Met up with friends for this cruise. We all felt standards have dropped. Undercooked and cold food in islands. Much better in 47. Less staff so cleaning in toilets was less often also running out of toilet paper . Too much of demonstrating and upselling of spa treatments. Sunbed reserving time limits not enforced. Music volume too loud in all venues. Smoking areas too small. Let smokers back on one side of deck 9 so they can join in with deck 9 entertainment. Increase tables and chairs smoking area on deck 4. Special praise goes to Alster and Rosemarie waiters from the live room. Kept everyone topped up with drinks and chat. Was impressed by bath towel size but sometimes they were stained. No need to upgrade to premium drinks package. Excursions too pricey. Aircon not working properly in both cabins. Had cruise cough when returned home. Corfu airport disabled area not big enough and not enough seats. We also had a couple of the same shows the second week. Read Less

We had a fantastic cruise on board this ship the staff the itinerary were all great , all staff work hard to make ur cruise enjoyable the restaurants are great with great food and service we always went to the same tables round where Charles and Arg served us they were brilliant Charles sorted out for my husband to have a menu delivered to our cabin each night to make sure my husband got his food free of cheese which was a great help to us they were pleasant friendly and went above and beyond to look after us . Great cabin staff reported a blockage in the bathroom and it was sorted with in 10 minutes couldn’t fault the response , shows were good ,entertainment in the atrium was great too . At the ports everything ran smoothly ,captain and his staff were approachable. Over all really enjoyed the cruise . Read Less

we choose this cruise for many many reasons. here is a few, not in any order of preference. 1. we can fly direct from Belfast International Airport to Palma on a Tui flight. 2 the transfer from the flight to the ship is absolutely painless, this is especially helpful as both myself and my wife have severe mobility problems. 3 we knew, from past experiences, the crew and facilities would be perfect for us as a retired couple, absolutley no hassle at all. complete relaxation as soon as we reached our deck 9 cabin (9040) we have no complaints whatsoever about any aspect of the 14 night cruise. The crew were magnificent. Fiendly, down to earth and overflowing with happiness. One guy shone out above the rest. his name is Philip, a young Jamaican. He literally, ran around the ship doing his job as a bar tender. he has this constant set of rhymes. "No card, no charge.......no fear, love is here..........spread the love'. these are accompanied by his hand bell ringing and his cry of "beep. beep" to clear his path. he kept everyone near him in fits of laughter. Every time there was live music on the Sirens pool deck or in the Medusa lounge in the evenings (watch him go at the last night Bandjam)......he gave us a demonstration of an amazing dance routine. It was worth the money just to witness his performance. We say "well done our kid"!! We dined in the evening in the Orion restaurant. We received a really professional, courteous service. The menu was varied but not outstanding. The portions are small but if you include soup/salad as well as a starter you will be fairly well filled. We used both the Lido and the Sirens buffet style restaurants for breakfast and the terrace grill for lunch. No complaints about either although some of hot food in Sirens was not always "piping hot" even the hot water for tea was not boiling hot. The entertainment was excellent. The young show team were brilliant, both as a team but also individuals. Maria, Jake and especially Matt gave us three amazing solo cabaret performances in Tides bar. Muzzic Unlimited were the resident band in the Medusa lounge. We enjoyed their performances particularly Romeo we he sang pieces like "Nessen Dorme and O Sol Mio". However we thought they could have reduced the sound a bit as it was very loud to our ears. We spent our evenings in Tides bar listening to a tremendous duo called "Tointense" or to everyone around, Tom and Maris. We just loved their music and their interaction with each other (the banter) and with the audience. They took time between each set to walk among the guests, chatting to everyone and expressing their appreciation of our presence. They also helped make our cruise the very very best. The amazing evergreen Mr Keith Kerslake shared the time in Tides with Tom and Maris. What more can be said about Keith? He just gets better and better every year. He is such a thoroughly nice guy, an expert pianist who gives his very best performance every time he gets behind the grand piano. He invented the Marella Dream last night "Bandjam". Just a couple of negatives and maybe a word of advice. We were quite shocked and so very disappointed on the crew night (July 19th 2019) to hear the compare (David) make remarks about male genital parts when many children were visibly in the audience. He also thought there was some humour in unhelpful and unnecessary remarks he made, in this age on inclusivity, about private and personal things that happen in a LGBT relationship. He also tried (failed miserably) to make some very antiquated joke about the "Humpty Dumpty" nursery rhyme as well as some other silly thing he picked up second hand from a bygone era. Wisdom and discretion do not seem to be know to him. He is not hard to spot. He eats alone, mostly beside the pool on Sirens deck. The rest of the team seldom are seen in his company except when they share in hosting a game. He is far too old to be involved in this kind of work. He can't sing, he can't dance and his English vocabulary equals a Year 3 primary school child. his two oft repeated expressions....."there you go" and its variant "there you have it". He seems to speak through his nose and has a personality resembling a dead fish including the vacant look on his,now moustached, face. His most outstanding feature is his "beer belly" hanging over his pants. The many ports we visited were full of interest for those who like to explore. They have a few downsides. The ship docks quite far away from the main places of interest and it usually costs around 5 Euros return to make the trip by coach. However these journey are operated and controlled locally and it can be very hard to get a bus/coach back to the ship and can involve a lot of waiting around due to the lack of a reliable timetable. We found the tours to be far too expensive and unsuitable for us due to our limited mobility. We would strongly advise future cruisers on the wonderful "Dream" ship to pack a warmish jacket, cardigan, light sweater for the evenings. The lounges,Tides, Medusa, Explorers and Water's Edge and quite cold with a noticeable cold air conditioning draft prevalent irrespective of where you sit. The bathroom is not large. It has the usual toilet, washbasin and over the bath shower and hair dryer. We found it impossible to get the temperature right with the shower. It either burned or was freezing cold. We asked for it to be fixed but this never happened. In summary. we have been cruising for over 20 years, completing over 40 cruises with Celebrity (the worst ever company...a "never again experience"), P & O. Ocean Village, NCL. Fred Olsen, Star Cruises Etc. Nowadays we don't look anywhere else. We know before we leave, we will not need to pay tips, we will not be paying for refreshments, our account will be in good old United Kingdom Sterling with no "Dollar Inspired add ons" (one of the tricks from the greedy USA owned Cruise companies that seem to have the habit of crashing into things or losing passengers overboard), we will be pampered from the moment we board the plane till we touch down on our return by the fantastice Tui/Marella team. For myself and my wife from July 16th till 30th 2019 we have had the best cruise ever. Well done the Tui/Marella team from our wonderful Karen Crothers and the rest of the staff in our local Tui shop in Newtownards to Captain Alan Macary and his entire crew///abundant thanks....we will return, God willing next year Read Less

