Norwegian Getaway Cruise Review by winepainter
- Sail Date: July 2019
- Destination: Baltic Sea
- Cabin Type: Balcony Stateroom
The only entertainment we attended were Syd Norman's Pour House and Howl at the Moon. We enjoyed the entertainers that were there a great deal, but it should be noted that they were disembarking the same day we did.
We liked our cabin, especially the bathroom. There was a lot of storage, but we did notice that it was all low and I wondered if it would be difficult for someone who has trouble bending. The balcony is small but adequate. The bathroom and shower was the best we've experienced on any cruise.
The Getaway is not one of our favorite ships overall. The main atrium has too much going on and is crowded most of the time. The casino is open to the one atrium, so the cigarette smoke wafts not only through the casino, but the floor above.
Ports- We stayed in Copenhagen for one night before and one night after the cruise. Tivoli was wonderful, especially at night. Taxis are readily available to take you to the port and after the cruise. NCL repeatedly states that taxis are in short supply which is absolutely untrue.
We took the train into Berlin. It is a minimum of 3 hours into Berlin because of a stop, but a little shorter on the way home. They did provide water, coffee or tea and a cookie on the way there and a beer and wine cart with inexpensive choices on the way back. We agreed that we wouldn't do the train ride again, but did want to experience Berlin.
Helsinki was nice. We booked the Hoho through NCL for the convenience and were able to walk off of the ship, board a bus and leave quickly.
We also booked the Hoho for Stockholm. I was concerned about this because of previous reviews, but the buses left quickly. It might have been different for people who lingered getting off the ship. They told us we could catch the 3:30 or 4:30 shuttle back. They had buses there before 3:00 and each left as soon as it was filled.
We loved Tallinn. I got off the ship at 8AM and walked into the city. Many things didn't open until 10, but for me, it was very enjoyable to walk around the city before the crowds arrived. The drawback for us was that we were there on a Sunday and several things were closed.
St Petersburg is really pushed as the jewel of the cruise.NCL still tries to make you think you need to book an excursion through them or obtain a Visa independently. We booked a two day excursion through TJ Travel and recommend it highly. It was the same itinerary as the NCL excursion, but about $100 less. I booked it through email, did not have to pay until the end of the first day and the tickets sent to us acted as our Visas. There was absolutely no problem getting through immigration either day. Our van had only 14 people, while it appeared the NCL excursions were full sized buses. The only drawback to the TJ Travel was they advertise time for shopping, but it is simply in their gift shop, so I felt that was a bit deceptive, although common for excursions.
Do note that the 2 day excursions, whether through TJ, Allah, or NCL or very intense. Our group agreed that we were glad to see such a variety, but might have preferred a little less intensity and more time in some of the places.
Overall, we would definitely recommend this cruise.
