Our first and probably our last river cruise. Our 7 day river cruise of the Danube was dubbed, by all the guests, as the 4 day bus cruise. We were bused and only used the Dolce as our hotel. Now we sure understand global warming and weather can not be controlled. We were told in Prague, the day before the cruise was to begin, that due to very low water tables on parts of the Danube we could begin our river cruise as intended but must now travel further south to meet our riverboat. Ok, we are stuck and have no choice. And we still think we are in for a new wonderful adventure. We set off at 8:30 a.m. for a 9 hr. bus trip. One stop in a town that has nothing to offer, I even forgot the name. But we are dumped there for 2 1/2 hrs. nothing to see, nothing to do but walk a bit and just sit and wait for the bus. The tour director couldn't even find any redeeming qualities about the town. Then the ride continues with 2 pee breaks at gas stations! Yes, gas stations. About 5:30 pm we arrive on the boat. When we arrive, one guest was so irate about the lousy bus ride, on old beat up buses too that he demanded from the cruise director why he got from Dallas to Prague faster then it took AMAWaterway to get him from Prague to the Danube River? They has no answer. It is announced that all must meet in the lounge for the new itinerary information. Yes, are still going to Nuremberg but it is now a 4 hr. bus ride, each way, for a 2 hr. tour. No way. The staff is shocked that most of us said NO, not after the 9 hr. ride. They then find a local tour but again, its a town with nothing to do. So we are bused for a few more days and we finally sail for 4 hrs. one afternoon along the Danube. 4 hrs. This was our one and only time actually enjoying the Danube. The last 3 days, they sailed at night, so you say nothing. A day trip to Salzburg was enjoyable but again a long bus ride. Our last stop was Budapest for an overnight before disembarking. A beautiful surprise as the city is wow and stunning. We enjoyed the crew, the food was just average on board, we had better meals while on tours and at additional costs. Now what truly turned us off, was that as we got to know the staff, we found out that the water issues on the Danube began in June and the re-routed itinerary wasn't just for us but had been going on for months. Now that takes some nerve from the company not to inform guests months in advance of this issue. They knew well before final payment that we would have a revised itinerary and one that was really shabby. And they did it for most of the season. No consideration to ask us if we wanted to cancel, re-schedule or still do the cruise. Oh and if you are taking a river cruise in the future, don't waste your money on a balcony or the "french balcony"( this is just a sliding window, no balcony). The river boats all tie up in tandem and you walk from one boat to the next to get to the dock. So each morning, you wake up, open the curtains and see a couple from the next boat staring at you from about 2-3 feet away. Waste of $3800 each for 7 days, & the post part, not sailing on the Danube for this truly lousy first experience. Read Less

We are very well traveled, and know what to expect from a travel experience. Ama waterways did not fulfill our expectations at all. Our trip was Prague to Budapest on the not so blue Danube .Our stay at the Intercontinental Hotel in Prague was nice. The location was great. Our ama tour guided tours were not so great. Thank heavens we spent 3 days in Prague prior to Ama contact, so we were able to see many things that would have been missed by relying on ama tours. The guides in Prague did not speak English very well, and many times it was very challenging to understand the information being provided. The "included" tours were rushed. We would be shown the outside of buildings or churches. If you wanted to see further into the buildings, there was usually a fee, which you paid yourself when you were on your "free time". This scenario was the setting for all of their included tours for the entire trip. The fees, for the most part were nominal, but..... The expensive optional tours, which at times were also rushed, did include many of the entrance fees. After an hour or two, the guides would tell you that you now have "free time" to explore on your own, then disappear so that you could not ask further questions or find out other information. You "met up" with the guide at a predetermined place for your walk or bus ride back. The different levels of walking so advertised, was a complete joke. As I was told by the VP of guest relations, their advertisement states that the "gentle walkers" or the late risers groups or even active walkers, were stated to be "when available". (I must have missed that paragraph as it was rarely available)  Everyone was grouped together, and hopefully you could make the bus prior to departure. Our embarkation in Nuremburg was without incident and very smooth. We had a suite with French