The Puketi Forest once covered most of the Bay of Islands. It is peppered with majestic kauri trees, which rival California's redwoods in height and girth, as well as impressive tree ferns. Helen guided us along the boardwalk. She did her best to cover as much as she could on this 30-minute (too short) stop. She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the trees, plants and birds and had had taken the time and trouble to pick some leaves, seeds and kauri resin for us to see, touch and smell. Read Less

Combo with the Glow-worm cave. The Forest is outstanding but the driver and tour guide gave us little time to explore and cut short a very educational and well delivered tour by the local rangers. Really!!!?

We saw Kerikeri (historic site), Puketi Forest with the huge kauri trees and umbrella ferns, and went to a Maori meeting house where we went through the welcoming ceremony by everyday Maoris (meaning not in costume and doing what they do to greet any group of visitors).