Fantastic from start to finish excellent week, Captain Steve & all the crew were amazing, they kept us all entertained, waiters & waitresses, chefs, entertainments crew....everyone so friendly, we were on deck 5, 5013, Lewis looked after us during our stay, lovely friendly guy who was always smiling & eager to help. When we left the ship yesterday Captain Steve & a lot of the crew came to shake our hands & say their goodbyes, it was a lovely personal gesture. Ship is spotless, cabins are lovely, food delicious, something for everyone entertainment was brilliant as well, never a dull moment, again...something to suit all ages. Had a couple of choppy nights which wont put me off cruising again, cant wait to book next one. Only downside was no free wifi, they charge £15 per day for it which I think was really bad, most places offer free wifi so we were out of touch with family back home for the week. On the whole it was one of my best holidays ever, thanks to all who made it so good, tours were very good & we got to see some lovely places Read Less

We chose this cruise as we had done three other cruises with Thomsons and thought the new ships would be an improvement. I have to say we were a little disappointed. Good points were that staff were excellent and the cabin facilities were good and very clean. Service was good. Bad points were the food in the inclusive restaurants was very poor we felt but the service was good. We didn't go in the other restaurants as felt we had paid enough for the holiday without paying more. As another review said we didn't like the fact that customers didn't follow the dress code and were too casual in the main dining room, I.e shorts in the evening. They should have been turned away. If they wanted to be that casual should have eaten in the self service. The shows were boring same old singing and dancing which we get fed up with. The swimming pool area was very noisy during the day and we did not even entertain the idea of sitting there. (There is only one pool). The cabin walls are thin and we could here almost every word from the family from hell next door with their screaming kids who banged and screamed with their mother shouting back. (I do have teenagers and would never have let them have such disrespect of others around them). My daughters bunk bed moved as a result of next doors kids jumping on their beds. Overall we had a good holiday but we thought that the food quality had suffered as a result of All Inclusive and maybe next time will pick an Adults only cruise. Read Less

