We chose this cruise because my friends got a special deal with their travel agent. We have been on many cruises with Norwegian and Carnival. This is Norwegians "bad" experience for us. This ship was extremely overcrowded. There was no way to get near the pool or hot tubs. People crowded the pool and the edges of the pool so it was impossible to get near it. There wasn't an "adults Only" pool, We didn't get to see any of the free shows because they had to be booked in advance of the cruise. All entertainment areas were packed at all times and it was very, very difficult to get a seat anywhere. The cabin attendants must have been overworked because one night our cabin wasn't straightened nor clean towels provided. We had specialty dining as part of our package but we didn't know you had to make reservations to dine there before you ever got on the ship. The excursions were great but that was away from the ship. I do not ever want to book on this ship again. Read Less

The dining room was our issue. Our wait staff on our first night needed some training again. All of our foos was not correct and he seemed not to care. The food also did not taste good either. I did not expect a lot because it was a 3 day cruise but it should have been better.
Our room was always clean and neet.
When we got off the ship at the end we did a facial recognition system for immigration and it was a lot faster and easier. We carried our bags off and was off the ship by 8am.
Over all we had fun. We do not drink much so the drink package for us was water and coffee This shop is really not for kids. Read Less

I was looking for a quick cruise that my wife and I could book. This one was perfect. We flew into Miami from Philadelphia and stayed overnight in South Beach. The next day we were on the first boarding group to board the ship. Embarkation was very easy and we were eating lunch onboard by Noon.
The ship is an older one, but it just went through a renovation so a lot of the stuff was new. We were upgraded into a Family Picture Window Suite the day before sailing.
The pools and bars were great. It was a short cruise so there were to a lot of kids running around. I also enjoyed the Main Dining halls. I did not go to any Specialty Restaurants. The buffet was like others buffets.
The service was very good and everyone working on the ship was friendly. It was rare to pass a member of the crew without getting a "Hello" or "Good Morning", etc.
Great Stirrup Cay was great. We missed this on our last cruise because the seas were too rough for the tenders. There were plenty of beach chairs available and a bar was never a far walk. It got a little rowdy on the tender back to the ship once the drunks were leaving the island, but it wasn't out of hand.
My favorite room was the Spinnaker Lounge. It is in the very front of the ship and has great views.
All in all this was a great cruise and I'd recommend it for somebody looking to get away for three days. Read Less

I was looking for a quick last-minute mini-break, so this 4 day cruise was ideal and priced right for me, a single traveler from the New York area. One day at sea - one day in Bermuda - one day at sea. There was some confusion about boarding times by those who booked early, but that didn't affect me, since I booked a few days prior to sailing. I walked onto the ship with no wait. However, this was likely due to the fact that the ship had no passengers to disembark upon arrival.
Norwegian sells hard from the moment you get on board. Nearly everything is at an upgrade and added fee. If that makes you feel ill-at-ease, this is not the line for you. The staff is courteous and efficient, but due to the large numbers, there's always one or two still training and inexperienced.
The Getaway is a very large ship and when fully booked (4,000 passengers) it can be chaotic - especially during the 'muster' / boat drill. The ship also attracts many non-English speaking people which can sometimes cause confusion and conflict due to the lack of communication possible. This is a fact, not a problem. Patience is needed at all times on a big ship like this.
For first timers to Bermuda, I highly recommend the bus tour of the full island. It takes five hours and visits St. George and Hamilton and everything in between. Guides / drivers are knowledgeable, friendly, and funny. I wish it were not raining nearly the whole time, but this is in mother nature's hands, so we made the best of it.
My only complaint is that since it was an atypical trip length, there were all sorts of omissions and errors, especially in the Freestyle Daily newsletter. A happy mistake was that they charged us too much for port taxes and refunded them in onboard credit. The ship docked in Bermuda and it was 45 minutes before the first announcement about the arrival - and that was to inform us that the ship was not yet cleared. When a ship arrives - an announcement of status should be made immediately to avoid confusion. Read Less

