I love haggling with local merchants and finding cool items that you can't just find anywhere. Be warned that the merchants here like to start extremely high with their pricing. I will give an example. I like those knit backpacks and try to get one with the name of the place embroidered on it. In Cozumel they usually price them at $15/ea or two for $20. They started out wanting $58 for the same thing in Costa Maya, assuming people cut that number in half and play the meet-you-in-the-middle thereafter. I was having none of that. I paid $17. IF you know the value of something and know a bit about haggling you should be fine. The aviary ($12/pp) was excellent. They were all elevated enclosures that you access from a series of rope bridges. You not only got to be in the enclosures with them but you got to feed them and handle them if the bird was willing. The lorikeets were the most hand trained of the group. The ring-neck and regular parakeets took some coaxing to trust enough to sit on your hand. The Macaw were beutiful and friendly, but did not want to leave their perches and were not keep on being petted. They, however, were still very gentle about taking the single sunflower seed from your hand, despite having a beak that can crush walnuts. Read Less

Most of the stones are fake and some of the so called silver is really stainless steel. Stick to t-shirts. They have a great variety. Read Less

I didn't really care for this port. Very commercial and there were 2 other huge ships in port the day we were there so tons of people! It was packed - wall-to-wall people.Tons of junk shops though if that's your thing.

First time in Costa Maya. I was pleasantly surprised. Very nice port. We went fishing and was great, then finished the day at the beach. Wish we would have gotten to Costa Maya later and stayed in Roatan longer.

The shopping at the market was great. I had been to Costa Maya in April of last year where we went to one of the Mayan Ruins. It is defiantly a great experience especially if you are a History Buff.

We booked 2 loungers at the Tropicante. As soon as we got off the ship we made our way through a very elaborate cruise port. It was very nice and plenty to see and do in there, but it was so big that it felt like it took forever to exit. We passed all of the shuttles and found the taxis parked outside the gate. We told them where we needed to go and they got us there promptly and safely. Once we got out of the cab we were greeted by Rafael who works for the Tropicante and he escorted us to the beachfront and straight to our reserved loungers which we requested under the shade and it was the perfect spot. They knew that we were celebrating our honeymoon and were sure to set us up with some tequila shots when we were ready. We had a great lunch and the overall price of our food and drinks was very affordable. We shopped on the Malecon and found some great gifts to bring home. I wish we had more time that day in Costa Maya, but it was a short day. Read Less
