Because of 10 hour delay in departing we were only able to spend two hours in port. We did not thank goodness take one of the ships overpriced tours. We were able to get a driver to take us on a whirl wind tour of the island for a fraction of what the cruise liner was charging. What we saw was amazing but would have liked to have had the 10 hours originally scheduled on the island!!!!! Read Less

We had been to Split previously and didn't arise early enough to take any more enterprising excursion, but just walked about and were halfway up the Marjan Hill when it, once again, started raining. This put a bit of a damper on our intent to go to the summit, so we descended and returned to the ship. It was the first time we remember having had several days in a row somewhat marred by precipitation on a summer cruise! Read Less

This was a lovely town with some fun shops to visit. It was nice being able to walk to the heart of the city without having to take a taxi.

A lovely old town within easy walking distance of the port. Narrow little streets and an ancient old palace to explore..... along with plenty of little bars and cafes to stop and rehydrate.

Walked through Diocletian's palace, did not do museum - but would have if our kids weren't with us. Not a whole lot to do here but it is a shorter stay and at the end of the trip so didn't need a full day experience.

We bought an hour city tour by private taxi, who took us around the city of Split. We were picked up at the Promenade (center of town) and he took us around the area. We paid 30 Euros each for it. It was fun. Takes you to a great overlook atop the city, where you get stunning views of Split. There's also an ancient jewish cemetary up there that we walked through. Very cool. Read Less

You can walk off the port again and the main attraction isDiocletian's "palace". Well actually the whole "old city" is inside the walls of the palace. It was built is about the year 300...For a small fee, you get to visit three buildings. An additonal fee will get you into the basement level. Didn't do that, but they say there is nothing in the rooms BUT several Game of Thrones scenes were filmed there. It is a delightful city to walk. At one end of the Promenade sits the Fife Buffet Cafe. It is no longer a "buffet" as we think, but my goodness the amount of food is buffet like.I got beef goulash and fried veggies, both huge amounts. My wife got stuffed peppers and swiss char-again huge amounts, plus a glass of wine and a local beer for-124 kunas or $18.00..and the view came for free. Read Less

You can get off the ship and find a taxi driver to take you wherever you want to go . We went to Trogir, which is a beautiful walled city, to some Roman ruins and then went back to the ship for lunch. After lunch we went to the Diocelin Palace, which is in walking distance ot the ship. We took a walking tour there which we got when we arrived. We found the palace very interesting, with parts from different eras. If you go, take a tour because, if you don't, you won't know what you are seeing. Read Less

SPLIT: Great town, with the Diocletian palace, right on the "Riva"; however, it's a 1/2 mile hike from where the ship docked (OK if the weather's good). The Palace is really something--we had done it the week before on a Gate 1 land tour, so we didn't repeat, but I think a guided tour might be worth it. There's plenty to do in the old town, with a great market area on the right-hand side (which was closed this time, since it was Easter Sunday). Be sure an go to the big statue (looks kinda like Dumbledore, from Harry Potter) and rub his toe for good luck. Right behind the statue is a nice park which is great for a picnic, if you have a "breakfast" sandwich along from the ship. There are a lotta shops, cafes and restaurants in the old town alleyways--good for wandering. We enjoyed sitting along the "Riva" in froni of the British Embassy, just people watching. Read Less

First impressions were not god, mainly because there were four cruise ships in the day we visited so the place was rammed. However we persevered and found Split to be a delightful town. It has a lovely promenade and the old town is serene - just pootle around and get lost in the narrow back street and you will find some real treasures. The main touristy area can be heaving though. Very unwelcoming place. If the vendors there want to make more money from tourists I would suggest it may be in their interest to accept Euros. Hardly anyone on this cruise had their local currency
