Explorer of the Seas Cruise Review by aussiecruzer
- Sail Date: February 2018
- Destination: Australia & New Zealand
- Cabin Type: Grand Suite - 1 Bedroom
We took aboard 2 bottles of wine as allowed by Royal Caribbean in our carry on luggage which was no problem and handy to enjoy a drink on the balcony of our suite. We enjoyed the night life a lot on board. Great party vibe, with everyone having fun. The Karaoke bar was fun, with everyone joining in songs. The piano bar player in the Schooner bar was absolutely outstanding and this became our favorite place to sit after the show. Shows were quite entertaining, but the karaoke bar and piano bar were better.
Pool deck would be very busy, difficult to find an empty chair if you wanted to sit where you could hear the live music , but pool chairs were available on other decks. Gym is fantastic , great ocean views, and hot tub in the gym is hardly used compared to the hot tubs on pool deck. Loved the perpetual motion golf ball model outside the teenagers club!
Meals in the main dining room were great, and we ate most lunches in the main dining room with the amazing salad bar which I love, and a la carte menu, but I did notice there was also a limited buffet there too . Off the Windjammer a small area at the back of the Italian restaurant is set aside for suite guests, this was useful for lunch on boarding, and for breakfast on the last morning when the Windjammer was totally full. I think there must have been lots of passengers with drinks packages because there was always a line of people waiting at the bars. Lots of people celebrating birthdays, hens nights etc on this short cruise. Dining room staff sang happy birthday to our daughter and brought her a cake after dinner on her birthday.
There was no formal night on this sailing , which I think quite suited the relaxed party atmosphere. If I had to make 1 complaint , it would be that when I received an email from our Concierge Jorge a couple of weeks prior to the cruise, I asked him by email if there was going to be a formal night, and he replied yes, it would be on the Saturday night. So I packed formal clothes, only to find out on board that there would be no formal night. Correct information ahead of time would have saved me from packing formal wear unnecessarily.
The ice show is fabulous and not to be missed. On disembarkation at the overseas passenger terminal I noted a large table full of items which had been confiscated pre cruise laid out for people to pick up. There were so many power boards on that table so dont pack a power board!
Overall a wonderful cruise, and I would certainly do this again as a short break cruise without having to fly. We were lucky with sunny weather, calm seas and sailing into and out of Sydney Harbour is just magnificent!.