The cabin was immaculate on arrival and kept up to the same standard throughout our stay a big thank you to Hobir . Overall we had a fantastic holiday and would recommend Marella explorer, the destinations we visited were very enjoyable. This was our 6th cruise and our second with TUI and our first visit to the Eastern Med, The whole of the journey from Belfast to Palma went smoothly, The return flight home was delayed by 2.5 hrs due to a bird strike on the aircraft the day before, The information given to us at Palma was "You know as much as we do" which wasn't very helpfull. This was advertised as Marella Explorer first sailing? The ship was launched in May 1996?? I would rank it as a average cruise ship with nothing exceptional or nothing really bad apart from the things below. Bars -- I found that in all the bars I visited that the staff were very obliging but were very inexperienced The waiter service was slow and that orders were frequently wrong, The bar & waiting staff were also not familiar with the computer terminals that they were using that led to ques forming, on one occasion I noted that there were five staff behind the bar and only one serving and on another I asked for my usual drink and was told that it was not on the all inclusive package and that I would have to upgrade to get it, after I was told this I went to reception to check this out and was told that the bar staff were mistaken. Restaurants Market place- Only ate here a few times and found that the food was genrally good but was let down by food being slowly replaced when required and that some hot food was only luke warm. On one day the only plates that were available for salad and cold meats were just out of the dishwasher and were hot. Latitude 53- The food at latitude 53 was good where we mostly ate Most of the staff here seemed experienced and most orders were served correctly but one lunch time I made the mistake of ordering a Vegeterian Burger after a 20 min wait the waiter apoligised for the delay and said the chef was making it from scratch when it arrived 15 min later I was disappointed to find that it was just fried cooked lentals with a sice of tomato in a burger bun, Definitely not Restaurant quality. Broadway Show lounge The entertainment in the Broadway Show lounge was good and varied we were able to get seats on all the nights we went there except one where we had to stand for half of a poular show, On this night there was a portion of the seating cordoned with a sign saying reserved seating, the next day I questioned this at reception and was told that "It is not possible to reserve seating" I then asked why there was reserved seating the previous night? The receptionist took my cabin number and told me that she would list it as a complaint and get back to me. 10 hrs later I had herd nothing and went back and saw another person and was told that there was no complaint noted and that she would try and find out for me about the reserved seating, After consulting with someone in the back office she came back and said that the seats were probibly reserved for crew members as it was captains night and that if I wanted to see a show that I should arrive earlier to which I replied "Is it TUI policy to put the crews comfort above there passangers" To which there was no reply So I can only assume that this is the case. At 07:00 one morning the captain came over the PA to tell us that we had docked and that we were free to go ashore I asked at destination service (There was a que at reception) why there was a need to make the announcement so early and was told that it was for the benifit of the passengers going on excursions to which I pointed out most were not and what about them, I did not receive a reply. I was considering going on a cruise to the Norwegian Fjords next year but it will not be on the Marella Explorer, Read Less

We chose this cruise because we ha d had a lovely cruise on the Red Sea on the Thomson Celebration. This was a poor imitation. Ther was a long queue to board the ship and they asked for a debit/credit card, which I refused to give them. I had booked an outside cabin for the view, only to be confronted with superstructure and an steel grill. When I enquired about this, I was told I should have paid extra to select a cabin. The cabin was small and cramped and poorly appointed. I had booked All Inclusive", only to find that common British beers and lagers attracted a premium. Seemingly I had booked the wrong "All Inclusive package. Even bottled water had to be paid for. The gin and brandy were of poor quality. there was a ridiculous surcharge of between £15.95 and £19.95 to visit the speciality restaurants. Even in the really good Orion restaurant, a steak was £9.95 extra. A shore excursion was cancelled due to bad weather. When I requested a refund, I was told it was only available back in Britain. I then asked for the money to be transferred to another excursion but was told that I had to pay in full for another trip. Every day, I got a letter asking me to put a debit/credit card or cash which I refused to do. The excursions we took were good. We visited Rome. Pompei, Herculanium, Corsica and Barcelona. Some of the entertainment was good, the theatre shows and the trio in the forward lounge. Some of the waiters left us waiting a long time for service, even though the lounge was not busy. The cabin steward was excellent. I have put my concerns to TUI but they maintain that everything was as it should be. They also refuse to explain why I was charged £50 for a Cuba visa on a previous trip. I will never ever book with TUI again. If you want value for money, do not go on the Marella Nightmare. Read Less

