This was the year of the great French roast, Paris at 35ºC and similar to that all the cruise long. The payback was clear blue skies, no rain and great photos. The ship was 100% full, hence the service levels in the public areas were stretched. This cruise is a mixture of great French wines and cheeses (approx 450 different cheeses to be tasted), as far as scenery goes the highlights are the cities. The visit to an old hospital and nearby wine tasting at Marche aux Vin was very interesting, as was our first tasting of French nougat which is based on egg white and honey, as was the truffle farm (with charming hosts & dog). The Sundowners excursion (a walk to a nearby fortress tower) for wine/beer/nibbles with live musicians in a cool afternoon breeze was very hard to take. The itinerary was exactly as published. Compliments have to be given to all the bus drivers - they were very professional, safe drivers who helped some of our fellow passengers with their walkers. Driving through the French countryside was most enjoyable. Read Less

We enjoyed the cruise very much. It was our first time to Europe and our first Viking experience. There was not enough room on the sundeck for the majority of people. Some people grabbed the best seats and tables and held them for their friends who sometimes weren't there yet. I was surprised how many locks and low bridges we had to go through. The sundeck was closed off completely for about 5 days. So it was hard to get much sun & exercise. There were usually 4-5 buses that took us on the excursions. There were A, B, C, D & sometimes E. For some reason, we were never on Bus A or B. We purchased the thumb drive with our tour pictures. There were many pictures of some people and very few of others. The main guide seemed to have taken the pictures and was never on our bus. The food and service was excellent. The attendants were all very polite. Read Less

This cruise fitted our timetable and needs as seniors. The package was - flights, full board and excursions. Our guide flew with us from Israel to Amsterdam where we got on a bus for a panoramic trip and later on to out embarkation in Utrecht. It was smooth. Cabins are small, carpet worn out, not enough sockets (only two) for todays' equipment. Food was plenty and tasty. The service in the dining room was excellent. Other services were good except cleaning the cabin. Shore excursions were too short (1-3 hours). One at least was really bad as it took part on a Sunday morning at 0800 (am) in Koblenz when the city was till fast asleep. The guide, Gady Michaeli was EXCELLENT. Quite a few from the travelers had mobility problems and/or were traveling alone. He did his best to help with grace and understanding. His explanations were accurate, good sense of humor too. While sailing on the Mine the deck was closed due to low bridges which was a bummer, but those bridges are old... All in all it was a satisfactory cruise. Read Less

This cruise met our requirement to stay away from central Europe yet experience a part of the old world that we had not yet discovered completely. The air travel to and from overseas I could do without. Even though we had up-graded seats the space was very tight in both width and knee room. The food left a lot to be desired. There was a problem with providing our travel documents and they did not arrive until six days before we left. We stayed in Lisbon for two days and the hotel was very nice and we managed to do and see a lot that was new to us. At the end of the cruise we stayed two days in Santiago, Spain. The hotel was very nice and again an awful lot to see that was a new experience for us. Both hotels were withing reasonable walking distance to the major attractions. We included these stays as we do not believe it is cost effective to fly/visit Europe for less than 15 days. The ship was new and in very good condition. Boarding was easy and we were treated well by all crew and staff members. The cruise director assisted us in rearranging our return flight to eliminate a 4 hour drive at two in the morning to catch a plane home. Our cabin was clean and well appointed and our needs there were well taken care of. The food served was very good and the all male, older waiters were something new and they did a magnificent job. However, for some reason the wine service came up a bit short and not what we have experienced on other Viking cruises. I could almost call this a bus tour, as almost every port required a bus ride of from one to three hours each way to reach the site of our visit. The locations were amazing and the scenery along the river was some of the best that we have experienced. A Viking staff member accompanied us (a group of about 10) from our hotel to the airport, took us inside, led us to the processing for our flights, helped us through security and wished us a good voyage home. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience and we look forward to our next cruise with Viking. Read Less

