I didn'nt like the Penang port at all, they don't even try to make it look appealing for visitors, and had i only seen Georgetown i could of understood why, however on our way back to the ship we were taken through the more modern side of the city, there is no reason why they couldn't slap a bit of paint around if nothing else. As for the tour...we were very late getting off the ship, i don't know whether that was the ships fault ( partly i think) or the chaos outside with the tour guides etc, but we didn't enjoy it, arrived late to the temple of a thousand Budhas, it was closed, not really set up. To take international visitors just looked like a building site really, the view was to die for the toilets were'nt. We then went on to the furnicular train to the top of Penang Hill, we had to wait around for the next run, half an hour, you would think that having hundreds of people coming to view the hill from the ship that they might of put on extra runs. They expected us to spend spend spend, but most of us didn't have the currency, which was my main concern i was hoping to get some when i got off the ship, but that was'nt possible even if we did have time, as a new cruiser i was'nt aware that i could of got it on the ship prior to arriving ( big lesson learnt there) when the guide found out that we didn't have money she was very put out about and verbal about it all. It was dark and pouring with rain ( not that that could be helped) by the time we got to the top of Penang Hill, i thought we were supposed to go to a Historic Hotel and to see the old village , but none of that happened. Basically apart from the Penang Hill view, we just spent most of our time waiting, and couldn't wait to get back to the ship. Driving through Georgetown wasn't a highlight despite the guide being so proud of it, it was dingy and needed to be cleaned up a bit no pride at keeping its history alive at all, they took us through the modern side of the city on the way back to the ship, they obviously have SOME wealth, as we saw many oppulant buildings and hotels etc, would i visit Penang again, unfortunately NO, before heading there i would of said yes i would love to visit Penang, but for what I saw I wouldn't waste my money. We took a hop on/off bus here. It was very slow because of the traffic and, because we couldn't fit upstairs, we spent half of the trip facing backwards. When we finally got upstairs the view was better, but they don't have a running commentary, so we didn't get a lot out of it. Penang has some interesting architecture, but it's not a place I'd rush back to. Read Less

My least favourite port but it could be because it was extremely hot and humid. We visited the Peranakan Mansion on our own. The city comes alive after dark.. had some amazing hawker food here.

So. Much. Hassling when you leave the port area. Kinda ruined it for us. Also their “hop on hop off” bus is nonexistent.

Cleaner and nicer than KL...grabbed a taxi at the cruise terminal and he drove me to the Hard Rock at the north end of the island. Driver did his best to have me stop at some shops (felt like he received a commission or something) but I stayed firm and just did the HRC run. Back in town, very colonial looking, terrific food, priced right...can definitely go back to Penang. Read Less

Here we just walked around the old fort and the market place but there were too many indians hassling us to take their taxi so we just went back on board for a swim.
