Rangiroa Snorkeling Excursion Reviews

Drift snorkeling can be an incredibly liberating experience as you give up control to the natural currents and "drift" along with the sea life. You won't need to swish your fins once. Take an underwater camera because you'll see plenty of brightly colored fish, as well as rays, sharks and dolphins.

It was a drift snorkel through the famous Tiputa Pass. As we rode through 10-foot waves in our little zodiac to the ocean side of the pass, our guide said ok when we see the pod of dolphins we are all going to quickly jump into the ocean and swim with them....WHAT! ....And so, we did......TWICE!......It’s one of the moments when you can’t think too hard as the waves are crashing but there are dolphins next to your little zodiac so we dove in and the first time a whole family swam with us and the next jump was just one dolphin but she came up to me as I squeaked my hello. It was sheer joy! We then drift snorkeled through the pass to see a couple large Spotted Eagle Rays, numerous black tip reef sharks, moray eels and tons of fish. The water clarity again was suburb. We also snorkeled in the area known as the Aquarium. Read Less

Outstanding- both company and where they took us. Extremely concerned with safety and very helpful and friendly. The Aquarium was one of the best places we've ever snorkeled- tons of fish- lots of sharks and morays too as another boat closeby was feeding them. So cool to see! Did the drift snorkel too with them. We saw some dolphins but no hammerheads (not the season.) When we go back we'll go with them. We heard people were very pleased with Six Passengers too. Their websites don't say much about snorkeling- they are mostly dive operations. But email- I booked 9 months out. Needed another couple to get the ball rolling but found that on our roll call. Lagoon Snorkel Excursion. The BEST snorkel I have ever been on – NOT the prettiest, just the best. The coral is nothing to look at but the amount and variety of sealife was fantastic. We saw Trumpet fish, Surgeon fish, Queen Angel, black tip Reef Sharks, Triggerfish, Emperor Angelfish, Parrotfish, Unicornfish and numerousWrasses. Two sharks were swimming RIGHT at me, but then turned away at about 25-30 feet. It seemed much closer! WE probably saw about 10 to 15 sharks, mostly swimming right on top of the reef, in about 10-15 feet of water. My highlight was a 8 to 10 foot Yellow Margin Moray Eel free swimming through the coral heads. I followed it for about 2 minutes until it swam into a cavern in the bottom of the coral. About 12 inches of its tail was still hanging out. After the snorkel we boated out to see the dolphins catching waves and riding them into the pass. A very enjoyable experience. Read Less

The lagoon is so big that it's hard to get the sense you're moored within it! Lots of vendors on the pier, with lots of selection and really good prices. Cute little bar at the end of the pier where you can get a big Hinano for 500 francs and sit on the patio which juts out over the blue water. We were able to find a guy on the pier, and for $30 got a ride to "the aquarium" 5 minutes away where the snorkelling was absolutely amazing; transfer to a stationary boat and stay as long as you want; when you're ready to go, transfer back to the first boat, then go through Tiputa Pass and spend a few minutes looking for dolphins before heading back to the pier. If you walk directly down the road by the pier there's a small store on the right which sells wine. Keep walking a few more minutes and you'll come to a beach which is both the outer edge of the motu, and one side of Tiputa Pass where you can watch the cool currents. Read Less