We had heard so much about this cruise and it lived up to our expectations! Beautiful medieval cities, the gorgeous cathedrals, the palaces, so lovely amidst the beautiful river settings. The staff was wonderful as per usual, (we had sailed on a river cruise to France), but the staff this time seemed very tired and a bit overworked. They were rather impersonal but did their jobs. The food was delicious but when German cuisine was not to our liking there was always a lovely rib eye available! Viking aims to please and it was evident in the Waite staff, we had two favorites who took such good care of us we wanted to bring them home with us! The excursions were well done with knowledgable tour guides. The only thing I think Viking could improve on is on-board entertainment. They had a wonderful piano player but don't expect much more. He did not seem to care, taking turns as fast as he could. I hope you look into this driver before he kills someone! Crew was wonderful, accommodating, and gracious. They seemed to know what we wanted before we did. Cabin was always nice and clean. Bartender was terrific, and such a good memory. The excursions were so informative, getting us all in touch with history and the beautiful country of France. The guides spoke great English and were there to make sure we all had a good time. What a nice touch to be greeted with a warm terry towel when returning from an outing. We will definitely recommend Viking to friends and family, the service is unsurpassed! Read Less

Definitely a top-notch cruise ship and cruise line. The pros included friendliness of all staff, ports and scenery (the light presentation at Rouen cathedral at night is a must-see!). Aquavit Terrace for dining in the evening is apparently a well-kept secret. We actually dined there almost as many nights as in the formal dining room....a fabulous experience to enjoy gourmet food al fresco on the bow of the ship while cruising at dusk.....however less than a dozen fellow passengers partook in this option on the nights we dined outside. The cons included having a few tour guides that almost ruined our experience: one on Giverny excursion who liked to hear himself talk, dragged the group along and whose French-accented English was very difficult to understand (and I even speak French). We finally broke away from group and toured garden and house on our own. The second guide on the Normandy excursion was completely offensive as she opted to use the long bus ride to get on her soapbox and offer political opinions that were clearly inappropriate. It takes a lot to offend my husband and he was livid. As much as I would like to say that I would recommend a Viking Cruise to adults over 50 I really feel that if we ever have the opportunity to experience Viking again (and we hope to), it'll be at least ten years before we do so. We're both 56 and were often frustrated by older passengers for whom we had to wait, and slowed down our excursions. I love and enjoy senior travelers but we wanted to pack as much as we could in this once-in-a-lifetime trip, and felt we could have easily done more if we hadn't felt pulled back. Read Less

We chose Viking from friends recommendations, and we liked that they published prices online without going through 'request a quote' delays. It was our honeymoon, and literally everything about the cruise was fantastic. The staff, from Nick our program director to the cleaning crews, were the best. The food, quantity and quality as well as quality wines, etc. we're all top quality. We chose the upgrade for $150 each to include upgraded liquor for the week. That included top shelf cognac bourbon and an array of the best alcoholic beverages. The view of castles and the wine country along the Rhine were breathtaking. We very much enjoyed the tours in various cities including Heidelburg and Cologne. We give the Viking organization the highest rating in every aspect, and we both really couldn't come up with any suggestions that could have improved our 'over the top' experience. Even the weather was perfect. Read Less

You only have once chance to make a good first impression. Many of us had traveled many hours and arrived in Lucerne, tired and a little bit "cranky". We were anxious to get on our coach for the transfer to Basel and Emerald Dawn. Emerald's representative at the airport, Yvonne, was welcoming and pleasant. Unfortunately she didn't know where our coach was. First it was stuck in traffic (10:00 am Saturday morning?), Then "we aren't certain where it is". Finally it is in the airport and doesn't know where we are. Similar occurrence for guests arriving later. Their delay (over two hours) caused them to miss the light lunch by about twenty minutes and having the beer or wine charged to their room. CD Michael should have taken care of this. That having been said, Emerald Dawn was a great ship with a wonderful crew. Everything was remarkably clean and "fresh" appearing. Room was immaculate , spacious with great balcony and very efficient bath. Breakfast was nicely handled with a large buffet in the main dining room and or a light continental version in the lounge area with access to the open decks. Tours were well organized and had the advantage of starting at "civilized" hours like 9:00 am. Guides were fluent in English, knowledgeable of the local area and offered helpful suggestions for free time exploration. Lunch and dinner were well prepared with many options. Local wines and beers readily available for these meals. The pool and movie area are certainly unique on Emerald and offer a special experience. Thoroughly enjoyed the itinerary and staff of Emerald Dawn. Read Less

