The ship docked at the industrial port. Within walking distance at the port was a marketplace with lots of vendors selling various items. If you wanted to see more of Costa Rica, an excursion was the way to go. We did a ship excursion which took us on a boat ride on the Tortuguero Canal, visited a rainforest preservation, and visited a banana plantation, including the packing operation, which enabled us to see much more of the countryside. While we were waiting to board the tour bus, we had the opportunity to take a small shuttle bus for this tour, which we opted for at no extra cost. This was a good decision as the group was smaller and allowed for a more personal tour. Most vendors will accept USD. Be sure to bring water with you as it was very hot and humid. Read Less

Took boat tour of a local canal. Saw lots of birds, sloths, monkeys. Very relaxing and weather was great. Great tour guide enhanced the experience. On return to docks they provided free refreshments including free beer!

In costa rico we took the bus / boat / train tour and  enjoyed the tour greatly. The bus took us first to a banana plantation and we got to see how bananas are grown and harested and shipped. Bus then took us to the river boat that took us a few miles down the river where we saw 2 and 3 toed sloth , monkeys ,Iguanas and some native lizards ( can't remember the name). The bus then took us to the train and we rode old time steam train thru the rain forrest . Bus back to dock where we picked out a couple of tee shirts. back onboard. We are now in contact w/ a real estate agent in Costa Rico about buying a few acres outside of town for retirement property. This is a dirty third world city. Tours to the rain forest are all there is, really, and if you've done it once, you've done it. A nice straw market on the pier, though. Probably the best bet.

Again dock in unsafe area. High police presence around dock area. People were warned that it wasn't safe to go beyond the crowded flea market type shopping area.

Not a good place to walk around. In most of the ports they warn you to take off all your jewelry and be extremely careful when walking around.

WE were scheduled to go to a hacienda and see some plantations I believe but this port had to be cancelled. It was understandable but it was someplace I have never been. Disappointing.

We had been here so many times we decided not to take a tour. Walked around but there was nothing to see. The last time we did a bus, train and boat tour which went to a banana plantation. That was interesting.

Very poor area. Took a taxi for our tour. We toured a banana plantation and saw the process after the bananas are picked. Took a boat ride down a river looking for wildlife. The boat reminded me of the African Queen.

It rained cats & dogs that day so we did not leave the Ship. I had been there before so did not care. However, there are some very nice little shops right at the port which is very picturesque

This port is purely for the distribution of fruit from the area and I would not recommend walking around the town as the area is of little beauty or interest. We caught a taxi to a local beach which was OK but nothing special.
