We got on the tram and took it to the 4th stop (downtown). On the way you stop 3 times and get a commercial from each place you stop. On the second stop we were introduced to Raul at Koox hotels. He gave a strong sales pitch to get off the tram early however we did not. He told us as we pulled away that we would be back as we walked by and we were free to come by. He included and additional 5 dollar per person discount if we stopped on the way back. We should have gotten off the tram there. We took it all the way to downtown and wound up walking back to Koox and spending the day there doing the all you can drink package with lunch for $20.00 per person. They also offer massages for $20.00 per hour and have free beach chairs. It was a great time! Read Less

Without a doubt, the best day of our trip! Maya Chan only takes the number of people that they can handle with a personal touch. The Costa Maya port is a giant tourist trap. If you want to get to know the area, take a short cab ride to MaThis was our favorite excursion of the cruise. You get picked up by an open air bus brightly painted orange and black. Your guide will share his knowledge of the surrounding area during the trip to a private ranch. You get to ride tandem mountain bikes for about a half mile to a Mayan cenote, which is basically an underwater cave. Those who choose to enter get to experience what Mayan's considered a therapeutic treatment. Then it's back on the bikes and to the bus for a short trip to a private, secluded beach where you can relax, swim, lounge in a hammock while the guides prepare a simple lunch of chicken fajitas with tortillas. The beach is gorgeous and worth the price of the excursion alone. Read Less

Could not understand the tour guide. Accent was so heavy and he spoke too fast (Ruy). He was obviously knowledgeable and proud of his heritage but we couldn't understand 90% of what he said. The food was deplorable. An older Mexican woman using her hands to grab tortillas was off putting. The beef, pork and sauces were disgusting. The prices at this Pride of Costa Maya place were ridiculous. The museum tour was okay. The tour of the miniature mayan ruins and history of the area was agonizing. Read Less

Maya Cahn is a wonderful experience. We have done a number of excursions in a number of ports. We always manage to have a good time and leave enriched but Maya Chan will stand out as one of the best excursions and favorite destinations ever. We were met outside the cruise port where a taxi was arranged to transport us to Maya Chan. The ride was a little long and arduous but once we arrived it was well worth the wait and ride. Maya Chan is a slice of paradise and the owners Mark and Jane worked to make sure that every guest felt special and pampered We were greeted with a rum punch and a basket of chips with pico de gallo and guacamole (both freshly made). My wife is allergic to raw onion and they made her a bowl of guacamole with no onions without batting an eye. We snorkeled, lounged in our private palapa, enjoyed a massage on the beach, feasted on a wonderful lunch, had great drinks including the aged tequila and were transported back to the ship. Mark and Jane took excellent care of us and we would consider another Western Caribbean cruise just so that we could visit Maya Chan again. One of the best excursions ever and recommend this highly. The shops were full of items unique to the territory & the tourist stuff. The best one was a Tequila shop - bought some really good Tequila! They let us sample whatever we wanted and worked with our taste & price range.

I only saw the "touristy" part of this port because I took my mom out to eat before her excursion left for the ruins so we were at the area right at the end of the pier. There is a Senor Frogs which is pretty rowdy everyone was drinking and dancing and seemed to be having a good time just a little loud for my 71 y/o mother. There is a huge pool with swim up bar and a beach that was pretty unattractive and rocky in my opinion. This area is pretty rowdy but I believe a great time if you just want to party at the pool and be off the ship. On the other side of the pool is Carlos and Charlies which was a bit quieter and the food was OK. I had heard that you can take a taxi to Malahual which is very nice - I didn't do this because I had booked an excursion and it was kind of late when the ship cancelled it. Wish I could have seen more here in Costa Maya and done my snorkel...maybe next time. Read Less

Armpit of the trip - tired of the pushy "macho" men outside every store, calling to you to come in. If we didn't or said no, I heard many snarky remarks in Spanish about us. The only reason I'm not rotting an a Mexican jail for assaulting one or several of these morons is that my wife dragged me away. Costa Maya was alleged compensation for missing Belize and Grand Cayman. Not, not, NOT happy with the change or port. I would NOT have chosen this cruise, even with Belize and/or Roatan, if I had know Costa Maya was going to be part of the package. Read Less

Just took a taxi van to the beach called Yaya beach for like 5 dollars p.p. round trip with my group of 10. What a sad 10 minute drive there isnt anything there. Once we got to the walkway tried finding an internet cafe or phone center. No luck, all being remodeled. So sat at a restaurant on the beach, hired a singer and he played for us for 90 minutes and had some drinks.. It was so hot there. The shops at the port were good, reasonable prices for souvenirs. Price for soda was nuts at 5 dollars a can, and coconuts at 6 dollars. Beer was cheapest at about 4 dollars a bottle. Read Less
