We travelled independently from the port of Kobe to Kyoto, which is inland about an hour by train. You need some nerve and experience to do this on your own as the train stations can be intimidating. The machines to buy the tickets do have an English option, however. Kyoto is many, many temples being the original capital of Japan and our best stop of the cruise. It was exceedingly hot and humid (in August) and I almost got heat stroke so be forewarned. Read Less

It was very difficult to tell with Kobe as the 1st day we had planned to travel to Kyoto but immigration took so long that we never got the chance and the queue for the shuttle bus and portliner metro was so long that I had to return to the ship as I can't stand for an decent amount of time. The 2nd day in Kobe it poured with rain so again our plans were totally ruined. I'm sure it's a great place to visit but I remember it most clearly as the port where I nipped off the ship late at night and did my washing at one of the local laundrettes. Read Less

There is not so much to ein Kobe itself, you can easily walk through the city and you should for sure have some Kobe Beef. From Kobe you can do excursions by train to Osaka or to Kyoto. Train System is very efficient in Japan, and it is pretty easy to find your way and to buy tickets at the ticket machine. There is always somewhere a plan in English, look for the station number where you want to go to, enter the number in the machine (after selecting English as language) pay by cash and get your ticket. You have to enter the ticket to get to the platform (signs are in English as well and Japanese people are very friendly and helpful) and you have to enter the ticket again to leave the platform at your destination. If you made a mistake and got a wrong ticket, the gate will ask you to pay additional money, there are machines where you can pay the difference. Sound much more complicated as it is. Just remember which station you started, so you’ll find your way back. Read Less

Took the debark tour. Found it very good, visiting the castle and shrine, but left the ship ridiculously early for the very late flight. An hour later wouldn't have made that much difference to them.

I think we expected more from this famous site -several fairly plain temples (or shrines, which are not fancy left us disappointed).. Immigration in Kobe was a nightmare as it took 3 hours to get off the ship (due tour missing the Port of Nagasaki where they had been expecting us, and had many Immigration officials on duty)...in Kobe they had only a couple of Immigration officers trying to handle most of the ship's passenger.
