Patricio our guide and Pepe our driver were awesome! Very educational and the ruins were so cool to see. This was the "smaller" ruins excursion, but I thought it was perfect. The ride around the island was beautiful and the stop at a beachside stand for guacamole and margheritas was fantastic! The shopping wasn't as impressive. The pier shops are fine, but I did not go to Mexico to buy things made in India or China. Took a lot of looking to find authentic Made in Mexico items. Overall...I would definitely go to Cozumel again. Read Less

We went to the Mayan Ruins at Tulum. I couldn't tell you about Cozumel from this cruise because we never got off the pier. We walked off the boat down the pier and onto a ferry which shuttled us about 45mins to Playa Del Carmen. From Playa Del Carmen we took about a 2.5 to 3hr bus ride to Tulum. Tulum was cool for our first ruins but we enjoyed Lamanai in Belize more later. After the ruins we were bused about 45 minutes to a beach resort where a lunch was provided and then bused about 2hrs back to Playa Del Carmen where we were loaded on the ferry and shuttled the 45 minutes back to the Ship which had gotten underway already. This was a loooong excursion which | would not recomend to anyone with the slightest mobility issues. We would not chose such a long excursion again but did enjoy it. Read Less

We had chosen the RC Island Overview and Mayan Ruins tour at 11:30, over the Bar Hop tour, because we wanted to see some ruins and get a handle on the island. Turned out we picked the wrong time (my girlfriend wanted to sleep late), because it didn’t leave us time to get a cab to the town plaza before or after our tour. So about 11:45, driver Morita and tour guide Nico took us out on the road. The roads led us through the city streets and out to the countryside. We stopped at San Gervasio Ruins, and Nico gave a good walk and talk tour of the Mayan’s and the site’s history. We went out on the west side of the island and saw plenty of blue water and white sandy beaches. We also stopped at the Chocolate Factory which had free Wi-Fi. We arrived back at the terminal at 3:45. Again, the van’s AC was not doing much, so always sit up front as we did. Read Less

The long trip to the Mayan Ruins was very educational and informative, but we were truly hoping to be able to relax some on the long bus ride, but the person talked and educated us the entire time. Before we got to the ruins, the bus stopped at a place for us to shop. Because there were several buses full of travelers, and they only allotted 30 minutes for us to shop, we barely had time to purchase our souvenirs before it was time to get back on the bus. Once we got to where we were to offload and get to the ruins, there was a problem with the shuttle/train, and we had to wait in the excruciatingly hot sun for a very long time. Once we finally got our ride to the entrance to the ruins, the rest of the group had been waiting for quite awhile. When we got to the actual "ruins" we had to listen to more history. In the meantime, I almost passed out due to heat exhaustion! Once the history lesson was over, we had less than an hour to see everything, get back to the bus area, find some food & drinks & get back on the bus! Due to the delay caused by extra time required at the shopping area, and the delay in trying to get the "shuttle/train" to the entrance to the ruins, we didn't have much time to see very much and felt very rushed/hurried. We had hoped the bus ride back would be quiet so we could rest, but again, the tour guide talked, pretty much, the entire time. While this excursion was indeed educational and probably a once-in-a-lifetime experience, if we ever came back to see the Mayan Ruins again, we would definitely want to do it privately so we could enjoy it more. We were very surprised that no meal was provided for us since this was an all day excursion, nor very much time allowed for us to obtain food & drink, which was desperately needed due to the length of the excursion and the heat & humidity at this location! I wanted to give this one four stars but didn't because of my overall feeling after reflecting on our trip. Our tour guide was amazing...until the end of the trip when we had to hear about how poor he is and how poor they are in his country and he lives on tips so we needed to pay him and our bus driver. This was after we had already paid a big chunk of change to go on the excursion. The ruins are interesting but it was so hard to find shade and it was hot! Not their fault of course. Just didn't expect it to be that hot. We also visited the Mexican museum and had a lunch there. Again aside from rude guests from our ship it was very interesting. We also visited the chocolate place but could have skipped that one. No running water there so toilets didn't work and you could not wash your hands. We did not care for Cozumel overall and do not plan to return. Read Less

A must see. It's hot and crowded, but the Mayans were so ahead of their times I am still in awe of all that I saw and learned. Super far from Playa del Carmen, but I'd do it again. Ferry ride over from Cozumel was nauseating.

We headed to Tulum to see the Mayan Ruins. This requires taking a boat to the mainland (Cozumel is on an island in case you weren't aware). The boat ride is about 45 minutes and it's moving at a good pace. Once there, we connected with our guide, Beto, who lead us to the bus to take to the ruins. The bus was a very modern air conditioned tour bus like a Greyhound Bus we have in The States. The ride is a total of about 50 minutes along a modern freeway. Half way it stops at a nice gift shop to pick up the typical touristy stuff. I recommend you get your souvenirs there rather than at the ruins because they'll take your US dollars and give you US dollars in change. At the ruins you they'll take your dollars, but you get pesos back. Just something the guide helped us with. We had an excellent tour guide, who was of Mayan descent. He spoke the entire way there giving us the history of the area and other advice. Upon arrival he took us on a 30-45 minute tour. Just incredible to see these large ruins...if it weren't for all the tourists you'd feel like part of an Indiana Jones adventure. You are then free to roam the rest of the time. We had an hour before bus departure, so we walked down the cliff to the ocean, then headed back towards the bus for some lunch. There are tons of shops at the main entrance…they all looked like they were selling the exact same items. We had lunch at a place the guide recommended, fish tacos and quesadillas. Great lunch and they were fast. After that it was back on the bus, back on the ferry and finally back on the Epic. Just a really fascinating tour and Beto made it extra special with his knowledge of the area and the culture. Read Less
