If your New Zealand cruise stops in Bay of Islands, the Kawiti Glow-worm Caves are a unique shore excursion that will allow you to descend deep into caverns inhabited by an incredible number of glow-worms, creating one of New Zealand's natural wonders.

Did the small group tour. The Kawiti Glow Worm Caves are still privately owned by the descendants of a Maori chieftain who had fought against the British. Some of the cave was closed due to flooding. The 40-minute tour is along a narrow boardwalk and guests must negotiate 150 steps, with only a few hand-held lamps to light the way. I managed to cope despite my dodgy knee and slight claustrophobia. Our guide (Harry) was friendly and knowledgeable, providing lots of interesting facts about the local Maori people, caves and glow worms. At two spots the lamps were turned off and you could really see the glow-worm lights against the limestone roof walls, reminiscent of the milky way, with some stunning ‘glowing’ stalactites and stalagmites. On the way out, we spotted the resident eel which lives in a small stream that runs through the caves. Photography is not allowed inside, but postcards are available to buy. Read Less

The glow worm caves were really fun.
Sail Date: February 2018
The glow worm caves were really fun. Afterwards we stopped at the Puketi Forest, which included a guided walk. I had hoped to take a longer walk on our own, but it was a group experience....the trees were very large and nice to see.

We were told we had to see the glow worms and we are glad we did.
Sail Date: March 2015
We were told we had to see the glow worms and we are glad we did. Also went to the forest which was excellent as well. Final stop was a spectacular view of the harbor. One of our favorite tours here and worth it!
