GET OUT OF ATHENS if you've been to the Acropolis. We used Georges Taxi twice now and they do a great job. We went to Corinth, Mycenae and other sites outside the city and fully enjoyed. You will see amazing ruins without the crowds.

We are lucky to have friends who are taxi-driver in Athens. So at the day of debarkation we spent the morning in Corinth to see the Canal. On the way back to the airport we had coffee in the beach district and traditional lamb roast.

Our guide was useless - she talked incessantly and would not have allowed enough time to see it all if we hadn't left her and explored the site on our own. I organised a tour with Private Greece Tours for 12 people on a cruise, Nikos the owner was helpful ahead of time with queries and calmed fears of mine as we were in Athens on OCHI day, a day of national celebration with military parades etc.. Frank our driver was waiting for us at the port and gave us a whistle stop tour of Athens, changing itinerary according to the challenge of the days events... absolutely excellent as we saw a lot more than we would normally have done as the city was closed in a lot of places to traffic because of the celebrations. The price was very cost effective for a party of 12. I would recommend this company in a heartbeat and they are worthy of their top ranking on tripadvisor. Read Less

Athens is dirtier than I ever thought it would be. before we went, I always dreamed of going to Athens, seeing the parthenon, and admiring the structures. I suppose for such an old city, it stands to reason that it would be dirty. we took the metro up to the acropolis. the metro is a 20 min walk from the port -- keep the water on your left, and when the docks end (after walking around 20 mins), cross the street and go up the overpass. when you come down, it will be in a while building on your left. it's 1.40 euro for a 1 way trip, 4 euros for all day pass (though you're only going there and back). we got off at the acropolis stop (had to change lines once). It was an easy hike up from there through dionysus' theatere. The acropolis is BUSY, jammed pack full of people! But the view from up there is awesome, and you can see the ancient agora below you. the Parthenon was undergoing some restoration work when we went, but still, the massive structures were incredible. coming down, we passed the agora and ended up in the Plaka. we walked around the plaka, ended up passing hadrian's gate on our way to the Parliament. then we walked around and ended up going back via metro -- just watch out -- the metro ticket selling guy tried to rip us off by not giving us our full change -- left a bad taste in my mouth. Athens via Pyraeus proved a bit tricky for us as we got a bit lost finding a bus to Athens's city centre. But we were saved by a friendly old Greek who helped us get the right bus and also he made sure we knew where to go to see all the lovely and popular sights. There were plenty of people in Athens as expected and we regret not actually climbing up the Acropolis but we found a huge stone made of marble where we had sweeping views of the city of Athens so we didn't miss out on the sights! It was still a steep climb just to be at the foot of the Acropolis so on the way, we passed by the Plaka square and bought Greek breads and sweets. We also got a few more souvenirs like colourful tops and pashmina/scarves for me, shoes and sandals for the boys and even several pairs of sunglasses and bum bags all at reasonable prices. The boys had a fun time oggling at the huge selection of knives, even guns, etc. at the market we passed through on the way to the Acropolis! We almost got late going back to the ship- we got disoriented due to the heat and the distance we had to walk to get back there. It was a bit tricky but thankfully we got there on time! Read Less
