In Penang we just walked off the ship, dodged past the hundreds of taxi drivers clamoring to take us for "Island tour" " Taxi tour" and used downloaded google maps to walk down Beach St (or Lebuh Pantai) to Little India ( about 15 minute walk). Fascinating place to stroll around , then we made our way to Armenian St where a lot of the street art is located - very interesting. We walked along Armenian st towards the water to the Clan Jetties and explored Chew Jetty at the end of Armenian St. The Clan jetties are floating villages where Chinese immigrants lived so they would not have to pay land tax, and continue to live. Then it was getting dark as we docked at 5 pm so we walked back up Pengkalan Weld to the ship. We were able to see the ship lit up as we were walking so it was quite easy to find our way. We got back on board around 8 pm. We felt like we got a good taste of Georgetown, and it cost us nothing , and best thing was we were free to do as we wished. There are a couple of currency exchanges in the port as you exit the ship. Read Less

Got on a hop on hop off bus we were going to get off a couple of stops before the port and see some more on the way back but unfortunately the heavens opened so we went back to the ship.

Our least favorite port. Walked to the Chinese jetties which were OK. Took free city bus around city as a/c was most welcome at it was very hot and humid. Locals were very friendly.

Covered what we wanted to see. Unfortunately the visibility from Penang Hill was disappointing because of the haze. Hot Hot Hot Georgtown but an enjoyable day

We didn't sign up the land excursion package, indeed we moved around by ourselves to the nearby by walking, to The Esplanade Food Center for Mee Goreng Sotong (fried noodle with octopus) + coconut shaved ice. After that we just cross the street and proceed to the nearby 3D Art Museum for fun photo shooting, Armenian Street for afternoon tea and street painting photo shooting, before we returned to the ship. Lots of stuff to do around. They had a local market which was selling local specialties. Tourist Information center was well equipped and spoke English with good clear directions.

Easy walk to the UNESCO world heritage area and you can explore at your own leisure. However, a map/GPS will come in handy. The weather was very hot and humid so I only walked around 2 hours before going back to the ship. The town was very much like a poorer country town of China (not surprising given the heritage at George Town). It was still a great walk around to see how the locals live their lives and the heritage of the area. Read Less

I've been to Penang before, so we spent the day in Georgetown. If you have never been, take a shore excursion to the main sights. Georgetown has a selection of temples, mosques and historic sights. The best include a beautiful mansion tour and the wall murals scattered around old town. A G&T at the E&O hotel and trying the amazing street food in Little India and Chinatown are a must. The best beach area is a 30 minute drive from Penang. Read Less