Having heard Uniworld was supposed to be a large cut ahead of the rest, I decided to explore Spain and Portugal on a cruise tour from Madrid to Lisbon. The tour director and organization of the sightseeing were outstanding. The Duoro River is definitely not a tourism area, so there was no local entertainers; in fact, there was nothing to do after dinner. Women would dance together in the lounge. That is the one negative. Food and sevice were excellent for the size of the crew. Dinner could be very slow. Travel companions were fun and interesting, about a third American and Canadian, one third British and the other third Australian and New Zealanders. The sites were beautiful. The wineries looked beautiful but the product was only fair. Tours in metropolitan areas were very interesting and enjoyable. We saw a variety of towns from medieval times and contemporary. We saw two impressive universities. We saw where and got an idea of how Jews were excluded during the Inquisition. I enjoyed the cruise but would appreciated a larger room with better storage. it was recommended by our travel agent. It was certainly an excellent experience. staff was excellent and very friendly. Embarkation details was not very details. We were told to have coach transfer to the spaceship at 3.30 pm at the Double Tree by Hilton. However, the exact location was not mentioned in the document sent to us. We accidentally got off the lift at the wrong floor on the way out of the hotel after breakfast. The departure was actually 3.00 pm. The cabin was small but satisfactory for a cruise ship. However, for the extra money we pay for the Junior suite, there is not a lot more space in the room. The balcony was just wide enough for a chair. However, It was exceptional experience from then on. Evening Entertainment, daily free choice were very high standard and certainly above expectation.Staff was very friendly and helpful. Nothing is too much of trouble except that they prefer you to make cups of tea except at meal time. Two possible consideration for the company to consider;- 1) If wine and alcohol are not part of the all-inclusive price, it will cater for the non-drinker and keep the cost of the cruise down. 2) Having the same breakfast for 14 days is a bit much. Food sometimes can be a bit salty and other times, a bot bland. Overall, very enjoyable experience. Read Less

After doing 3 previous Viking Cruises, we believed that this relatively new itinerary would be interesting and that Viking would provide a good experience and it did not disappoint on most levels. Hotels were in excellent locations, tours were interesting and gave great overviews of historical sites, etc. Busing from Prague to Krakow and Krakow to Warsaw provided adequate stops for snacks or stretching legs. In addition, bus trips always provided a stop in a town that allowed for exploration and lunch--good way to break up the trip, eventhough Viking buses are large and comfortable. Viking did a great job of breaking up groups into smaller, manageable ones that allowed for plenty room on the bus. Even had Polish vodka provided when the trip to Warsaw ended up being longer that projected due to traffic problems. Only real issue was the Viking representative who met us at the airport for departure--showed us to the wrong check in line and then disappeared on us even when he said he would be around to check on us. All in all, a great trip--so much to see and do and carried out with Viking efficiency. No water problems--fortunately, a whole day of heavy rains allowed us to go all the way down the Elbe even though we were given a warning a week ahead of time that the river could pose a problem. As far as cabins go I am so glad I was travelling alone there is barely enough room for one person especially the shower . The meals were ok German sausages were bland spicy sausages were one step above bland . I must say the ship was always clean and smooth on the river , staff was outstanding and always on time for every event . Entertainment was excellent , bar staff was fun . Getting back to the food breakfast was always a dissapointment unless you were there early before the dining hall filled up with smoke supper was also marginal . Read Less

Amazing staff who cannot do enough to help, they work very long hours but always have a smile for you. The boat is dated, the rooms and bathroom are really tiny, but well equipped, no bar fridge in the room, the food on board is excellent, the dining room is lovely, the bar is also nice but on the small side. The top deck has very basic relax chairs, but once again the deck service on board is outstanding. The smoking area at the rear of the boat is an issue, I think the entire boat should be 100% non smoking, as several guests including myself found the cigarette smoke offensive. The included shore excursion's tours are good, the older guests enjoy being taken around in a big bus but if you are young at heart you might find the bus trips a bit tiresome. We enjoyed the cycle rides, and hoped we might have had some more fun activities, but we understood that the age group is older and their mobility is not that great. Read Less