balconies, which were really not needed. In each of the ports they dock the ships side by side, up to 4 deep (not just ama...all the lines do this), so you cannot even open your drapes because you would be staring into the cabin next to you on the next boat. You had to walk through each of the lobbies of the boats until you reached your boat. The ports are not close to the towns that you visit, so unless you are on a tour, you must find your own way into the towns, and more importantly back to the boat. It would have been a nice gesture for ama to provide a continuous running shuttle for this purpose. The service on the ship for the most part was very good. Overall communication, poor. It would have been nice to know where we were on the river at any given time. The captain did little to provide information of any kind Our suite, which was on the small side, was spotless. The beds were VERY HARD. Our cabin attendant managed to make them bearable by adding padding etc. He was great.. The food was good, nothing special. Your meals were either buffet or at dinner, served in the small dinning room. The head maître d told me, that, If you did not eat in the dinning room, you did not eat. As I was again told by the VP of guest services," we don't advertise or provide the amenity of any kind of room service.". There are many locks that you travel through while navigating the Danube. It is a slow procedure .For a good part of our trip we were not allowed on the top deck due to the numerous bridges and the minimal clearance afforded the ship. The adds showing everyone on the top of the boat relaxing and looking at the scenery are somewhat misleading, depending on level of the rivers and of course weather. Because we are well traveled, and can adjust to just about any situation, we had a wonderful time. The cities are beautiful. May is concert time in Prague. Many venues, especially in the churches are free. The optional concert in Vienna is a must, as is the "horse show" and ranch in Budapest. Budapest is also a wonderfully beautiful city. We extended (not with ama) at the Sofitel chain bridge hotel. The rooms were very nice and comfortable, the service excellent and the views spectacular . We will probably venture to another river cruise, but it won't be with ama. The overall experience with them and their tours was very disappointing. I found their guest relations department to be unconcerned and superficial in their responses to problems and concerns that we voiced regarding our welfare and the welfare of others with disabilities or mobility problems. We just returned from a 7 day cruise on the AMADolce through Germany. We were absolutely thrilled with our experience. This was our first river cruise, however, we have travelled extensively and done everything from all-inclusive resorts in Carribean, to medium-sized cruises in the Mediterranean, to bus tours through Poland. The level of service we received on this trip was beyond anything we have experienced before. First, the ship itself was great. It was tastefully decorated, while not being over the top. The room did not feel confining at all. The bed was large and comfortable. While not huge, the bathroom was adequately sized. We enjoyed having the large sliding door. While it would have been nice to have a full balcony if we would have cruised in the summer, I did not miss having it at all in October/November. The food on the ship was excellent. Dinners were 3-4 courses every night. There was always 2 or 3 choices for each course, and a standard fall back of chicken or steak if none of the menu selections appealed to you. The food was prepared well and the presentation was outstanding. Portions were good sized, but not too much that you couldn't finish. Our wine glasses were constantly kept full with either a red or white wine that was typically local to the area we were in. Lunch and breakfast were also great, with a nice buffet or choices off the menu. The staff was superb. Everyone from housekeeping, to the wait staff in the dining room, to the cruise director and hotel manager, to the captain. The staff to passenger ratio cannot be beat. Within the first day or so, everyone knew your names, what cabin you were in, and what you liked. They were constantly asking if there was anything they could do to make your trip better. Due to high water on the Mosel River, the end of our itinerary had to change at the last minute. Although I'm sure this led to a mad scramble by the cruise director and staff, they never showed it. They remained calm and explained everything in detail. They came up with alternate accommodations that were very well done. The only complaint I had is that I wish we had more free time in port. If you chose to do the ship excursion, you typically only had 30-45 minutes of free time before needing to be back on the ship. Even if we could have had another hour, that would have been enough. I highly recommend this cruise line. I will definitely sail with them again. Read Less