After trying 2 river cruises and loving them, we opted for our 1st sea cruise even though I do not travel well (sea sickness on a flat!), Managed well despite 5 metre waves at one point meaning we had to go to a different port than Croatia which was even nicer to be honest!! Whole experience was fantastic...no problems and all that people have said about the Spirit in a positive way is right! Lovely staff, food, professional excellent shows and a fantastic atmosphere all the time. We stayed for a further 5 days in Palma (lovely hotel) but on a total downer as it was not the cruise ship!! Hubby prefers casual and this was no problem at all... Dead friendly people on ship - passengers and staff. We loved our sea cruise and have pushed the boat out (sorry for pun) and have booked the Baltic Discovery for 28 July 2018. We so loved it. As a person with motion sickness, I had 3 nights where I took spanish sickness tablets (yellow packet) which worked brilliantly. We were told it was unusual to have such high waves etc but its at a time when all weather is a bit weird!! Had a problem with one excursion (Italy on Good Friday) but got full refund and still have a good if not very tiring day (as so busy and active). Food second to none, cabins lovely, entertainment great and weather was lush! Those thinking of going on the spirit - do it / take the plunge you will love it! Read Less

My Wife booked this cruise for my 60th. I have cruised before but she hasn't. Based on that I told her to keep within safe waters like the Eastern Med. Wow... we enjoyed this trip so much. Firstly, I must add we always read reviews and this one did not come out on top, however, many just moaned about the poor deco or tired looking rooms etc. Many stated the cabins were too small and some said it was awful. Well let me assure anybody due out on this Majestic before its decommissioning in October you will not be sorry. Yes, the cabins are small, about the same size as a 2 birth caravan but plenty enough room to sleep and wash. With so much going on in the ship you would be silly to spend your time in your cabin. We choose an inside cabin which saved us money, if you prefer a port hole then pay the extra for the privilege of seeing the sunshine when you wake up. The cabin staff, Philipe & Mohamad could not do enough for us. They leave you alone when you want it, they clean your room if you require it. They leave nice touches such as chocolates on your pillows and turn your clean towels into swans or rabbits etc. The waiters in Seven Seas (our prefered choice) were nothing short of fantastic. I'll let you see what I mean when your there. We cannot comment on the four seasons restaurant because we stayed put in Seven Seas. Before entering any restaurants you will be greeted by the man with the gel, a quick squirt into your hands to ensure cleanliness. The food choice top class, again, will let you see for yourselves. Entertainment on the ship was very good. Live shows every evening in two sittings. Then afterwards another show such as a singer or comedian. We had Phil Doyle, a comedian who will have you in stitches for an hour. Disco's do go on until early morning but cannot comment as we didn't go. We had full board package which included all cocktails unless listed as extras. Drinks package in our view is a must because the prices you see are expensive and it wouldn't take you long before clocking up few hundred quid. To finish off I want you to know we were slightly worried about the reviews we read but so glad we ignored them. Talking to other guests they all said the same, so glad they ignored the negative reviews. My only regret is having a 7 night instead of 14. Can't wait for next cruise and will definitely book with Thompsons again. Happy Cruising. Read Less

