Busy, dirty, funny, crazy. Take a Tuk Tuk from the port and you effectively get a driver and tour guide in one for buttons. Typical tour for 4 hours plus is circa 1000 - 1500 rupees (£11 - £16). We had a driver called Sidyad (I think ... Read More

We had a driver called Sidyad (I think that’s how you spell it) and he was brilliant. Wished I had tipped him more as he was a genuine and lovely guy. Read Less

We loved this area. The sights were fabulous, especially the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. Our tour guide (booked through Viator on Trip Advisor) even went the extra mile as there was a Hindu festival taking place in one of the villages we passed, and so he took us to see the elephants that were waiting to be dressed for the evening celebrations. Huge but seemed quite content as they were being fed when we saw them. Lovely area around the beaches. We saw the chinese fishing nets and were given the chance to pull in the nets on the pulleys. It was international Aids Awareness day and there were large numbers of people on a march through the streets, all dressed in various colourful costumes. Brilliant. We went on an old converted rice boat on the back waters and saw hundreds of kingfishers; amazing as they are so rare in England. We were fed some local food which was delicious and then relaxed while we sailed around the lakes, watched people going about their daily business and saw the rice being transported following the harvest. On the way back we saw lots of the highly decorated lorries parked along the sides of the road as a sort of art exhibition. Most are no longer able to be driven but it was great to see. Passed a picket line of women protesting their wages - give them a rise! Would definitely return to this area. In the main town there seemed to be lots of new hotels and restaurants but we had no time to try any of them out. Read Less

Kerala was very interesting. Went on a private tour with Muzahrin tours. Went on a boat trip, walked through markets selling just about everything, saw Basilicas and Synagogues. A fascinating day.

We walked the few minutes to the port gate and hired a tuk tuk and found it a wonderful experience. The drivers were polite and friendly, they all have a list of places of interest to visit so we left it up the driver and were not disappointed. Always haggle about the price of the trip - I think its expected. The only thing wrong with Cochin was we were not there long enough! Read Less

Easy to arrange own travel if you are just visiting Port Kochi. For a better look at the area you will need to travel further afield. Remember local currency needs to be changed at outlet just after immigration but this can get very busy. You can pay for tuk-tuk or taxi on return if you want to change money in town to avoid the queue. Colorful place but many people surprised by the background rubbish - but no different than other places in India Read Less
