Wow!! This was one of my favorites spots! The water was absolutely gorgeous! The town was clean and had plenty of shops to see. We did a catamaran excursion that was crazy. The captain warned people that they would not be dry if they sat in the front of the boat, and he wasn't lying! They took us to a small island, where we could snorkel, or just sit in the sun. It was beautiful! The sand was pink! The rum punch on the way back was light on the punch and was mainly rum, and was included in the price. They served sandwiches as well. A great time!! Read Less

Our first port was St. Maarten. We always go off on our own there. We've been there many times and know it well. We take a short ferry ride from the pier to town (Phillipsburg). This is an easy port to traverse on foot especially if shopping is the goal. There are very nice beaches steps from where the ferry docks, and you can rent beach chairs and umbrellas for a nominal charge. There are bars and cafes up and down the beach. We love this port. If you like to shop, its a 5. We went to several dive shops and nothing decent was available unless you were there by 8am. We arrived at 10. Don't trust the words of the information staff that swarms you. They are trying to fill their taxis. We were told we needed to go to Divi Resort for the good diving. Upon arrival they laughed and told us they have never had a dive facility there. We walked to dive shops and shopping from the ship. Read Less

Very nice port with allot of shopping and a very clean boardwalk/beach area. It almost seemed like there was a bar right next to every shop, so while the ladies were spending money, the men of our group could sit and have a cold one in the shade. The beach was very clean, but it was weird having to "rent" two lounge chairs and an umbrella for $10...apparently this is the norm. If you look hard enough, you can find the one guy who will get you the above mentioned with a bucket of 5 beers for the same price. Now thats a deal! Read Less

It was kind of windy when we arrived so our snorkeling trip on the French side of the island was canceled. Luckily we were able to get on a Snuba excursion on the Dutch side which ended up being a lot of fun. If you have never scuba dived before, this is a great introduction to see if you would like to eventually become certified for scuba. Snuba requires no certification or training other than what you get on the boat and there were 2 professional divers with us at all times to make sure everything went OK. While there was not a whole bunch of stuff to see where we went, being able to dive down approximately 20 feet and see the sea floor and a ship wreck up close was a great experience. Read Less

St. Martaan/St. Martin- Rented a car at the pier and drove around the island. This was the one day that the weather wasn't really nice- but it was just a little cloudy. We had lunch in Marigot- and went over to Orient Beach. Parked near "Kon Tiki" and were about to get a chair there, but for a fraction of the price the place next door had chair, umbrella and drink for $8 a person. I must tell you the Pina Colada I got was very good. We left after a little while though, as it was rather cloudy. Went back onboard early, and the weather on that end of the island was better, so we sat out onboard and relaxed. Read Less

This has got to be one of my favourite islands. The water is so blue and the people so nice. The weather was beautiful. Just shopped on the pier. Picked up some pop at the duty free to put in our fridge. REMEMBER... the pop that's in your fridge when you get there is not free. Just ask your cabin boy to remove it. Next time I think I will take the water taxi over to town {$6.00} round trip and you can use it as many times as you want. Things are much cheaper there than on the pier. The last time I was there you could get T shirts for about $3 or $4 each. These ones were about $8 - $10 each. Oh, well, next time. Read Less

We took another low-key, no-real-plans day in St. Maarten. We were feeling a little silly and so we took a cab over to Maho to watch the planes land from the beach. That was actually a lot of fun, but we had no real sense of how -big- St. Maarten is and so we had some worried moments where we wondered how long it was going to take, how bad the traffic could really BE, and would we be able to get back?! Happily we worried for no real reason and it was a lovely day. Read Less

St. Maarten - Orient Beach - Taxied there for $6 pp. Got chairs, umbrella and drinks for $15 at the Pirate Bar, but they are all about the same along the beach. The nude section of beach is only about 100 feet away, so you can see the nude "sentries" near the rock boundary that welcome you into their area (or disuade you from entering, I guess it could go either way). It was enjoyable to people watch here, and a beautiful beach also. The weather did not cooperate though, it started raining and didn't stop for about 45 minutes. This soaked our chairs and was a bit irritating. But we still enjoyed our day here. There were many vendors and lots of food offerings here also. Read Less