This was our first cruise and we were not disappointed, We picked up the ship at Majorca and could not criticise anything. The staff were amazing and great fun. Ova and Mary in the Bar Teams were first class, although all the staff were polite, friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The facilities were excellent, with plenty of places to eat and drink The curry night was fab and the fine dining waiter service was brilliant as well. Our rooms were kept spotless and there was fresh towels and beach towels daily. We went on the Mediterranean cruise and the only disappointment was Morocco, Casablanca. Most cruisers were disappointed with this stop Gibraltar was great fun and we had a great walk up to the cable cars to see the monkeys. You did not need to book trips as you could walk to most places There was a shuttle bus of £6.00 per person to Valencia and Morocco (we would however not recommend walking around in Morocco as we did not find this area safe). Cadiz and Catagena was on the doorstop and there was plenty of shopping to do with some great deals. The boat is cashless and any extras are on the card for your account, This is debited once half way through your trip and then on the last night House cocktails were generally good and you could purchase additional cocktails for £1.50 on top of the Drinks Package. All soft drinks were branded. The only thing that was expensive on board was ice cream. We wasnt sure on dress wear and this was varied. Trousers were required in the waiter service, although these were informal and out son worse smart shorts when he went in to these restaurants. In the buffet style restaurant, where the food was far better than we had experienced at AI hotels, the dress was very casual. There was a wind on board at night and with the air con, it is best to take a cardigan. Embarking and Disembarking was very straight forward and you received itineraries in your room daily with port times to leave and be back on board. The gym was good if you like it, but was little time to attend. Entertainment was varied. There was a discos at night until approx 2.30am AI ended at 2am which was plenty. Just be careful of your mobile roaming on board as this is not treated as EU data at all times. Thomson cruises have got it spot on and we are already planning our next trip. We are hooked Read Less

This was our first ever cruise and were very excited to be on the Thomson Discovery given it was now Thomson's flagship cruise ship. We did not want to get off after the week was over. We were not disappointed. We had a Grand Suite, which made the holiday experience for us and if we cruise again will definitely pay that little extra for a suite. It was very large, with twin sinks in bathroom, a bath, shower, large balcony and a Playstation 3 which kept our 10 year old happy! We travelled out of season when children were at school due to my daughter having chicken pox when were supposed to holiday, so we had to move our holiday; this just meant there weren't many kids on board, so not much going on for them; but the team did their best. Although the games room had around 10 X Box One's in it, none of them worked all week, much to my son's disappointment. All staff on board were helpful, chatty and very attentive. The service in the restaurants was fantastic, and everywhere was spotlessly clean. Our cabin must of been tended to more than twice every day! Milind our cabin attendant was a very nice chap! The only gripe we had was with one of the shore trips we did, not the ship. This was called 'Mount Etna and Sicilian Flavours'. We believed we would visit Mount Etna and do some wine tasting, why wouldn't we think that. What it actually was; was a trip to a vineyard for wine tasting, then back to the ship! This cost us around £140 for 2 adults and 2 children (2 & 10). When we complained back on board, we were told that the vineyard was in the backdrop of Mount Etna! What a rip off.! We did not get our money back and was quite annoyed that our children didn't get a drink or food in the 4 1/2 hour round trip. Thomson need to sort this out as the trip description is very misleading and is definitely NOT a family excursion. We also did Capri as a trip, what a beautiful island this is, a definite if you go to Naples I'd say. Again though, not a cheap trip, around £180 for the four of us. Other than that the only thing I'd say is why should we have to pay for water? We paid a premium for the room and a premium to upgrade to All Inclusive - another thing Thomson have to sort out. To summarise then - food was great, lots of choice, entertainment was very good and always something going on around the ship; shows in the theatre were also very good. Andre the comedian was hilarious, and my son actually got pulled up on stage one night which made his holiday. Choice of drinks on the AI package was very good, but there were a lot of drinks I would have chosen normally (Ale) which were going to cost extra so I didn't bother - but the cocktail selection and bottled beer sufficed. Ignore all the poor reviews, I think these people have simply nothing else to do but moan. This was by far our most enjoyable holiday experience for a long time; if not ever, and one we shall be repeating in the future, it may/may not be with Thomson, but they have definitely wet our appetite for future cruises and overall did a great job. After booking and reading some reviews we were very sceptical. But this was our first cruise and it didn't disappoint in any way. Conflicting reports on the Dress to Impress night. My husband took his dinner suit and got the chance to wear it and there were plenty of dinner suits and evening dresses and cocktail dresses around and most people dressed appropriately. Food was very varied and in the main good quality. Booking a table for two can be a bit arduous but stand your ground you either get you or go away with a pager. Sharing a table with others is a bit of a gamble especially if you get landed with people who have sailed the seven seas give a full commentary on every ship and do nothing but compare. Having said that we met some lovely interesting people on this cruise. We found staff could not do enough for us especially my husband favourite bar man Stanislav in the live lounge knew our favourite tipple after first night. We had one mishap during the cruise in our cabin a drainage problem in the shower cubicle. Our cabin stewart Faruhdin took control got us a plumber and quickly sorted. We went all inclusive and paid for drinks package well worth it only downside had to pay for bottled water and if you wanted canned drinks. Meals in buffet resteraunt Islands could be a cattle market at peek times. Entertainment mixed but in the main a good stand. We have booked for Discovery 2 for next year. Trips were interesting but some quite long and tiring. My husband had tried for years to get me on a cruise but I hate being on water could not believe how I adjusted to it and had no sea sickness at all so all you potential first time cruisers go for it! This was our first time on a cruise, and was a little nervous as I have Crohn's disease and suffer with sea sickness. We booked this as a package 7 night cruise with 7 night stay. We got married the day before and booked a blessing at sea as we have both been married before. From the minute we arrived in Majorca, the staff we so attentive and very clear upon the instructions upon checking in on the boat. The reception staff were friendly and couldn't do more to help. We meet with Craig Cook the social welfare member who did everything to arrange our blessing at sea. He arranged for a special dietary needs message sent to all restaurants, beautiful fresh flowers for our blessing and a wonderful cake. The housekeepers Charlie and Elmsd kept everything in tip top shape, different towel animals made everyday, even balloons and decorations on the day of our blessing. The captains dinner was brilliant, some of the waiters sang to the whole restaurant really brightening everyone's spirits. The entertainment team couldn't do enough, so ,uch choice throughout the whole ship. The captains daily updates were very informative. The best holiday to date and definitely booking again. Read Less

