Freezing, wet and miserable and I'd been there before. P and O got an excellent downtown berth.

We took the HOHO bus and had a great experience. The Sunnomore Museum is wonderful and we had lunch at the top of the viewpoint. This is a beautiful small town with great experiences.

We walked to town it was quiet. If you are going to buy souvenirs this town has the better prices over all but Norway is pretty expensive

Pretty old town that burned down 100 years ago and was subsequently rebuilt. Climbed up to viewpoint (450 odd steps) for cracking views of Alesund.

Very interesting buildings, easy to walk around. Didn't walk up Mount Aksla, although it looked ok if you are reasonably fit.

Alesund was fully rebuilt in 1904 after a fire, our visit being the 17th May which was also a National Holiday in Norway as they celebrate their independence from Sweden. We were docked within easy walking distance of the town. We were able to watch a parade by the Norwegians of all ages with the majority wearing their national costume, the students passing out wear red dungarees. All shops were of course closed, barring a few convenience stores. We walked up the 418 steps beyond the national park for spectacular views of the surrounding area. Coffee and cake at the top as a reward. The weather was perfect. Read Less

A beautiful port where you can take the bus to the top of the mountain and around town. There is wifi available in the visitors office. It is also small enough to walk around on your own.

Before Alesund we called in at Honnigsvaag where we took a fantastic excursion to North Cape. We also called in at Alta for another great excursion in search of the Northern Lights. In Alesund we had another gentle stroll round.

Small, very quiet but quaint port. There was a viewing point which involved climbing around 400 steps which we didn't do...but should have.

* Alesund, Norway - This time with a Tour! Fortunately meeting at the dock. The one we took was named Spectacular outer islands (Giske & Godoy) that lasted 3 hours with an excellent Guide. Really was an eye opener because of the unbelievable amount of tunnels (and length!) connecting all the islands. One of them constructed before the UK-France Chunnel, in fact the technology developed for the Norway tunnels was used by the Anglo/French consortium that built the Chunnel a few years later. The visit to the oldest Lighthouse on the island was fantastic, with great views of the nearby islands and fjords plus the coffee and 3 tier Vanilla cake w/whipped cream was….mouth-watering!! But the best was still to come! Because we were taken to the top of Fjellstua mount that has even more spectacular panoramic views than from Bergen’s hill top. Not to be missed! One of the best tours on this cruise. Weather still good!! Read Less

There wasn't much to choose from for excursions. The ship offered 3.5 & 8 hr ones and they were quite expensive. Actually none of the tours are cheap but you don't want to take the chance of missing the ship. They have an observatory at the top of a hill that has stairs all the way or you can take a bus or a tour to go up. We didn't realize at the time but just took pictures of it. We only walked around the town which was quiet since it was a Saturday morning. There were a lot of the shops not open so found a restaurant for coffee and to do emails. They have their own currency - NOK so had to charge them. Read Less

Spent quite a bit of time at a Viking ship museum and old village community. The highlight was the summit of Aksla. Not too high but very scenic vistas of the city.
