Great tour.

Great tour. Just check return time. We went straight to the ship when our excursion ended. We boarded the Equinox at 3:17pm. All aboard was 3:30pm. Any travel delay and we would have been in trouble.

I love Ancient History. We spent over half our time in transit for this Mayan Ruin. When we got there, our tour guide didn’t really show us the main parts but continued to direct us to the small outer areas. He also didn’t let anyone know how to ride the shuttle to and from the location so it was a tremendous amount of waking. We didn’t feel as if we were able to see everything because the tour guide talked we think 20 minutes or more too long. Read Less

which was the only stop we'd visited on previous cruises. It was also the only stop on which we bought a ship excurion - a trip to the Tulum ruins. We went with the ship on that one because the logistics of getting to Tulum were more complicated (two ferry rides and two bus rides), and we didn't want to risk being independent of the ship's responsibility for that. We were in the first group to leave the ship, the first ferry to the mainland, and the last ferry back to Cozumel - it really was a full day. The excursion itself was pretty good, with information about the Mayans and the site. We had time to use the beach, but the lack of a changing facility and the crowded beach dissuaded us. The only (minor) downside was the attempt by the guide to sell us customized Mayan jewelry. Read Less

I am giving this an average because it was cool to see, but the experience was closer to poor. The ferry I took made me sick, the car ride was a little unnerving, then of the time I got to spend at the ruins I had to spend it with a guide giving us a verbose history of the place so that he could earn a tip (nothing that I couldn't have looked up on Google). I had almost no time to walk around on my own, read the placards, explore. Read Less

Since this was not booked through our ship, there were a few others with us, and we were not met at our ship's dock. However, the group size was only 16, and it turned out that most of us were from the same cruise. Our guide/leader got us all efficiently onto the 45 minute Fast Ferry over to Playa del Carmen, and from there into our mini-bus. He gave good information on the 45 minute drive up to Tulum. There we were turned over to another guide who is hired by the site, who took us for about a 45 minute tour of the area and explained the history of Tulum and the Maya. Then we were left on our own to explore (and swim at the beach if we wanted) for about another 45 minutes. When we all met up again, we had a very quick demo of cacao cooking and tasting, and a very quick tequila tasting. We had about 5 minutes to buy something, then we were off on the bus back to the ferry and ship. Read Less

Even if you do not normally get sea sick, take some Dramamine before or after this ride or just keep your eyes closed because the ride can be rough. Once back on the mainland though, the hour-ish ride on the coach bus was wonderful and the site itself is beautiful. I learned a lot from out tour guide and the views were stunning. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and gave us all the information we needed, kept us safe, entertaining and gave us space to explore on our own. Tulum was a bit overcrowded for my taste and in my opinion not worth the time involved to get there compared to ruins accessible from other ports. The MSC guide was okay, but did not hold my interest. We spent most of our time walking on our own then going back to the commercial area for drinks and lunch. This is a long day tip from Cozumel and I would only recommend it on a ship organized excursion. The bus ride was only about an hour each way, but the 45 minute ferry ride over to Playa Del Carmen was very rough. That same ferry was bombed by a drug cartel a few weeks after our visit. Upon arrival back to the Seaside it was nearing all aboard time. Getting all the passengers back on board was proving difficult and there were probably over a thousand people in the lines. Read Less

This is a great tour, but it is a lot of traveling, not that you can pick up ancient ruins and move them closer, but I do wonder if there is a closer port? I would have also liked to see Cozumel but we didn't have time. The ferry is very turbulent, I kept my mind busy by talking to other people on the boat(Thanks Ally and her brother!) The young people on the boat sang all the way there and back! We did feel it was worth the money and travelling. Make sure you bring tip money for the driver and tour guide. There is some pre-priced item shopping and restaurants here, but not a lot of time to do that and see all the ruins and beautiful beach area. Read Less