we chose this cruise as we were on the dream last year and thoroughly enjoyed every minute. We did excursions and tried all the restaurants, we did not do the captains dinner night. On the discovery we decided that we would do our own trips and that worked out very well, we could go where we wanted and was not on a time scale. We were looking forward to the captains night and you could imagine our dismay when we were told that they were trying to do away with the formal night. It was so good on the night to see so many in their best dress, men in dinner suits and ladies in formal dresses, please dont do away with the formal night. We had some really nice meals, we highly recommend the glass house for dinner, this was superb. The onboard shows were very good, although the seating did not seem to be enough, there were people standing, this is one of my critiscisms of the cruise, lack of seating in many areas. My other moan if you like is for the size of the ship I dont think there were enough staff to cater to all the passengers. We had a deluxe cabin with a balcony, this was beautiful, and the steward kept it immaculate. The ship was very clean. I was disappointed in the lack of communication with the crew, no crew came to us and asked about our experience or if we needed anything. We felt they were just catering to the big groups that were on board. We are booked onto another cruise for next year, so lets see how that is. Up to now the Dream is our favourite. Read Less

This was recommended to us as the one, very disappointing .the entertainment was rubbish same turns every night just a video playing and far too loud. The worst cruise ever .the ship is nice but needs a lot to improve .also a lack of toilets only every other floor and the only three per unit causing queues. my wife fell coming out of the theatre and was badly injured ,on contacting reception we were not even asked if we needed to see a doctor and left to ourselves to sort it until we arrived home and then spent the first day home at hospital for treatment and exrays. as we could not go out on the trips due to my wife injury we could only sit out on the decks even then there were two men fighting over sun beds .we also had to contact reception 2.30 am to visit next door cabin to stop the loud music and noise other people had gone back to there cabin to party. We went away to rest and had a total nightmare of a cruise. Read Less