This was our 25th cruise and 4th with NCL. It was a last minute cruise booked directly through NCL. At no time in the booking process were we informed that the tips per day were increasing from $14.50 pp to $20.00 pp. Upon receiving bill under door on day of departure, was the first I would see this change. I immediately called the cruise line on the car ride home and was put on hold for one hour. Getting no satisfaction from the agent I called back again and was put on hold for another hour. Finally, I was told that we could have prepaid the $14.50 before April 1. This we were never told upon booking directly with NCL. The agent gave us a $50. Credit towards another cruise if we book within 2 years. I doubt we will be on NCL again any time soon.
My assessment of this cruise is the following:
Ship: Nice renovation and very clean. Small public rooms which made for congestion.
Food: C- The buffets were less than average with few bake goods. No cookies, croissant, danish, etc. the entire 4 days until the very last morning. Baker must have been sick. Crossing dining room was good with excellent wait staff. Food was average.
Entertainment: Fabulous shows!
Cabin: Porthole, small but functional. Very pleasant & efficient Cabin person.
Destination:Cuba is very interesting and will return for another visit. Private island was nice.
Passengers: Too many drunken passengers taking advantage of their bar packages. I doubt many of them will even remember they were on a cruise. Read Less

A friend and I decided on a last-minute cruise, as we both were looking for a week's vacation that required little planning. We booked about three weeks in advance and we were able to get an ocean view room. We were nervous because the room was on the 5th floor, same as the two main dining rooms, and near the elevators, but it ended up being a great location. Quick and easy to get everywhere, and we didn't hear any noise from the elevators. The ship was refurbished this year and it was done very nicely. Just the rooms can use an update!!
Havana was a fun experience. I recommend the 'Best of Havana' six hour tour. We wouldn't have known where to go without doing a lot of research (and since we didn't have cell service for directions). The tour was half bus ride/half walking. We ended up being on the bus a little more due to the rain, but our tour guide was great. We also got to do rum and coffee tastings, and time to purchase cigars as well, if you wanted. After the tour we wandered to the hotel where Hemingway spent his time and sat in the lobby bar drinking mojitos and listening to a wonderful piano player for an hour or two. It was fantastic. The indoor market isn't worth going to. It's about 100 booths with tourist tchotchkes.
The next day was a ship/cruise day. Unfortunately it rained a bit and was cloudy, but we still enjoyed some sun on the deck. Not too much great entertainment on the ship, but that was expected since it's a smaller ship. We spent most evenings at the mojito bar or the local or at the karaoke bar.
Great Stirrup Cay was wonderful. If you plan to lay by the beach all day, I recommend trying to get out on one of the first tenders so you can get chairs by the water. Floats are only $16 to have all day, and we had a $50 credit that we used towards them.
Getting on the ship and disembarking (in Havana as well), was run very smoothly. We never waited in a line at any point. Even exchanging currency in Havana. I've been on cruises we're you're in line for a long time. I recommended keeping your suitcase and walking off with it on the last day. Again, there was no line, so we walked right off! Read Less

I was a bit taken back after booking this cruise to have the Norwegian agent say you may be disappointed after being in the Bliss...a true statement. From embarkation, seemed like one ball drop after another. Met some truly wonderful people and staff- and as well some people I wish stayed home. Cabin older (10058-balcony) but clean, smaller. Toilet was small and on five occasions I had to call guest service- wouldn’t flush... someone a few cabins away kept blocking it. Met people who had no a/c in an interior, sewage smell , in their cabins.... one night on my deck an electrical fire broke out causing many to be evacuated to deck 13... we didn’t hear the commotion but heard thru passengers horrible stuff and handling. The smoking section at top of ship was flat out horrible traversing twenty plus steps. Food was good, specialty restaurants good, entertainment and music was so so.... same people same songs...all in all I will sail on Norwegian again but not on the Dawn. Also, I think Norwegian needs to deal with some of the surly staff and the way they handle problems or complaints. You have a wonderful product but Passengers who pay have rights too—help those or reimburse those with uncorrectable problems..instead of babysitting people who are in a large suite who act inappropriately, worry about the folks who work hard and want a wonderful experience Read Less

