out what to go do, as they didn't post the day's activities until the morning of; we missed a couple of things because they weren't posted (found out about them later from other folks). Went to a couple of "Production" shows; they were ok, but geared to really old folks (we're 70). All the crew is very polite, but really clueless as to what's going on outside of their area; we couldn't find anyone to tell us about the activities on board. Instructions for the shore excursions were very minimal - you better show up at the designated spot and get in line; very few details about the excursions themselves. I guess the best part was the food; very well done and presented, sit down service was excellent, although a little slow at times (I suppose that's the point). They did have a fitness center, but no trainers. The pools were closed most of the time, and cold when they were open. This did it for me, I'm never going on a cruise again. Read Less

Chose this cruise because of a 2 for 1 deal and I'm glad I didn't pay full price! It was my first cruise but I received no help or direction from staff during embarking the ship. We had to find our own way around. The ship was old and slow. Captain announcements dragged on for ages and interrupted conversations, relaxation and sleep. Cabins were ok if you didn't want to spend any time in them otherwise they were stuffy as air conditioning didn't seem to work. Dining was limited as seating wasn't great and service from kitchen was slow. Some wait staff were great but majority useless. Very little entertainment on board and activities were age appropriate so not suitable. Singles and solos get togethers were crammed with couples and families. Service was generally non-existent. Staff were bored and paid little attention to guests. Port time were too limiting and shore excursions overcrowded and time consuming. Read Less

After a two week holiday in New Zealand for mum, dad and three children, I had planned to take mum and the kids on a short voyage back to Sydney on the Sun Princess. I have been on a few cruises but mum and the kids had never sailed on a cruise before. I thought that a four day voyage would give them a sample and perhaps if they liked it, we would be able to take a cruising holiday in the future. Unfortunately, as we were ascending the ramp in Auckland our noses were assaulted by an awful smell like that of sewage, such as that from a septic tank. I said that we should hurry up and get on the ship to escape it. But guess what; the smell was coming from the ship, not the ramp. Some parts of the ship were free of the smell. Our rooms were on Baja deck and my son and I were in a cabin which was only a short distance from my other half and my two daughters and our cabin was free of the smell. Unfortunately, the mini suite occupied by the girls was affected very strongly. My daughters disliked it but were not sick. The missus though, felt quite ill for most of the journey and threw up several times. She could not eat for most of the time so missed out on the delicious meals that the rest of us were able to enjoy. We complained to the sympathetic cabin steward who told us that many other people were also suffering from the stench and that the crew were attempting to fix the problem. He suggested that we leave the windows open, but it was too hot and humid for that. The promenade deck forward on the starboard side was also badly affected by smell and though also terrible, it was slightly different, although it still smelled like sewage. This made it unpleasant to use the deck to walk around for some excercise. Just about everything else about the voyage was good. For the first couple of days we dined in the Marquis restaurant, but we soon decided that the buffet was much better and didn't return to the restaurant. There was a greater variety of food to be had in the buffet and it was excellent. Also the smell was not evident in the buffet though it was in the dining room, though not to such an extent as in the mini suite. There was a very good variety of movies and entertainment both on the big screen or on the tv in the privacy of the cabins. The swimming pools were just the right temperature for us and were never crowded so we spent quite a bit of time in them. Everything was as good as it could be apart from the smell. Now it looks as if we will not be taking another cruise. The kids and I said that we would like to, but the missus does not want to risk that, and I would not put her through such an ordeal again so I guess that's the end of that. Read Less

A trip on memory lane did us decide to take a 4 weeks cruise on the Sun Princess, it was the first ship we ever cruised on in 2005 so we thought we new the ship. Now after almost 13 year it was not the same anymore. We fluw al the way from Holland to Sydney a long trip. We stayed two days in Sydney before the cruise, but the next morning we heard by coincedence, the ship would say a day later, never got any message from Princess, nothing, just from here say. So we had to book another night in a hotel. We sailed the next day, the cruise was around New Zealand, back to back Sydney. the first stop was cancelled because off the late departure from Sydney. We had a somewhat unfriendly steward, but yeah you cannot be everybodies friend. After the first 14 days we had to move to an other cabin, okay no problem. We had to go true trnsit to go back on the ship, two hours standing and waiting for the clearence to go back to the ship. The second cruise was the dream of my husband, the Fiji islands. From the 8 stops we saw three, the first two were beautyfull bounty islands lovely weather swimming in the bay. The third was Suva, that was a dirty ugly harbour the smell was awful. We stayed for an hour outside it was not a nice city. The next two stops were because of the weather not to approach with tenders so we did not see these islands. We just went by. After these islands more people began to feel sick, the flu was onboard, noro virus also. We both got the flue, got 5 days quarentine and had to see what to eat and drink from roomservice. That was not nice. A bill from the doctor off $800,00 was the result. Nice thank you. We had a week to recover becauce our trip was not over after 4 weeks, that did not work. This vacation was a special trip, my 65 birthday. I blame Princess Cruises for the sickness on board, in the 4 weeks we were on the ship I never saw anyone from housekeeping to clean the toilets floor with a mop. Not once. In de corners was a brown line smelt and it was indeed pis. The toilets were under maintanance or very smelly the ladie that clean the toilets wipe with a dry cloth the lid of the toilet flushed it and that was all. The toilets at the pool, It was a Nightmare. Pis everywere, at the last day we went out friends off ours stayed for another cruise, they were all asked to leave the ship and dont come back till 5:00 PM big cleaning maybe? It was a cruise never to forget but not because we enjoyed it. The ship is so dirty its a shame the asked the money they did. Read Less