My wife and I have cruised with Thomson 8 times and have always enjoyed them. We decided to 'splash out' and book a balcony cabin on the Discovery. After reading some of the reviews about kids running wild, not getting drinks at the bar, waiting hours for meals, we wondered if we had made a mistake, we definitely hadn't. Our early morning flight from Gatwick went like clockwork, on arriving at Palma our suitcases were on the belt before we got there ( Definitely a first) a quick coach ride to the terminal, no queues at registration, straight onto the ship with luggage already outside our cabin door. We had read about not being able to book the speciality restaurants, so we went straight to level 5 and booked both on the new inter-active booking screens, we could have booked any day or time we wanted. Although it was the last week of the school holidays there were only about 40-50 children on board and no problem whatsoever. We never had to wait at any bar for a drink, the Islands self service restaurant was busy for breakfast but tables were cleared immediately people left them. In the evening we did have to wait for a table in the MDR and were asked if we wanted a table for 2 or sit with others, if we sat with others we waited a max. of 10 mins. on our own about 15 - 20 mins. We were given pagers to alert us when a table was ready. The food was good and varied, the waiters served the wine that kept flowing and some nights a pianist was playing. We had meals in both the Kora-La and surf and turf, both very much worth the extra payment. We went into the show lounge every evening and no problem getting a seat, the shows were good with a very funny comedian one night and a very clever mentalist another. As returning customers we were invited to a champagne reception with the captain and officers which was very unexpected. We were constantly looking for faults but quite honestly it was definitely on a par with our other Thomson cruises which were all great. Reading some of the other reports I sometimes wonder if they were on the same ship or just like to gripe at the slightest thing. Our balcony was lovely, to sit out in the sun with drink in hand thinking about what to do next. Don't listen to the moaners, you are on holiday just enjoy it. We will definitely return. Read Less

I've cruised a number of times before with other companies and I have to say this was the worst cruise ever! The staff can't do enough and were very friendly but, the accommodation is very dated and poor, the food was luke warm at best and complaints were made, and did improve a little on the second week. The ship it self is small and cramped in high season, and the swimming pools are tiny. The entertainment was good but to much of the same themes. Ports of call the first week were again nit the best and I wouldn't recommend Tangier has you are made to walk through the local fish market before you reach the end of the port. Shuttle buses were provided in some of the ports but not here, and you were made to pay for some of them. Thomson are charging a 5 star price and offering a 2 star holiday! If you are looking to book a cruise keep to the companies that provide what you pay before. Read Less

Enjoyed the experience with excellent service and first class entertainment. The cabin we had with a balcony was comfortable and always clean. The food and service was outstanding with a very varied menu. We took the drink package which was outstanding value. We went on 3 excursions which were good value for money with very good guides who were very knowledgeable and the transport very comfortable. The restaurant staff could not do enough for you or fill your glass quick enough. Reviews following the commissioning of the ship were not very good and I know they have done a lot of work to put some things right and I would disregard previous reviews if you intend to use this ship. We would have no reservations using this ship again and would recommend it to family and friends. I would like to thank the Discovery crew and staff for a very enjoyable and relaxing holiday and wish them all the best for the future. Read Less

Celebrating my 70th Birthday and also my wifes on the same day we chose Thomsons "new" ship the Discovery, it turned out to be a great decision, a goof flight on the dream liner but a slow embarkation due to the massive numbers on the school holidays surge. The restaurants were all good, ok we had some waiting for the Gallery where we had lovely breakfasts, the food was fine and varied, we also went to the surf and turf for my birthday bash and it was great for a small surcharge, that and the Indian needs to be booked straight away on the screens as it gets full almost immediately. We went to all to all the live shows in the theatre and enjoyed them all with a superb and talented cast. The sail aways on the deck were great fun with the Reggae band. We would have given 5 stars but the swimming pool issues were just awful the kids and the teenagers, out of control, and unsupervised by the parents ( what a surprise ) and any staff, 600 of them but none to watch over both pools, they were bombing in, using high pressure water guns, flotation devices, snorkeling, ball games, you name it inc throwing ice around in the indoor ( glass house ) We mentioned this to the Captain at a meeting were previous Thomson supporters were invited. My wife told the Captain in no uncertain terms how bad things were, so our advice is that do NOT go in the summer school holidays. They should make the indoor pool for adults or at least some adults only hours. The Cabins with the a Balcony were very good and we had a first class steward - Maria and ok the shower is a bit small with a curtain, but for 7/14 days just deal with it. To reiterate we had a really nice time, we enjoyed it and will try it again on the Discovery but deff not in the school term holidays. Read Less