Booked on early bird discount- airfare was terrific, booked through Viking and paid to have airline of our choice, airports and extension of dates. Flew to Zurich and spent 3 days before taking train to Basel for ship. Traveling with another couple- we were able to take excursions in the same group. Restaurant was terrific- food and service was excellent, cruise director was great, everything on the cruise was just as advertised. We had lowest priced cabin which was clean and comfortable- a little small, but most of the cabins were the same size. The local guides for the excursions were very knowledgable and the group size, and hearing devices were perfect for the old town and other small venues we visited. We had gorgeous clear weather for the narrated trip along the Rhine for the castles. On the basis of that trip, we have booked a Viking ocean cruise next year. Read Less

For us the best parts were the sail though the German Forest, Wachau Valley and the Romantic Rhine. The crew were professional, friendly and attentive with every activity including embarkation and disembarkation were very well managed and executed. The cabin was excellent and the food was well presented. One sour note which everyone should note. The back two rows of cabins on the middle deck were badly affected by engine noise especially during the night. Especially when navigating the 64 locks on the trip. Passengers in two of the four cabins were actually moved to other cabins because of the noise. Scenic should not sell these two rows at the same price as the others further from the engine or should at least tell everyone about the noise. Andrew Burke Read Less

This was our fifth cruise with Viking. We love them and, as usual, they did a great job. The trip began with several days in Moscow at the beginning and several in St. Petersburg at the end. In between, we sailed on rivers and canals through rural Russia. Moscow was neat. Seeing places like the Kremlin, St. Basil's, and Lenin's tomb was memorable. The night cruise on the Moscow River with the city all illuminated was a highlight. St. Petersburg is spectacular. It is dominated by the wide Neva River with palaces and government buildings on both sides. Catherine's Palace outside the city is a mini-Versailles and it is incredible to believe it was built twice: The original was destroyed in WWII and completely rebuilt. In between these two cities the sights were, generally, not as interesting. It took a while for us to accommodate to the fact that tourist infrastructure in Russia is simply not nearly as developed as in Western Europe. Whereas in France we sailed from one charming village to another, in Russia we stopped at ports which showed us what they had. And, in many cases that was another Russian Orthodox church. While many of these were really beautiful, after a while we were tired of learning the differences between 16th and 17th century Russian icons. But, it is what it is. This country is still emerging from decades of Soviet rule. Still, in the rural portion of the trip, there were some fascinating things to see, including the island of Kizhi (I recommend readers Google it.) Good souvenir shopping in Mandrogy. We, also, visited a Russian family and, through their translator daughter, heard first hand about life in the USSR and the difficult transition after 1989. They showed great resilience and have done fine. The Viking guides were great and we learned much about Russian history, cuisine, dance, etc., etc. They did extended lectures on the Soviet period, the fall of the USSR, and the last 25 years, including the current regime of Putin. I would have given this an Excellent rating if not for the middle portion of the trip which was not what we have enjoyed on other Viking cruises. But, that is not the fault of Viking, it is simply the current state of this formerly Communist nation. Read Less

Seemed like a romantic and interesting cruise. It was between this and the Danube, this time. We had never done a cruise of any kind before. It was recommended by several people from a previous vacation in Europe. The longship Kara, being new was flawless as was the manuovering of the Captain & crew. It was almost impossible to tell whether we were docked or moving without looking out. I guess this is one benefit of a riverboat cruise. We loved it. However I think we do end up getting shorted at the port of embarkation and the port where we end the cruise. Other than that, the cruise was wonderful, the service was great and so was the food quality, as well as the variety. I think the lounge liquor should also be included in the normal service. Lounge seating does not allow for all the customers to be there at the same time as there is not enough seating. Lounge music was very pleasant. The scenery along the way was beautiful, as was the transportation at each port that we docked at. We would do it again in another location Read Less

