Yangon, in Myanmar (formerly Burma), was a fascinating city. We took a private tour for four through Travel Indochina. Our guide, Zar, was excellent. She spoke very good English and was able to modify the tour to fit our interests. We toured the center of Yangon and the old British colonial buildings. We spent a couple of hours in the Scott market. The highlight was the Shwedagon Padoga, a 330 foot tall gold-plated pagoda. We saw the pagoda in the late afternoon and early evening. On our visits much of the lower pagoda was covered for restoration.Myanmar is a fascinating country. It is undergoing a transformation from a underdeveloped dictatorship to an emerging democracy. It has just opened up to western tourists in the past few years. The ship docked about an hour away from Yangon. The road to Yangon was very crude and subject to traffic jams. Our return from Yangon took about 2 1/2 hours. Read Less

A great port for independant travellers to stay overnight and see the pagodas, market, circle train trip (3 hours) etc. Easy to get a taxi at the port gate, and good hotels available to be booked online.

Definitely worth it, if you still have the time and stamina; Novotel on Inle Lake is gorgeous, with de-luxe houses, not rooms for each couple! a bit touristy, but still with charming cultural sites and fun boat rides !

Again too long a bus journey from the port to anything and the Port itself sadly was basically a concrete slab in front of what appeared to be a Bus Graveyard. The only neat thing was the Navy Frigate moored in front of us - they had what appeared to be a hand over and piping on board and that was really fun to watch. There was also a performance for us when we arrived with the Chinese Dragon and Music, which was lovely. Read Less
