Skagway White Pass Scenic Railway Excursion Reviews

The unforgettable journey on the White Pass Scenic Railway is not just another train ride; built through rugged terrain, the route passes through tunnels and valleys en route to the scenic White Pass Summit.
Our White Pass & Yukon rail tour was very good.

Our White Pass & Yukon rail tour was very good. We started our ride to Canada on a comfortable bus and returned via rail. The scenery was spectacular! Lunch was included as well as a walk on a suspension bridge.

The train ride was interesting, with beautiful views. However, it was much too long. The trip down the mountain was identical (with the same narration). You don't need to see and hear everything twice, most people were sleeping on the second half of this tour. Book the short ride (a friend says that is an option, although I don't know the length.) Skagway is not a very big town. I believe there are less than a thousand residents. Not a lot to do so we did the requisite White Pass train ride in Skagway on a tour with Chilkoot Charters where we had a small tour bus with 26 or so people and traveled to the Canadian Border (Frasier, I think) where we picked up the train back to Skagway. Along the way to Canada, we stopped at numerous sights to take pictures and enjoy the scenery. The wait through "customs" was long and sucked some of the fun out of the day, but we were finally on the train and once we were moving we were able to see the sights from a slightly higher elevation than the road. We were able to take pictures from the outside areas of each car, and the engineer pointed out a black bear as we passed him. It's a historical train with narrow gauge tracks and the history of the area was well told during the tour. We walked through the town to check out the stores and restaurants. A couple of totem poles and the Alaskan Brotherhood building (the front of the building is entirely covered in driftwood, and the huge snow plow car that the train uses to clear snow from the tracks were among the more interesting sights. This is for those people who want/need to take it easy. You sit on the train for the whole trip, no stops. Kids would probably get bored but I liked it. It ascends to more than 2,200 feet and you are treated to areas you can only get to by helicopter. Great scenery and there are many historic markers and landscapes. The narrator is very informative. Sometimes there is wildlife, there was a mama bear and two cubs on the trip back. Most people know to sit on the left side of the train on the way up, it is the most scenic side. The train takes the exact same route going back so those people on the right side get to see the scenery. The narrator repeats the same info, but on our trip I think the ride back was quicker, so try to sit on the left going up. Lots of people had their cameras as you can get some unique shots. Again, the appeal of this is seeing sights most people don't get to see. Read Less

We took the tour where you take the railway to Fraser, BC and then continue to the Yukon Territory to Carcross. It was a beautiful day-long trip. Scenery was outstanding! White Pass Railroad and Skagway Highlights This was booked primarily because my husband and father really like trains. I had no way to know it would be the most beautiful scenery I've seen in a long time. We were really lucky with the weather that day, the temperature was about 70 degrees, sunny without a cloud in the whole sky. We boarded a bus for the ride to Jasper BC where we were to meet the train. All the while the driver gave us the background on the area and some interesting facts along the way. We stopped 3 times for pictures before getting on the train. The train cars were very comfortable with a restroom on each car however there was no drinking available because of the border crossings. You do need your passport you see Canadian and US customs officers on entry to each country. There are platforms on the ends of the trains where you can stand outside and take beautiful pictures. We even saw bears on the side of the railroad. It was a phenomenal trip and I would recommend it to anyone looking to see beautiful history of the area. There was a tour guide narrating at several points but it wasn't too much. On a cloudy day or rainy however it wouldn'tve been the same trip. You rely on seeing into the mountains for most of the view. There were several times where the train would curve around a corner and you could see the engine. It was fantastic Read Less
