In Halifax and Saint John we arranged our own rental cars, which worked out perfectly. In Portland we did a Cycling tour with Summer Feet, also excellent.

Mansions and money. All are common to Newport. The HOHO bus is a good way to see the mansions from the outside. A harbor tour would be a better way as the great mansions all face the sea. Friendly people in a walkable city.

We did the Red Trolley tour of the palatial homes, booked at the information centre - had a good guide, interesting information. Did a short walk around the tender docking area, very touristy, and not many bargains.

WOW - take the public transportation - the trolley was $2 for a 45 minute ride! We got off at 49 (?) steps so we could do the Cliff Walk. It was a brilliantly sunny and warm day. Even saw some seals sunning themselves. Walked to the Breakers. Took a tour there. Then took a public bus, another $2, back to the port where we waited in line for the tender back to the ship. Our favourite place to visit, tender, which I got in line for to make sure on 1st tender as we had booked a tour of Rough point mansion at 9.30. We arrived at Newport and walked the 1.5 miles to the mansion, which was amazing and the only mission with a personal tour also cost us $27 each rather than the ship cost £75, ok we walked but we had 3 people on our tour and not 20 plus which there was in the following tour group, so we felt it was worth booking directly by email. Then did cliff walk to the Breakers mansion totally opposite end of the spectrum of houses, recommended both to compare. Then got local bus back to town and a little shopping is some lovely shops, and nice clothes which we did end up spending here. A really lovely place to visit, and would go back again Read Less

Rented a car and drove to lighthouses. Then did a quick Cliff Walk - took the bus ($2, pay on board) from around the Breakers to the end and then back on the bus to Perrotti Park. A huge Princess ship had a huge line for its tenders - if you're on Princess, plan for a long wait! Cliff Walk was fun, but pay attention when you get to the "rough walk ahead" part - it truly is rough, walking over large boulders. Not for the faint of heart. It was a little hard to see those mansions, from the street or from the walk - keep that in mind if your heart is set on that. We didn't do any inside tours - not interested. Read Less
