One of my favorite ports as the tour took us to Volcano to look into caldera. No magma to see that day but very impressive. We also stopped at an artisan market and had enough time to ship. The colonial town of Granada was next and had interesting walk about to see famous hotel, art museum, traditional dancers. Our tour guide had very interesting stories about the Sandinistas and changes to country. Most informative and great pace with variety of sights! Felt very safe along the way. Read Less

Fascinating! LIke going back in time. We took a way too small bus (apparently our group was left-overs - not enough people for a real bus) and were very, very uncomfortable for the 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive in each direction and I couldn't understand a word the guide said (my hearing issue). BUT. Really interesting things to see: Houses, farmyards, villages, people on pilgrimage with ox-carts, people pulling trailers with bicycles. Grenada is a beautiful town - stunning ironwork and such a palette of housepaint colors! We had a delightful, cool boat ride through Las Isletas on Lake Nicaragua and had an excellent lunch before climbing back into the horrible bus. I would do this trip again, but not in that bus. Long drive to the active volcano & caldera as the port is still being developed and other than local vendors at port, there really isn’t much at the port so a drive is necessary to do/see anything.

-San Juan Del Sur Nicaragua- Captain skipped this port due to high winds.. honestly after speaking with our Costa Rica tour guide and the staff on the cruise ship.. I believe it was mostly due to the political unrest in the country. The week before 3 ships skipped that port as the political protests ended with violence. We knew the night before we were not going to port.. so we just had a very relaxing day on the ship instead.. although it did start early about 6 am, as the captain came over the speakers to inform us of the canceled port. Interesting and informative ride to Granada. The guide was local but spoke excellent English. The cooking class wasn’t really informative but it was fun and the food was good. The walk to the top of the church was beautiful. There were dancers performing at a small square and we had a nice ride through town showing us the sites. We also made a quick stop in the morning at lake Nicaragua to take photos Read Less