The ship has a small pool area for the amount of people that it takes, on land days that’s not a big problem but on sea days there’s definitely no room to enjoy that area unless you go save a spot early in the morning, the biggest problem we had was with the onboard entertainment, it was 5 days of the same over and over, the one day we had a night of somewhat good music I requested from vip band to play something for everyone and was told yes no problem but they played through their 50 minute session non stop and didn’t please the crowd, once they finished and the DJ Dylan came to his booth I again went to him and requested some Latin music and was told that I should have asked the band that was doing the Latin party and when I told him I did but didn’t get the request fulfilled he simply brushed me and stated playing something else completely different, take in account that there were only about 20 of us there at that time and we all wanted what I was requesting, the hallway on the 9th floor where my stateroom was located was always smelling like weed and the room itself was a 3.5 at best. Most likely I will not be vacationing with Norwegian again. The one girl from Morocco that was on the entertainment was the nicest person ever on that whole ship. Read Less

We had a great time. The crew was nice, always friendly and always greeted us with smile and warm hello. Our room steward, Sandip, was very attentive and our ice bucket was always full and cabin always neat and fresh. He left us such a nice note on the last day and we told him a little about NYC, where the Dawn is headed next.
The food was fantastic! We ate at either Aqua, the Venetian or O’Sheehans and hit the buffet for random snacks. The buffet was fine - it’s a buffet - our expectations were not high, but we didn’t eat there for major meals. We preferred the sit down and be served restaurants and were not disappointed.
Prime Rib, NY strip, baked fish, homemade chicken cordon bleu, risotto, and mozzarella ravioli. Delicious desserts. The brownie cheesecake at O’sheehans was yummy. Service was great as well. The 2 main dining rooms had great choices every night. And served nice lunches, too. I read the reviews about the food being just ok or horrible. Not sure what these people ate or what they are used to, but I strongly disagree! Perhaps they were eating hot dogs from the Pool grill? At any rate, we ate complimentary dining every meal and came home satisfied.
The shows were awesome. Loved Soul Rockin Nights and Elements and Po, the magician was fun. Didn’t see the comedian because we were pooped from the day on shore. But we played Deal or No Deal, enjoyed time in the sun on 12 and naps in the shade on 7 with gorgeous views. The weather was fantastic.
Minor complaint - I forgot how SMALL the pool was. Holy crowdedness! Wall to wall bodies. But that wasn’t of major concern, But might be for some.
The pool music was fine. Looked like everyone was enjoying it. Wasn’t of huge interest to us - we preferred the tranquil waves on deck 7. But all of n all, the Dawn is a nice small ship for a fun getaway. 5582
Costa Maya - we did a Mayan Ruin excursion. The ruins were interesting and excursion overall was good, however the trip there gave us an up close view of the poverty and horrible living conditions in the surrounding area. The roads were littered with trash, waste and general dirtiness. The cruise line, excursion company or someone needs to reinvest in the community and assist with cleanup and establishing a better sewer system. Read Less

My husband and our two kids decided to take our family vacation on a cruise this year... after much research and obviously not enough reading of reviews, we chose to sail on the Norwegian Breakaway. We prepaid all the service fees and pre booked all our excursions so that we could relax and not have to worry.... wrong! We booked with several promotions included in our trip...or do we thought. Our $50 onboard credit was nowhere to be found on our bill so after several trips to the customer service desk, sand two other people beside us having the same issue, we left disappointed!! $50 is not the end of the world but we expected the cruise line to honor their promotions..beware of these promotions. We all had the drink packages....my husband and I the liquor package and the kids had the soda package... what a joke. We could have at least saved the $70 we spent on the kids because they couldn’t get a drink from the bar without us... and well let’s face it... this ship is nothing but bars. Speaking of bars, I hope you like standing in line... the service is atrocious! These employees avoid eye contact at all cost. And you pay a heavy service fee for no service. Even the sit down restaurants leave everything to be desired... cafeteria food at its best and again atrocious service! The excursions were amazing... after we waited in line for 30 minutes at guest services to get our passes that were supposed to be left on the room since we prebooked. The service of our room was touch and go... out room was always cleaned but we had to search the hall for someone to get us toilet paper... there is never anyone available at the housekeeping number and it will tell you to call back.... very frustrating! We preordered water bottles... yes you should do this since only a couple of the bars actually have water bottles... but they are warm... and no need to have them empty the mini bar to store your water like we did because the refrigerator was room temperature. All in all this was the most disappointing family vacation I’ve ever taken... thank the lord the islands and people there were amazing! Read Less
