Rented a car. Small Alaskan town. Went to the Bald Eagle Foundation. Highly recommend this; only a short walk from the ship.

A bit of a boring small town - just walked around the town ourselves - and took the opportunity to get on cell service and get emails. Spent the rest of the afternoon relaxing on the ship.

We took the free shuttle and roamed around town. We found talking to the local people was the best excursion possible.

Holland America visits Haines in lieu of Skagway every other week. There are numerous museums, shops, and places of interest. You will be told that the bus pickups are every 15 minutes. Don't depend on it as the drivers don't seem to care for schedules as they chat with riders at the expense of those waiting along the route. This is a laid back town so don't be in a hurry. We waited for 45 minutes and gave up, walking back to the ship. It was a rare hot day so we didn't venture back into town after lunch. Did have a sample at the local craft brewery, but the imperial stout surprisingly had no "nose" and the taste was unusually understated. It was probably the last of their supply as this type of craft beer is usually a winter offering. That said, they did themselves and their guests a disservice by pouring it. Next time, we'll take a shuttle to Skagway if Haines is on the docket. Read Less

A very small, but cute, town. In fact, they informed us that there were more people on the ship than in the town! This led to some poor ship-city communication; the ferry took off at 10:45 with four passengers and we de-boarded at 10:50. It's too bad they didn't want to wait as we would have given them so much business! We chose to rent bikes and that was the way to go; it allowed us to see all that Haines has to offer in an efficient way. We bought the 3 museum pass, enjoyed some lunch, and biked to a stunning hiking trail that led down to the water. Read Less

Haines is a lovely little town. And the only one the Captain spoke highly of. We disembarked to walk about and pick up a few munchies.
