The city is a quick walk from the wharf. Very hot, humid and wet and seemed dirty and a bit seedy!

Beautiful area, we went for a big walk around town, bought some souvenirs, had dinner at the roulettes in the market area 2 minutes from the ship where they set up food vans & you can experience local foods & atmosphere!

The port was right in town, and we were spoilt for choice with many local operators offering tours on Easter Sunday. We paid $50USD each for a 4 hour trip around the island with 6 stops, and in a small air conditioned van with 9 others. We stopped at the Marea, the Botanic Gardens, Waterfall, Venus Beach, and finally a beautiful Lookout. We didn't have time for the 6th stop. It was a good tour so we were satisfied with all we saw. We didn't get to swim though, so this was somewhat disappointing, but we gained a lot of local information on the tour. Read Less

Loved Papeete - wish I had spent another day or two prior to the cruise. We only spent one day and went over to Moorea for a few days, which was lovely!!!

The most populated island by a wide margin, the island appears exceedingly poor, but it is the only true international airport, so it must be visited. We stayed at Sofitel and found it to be excellent for water/beach and lagoon experiences and the Le Carre Restaurant is exceptional at sunset. People are very kind here. We also walked next door to Java Express for a very authentic island meal and we had an extraordinary experience in downtown Papeete at Villa Thai in their upstairs dining room. People in the shops were kind and we stocked up on groceries at the local supermarket. Read Less

Good to see something of the island, because Papeete is essentially a seedy French colonial town
