The best part of this tour was the drive through the city and along the beach to the lake with the mangroves. The views across the lake are lovely. The canoes themselves are pretty basic so not for the faint-hearted. There were about 10 canoes so impossible en route to get any information from our guide Sergio as we went through the mangroves and in any case there was little to see as we were out in the main heat of the day when most birds and animals are wisely resting. Why the tour wasn't offered early in the day I don't know. Mildly interesting display of net-casting from a fisherman on the lake (tip expected) after a long wait for all of the canoes to gather. Even the fisherman showing us on our tour how he sets his nets. Nice cold coconut water) and coconut - after the mangrove tour. The bus ride back included a good ride through the old city, so we did not need to go back separately, as we had intended. The duty free shopping rea near the cruise ship was outstanding. You could spend all day there with the macaws, dozens of them. Read Less

In Cartegena, Columbia, we took a guided tour in rough native canoes operated by boatmen using poles to push the boats. The bus tour guide had such a heavy accent that he was difficult to understand and it was hard to follow his narration. The boatmen did not speak English, which made it difficult for us to get much out of the mangrove boat tour, except on rare occasions when the tour guide was audible. Read Less

Bus ride through the city. Good tour guide, Adrian. Stopped at the Old Fort to walk around and take pictures. Toured another part of the city, then stopped at some park where we were escorted to dug-out canoes (holding 4-5 people). We didn't paddle.....a driver did (with a pole). We maneuvered through the mangrove jungle and saw birds, fish, and crabs. Watched a local guy casting his net to catch fish. It was so much fun and adventurous on the canoe ride! Back at the bus we each got to sample coconut milk from a coconut with the top chopped off. More tour of the city of Cartagena. Excellent day! Read Less

The canoes were not union made.
Sail Date: January 2017
The canoes were not union made. The poleman didn't speak English. It was in a very poor area. The water is only about 3' deep in the deepest part. It's pretty sad how poor some people are.

A very nice canoe ride through the mangrove swamp and dance exhibit by local young people. This is a very poor area, only accessible by driving the bus along the beach for a ways. Many folks live in half-open structures barely above water level. We were shown how the locals net fish. We really appreciated the dance demonstration, which came out of the African heritage of the people. One thing - this is not a tour to take if it is likely to rain. We fortunately escaped this - it poured buckets just after we left the village. Read Less

This was a combination tour of the canoes with a city walk. We rode a bus out to the "fishing village" which was laughable--it's a bunch of party huts on a city beach near the canoe dock. The canoes were old, leaky, and often got stuck in the mud. We saw no wildlife at all. But the worst part was yet to come. We reloaded the bus and went back to the city center for a walking tour. Our guide had limited English and no basic guiding skills. He literally pointed and said "church door" or "old house" as we ran by, and it was almost impossible to stay together. Several of the group didn't make it by the end. The AC on the bus broke down and we stood for 20 minutes in the sun while they tried to fix it. In all our travels, this was one of the most disappointing excursions ever. Read Less

Excursion began with a bus ride through the old city to the "Las Americas" hotel and resort complex adjacent to the airport. Behind the loading dock for the hotel's convention and banquet facility is a giant mangrove swamp. From here, we left the buses and boarded dugout canoes, each seating four or five passengers. The "boatman" uses a pole to push the canoe through channels between the mangrove trees that are barely wider than the canoe itself. The environment is spectacularly weird and enchanting. At one point, returning canoes encountered our out-bound canoes, and it took a little while to squeeze the boats past each other. Upon returning to the put-in location, we were provided ice cold coconuts where the top had just been cut off, allowing us to drink the slightly sweet water inside. It was at this point that my family asked to use a restroom. One of the tour operators and a Columbian National Police officer escorted us to the conference center's facilities. Upon returning to the parking lot, we discovered our bus had left without us. There were a few anxious minutes while our escorts called the bus to find out where they'd gone. It turns out they'd simply pulled around to the entrance to the conference facility so everyone else could use the restroom, but for five minutes, we were stranded in a foreign country! I'm glad I insisted that we never leave the ship without our passports, as they would have come in handy had we indeed needed to find our own way back to the ship. Read Less
