We rented a car with friends, went to Marigot then to Orient Beach. Hit both the clothed and Naturist sides of the beach. the business with all the stalls on the clothed side were fairly annoying trying to get you to pay for their chairs, etc. Offers of "Clean changing rooms" really were not true. Check them out before you pay and sit down. We changed in the naturist part of the beach to avoid the smelly dirty restrooms (without toilet seats). UGH! Still enjoyed the beach and the blue water, though! Read Less

We love this port. Even though we did not do an excursion, I did get off the ship and walked around the port area for awhile taking pictures and buying t-shirts, etc.

But #1 by far (and possibly the best stop of the trip!).... drumroll please... YODA GUY. The museum itself is a 3/5, but the gentleman is almost always there and he's just a gem of a human being. He spent so much time with us (and the kids) answering all kinds of questions and telling stories about the film industry. It was wonderful, we spent over an hour there. Read Less

Our experience occurred during spring break, so we do take that into consideration. That being said, St. Maarten was very congested and all we did was take a cab to Maho Beach to watch the planes land and take off by the beach. The cab ride to and from took us through parts of town that we would not explore on our own - very run down and crowded. There are other beaches that can be explored and other activities available, but we chose to get back to the ship and take advantage of the almost-deserted adult pool. Read Less

Did it ourselves....Taxis are conveniently located right outside the port in the designated area, its in the big building. You could either wait for the taxi to fill up so u pay only 8 bucks per person (more than 4) or just pay $20 bucks per person and not wait. Went to margiot for the french side first and it was a nice place, make sure to visit the fort at the top for magnificent views of Marigot and the bay, then head down to a small french cafe for a drink and a croissant.Headed to Maho beach for the planes and it was an amazing but thoroughly crowded place with different people from the ships all hanging out there. Get a space, get some carib beer from the sunset bar and then relax and wait for the planes to come. Make sure to stay till after 1 pm, where you get to see the KLM 747 arrived...it's the highlight....apparently so because after that, the beach started to emptied and many were heading back to the ship.We arrived back at the port and took a water taxi 7 bucks round trip from downtown phillisburg which was a relaxing ride. It took you to the heart of the town and with the port guide manage to find stuff to do and eat. Remember to get your port shopping map before you leave the ship so you know what to find and do. In St. Maarten we taxied to Orient Beach. $7pp each way. $14 for 2 chairs, an umbrella, and 2 drinks. Lots of naked people, but I expected that. They did not enforce the “no nudity on the left side of the beach.” I probably wouldn’t take my kids there. Everyone was very pushy. It was hard to relax because every 5 minutes someone would try to sell you something or offer you a massage. It got really annoying. We went there in 2007 and remember the water being much calmer. The waves were much higher this time. Read Less

St. Maarten is a great island where one can enjoy a day at the beach without having to spend a lot of money. The water taxi from the pier ($7/person/day) will take you to Great Bay Beach where any number of vendors rent loungers and umbrellas. We opted to pay the $7 flat rate for the water taxi. (Previously my husband and I went to the French side of beaches, but I didn't want to visit there with the kids, if you know what I mean!) Son just wanted to play in the sand. Be prepared to be accosted by "guides" to take you to particular sections of beaches, where you will pay $10-$15 for two loungers and an umbrella. You can get a beer bucket (with ice) for $10-$12 for 5-6 Corona or other beer. This was o.k., however then you continue to meet the locals selling their wares. I don't mind, really. Just smile and say no. However even when we did purchase a (beautiful/reasonably priced) necklace from someone, she kept coming back to ask us to buy more. Food in the beach restaurant was good, however was pretty pricey. You absolutely cannot use a bathroom at a restaurant unless you purchase something. There are public bathrooms near the water taxi stand. I would recommend going father than the first beaches near the taxi stand. Read Less