After sailing with other cruise lines in the past and having a blast, we decided to sail with Princess for the first time due to the itinery they offered over the holiday period. Biggest mistake I have ever made. I don't normally complain and have spent just as much time writing raving reviews on here about our other great cruises, but this was a disaster. We checked our bags in at the luggage drop off at 10 am and went and did some final shopping in Auckland and then checked in to the ship at 12pm. Check in and embarkation was quick and smooth. 2 of our three bags arrived sporadically throughout the day. Cabins are much smaller than we are used to and showers are tiny so don't even think about this ship if your a bigger person. 6 pm and our bag still hadn't arrived. After several requests to our cabin steward and the ship due to leave the dock I was told "don't worry" by our steward with quite a bit of attitude. As the ship was pulling out I call the steward to ask him to find out if my bag was at least on the ship, to this again the response I got was "don't worry". At this stage I was worried and was fed up with his flippant attitude and asked him to find my bag as this was the luggage that had all of our clothing. No more than 2 minutes later there was a knock on our stateroom door where our cabin steward was standing with our missing bag which he felt the need to throw at me and walk off without saying a word. I was dumbfounded, and contacted passenger services to complain about what had happened. And we hadn't even left the heads yet. Let's just say the service didn't get any better. The ship ran out of white wine on day 2 of a 12 day Christmas new year cruise. Most of the bars closed at 7pm and others didn't open till 5 forcing you to walk half the ship to get a drink. One afternoon I was in the Churchill lounge reading a book and felt like a drink so had to go to the casino as it was the closest bar open and asked for a glass of Pino Grigio. The girl behind the bar quite sharply responded " we don't have any" and after looking me up and down added " the only bottle of white wine we have here is $70 a bottle", as if I couldn't afford it. As we were travelling with my partners family we decided to try Vivaldi's on night 2, the head waiter was extremely rude and denied us entry to a half empty restaurant because we were on anytime dining. Last I was led to believe anytime dining means "anytime". We did find out later that Vivaldi's is the only restaurant on board that has a policy of anytime starting at 8:15pm, however the waiter should have handled it much better. All the staff with very few exceptions, seemed like it was an effort and a hindrance to carry out the simplest of tasks. Christmas Day was a non event apart from Santa being in the atrium for 2 hours for the kids in the morning there was nothing special organised. Christmas lunch was had in the buffet and the only thing that even made it slightly Christmassy was sliced ham. Dinner was a bit better with sliced turkey and pudding in the dining rooms, which made a few people on the ship, including me, sick. The choice of food was non existent throughout the cruise and felt like we ate the same things for 12 whole days and the anytime dining rooms all served the same food, which we found out later is not normally the case. The dining rooms were also extremely hot and overheard severally passengers complain. The wait staff were clumsy and frequently got orders wrong. We did, however, participate in the chefs table, which I would highly recommend as it's well worth the money. New Year's Eve also bearley happened. The top decks were blocked off from about 8 pm so no acces to the forward smoking area was allowed and all of the outdoor bars closed at 7pm. We thought we'd try sabatinis (a $25 per head specialty Italian restaurant) for New Years. Food was good but found out later that evening that the same menu was served in the anytime dining rooms at no extra charge so I would like to know what we paid the extra for. The only thing organised was a ballon drop which went off early so we missed it. The atmosphere was less than celebratory. The only place to go was skywalkers nightclub which again was way to hot and the crew pretty much took over the club once their shifts finished. It was the first New Years ever that I bearley made the countdown before I went to bed, extremely disappointed. The entertainment onboard is certainly left to be desired, if you could find it at all. There was nothing on the open decks and the quality of what was available was ammiature. For the first time ever we actually considered disembarking early. The final straw for us was on the last night. I cracked my head open getting into the pool. After having it attended to by a paramedic and being told it only required a few band aids, woke up the next morning to a blood soaked pillow. I went down to the medical centre to have it looked at before disembarking to be greeted with " oh YOUR the guy from last night" with a snide tone. After being assessed by the nurse, who was one of the few polite people on board the doctor came in and assesed the wound. Never before have I been judged so much in my life. After a clean up and some steri strips the head of security came in. Let me tell you this guy needs a job in Guantanamo Bay. Falling short of calling me a lier, he stormed out and slammed the door. I have never been so humiliated in my life. Oh and they charged me $200 for the experience. This was the worst holiday of my life and will never travel with Princess Ever again, and if you want to enjoy your holiday that you spend your hard earned money on, I suggest you don't either.
