Been here previously. Good to wander, see the cathedral, have coffee and just look around. Had already 'done' all the tours however for anewby the golden circle or blue lagoon would be good.

Docked at Skarfabakki port about 2.5 miles out of town. There is a oceanfront walk from the port to town. Both Enterprise and EuropCar are within walking distance of the dock. If you overnight and have a rental car, there is ample free parking in the dock area. There is a large Icewear souvenir store at the port with prices similar to what you will find in town. We checked prices here first before going downtown, then did some last minute purchases here before leaving port. We never needed Kroner. Credit cards were accepted everywhere, and there was no problem accepting most US credit cards. There was a Port-provided shuttle to/from town for $20 round trip. We opted to rent a car and drove the Golden Circle, plus we also did the town Vik and the black sand beaches there and also made it to the Bridge America-Europe on day one. On day two we drove into downtown Reykjavik for some shopping. There was no problem finding parking downtown. Parking meters took credit cards and were in English, as was the self serve gas stations. The cost of the car, fuel, added insurance (which seems to be a “thing” in Iceland), was about the same as the cost of a private tour plus the town shuttle. The difference was flexibility and the options for additional stops. Driving in Iceland was easy for those who normally drive on the right side of the road. Lots of traffic circles/ roundabouts for those who struggle with such things. Read Less

The port was 5kms from the city centre. A shuttle bus was laid on by the port authorities (2000 kroner for a return ticket). It was incredibly busy in the visitor centre and we missed one bus waiting to buy a ticket. They are very infrequent. The second day we decided to just walk it, that's how poor the shuttle bus service is. However, I'd recommend a taxi! The touristy stuff in Reykjavik can easily be seen in half a day. I'd recommend the city pass as the museums are not free so get whatever discounts you can! I didn't take an excursion but I think to enjoy your stop here you should!! Read Less

We opted for a private bus tour of the Golden Circle with Grayline Bus. It was the most aggravating experience. The tour was delayed by 2 1/2 hours. Communication was abysmal and almost non-existent. Nerves were frayed so it was a very bad start to the tour. I had done this tour back in 2000. I felt bad for anyone who was in Reykjavik for the first time. It was a good thing we were overnight in port. Otherwise, I fear we would have missed the ship if it were a regular departure time. Read Less

Had a rental car again, and work an overnight stay we were able to cover a lot of ground. Hraunfosser was spectacular - we covered a northerly route the first day, hitting the Golden Circle highlights. We got up at 4 AM the next day to make sure we had ample time for a drive to Fjadrargljufur Canyon, which is well worth the lost sleep. It has just opened for the season the day before, and words can't do it justice. Read Less

Eight of us in our group set up and hired a private guide for 2 days. Wonderfull experience. We found the guide through this site. Much cheaper than anything offered by NCL.

OK to walk around. Would have preferred the tour to the Blue Lagoon, Viking museum and Geothermal fields, but NCL screwed us out of that.

Have visited Reykjavik before and done the normal excursions so this time we walked from the ship (berth about an hour's pleasant walk along coast or £18 return on shuttle bus provided by port) to the harbour area. Harpa cultural centre is a good stop for film on Iceland, shopping, free wi-fi and free toilets (not always the case in Iceland!). Harbour area is interesting with several museums/galleries and interesting eating places (including my favourite Valdis ice cream opposite maritime museum!) Read Less