The following opinions are my own, if you want to know how this ship suits you personally, then book a cruise on it. We booked this holiday as we normally sail on larger ships and thought that this re-vamped mid size ship might suit us. THE BOOKING - big black mark to Thomson holidays, the web site is a disaster as you cannot do everything on line, and you cannot make your final payment on line. This meant several phone calls and a total of five invoices until they got it right. THE FLIGHT - No problems with the flight although luggage at Palma took an hour and at Leeds Bradford on return luggage took one and a half hours. (Not Thomson's fault) EMBARKATION - Because of luggage delays there were few people in the embarkation when we arrived so this was quick and easy. THE CABIN - This was the smallest cabin we have ever had and had it been laid out as a twin there would not have been the problem of my wife banging her head and ankle when visiting the loo in the night. The gap between the corner of the bed and the dressing table and high cupboard was only 7 inches. For your information there were 24 multi-purpose hangers in the wardrobe - plenty for some but not my wife (We always take a dozen with us). There are four sockets in the cabin -2 European and 2 American so if like us you have 2 phone, 2 I-pads and electric toothbrushes, take both lots of adaptors. The hairdryer was adequate but could have been upgraded. The cabin had great air-con/heating system. There is a shaver socket in the bathroom but you may well have to search for it, - ours was right at the top of the shelf unit. The safe was in a cupboard above the dressing table, be aware it was mounted at a height suitable for tall people only- I am 5'8" and it was above my eye line and my wife is only 5' - no chance. The bathroom was OK although the water to the wash basin was luke warm the shower was piping hot although you are soon cooled when attacked by the clingy shower curtain (Why not plastic doors? I ask). The ship is 21 years old and it shows where panels in the shower are bubbled and woodwork could do with new varnish. On the whole it was OK for two weeks. THE SHIP- This has been nicely done with Tui's new colours on the outside and a re-vamp of all the communal areas. The atrium is nice although there is not enough seating, the live room is cold, the theatre is excellent and Bar 11 is great especially when you can get a window seat (We saw whales one evening). DINING - Restaurant 47 has excellent food although if you wish to dine about 8 o'clock on a table for two you need to be there a lot earlier as the were long waits (In some cases an hour) and it is easier to state that you are happy to share and you could end upon a table for 4,6 8 or even 10. Great for meeting new people and having a good chat. Unfortunately you can end up with the Mr and Mrs Grumble or the Mr and Mrs We've done 500 cruises. Gallery 47 is based on Italian food and the menu changes Mid week. The snack shack has sandwiches, salads, fruit and a few hot stuff such as Fish'n'chips, burgers, hot dogs ideal for a quick lunch time snack. We paid to dine in the Surf and Turf for our 40th anniversary. Food was brilliant although the promise of something special for 'occasions' did not materialise. (They got a birthday cake on the next table). Islands Self Service is ideal for breakfast with all that you could want in cereals, meats and cheeses, Full English etc. - however for little people (like my wife it was not always possible to see what containers held as they were too high up. This area gets very busy and at times there were no tables available - more seating required. SERVICE - The crew, waiters, and cabin staff were generally very good and happy although one or two needed to be encouraged to smile more. It was interesting to learn by speaking to them how many are on a ship for the first time - quite surprising as this is meant to be Thomson's Flag Ship. Gold Star for Raphael in 47 restaurant - always had a smile and a joke and remembered many peoples names after the first meeting. Our cabin staff could not do enough and of course there was the obligatory towel folding to make monkeys, crayfish and dogs etc. The entertainment staff - I cannot comment as we saw very little of them and the usual interaction between them and guest appeared very limited. ENTERTAINMENT - The shows in the theatre were excellent as were the guest singers and comedians. The pianist and the trio performing in the Atrium were gentle and soothing and the saxophonist in Bar 11 was wicked. We are not fans of Virtual entertainment so much of the Live Room did not interest us and I was disappointed that there was no proper roulette table (Saved me a fortune though). PORTS and EXCURSIONS - Pretty standard for cruise lines nothing dramatic to report. OVERALL - When we booked the only option was 'Free All Inclusive'. Later there were offers at a lower price with the option of paying to upgrade to All Inclusive. We felt slightly cheated as we are not big drinkers and the up grade price of £920 for two people for two weeks would have been a big saving to us (even another week in the sun somewhere). WOULD WE GO AGAIN - We met many regular Thomson Cruisers on this trip some were happy some were not, We will probably stick with bigger ships and the likes of P&O but try it for yourself you may love it.
