Celebrity Edge Cruise Review by JoMalcolm
- Sail Date: July 2019
- Destination: Western Mediterranean
- Cabin Type: Sky Suite
We had well reserched the ports and had some great excusrsions planned (our own not Celebrity) and were really excited. Coming from New Zealand and having cruised before in Europe (on Reflection and on Holland Amrica) we knew what to expect from a busy European trip.
Arrival and departure on the ship was best I have ever experienced. It was made easier by the Celebrity App and we have done all the photos and checked in weeks prior. We literally walked on board and went straight to our suite. Our ship passes were waiting and the room was almost ready so after being greeted by our butler and dropping off our carry on bags we were off to explore the ship.
The Edge is beautiful. It is classic and on trend. It is not flashy and bright. I think of it as a Four Seasons Hotel at Sea. Definately stay suite class if you can. The resort deck, Lumine the suite lounge, the pool and the retreat is perfect. Even when the boat is full (it was on both our cruises) it didn't feel crowded.
The magic carpet is stunning. Best to go around 8.30pm when hardly one is there and you can watch the sunset. It is fun and not to be missed.
Eden is also a great space that is quiet and under utilised. They have amazing cocktails but also you can order any drink there. The bar guys are really good and its quiet. We found ourselves there a lot when wanted something different. Don't be put off by all the reviews saying its weird. It is actually quite neat. It's just different.
Our Cabin (Sky Suite 11201) was beautiful. The bed was perfect and faced the sea. Lots of storage - more than we needed (2 adults and a teen) and our daughter loved her pull out bed. The retreat lounge acted as a second living space and we spent a lot of time there.
All of the waiters were kind, professional and went out of their way to accomodate food preferences. The Chef made a special meal for my husband after a casual conversation about Indian food. Everything was perfect. The food at Lumine was so good, we didn't really want to eat else where although we did Le Petite Chef, which was fun (but the food average)
We enjoyed the shows and the enetrtainment in general but we were not really on board for that sort of thing. After days ashore we were early to bed!
Our daughter loved it. She chose to hang with the parents but there were lots of kids on board and if she had wanted interaction - she could have easily got it.
We would do it again and really recommend seeing Europe with kids that way. You unpack once - arrive in the port while you sleep, the resort comes with you. Honestly it is perfect.
We did two amazing excursions that I highly recommend. One was Blue Boat Cinque Terre. A private tour company run by a guy called Simone. He met us by the port and off we went on our own private tour of the Cinque Terre, stopping at varios towns, swiming in the Med, having a wonderful lunch prepared by his wife. Literally the best possible day. If you only have a day to see that part of the world - emil Simone and get out there.
The other tour was with Rome Stefano Tours. We have used them 5 times now and every time it is perfect. This time in Livorno our driver Tony collected us and we explored wonderful small Tuscan towns, and had a fantastic lunch Villa Vignamaggio before returning to teh ship. It was a dream day. Honestly it felt like a movie. Obviously if you have seen Florence and Pisa and Lucca then this is the excursion for you!
Back to Back cruises was so smooth. We had the same cabin so on change over day we had complete freedom to do what we wanted. It was really just like a normal day on the boat.
We wrote a blog on the trip ( I am a travel writer) so for more information you can go to small travels.blog and read the reviews especially view of my daughter. She writes in a very honest way from her perspective.
If you are thinking about upgrading to a suite - do it. You won't regret it.

The butlers are great - lots of little treats and surprises, like a beach bag in Ibiza, Champange and strawberries on my birthday. Nice touches and the balcony is good. Don't get room service in the room though. The table is not great - get it sent to the Retreat Lounge where are table and chairs and it is better set up for it.
Port & Shore Excursion Reviews
La Spezia (Cinque Terre)Blue Boat Cinque Terre and Captain Simone put on the very best day out. He'll collect you from the port and whisk you off on a fabulous day of food, music, wine, Lemoncello and the sights. It is the very best way to see the Cinque Terre and swim in the Med. If you have older children - do this - they will be talking about if for weeks as mine has.View All 284 La Spezia (Cinque Terre) Cruise Port Reviews