The ship was sparkling clean and recently launched. Our cabin was small but certainly adequate with the balcony. The food varied from good to fair, mostly better than worse. There is a limited choice of entrees but most of the time one could find something appealing. The entertainment and activities were the high point of the cruise. The tours, both daily and optiona,l were mostly outstanding. Tour guides were almost without exception wonderful. I would say that avoiding the optional tours which require long bus rides, particularly the first day, is a good idea. It would be difficult to pick out the best of the optional tours as most of them were outstanding. The service was outstanding. The service givers were mostly Eastern European and extremely pleasant, friendly and efficient. We enjoyed getting to know several of the meal servers. I will say I wasn't happy with the first day. We arrived in Nueremberg to find an airport full of people waiting with Viking representatives. We waited probably another 45 minutes and were led to the buses. The rumor was that we were going to briefly stay at a hotel before we went to the ship. It turns out we stopped at a hotel to pickup other passengers and drove more than 2 hours to where the ship was tied up, due to high water. We were led onto the ship but our baggage was piled up probably 80-90 yards from the ship and it stayed there while we checked in. Then very, very slowly with 2-3 employees and one cart, the bags were brought to the ship. We waited and waited. By the time mine arrived it was somewhat part the start of dinner time. No time to change after nearly 24 hours on the plane. Most of this was really no one's fault, given the high water, although I think the communication was very poor at the beginning and why not pile the luggage right by the ship initially where it would be easily and quickly accessible. As I mentioned above there was some variation in the quality of the food. I would also say unless you intend on doing some substantial drinking the wine and beer served with the meal was fine without the premium alcohol package. The quality of the wine and beer was OK but not great, for someone who enjoys fine wine or premium beer it might be an issue. We bought a drinks, here and there, which ended up costing us way, way less than the cost of the package which was fine for us as we aren't energetic drinkers. Read Less

Free snacks and drink bar always open with soda water, coffee and latte. Interesting lectures at night. At some ports we had local dancers and entertainers. Most shows were very good. Ship docked at a port in town most of the time so it usually was a short walk to the cities center. We never needed to take a taxi to get to a town. Food in towns was cheap and very good. for the experience of a river cruise we chose this one. The length seemed right and we wanted to see the south. Being able to do a pre & post stay was also why we selected this cruise. We have done about 10 cruises in the past- but not a river cruise until now. We knew very little about thye geography and did not do any extra research before we came down. The cruise tours hae helped us learn alot about this part of the country and the history. The beds are comfortable and the staff have been friendly and very helpful so far. the food is pretty good too. Including wine & beer with meals is nice as well. I have had soup a couple of times that thas not been hot but most things are served at the correct temperature. I also noticed flies on the food in the buffet table- but this would be very ahrd to manage considering the heat and the open air. Read Less

I am reviewing this sailing even though we were on the ship 3 nights. The Amber is a beautiful new ship and her cabins are spacious and plenty of storage including under the bed. Speaking of beds, the bed in our cabin was FANTASTIC. Such a luxurious feel to it and it had motor control for each side. The bathroom, especially the shower, was very nice, roomy and had several shower heads. Absolutely lovely!!. The staff were wonderful, courteous, friendly and helpful. The food was ok and prepared well. I loved the fact that I could have tea or an espresso throughout the day. The reason we were only on the ship a total of 3 nights is the river was high; specifically the Danube and Main rivers. We spent the first night on the ship and we were able to board the ship the last two days of our trip. I am giving the food just a ok is that the cruise line was running out of food and they did the best they could with what they had. I'm not complaining it was good but not to the standards of a luxury river cruise. I would sail Scenic again because of the limited experience we had on the ship we know we would love it if it were a longer sailing. Read Less

The ports and excursions were very informative and fun to be there. The flooding of the river kept us from cruising along the whole river which i was really disappointed with. We transferred ships because we could not fit under the bridges and the transfer was amazingly smooth i was amazed., Although, I was really disappointed we did miss a lot of the cruise time.
