  3. Norwegian Breakaway
My husband and I sailed on the Breakaway April 21-28th from Miami. We chose this particular cruise for the dates and the itinerary (Roatan, Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel). This was my 3rd cruise (Celebrity Solstice and Royal Caribbean Majesty of the Seas). After booking I began researching about the ship and reading the reviews daily. I was getting a little nervous because it seemed that the reviews were getting worst the closer we were to our sail date. I guess the reviews helped me set my expectations so that I would not be disappointed. I was bracing for the worst, but everything turned out perfectly! Embarkation - We took a Uber from Miami Airport to the Terminal and arrived there around noon. Everything went really smoothly. There was a bit if a line up but I think we were onboard the ship within about 20 minutes of arriving at the port. FYI - Even with a drink package you will be charged taxes on every drink you order until you reach international waters. We had about 4 drinks each and were only charged taxes on 2 of them though. Probably an oversight on their part as they were writing everything by hand. Ship - Extremely clean and well maintained. The crew is always touching up pain, polishing banisters, cleaning, etc. The casino does smell like stale cigarette smoke though, but we were not inconvenienced by this. Cabin - We originally booked a 5th floor Oceanview but we bid for the Upgrade Advantage and ended winning our bid of $175pp for a Spa Balcony Room. We were thrilled about this as it meant that we had unlimited access to the spa facilities all week. We made excellent use of this. We were assigned cabin #14106. It was clean and had plenty of space for both of us. The storage was more than adequate. The bathroom was surprisingly large, as was the glass shower. It was perfect for us. Dining - The buffet was always excellent, there is plenty of choice and there is a theme almost every night (Asian, Latino, Seafood, Mexican, Italian). We had dinner at the buffet twice during the week. We had breakfast at the buffet a couple times as well. There were always free tables and the crew was always quick to clean tables for the next guests. No issues or complaints there. We had 3 Specialty Dining options that we used: Cucina, Le Bistro, and Teppanyaki. One night we went to Wasabi (Sushi à la carte) for appetizers and ordered 2 rolls to share. These we delicious, I wish we had eaten a full meal there! I would have liked to taste every item on the sushi menu! Our 2 rolls + service charge came to $18. Well worth the treat. Cucina: I had the Caprese salad which is served with a nice ball of Burrata on the plate, it was delicious! I also had a steak which was cooked to perfection and was so tender. Le Bistro was also very nice, but I think I preferred the main course at Cucina. Teppanyaki was was so much fun, it was very entertaining and the food was very good. O'Sheehans had a fun atmosphere. The food was ok, nothing special. If you are looking for a nice quiet breakfast, head over the Margaritaville on deck 16. They set up a small breakfast buffet there and there are plenty of tables, away from the crowds. Entertainment - Howl at the Moon (dueling pianos) was awesome, we went 3 times. We also went to the early comedy show (PG) and really enjoyed it. Burn the floor was insane, the dancers are so talented! Rock of Ages was good as well, probably our least favorite. We did not feel is was as distasteful or raunchy as some have said in their reviews. Definitely not kid friendly though! It was alright. We went to see the band at Syd Norman's one night, it was pretty bad. Not sure what the name of the band was, I think they were playing 80s cover songs. Service - This is what sparked all of the bad reviews I read before going and had me worried. The service was not horrible, and we never waited more than 5 minutes for a drink. I will however say that the many of the bartenders we encountered were not outgoing talkative people. They were kind of like robots going through the motions, if that makes any sense. They took your order asked for your card and delivered your drink. On to the next customers. The guys at Syd Norman's Outdoor on the Waterfront were very friendly though, we loved going there. Each bar has its own drink menu but they will make anything you order. I always ordered a Perfect Margarita. I usually hate Tequila, but this was my favorite drink and I ordered it every day. Spa - we went to the Thermal Suite almost daily. It was a nice spot to relax and read. I wish they would monitor the noise level as some people talk very loud. Otherwise it was great. Pool - Very small and extremely crowded. People were getting up super early to reserve chairs around the pool even though there are signs saying that it is prohibited. We did not go to the pool and spent time in the spa instead. We were ok not using the pool. On the last sea day we went to Spice H20 for sunbathing and used the cold waterfall to cool off. It was nice but a little crowded. Excursions: Roatan: went with a private company Bodden Tours Fun and Sun - It was awesome. I got to hug a sloth and then went to a beautiful beach for snorkeling. Harvest Caye, Belize - This is NCL's private island but nothing is included. We had to pay for drinks and food. The beach was very nice, plenty of loungers and shade. Costa Maya - Private Excursion at Maya Chan Beach, perfect relaxing day with VIP service, a nice massage, an amazing taco lunch, I highly recommend it! Cozumel - booked a paddleboard and snorkling tour with NCL. It was not what we expected. We were very disappointed and went to the Shore Excursions desk to complain. They refunded us our money. Overall we had an awesome cruise and we enjoyed NCL so much that we just booked another one on the Bliss for March 2020!

Excellent experience on the Breakaway!
